June 14th WWKIPDay

Hi Montreal,

Saturday, June 14th is WWKIPDay.. That's right, World-Wide Knit in Public Day. Not sure why it needs its own day but if you want to join in the fun, there will be a motley crew of knitters meeting in Parc Lafontaine at noon.

Description from Montreal Knits:
How to get there:
Across from Centre Culturel Calixa-Lavallée

Please bring:
Snacks, water, sunscreen and anything you desire. And your knitting.

The backup plan is:
We don't have one: if it rains, we'll either meet at a favorite LYS or one of our usual haunts. Don't know what we're talking about? Better visit our dotcom to find out more...

This KIP is not knitting exclusive
There are free bathrooms available nearby

Urgent Call for Support! Algonquins of Barriere Lake

This was sent to me, thought I would spread it around:

Public Assembly & Mobilization Meeting
When? Tuesday, March 18th, 2008, 6pm – 8pm (THAT IS RIGHT NOW, FOLKS)
Where? Native Friendship Center Montreal 2001 St. Laurent, corner of Ontario, Metro St. Laurent
Free dinner & childcare provided on site
Wheelchair accessible
Donations of non-perishable foods requested

The federal government has just deposed Barriere Lake's Customary Chief and Council – with the Sureté du Quebec helping to impose a minority faction as the new leadership – in order to get out of signed agreements with the community!

The Customary Chief and Council and the majority of the community have been struggling to have the federal and provincial governments fulfill several important agreements they've signed over the last two decades. The agreements are meant to give Barriere Lake a say in the management of their traditional territories, protect Algonquin practices, and give them a share of resource revenue from the logging and hydro industry on their land.

But rather than honour the agreements, the Department of Indian Affairs has ousted the Barriere Lake's Customary Chief and Council, and appointed an interim band council made up of a minority community faction, in clear violation of Barriere Lake's Customary Governance Code.

HD-DVD warning

Hey, I have no idea if anyone has posted this before but if your planning on buying HD-DVD dont. I've been following the HD-DVD vs Blu-Ray thing for a while and it seems HD-DVD may be shut down as early as this week.

With Blu-Ray being chosen by 70% of film studios alot of stores, Best Buy, Wal-Mart, Nexflix and Blockbuster have gone Blu-Ray exclusive and this weekend there were leaked rumors that Toshiba may announce this week that they will halt all production of HD-DVD players and recorders, obviously leading to all movie studios going Blu-Ray only.

After a few rumors that ended up being false that they stopped production the 16th it came out that they will have a full review this week and make an official announcement. Despite the low price of HD-DVD there just isnt enough support and you may end up with a paperweight.

Montreal World Science Fiction Convention

Good day.

Do you like science fiction and fantasy literature and other media?
Do you remember the days of Nebula?
Do you think the idea of thousands (literally) of people who share your interests coming to the city (and spending their money) is more than nice to think about?
Do you think it would be interesting to have some of your favourite authors and other artists - old guard and up-and-comers - all be in town at the same time for one huge 5-day event?

I added [info]anticipation_09 a while ago to my Friends List and I noticed this morning that it has finally gone live.

If you like science fiction and fantasy and would like to follow the development  or volunteer for the bid for a World Science Fiction Convention (Worldcon) in Montreal, you may want to consider checking it out. The final vote to determine the winner (they have been competing against Kansas City since Fall 2004) will be held in Yokohama later this year, but there are ways to help without being on site, from informing others to buying a membership for this year's convention and casting your vote for Montreal (you will also be eligible to vote for the Hugo Awards) even if you don't attend.

You can also buy supporting memberships for 2009 and apparel for yourself, or someone you know.

Some more information here: Worldcon and Anticipation.

The McGill Savoy Society Presents "Life Goes On"

Hey everyone!

I'm co-directing a fundraiser for the McGill Savoy Society and I'd like to invite you all to attend. It's called the Life Goes On and it is a collection of vignettes reflecting aspects of living paired with contemporary musical theatre. Once again, we've been working really hard to break away from the stuffy Gilbert and Sullivan tradition, so we've created an event featuring a full bar and a good old fashioned bake sale. It's all happening at the Sala Rossa (4848 Boulevard St. Laurent at Villeneuve) on Sunday, November 26th. Doors are at 7pm and the show starts at 8pm. Tickets go for a $10, and that covers a night with songs by Jason Robert Brown, Jonathan Larson, Stephen Sondheim and others. Life Goes On promises to be an evocative evening rife with poignant moments.

Reserve your tickets today at mcgillsavoy.ca!

---

Hello Montreal,

For those who are interested in photography, a good friend of mine is having her first solo exhibition right now. The subject of her photographs are dancers, since she is taking danse lessons herself. It's not very big, about 20 different pieces, but if you're in the area, it's worth stopping by to take a look.

The exhibition is at Studio Bizz, which is also a dance studio, at 551 Mont Royal, 3rd floor (it's right above the Jean Coutu near Mont Royal metro). It will be there until september 9th. Opening hours can be found on the studio website at www.studiobizz.com

Have a good day :)
