graphing paper

I am looking for graphing paper in large sheets and/or in medium large-ish quantities. I am looking for the paper weight to be a little bit heavier than the pads of graph paper that you buy at office supplies stores. Sort of like the graphing paper in the Moleskins notebooks (that are graphing paper.) I will be using the paper to make my own notebooks...

Do you know where the best place is to find this and to get a good deal on it? I'm going to be checking out Omer de Serres but it's a big art store and most of the time their prices are expensive. I am also looking for other places that I may not have thought of... or even other art stores.. suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

Caricatures in Old Port

Hi! My friend and I were thinking of getting a caricature done of a band we like in old port to give it to them (since they'll have their concert there) and we were wondering if anyone knows if

1) it's possible to give the person a picture to work from
2) the cost for a letter paper-sized caricature
3) the cost if the band has 6 members

thank you!

Where in downtown core I can have the best selection of posters and get them laminated? I know L'Affiche on St Denis, but I didn't find anything that I'd like this time. I am specifically looking for some Warhol prints.

Just a quick question about drawing at old port restaurants

I'm having a sketch done of my boyfriend and I by a friend, and I was wondering - is she allowed to draw us if the three of us are inside the restaurant? We scheduled it for tomorrow but it looks like tomorrow is supposed to rain, now. =\ I guess the better question is, would the restaurant allow such a thing to be done?

Thanks,

Jennifer

Old alcohol posters/prints

Hey all,

do any of you have an idea about where I might be able to find old alcohol posters or prints in the key of something like this (http://www.allposters.com/-st/Food-Beverages-Vintage-Art-Posters_c19285_.htm) in montreal?  I'd appreciate any ideas or suggestions any of you have.  Ideally they would be in large sizes.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Embroidery floss for needlepoint?

Hey everyone!

I'm looking for places in and around Montreal where I can find embroidery floss. Preferably DMC brand. I've found one place in Laval (in Centre Laval) where it is sold for $0.95 +tx each, and I find that a bit too expensive.

I'm crossing my fingers. I hope there's someone else in here that likes embroidery, needlepoint, and that sort of thing. Maybe there's a yarn shop out there that also sells embroidery floss by number?

Thanks!

P.S. I checked the tags and memories, and I didn't find what I was looking for. / I've been to WalMart and Zellers, but they sell them in bulk. I need specific colours and a good amount of them. That's why I'd prefer going somewhere specialized in this. / Omer DeSerres does not sell yarn and floss and that kind of supplies.

Savez-vous où je pourrais trouver des fils pour la broderie? Merci!

Art Tec Closing?!

Does anyone know why Art Tec at the corner of Sherbrooke & Bleury/Parc is closing? I used to work there and I'm wondering why the boss would give up on the business. My curiosity lead me to here, maybe some of you might have heard something.

Thanks for any info I can get! =)

Hello! How are you all on this fine, but chilly evening?

Does anyone know where I can get peacock feathers that I can use for arts and crafts? I'm not 100% sure if Omer DeSerres has them; I checked but no luck.

If I can find them downtown or in Westmount, that would be awesome!

I was wondering if anyone could recommend classes for either relaxation techniques or meditation, preferably downtown? I'd like something not too intensive, maybe once a week?

Also, does anyone know of any life drawing classes? I'd like to brush up on my skills...

Art Exchange!

Hello everyone! I am looking to do an art exchange of sorts. I have this photograph (It's huge -- 18 by 20, I'd say, if not bigger) and really great but I've had it for a few years and am looking for a change. So here's the call-out. Does anyone have anything that they love but have had for ages and are also looking for a change of environment?! Let's trade art! No cost, just art for art.
I tried to post the image but cannot figure it out. Here's the link, anyways: http://i43.tinypic.com/118ep8k.jpg

Soap making in Mtl?

