Newcomer

Hello Montrealers,

I'm going to be moving to your fair city next week, as an opportunity has popped up. Aside from Craigslist and Kijiji, where should I be looking for apartment listings for Montreal? I won't have time to walk around, it needs to be online or available in Toronto.

Secondly, is there anything I should keep in mind when searching for apartments? I know that there is no last months' rent to be paid up front...is there anything else?

Thanks so much, I'm looking forward to moving!

Edit: I'll be making appointments and then going to see the apartments next weekend.

Appartment Hunting

Hello Montreal!

While I am scouting Craigslist, Kijiji and all the semi-legit appartment hunting websites out there, being so short notice I am asking for all the help I can get.

I am looking to move anytime between this very day and Oct 1st. As I am mostly working from home, a small 4 and a half would be ideal, but due to the time restriction, I would settle for a big 3 and a half. My budget is 500$ and lower.

My requirements are as follow:

Full Bath.
At least one closed bedroom.
Washer and dryer hook ups OR washer and dryer available in building.

If you are leaving such an appartment yourself, or if you know of one, I would be very happy to hear about it.

As for me, I am a professionnal woman in her late 20s. Non smoker, no pets, extremely quiet lifestyle, and I come with very good references. I never paid rent late and totally willing to submit to a credit check.

Thank you in advance!

Lofts in St. Henri?

I'm looking for a loft space with a sleeping area (either closed off or a mezzanine) in St. Henri.  I know of the places on St. Remi near Depot-Cle but are there any others worth looking at?  I need one that's as cheap as possible.  Under $700 would be ideal.

Does anyone have any input good or ill?  Personal experiences?  Hearsay?  Wild rumours off the street?

Thanks!

More Apartment Hunting Questions

Hi Montreal,

For those who responded to my last post, I got rid of my apartment already! It took a day and a half. So one CAN get rid of an apartment in an off month.

So, that said, now I need to find a new apartment. Here are two questions:

1). I currently work in Ville St Laurent off of the Transcanada. I get there by metro and bus thus far but this job will most likely change in June of next year and I'm not sure where I'll be. So here's the dilemma. I would like to spend roughly 500$ (give or take) with heat included and I'm willing to pay electricity on top if necessary. I understand that if I want a bigger apartment such as a 3.5, I may have to be open to parts of town aside from my little shelter of Vendome up to Laurier being "Montreal" to me (being from Winnipeg). Is there anywhere you can suggest where I can get to V st L in a relativly short amount of time, pay around what I mentioned, get a 2 or 3 and a half, and still have access to downtown/plateau in a fairly painless matter? Also, YMCA being near by is important which brings me to my next question:

2)I have been considering Parc ex because I hear you can get a huge apartment for a reasonable price. However, I go to the YMCA three times a week after work (in V st L).  There isn't a YMCA that seems to be that  close to Parc Ex.  So, are there any alternatives to the Y there that offer the same type of pool activities classes? Also, would it take me 8 hours to get to work in the morning from Parc EX if I have to get to Du College and still bus it from there?

Any help is appreciated.

looking for a room

Hi all,
I'm looking for a room to rent for (=from) septembre or octobre 2009 (this is when I'm coming to Montreal to follow a doctoral study of maths at UdM). I'd like to share (& create) a place together with other people, yet also need to have my own room (and so a possibility of disappearance). Might dream of a space open to energies and of wooden floors. I'm friendly to artists, punks & queers, cats & spiders, bricoleurs & vegans, experimental musicians & people who like tea... + to some other...
About me in cliches: I'm calm & decent, honest, respectful & responsible.

So let me definitely know if you have or know about a free room or if you're looking for one as well. Do it here or mail me:

searching for small apartment

Hello!
I'd be searching for a small apartment (1 1/2 to 2 1/2) for somewhere in September..
Ideally in the 500$-600$ range all inlcusive (or as much as possible). I'd rather it be in a quiet safe neighbourhood so I was thinking near Sherbrooke, Rosemont metro stations.. but any suggestions welcome!

Thanks a lot!

Bonjour!

Merci beaucoup!!

