More Questioning Old Washington's Judgement [Aug. 30th, 2008|12:48 am]

McCain's VP Pick Palin Facing Ethics Investigation

"For most of her tenure as governor of Alaska, Sarah Palin has enjoyed widespread popularity and a reputation as a maverick who refused to stand by fellow Alaska Republicans facing their own ethics scandals.

But the 44-year-old Palin, who was selected as Sen. John McCain's running mate today, is now the focus of her own state ethics investigation as part of the so-called "Troopergate" scandal, a bizarre controversy involving the firing of a state police chief and his reluctance to fire an Alaska state trooper, Palin's former brother-in-law who has been involved in a bitter custody fight with her younger sister."

I mean, nevermind the fact that she has nno idea what a Vice President even does (Source).

Comcast to make monthly Internet use cap official

NEW YORK (AP) -- Comcast Corp., the nation's second-largest Internet service provider, Thursday said it would set an official limit on the amount of data subscribers can download and upload each month.

On Oct. 1, the cable company will update its user agreement to say that users will be allowed 250 gigabytes of traffic per month, the company announced on its Web site.

Comcast has already reserved the right to cut off subscribers who use too much bandwidth each month, without specifying exactly what constitutes excessive use.

Top 20 Kate Bush Songs [Aug. 29th, 2008|10:36 pm]

[music |Moving - Kate Bush]

As nothing more can really be said about Kate Bush's brilliant first five albums (of which Never For Ever is my favorite) that hasn't been said before, I must admit that I'm not all that fond of Kate Bush's later work. Oh, there are a couple of very good songs scattered here and there, and I have included some on my list, but anything after Hounds of Love has a difficult time holding my interest. The worst, least memorable Kate Bush album by far is The Red Shoes. The only song from that album I can recall is "Rubberband Girl", but that's only because it comes after "Breathing" in iTunes -- not a good sign.

Aerial was an improvement, but it is no match for any of her earlier albums; not even Lionheart, which is the weakest of the bunch. The Sensual World is the best of her latter period, but even that does not have the drive of her very best work. Take The Dreaming, for example. While not the most consistent Kate Bush album, it is certainly the most intense experience of her career. Get out of my house, indeed.

1. "Babooshka"
2. "Wuthering Heights"
3. "Hammer Horror"
4. "Cloudbusting"
5. "Breathing"
6. "Get Out of My House"
7. "The Wedding List"
8. "Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God)"
9. "Hounds of Love"
10. "The Infant Kiss"
11. "Night of the Swallow"
12. "King of the Mountain"
13. "Leave It Open"
14. "The Dreaming"
15. "Wow"
16. "This Woman's Work"
17. "James and the Cold Gun"
18. "Heads We're Dancing"
19. "Deeper Understanding"
20. "Violin"

I want to start writing about music here. It just seems more appropriate.

But because I like to get everybody's opinions before I make up my mind about anything, it's time for a little poll:

The question remains: if you're so addicted to sex that you check yourself into rehab for it, do you think you're gender specific in your tastes?

The Backwards History of Halloween Trick or Treating Part 1 [Aug. 29th, 2008|05:38 pm]

boju

chick halloween 1, originally uploaded by Boju.

In my previous post on the History of Halloween I kind of glossed over a very important aspect of the Holiday - Trick-Or-Treating. Well, I woke up that morning and found my blog TPed, my computer screen soaped, and a smashed pumpkins in my comments. So I better clear things up or smell some feet.

There are 2 persistent myths about the origins of Trick or Treating. One is that it originated from the Druids going door to door for sacrafices (see image above) and the other is that it originated from Mischief Night in the UK. Like a good horror movie, both stories make great spooky stories to tell yourself on Halloween, but shouldn't be taken seriously at all.

The above comic sets up the traditional Protestant Christian belief that Halloween is Satanic in origin and Druids or witches spent the night going door to door kidnapping virgins to be raped and sacrificed to Satan. Jack-O-lanterns were left with candles made of human flesh.

Note that I'm drawing a distinction between Protestant Christians and Catholic Christians. Part of the anti-Halloween vibe stems from the conflicts between Catholic Ireland which celebrated Samhain and Halloween and Protestant England which liked neither Catholics nor the Irish and celebrated Guy Fawkes day. Catholics tend to see the connection between All Souls Eve, The Day of the Dead, and Halloween without too much of a fuss.