Hi Mtl,

I've recently developed an interest in soap making. Anyone out there know of any places where I could learn how to make soap? Anywhere that teaches how to make body butter and lip balm a plus!
I know Savon Populaire has workshops, but I was wondering if there are any other places hiding somewhere that I don't know about.

Thanks a bunch!

Art classes

I'm interested in taking an art class this winter, preferably drawing. A search on Google eventually led me to 2 art centres: Centre d'art la Salamandre (http://centredartlasalamandre.com/default.php) in Outremont, and the Visual Arts Centre (http://www.centredesartsvisuels.ca) in Westmount.

If you know anything about the classes offered in either centre, please let me know! I'm looking for any reviews. I'm leaning towards the one in Westmount just because it would be easier for me to get there (I don't have a car).

Also, if anyone has a third (or fourth or fifth) alternative, do let me know. I am looking for a class in downtown or nearby.

Thanks!

and another note, on a long shot...

Hi friendly folks of Montreal lj community.
As mentioned above, this is a bit of a long shot, but I'm hoping that maybe someone out there can help me out. Here's the deal, I'm working on an essay (due Tuesday) on popular media culture for my art & technology class, and I have been searching desperately trying to find something that "clicks" and appeals to me (which has been surprisingly difficult.) Finally, I found it! The display art in Urban Outfitters (on St. Catherine street in Montreal.) The thing is, I need to have a few pictures to work from, and the teacher also required that we include image within the essay. I asked one of their staff earlier in the day if I could take some photos (and I explained), he said yes! I asked if he was sure, as I knew sometimes stores had policies regarding that. He said they didn't, and it was fine... so I told him I'd be back later with my camera. When I went back, and went to take a picture, another staff ran to me and told me that I was not allowed to do so, and she insisted on this, saying that it's the corporate policy. (Corporate policy shmorporate policy, let me write my essay! I know, you don't have to say it - wicked comeback!) She was kind and apologetic and suggested that I see if there are any pictures online posted by UrbanOutfitters of "ideal" stores, or said I could go through the process of contacting the head blahblah blah people to get permission, but that would likely take awhile... or, see if any pics are floating around the internet

Alright so...
Does anyone have any pictures of Urban Outfitters, particularly their large displays or general store layout? I have to write on one I've seen (the essay in my head is based on the one on St. Catherine street), and the main display with a homage to silk screen printing is the one I'm most interested in.

(Also, if you know of anyone who may be involved in the creation of this piece, or works there or other who might be willing to chat or e-correspond with me a bit for some background info, that would be cool. The woman told me that the staff there design and arrange most of the stuff - which is a quite unique corporate approach!)

Thank you for trying. Thank you for reading my rant, you wonderful people. (<- at least I imagine so, and a little flattery never hurts)

Ciao! Happy Sunday

in search of public art/metro/stm/busses info

Hi again everyone;
First off, thank you all for so kindly answering other previous posts. Your help was much appreciated.

And now for the new question of the week!
I'm starting an art project which would involve installing panels in those advertising spaces along the top of busses. Does anyone know the policy of the STM on art or on advertising? (This is for an art project, but just in case I would have to "rent" a space. Might anyone know who I can contact to find out more?
If you have any other thoughts or advice, I would be grateful to hear from you. :)

Thank you very much!

I took the metro today from lionel groulx to bonnaventure and the metro car I got in made me really nervous. It was dark blue inside and the windows had pictures of a city on them and there were voices coming from the speakers. It was really creepy, to be honest, because over the metro rumble these talking voices were practically inaudible.

What's going on here [info]montreal? Am I going crazy or is there some kind of reading going on in the metro?

Did anyone else walk into an art exhibition on the orange line today? Information would be greatly appreciated.

    Hello~! :)

I recently graduated from university and I'm looking for a job, but since classes ended I haven't seen my friends around as much. Does anyone know of any fun, low-key social clubs that meet maybe once a week (preferably weekdays) and wouldn't mind a newbie? I'd be interested in a book club or something to do with art or even music. As you can probably tell from the username/icon, I'm very interested in Japanese language, anime and video games, so anything related to those would also be good, but I'd like to expand my horizons a little, too.