Looking to rent/sublet apt for two weeks in August

Hey

So, I'm going to be in Montreal August 9th to 22nd with my boyfriend. I'm looking for a (furnished) studio or 1 bedroom apartment for less than $300/week. I'm not picky ebout the neighborhood, would prefer it to be somewhere interesting, but I'm more concerned about price. I've turned Google (and Craigslist and Kijiji) inside out, but can't seem to find much. Do you guys have any leads?

Thanks a bunch!

apartment hunting

OK so I have been looking for an apartment for the last month or so now. I am starting way early (the lease ends in August). I check Craigslist and Kijiji on a regular basis.

However, I am posting here to see if anyone knows of something that is going on the rental market say around August or September. We are looking for a large 3.5 or a small 4.5 around 800-900 dollars inclusive of fridge, stove, heat and such like. If there are outlets for a washer, even better however the most important thing is to have access to a fridge and stove. We would prefer to live in CDN, NDG, the Village, the Plateau or downtown nearish Concordia and near a metro station. If anyone has any leads on this, a heads up would be very much appreciated. I realize that more apartments will become available later but I figured I'd post here as a shot in the dark.

About us: We are in our twenties, my boyfriend has a full time job, I currently have a job and have savings and we are okay will having our credit checked and with getting a middle aged family member to cosign as a guarantor. I will be going to school next year. We do not wish to be forced to pay a deposit (we're quiet people who don't throw crazy parties or go out of our way to break things!). We don't have any pets.

Thanks for reading. Merci pour votre lecture (et desolée pour les fautes de français)

Moving to Montreal

Hi! I'm from Toronto and I just found out that I have to move to Montreal for school. I don't know anyone else who has moved there, so I have no idea where to even begin with what things I have to do in terms of...well anything really!

I was hoping that someone could give me a quick checklist of what the standard things are that someone has to go through when moving to Montreal. Also, I'm trying to look for a place to stay, and so far I've only been able to find craigslist as a site to look at, so any suggestions about places to look would be helpful too!

Thanks!

apartment search and an afterthought

Hello!

I'm looking for an apartment, and I figured it couldn't hurt to post here. I'm looking in all the regular places (the Gazette, Craigslist, Concordia's Housing Bank, even driving around and taking down numbers) but maybe this will be the lucky place!

I need either a 1 1/2, 2 1/2 or a 3 1/2 ASAP. The more square footage, the better, obviously. My ceiling is 500, preferably with everything included (internet as well would be awesome, but I can't afford to be picky). If not, then it's still fine.

The ideal location would be in NDG, East of Decarie. Along Sherbrooke would be awesome, or anywhere near Vendome. I don't want to be any more West because it'd be annoying to have to take a bus to Vendome.

I am a quiet, nerdy Concordia student who needs her own little haven! Any and all help/advice is greatly appreciated.

P.S - I also need a job in the city, but my French is sort of mediocre. I could probably get by in a little cafe or something. Even dishwashing; I'm not picky (given that the place isn't super sketchy). If anyone knows of any openings, please let me know!

Coopératives d'habitation

Hi everyone,

I am a broke student with a sense of community and would love to live in a cooperative housing unit.

I just recently picked up the long list of coops in montréal but I really have no idea where to begin. I was told to look through the list of hundreds and pick the names of the ones I am interested in and send them each a letter of interest. It seems a bit of a futile effort as I have no idea which coops have openings.  Also, it would entail sending at least a hundred letters.

I would like to move by this July and so far have only found one coop that advertised their opening on the internet. Does anyone know of any coops that have openings coming up? Have you gone though this process and can offer some advice?

Merci!

Apartment Wanted

Hi everyone,

I'm in the process of apartment hunting and I figured it couldn't hurt to make a post here. I'm looking for a 3 1/2, my ceiling is 800-900 (everything included), preferably in the plateau no more east than St. Denis and no more north than Mont-Royal. If anyone knows of a place that fits this description, I would love to hear from you. Thanks so much!