As for Halloween, it was never celebrated by the druids. The druids of Ireland celebrated Samhain. When Ireland went Catholic they started celebrating Halloween. But names and religions aside, there is also no record of druids going door to door on Samhain or collecting sacrifices. The celebration of Samhain involved bonfires, fortune telling, dancing, apple bobbing, and a harvest feast. The druids were pagans and part of their culture had some witchcraft elements, but they did not worship Satan, who is part of the Christian cosmology. Jack-o-lanterns came with the switch to Halloween, but they were carved turnips, not pumpkins, and were lit with ordinary candles or coal.

According to legend, there was an Irishman named Jack, who was renown for his drunkenness and meanness. When it came time to die, the Devil came to collect his soul. Jack begged him for one last drink and tricked the Devil into turning into the coin to pay for it. Instead of going into a bar with his Satanic coin, Jack put it in his wallet, which bore a cross on it, trapping the Devil. Desperate, the Devil offered Jack one more year of life if he let him out.

One year latter the Devil came for Jack again. This time Jack begged the devil for one last apple, and tricked the Devil into climbing an apple tree. While the Devil was in the tree, Jack drew a cross on the tree, trapping the Devil. Furious, the Devil offered Jack 10 more year of life if he let him down.

When Jack finally died, Jesus wouldn't let him into Heaven because he was such a mean, drunken man. So, at the gates of Hell, the Devil refused him as well, saying "I want nothing to do with you ever again!"
So Jack was forced to wander in limbo between earth and the afterlife. He asked the Devil how he could light his way, and the Devil gave him a coal of hellfire, which Jack put into a turnip and carved a face on. Since the Devil wanted nothing to do with Jack, the Jack-o-lantern was placed at doors and windows to welcome in lost souls and scare away devils and demons.

So the original Jack O Lantern did burn hellfire, but aside from that was pretty anti-satanic. Plus, the devil in that story is so stupid.

The Irish brought Halloween to America in the late 1800's, but Trick-or-Treating didn't appear until the 1930's. Until then, the two were completely unrelated, and above all else, Halloween and Trick-or-Treating are not Satanic.

Part 2 to come.

Political cartoons are becoming a lost art. With fewer print newspapers, there are fewer editorial cartoons. Here's a good one.

Sarah Palin seems a particularly bad choice for McCain and the Republicans. If anything, she might help insure that white evangelicals will come out to vote. She's anti-choice, anti-gun control, anti-gay, anti-labor. It's a cynical choice, and a stupid one. McCain will lose, and with this choice is certain to lose by an even wider margin.

LATER NOTE: It's being observed that both McCain's wife and now his running mate are former beauty queens. Hmm . . .

Poltergeist: The Legacy [Aug. 29th, 2008|04:07 pm]

calliopes_pen
Looks like SurftheChannel just added season 1 of Poltergeist: The Legacy to their stuff. I had never seen the show, (the fact that it aired on Showtime would explain that) so I watched the first episode. It’s...a bit horrifying, but I think I might like it. Except for the demonic baby part being born in a day or so. Ick. Oh, and if anyone watches it--did anyone else think it looked like the Buffyverse vampire faces, whenever the possessed shopkeeper looked demonic for a moment? I thought it did a bit.

EDIT: Turns out the pilot episode was a movie (explains the length) and was rated R, according to IMDB. That explains that.

Up until now, all I knew about the show was from one fanfic crossover with the 90’s Dark Shadows.

I also watched the first episode of La Femme Nikita a few day ago (same site) and didn’t really care for it. If they manage to find and add Forever Knight and Witchblade, (which is on their list to find) I’ll watch it.

Also, for those that are interested, there’s The Fall Fandom Free-For-All, located here. It’s multi-fandom--people have a wish list the types of stories they want, and others try to fill the request. So far, I haven’t spotted a fandom I watch that I could do--but hey, I’m only as far as page 3 right now. I doubt I’ll ask for anything.

Somehow in this celebrity-obsessed media I entirely missed the story that David Duchovny's seeking treatment for sex addiction until [info]savia mentioned it overshadowing political coverage on the blogs.

All I can think is, man, Bree Sharp must feel especially dissed now.