The Scrabble group sounds fun, but I just missed the latest meeting, I think. XD Maybe next time?

I've never taken steady lessons before and I haven't gone riding in years, but I've done like the guided circuits a few times; I'm just out of practice. I've been aching to get back into riding and I figure there's no harm in asking!

    02. Does anyone around here play ukulele, have a ukulele or chord book that they want to get rid of, or know where I could get a ukulele?

    Dear Montreal,

please please please help meeeeeeee! My last post was kinda ignored, so I'm hoping this time someone out there has some information.

I am looking for a life drawing session, I am not necessarily thinking about a private art school, for example like www.alternance-art.com, more of a life drawing session organized by a group/co-op of artists who pool their resources and money together to organize weekly sessions in a private art studio. During the school year, I usually go to the open studio offered at Concordia or at Uquam. I need something for the summer! My budget is $15.00 or less per session.

I'm guessing they're art. So, two questions:

    1. Who's work are they? Is there an explanation somewhere?
    2. Is it normal for six manholes to be so close together, or did the artist install a few for good measure?

I just stumbled upon this group about 2 weeks ago and I absolutely love it.

This is a long shot but here goes nothing...

I'm looking to break into makeup artistry, its been my dream since well, forever.Schooling isn't really an option for me because there aren't many places that offer such courses and the ones that do are too expensive. So my question is, does anyone know or can anyone refer me to any makeup artists in the city that I could maybe take private lessons from?Ideally i'd love to find someone who I could maybe apprentice for.

Lastly, I was wondering if anyone knows of any places that offer seminars in the city?

    Hey there,

I'm looking into Montreal as to where I might go to live if Adolf really screws up this country, or he starts WWIII or something. I love NYC so passionately, but we're not the US, really.

So when I visit this summer, I'd like to check out the serious Industrial, Powernoise, Breakcore clubs, but at the same time gay-friendly places would be real sweet. I can speak a little broken French from high school, if that matters.

I don't want to go to some lame-ass touristy crap, I'd rather get attitude for being a tourist and see some Real Montreal.

And the Art shit, too, like if anybody visited here into that, I'd totally send them out to P.S. 1 in Queens, where no tourist would EVER go, but they have the most amazing venue for Contemporary Art in NYC at this point. So where are those places?

    (no subject)

Anyone know anything about the public art installations on Parc Lafontaine and also on Roy? On the Parc Lafontaine, there are sculpted steel chairs of various varieties set in a semi-circle and then there's a map of the park. On Roy, similar chairs are scattered around a square somewhere around Saint Hubert.

I can't find a thing on Google, not even a picture.

EDIT, SOLVED: The two are part of a set by Michel Goulet called "Les leçons singulières." (1990-1)

    Election Pinwheels

Along Queen Mary in between Decarie and Victoria, the old corregated plastic federal election posters have been turned into pinwheels. Does anyone know who's responsible for this? I think it's great!

Todd Goldman is a hack, throw rocks at him

I posted this in my personal LJ this morning, but I feel this strongly deserves to have the word spread to as many people as possible, especially my fellow Montrealers artists / cartoonists.

    http://taxidermied.livejournal.com/42521.html

You know it is annoying when some 16 year old traces over your art and calls it his own? Annoying but ultimately innocent.

Now imagine that, but apply to a guy who gets the art DISPLAYED.

And people pay from 3000-10,000$ US for one of his "artworks."

Which has earned him a total of 2.5 million copying and plagerising the last 2 years, so far. While some really good artists barely get enough money, some guy is just reaping what should be their profits.

Spread the word, especially to your fellow artists. Don't buy his David and Goliath shirts, tell your friends, tell your mom, or dog, just let this get as big as possible.

    Thanks guys!
