Happy vernacular and slightly belated Birthday, America. Here's a birthday ghost. You can tell by the rakish angle of his hat that he is probably up to no good...

8:36 pm - Fishman

lesmcclaine
The fishman (or "creature," or "gill man") has always struck me as a daytime monster.  I wonder why that is?

Originally was going to draw a Triffid, but then it turned into some sort of Lovecraftian amphibious thing.

#13 The "True People" of the Ot Taaru.
Worshippers of NGastra, the mother-fish of the universe, the True People of the phantom plain of Ot Taaru believe they are descended from the celebrated first of NGastra's brood of thirteen dynasties of life. According to their mythologies, eternally sleeping NGastra stirred the universe into being during a fit of night-spasms, from the whorls of which the worlds, stars and sky were formed. Waking, NGastra chose to populate each of these worlds, that they might be cared for as she slumbered. First, she created the True People, then presented to them the spirits of trees, the spirits of water, and the spirits which inhabited both animals and the wise animals who could talk. NGastra then went on to create the spirits who inhabited fire, the spirits who inhabited the sky, then the things which were unseen, the spirits in darkness, the spirits who lived in words and then bright things which lived in the mind. When Ngastra brought forth the devils, the last and lowest of her children, the light of the infernal incandescence cast shadows behind the True People. It is their belief that these shadows became humanity, a wretched and pale mockery of themselves whom the True People have considered it their sacred duty to remove from the world over which NGastra granted them dominion - putting them in frequent conflict with The Grimhawks ...

6:47 pm - Monster Mondays - Bonnacon

boju
Bonnacon is really a creature where the less said about it the better. So I’ll just go straight to the source. Pliny the Elder, author of the worlds first Natural History Encyclopedia and one of ancient Greece’s most brilliant writers. His Natural History is over 160 volumes long and holds the closest thing we have to a complete record of Greek knowledge at that point. He must have thought no one would possibly read the whole thing when he slipped in this gem.

“Pliny- “There are reports of a wild animal in Paeonia called the bonnacon, which has the mane of a horse, but in all other respects resembles a bull; its horns are curved back in such a manner as to be of no use for fighting, and it is said that because of this it saves itself by running away, meanwhile emitting a trail of dung that sometimes covers a distance of as much as three furlongs (half a mile), contact with which scorches pursuers like a sort of fire.”

Yes, Bonnacon is Buffalo followed by half a mile of flaming dung. But words aren’t enough to convey it’s might. We need ridicules illuminated manuscripts of knights getting buffalo shit on them. Better bring a shield.

1:34 am - Funa-yurei

Funa-yurei Page1, originally uploaded by Craig Arndt.

Each year I put out a small yokai beast book, this years yokai book will be different then the last 3. Not only will I be including illustrations but I will be doing some comics too.
This is the Funa-yurei. Basically these guys work like Davy Jones, trying to trick (and sometimes force) people onto their boat and once you're on your damned to be on it forever.
I thought it would be fun if this Funa-yurei was just bugging random people while cruising down the street.

Does he get on the boat? click to find out! )

2:40 am - Monster Map from around the world

nenimo

Map of a world of Monsters, originally uploaded by Craig Arndt.

Cryptids or Monster from around the world.
Spinning around the dial we have Iku Turso, Mimi, Mapinquari, Umi Bozu, Barometz, Jiang Shi, Frost Giant, Mokele-Mbembe, Thunderbird, Chupacabra, Sphinx, Giant Squid, Loch Ness, Polevik.

The world map is a little rough cause it was totally eyeballed. Also, while creatures are color coded to their continent I found information placing the Polevik in Russia or Poland, and the Chupacabra in Mexico down to Brazil. In both cases I just put them with whatever grouping I thought looked best.

7:04 pm - Monster Mondays - Ugjuknarpak

boju

7swims, originally uploaded by Boju.

Todays Monster Monday by Dapper Cadaver comes from the Inuit (eskimo) people of Alaska, behold the mighty Ugjuknarpak! The unkillable sea-mouse of the sea that is also a giant!

Ugjuknarpak's name derives from the gurgling sound his victims make as he wraps his long prehensile tail around their necks and drags them under. His friends call him Ugjuk for short. Ugjuk doesn't have any friends though, because no one goes near Ugjuk's island. Ugjuk has exceptional hearing and speed, and a hide that cannot be pierced by any hunters weapon. Try kayaking over to his place and you'll be dead before you leave the harbor. All that will be leftis your overturned canoe.

Do not f*ck with this mouse!

12:49 pm - The Majestie of the Unicorne

mutleyjames

Remember - should a unicorn get close enough to touch you with it's pingers then you are most likely dead.

In the unlikely circumstance you live in spite of the odds, thrust several fingers into the gonophore sphincter, wherein two or more eggs are likely to be exiting during its excitable state. This should agitate the unicorn enough momentarily allowing you to escape being impaled on the wildly flailing bile duct.

10:44 am - Monster Monday - Memecoleous

boju
memecoleous
Today's Dapper Cadaver Monster Monday creature comes from India, by way of Europe. You see there was a lot of disagreement over what exactly a Manticore was. Some described it as a lion with the head of a man. Some described it as a lion with wings. Some described it as a lion with both the head of a man and wings. Some said it was like a were- lion that men turn into. Some described it as a lion with the head of a man, huge jaws with three rows of teeth, the tail of a scorpion and a voice like trumpets. This man was Pliny the Elder and he was considered brilliant. Some said the Manticore wasn't actually part lion but part tiger. This was crazy and clearly wrong, so they decided if a Manticore was part tiger instead of part lion it was a Memcoleous and it must be from India because that's where tigers are from. This helped a little, but they still couldn't decide what a Manticore was and only agreed on the lion part. This is probably because no one has ever seen a Manticore.

This is not a Manticore but it might be a Memecoleous.