St-Henri Apartment Swap/Rental/Lease Transfer

In an effort to help keep our beloved St-Henri affordable, my boyfriend and I are looking to transfer our lease (so the landlord can't just pick a new price to hand to new tenants), or swap our place for your place.  We're having a hard time finding an apartment, so if you're looking to move, maybe you can help us out!

We have a 5 1/2 on 2 floors on Irene, between St-Jacques et St-Antoine.  It's 800 a month and we don't want to see it rocket up.  There are 2 big closed bedrooms, lots of storage and closet space, we've redone most of the walls with plaster/paint (he's a professional), as well as some ceilings, the walls we didn't do are all neutral colors and couldn't decide how we wanted them.  There's some exposed brick in the living room, 2 balconies, chill neighbors, washer dryer outlets.  The place is awesome for a couple who want a big studio or office, a small family, roommates, etc.  We have amazing water pressure.

We're looking for a 4 1/2 (although a 5 1/2 would be considered of course) with 1 closed bedroom, a second bedroom or office, and balconies or a yard.  We'd like an eat in kitchen (here we have a dining room).  We need to downsize to save some money.  If you have a 4 1/2 in St-Henri and you're looking to get someplace bigger, or just a change of scenery, lets talk!  Craigslist & Kijiji are failing me.

Cheers!

(no subject)

I tried a bunch of the tags on Apartment finding in Montreal but am having trouble searching for a place around the Laurier-Mont Royal Metro area(s) past the McGill classifieds and Craigslist. Any recommendations on other websites to check out? Maybe a NTS or Concordia or UdeM site of some sort? I also looked well into Kijiji but haven't found what I'm looking for.

And in the case that anyone knows of an opening... I'm looking for a place of 2-4 people around the Mont Royal or Laurier metro stations with sunshine and great roommates.

Suddenly really, really need to move - know of a place?

Hello Montreal,

I am suddenly and kind of desperately looking for a new apartment for two people (me & bf) and two kitties.  We're already trolling every classifieds site, and have started biking around writing down numbers, but I thought maybe posting here would be worth a shot!  (Please forgive me for posting here instead of the mtl-apts community, but this one seems a lot more active.)  I'll spare the details of why we need to move so soon, except to say that we're being grossly mistreated, and there's basically nothing we can do to make it stop, so we have to leave.

What we need:  4 1/2 or bigger, hopefully 800 or less rent.  It would be ideal if there were 2 closed rooms. The sooner it's available, the better - we'll move as soon as we can, basically.

We're nice, quiet, very respectful and friendly.   If you have any leads, please let me know by commenting here.  It would help a whole lot.

Thanks!

apartment searching questions

so, yesterday I spent quite a while wandering around Point St. Charles looking for apartments to rent; lots of houses (and condos!) for sale, but rentals were nil.

my questions are:

- when is the best time to go apartment-hunting in this area? was I too early, or too late? or are the vacancy rates just crazy low this year?

- is there somewhere that landlords around there are listing their apartments? because the usual suspects (newspapers, craigslist, kijiji, university classifieds) are not at all helpful.

- does anyone have a 6 1/2 or 7 1/2 in Point St. Charles (or St. Henri) they're looking to rent?

thanks!

Apartment Wanted for April 1st

Hello Montreal people!
I've recently moved out to St-Laurent a few months ago and I've realized how much it's going to suck commuting 1 hr every morning during finals... so, I'm looking for an apartment downtown for April 1st to April 30th- preferably in the McGill ghetto, but anything between St. Marc to the west and St. Laurent to the east would be good enough. Would this be even possible or am I going to have to pull up my socks and keep dealing with the torture of getting up at 6 am?

Does anyone know any places that rent out their apartments by the month or by the week? (Or maybe you know a place! I promise you pie... Or sushi.) My boyfriend recalls one of his friends doing that for a month in the summer but can't remember the details. Argh. Help muchly appreciated!

dirt cheap boho

Hi, I was hoping someone could pitch me a place in Montreal where I can find a minuscule and seriously cheap apartment. Tiny odd corner somewhere. Maybe even a place that's cheaply grungy picturesque in a hippie way that an artist would love. Any ideas? thanks
