PrePaid Cell Phone/SIM Card Question
i'm going to be in montreal in a couple of days and staying for 4 days total.

i'd like to know if there's a reasonably priced place at the airport to rent a cellphone/buy SIM cards.

i'm not a heavy cell phone user (i don't own one) and i'm not really planning on making it a habit...so i'm pretty green when it comes to this sort of thing.

i only plan to use the phone to keep in touch with other people in montreal while i'm there.

any insight on the best and cheapest way to handle this is greatly appreciated!

many thanks!

p.s.: if i happen to have an unlocked cell phone device, does it have to be a gsm device for me to buy a prepaid SIM card to use it?

p.p.s.: should i just go to virgin, get a prepaid phone deal thingy and be done with it?

There are still a lot of public phones. OK a call cost you 2 quarters now ($0.50) but in the end it is likely gonna cost you less than any pre-paid service, for 4 days.

Agreed. You'll be wasting your money if you don't plan on using it after you leave Montreal. I'm pretty sure my SIM card cost me $25 when I got service from Fido, and then you would have to buy the prepaid cards on top of that (plus a phone, which would need to be GSM). Not worth it for 4 days, unless you could borrow a friend's pay-as-you-go phone.

well it just needs to be the right frequency, which is gsm 1900.

i had an unlocked nokia phone and it seemed that only FIDO was able to be used with it. they also do prepaid.

thanks!

it looks like i'll have to buy a device & prepaid deal at virgin when i get to montreal...seems like that's gonna be the simplest thing to do although i really didn't want to be stuck with a device i don't plan on continuing to use. my friends nag me to get a phone but i just never wanted one.

:/

Buying a new phone is so wasteful. Check Craigslist for SIM cards! If you must buy a handset make sure you sell it afterward rather than just chucking it into a landfill.

I have an unused SIM card I got with my new cellphone. If you want to buy that you can have it for, say, $20. But check Craigslist too -- I'm not sure what the going price is.

oh i wouldn't throw it in the trash - i know better than that!

:)

but i think i may just do the virgin prepaid phone thing...if i get an unlocked phone out of it, maybe i'll hang on to the device and re-activate it in a moment of weakness after i return home...
