I wanted to remind people who don't know, that the 70th birthday of Prince Hans-Adam II of Liechtenstein is coming up on Feb. 14. In honor of this most auspicious occasion, I wanted to post some miscellaneous facts about Liechtenstein and about Prince Hans-Adam II:

In a referendum on July 1 , 1984, male voters granted women the right to vote
in national elections, a victory for Prince Hans-Adam who had supported the
legislation. Unlike many other constitutional monarchies , the constitution of
Liechtenstein gives many important powers to the Prince, some of which have
caused controversy in recent years.

Critics were, however, largely discredited when in March 2003, a popular
referendum bolstered the Liechtenstein dynasty's constitutional position.
Prior to the referendum, Prince Hans-Adam had announced that he and his family
would relocate to Vienna, Austria if the House's constitutional prerogatives
were curbed. The referendum confirmed the broad popularity of the Liechtenstein dynasty and underscored the populace's faith in Prince Hans-Adam as leader.

On November 27 , 2005 Liechtenstein voters rejected an initiative that would
prohibit birth control and living wills in the principality.

On August 15, 2004 Prince Hans-Adam II formally turned the power of making
day-to-day governmental decisions over to his son Prince Alois , as a way of
transitioning to a new generation. Formally, Hans-Adam remains Head of State .

this issue is getting more annoying by the month.

So Charles and Camilla got married. Camilla is now Princess of Wales, and when Charles accedes, she will be queen. Nevertheless, the plan is for her to not use either of those titles. I rather hope this plan will be quietly laid aside when the time comes: a queen is a queen. Also, I'd like to remind people that you don't vote for kings.

Really, the further we get away from the fairytale sentimentality of the "royal family" the better it will be for the Kingdom, and this most sensible of marriages is a positive step in that direction.

Bureaucrats are nowhere near as hidebound and pushy as they used to be. I can't believe none of them has suggested the simplest solution to Japan's succession problem: declare Princess Aiko a boy, and have "him" succeed as emperor. Not that I think it's a good idea, but I don't understand why I can't have the fun of watching a palace courtier saying, "But the emperor is a man, she declared it so herself."*

Akishino's comments seem unhelpful to my (English) ears, but perhaps Japanese etiquette is different.

The root of the problem, of course, is the emperorship restriction to heirs male, something often called "Salic law" when in a European context. The trouble the Japanese are now in is not something that's likely to go away in the future either, given the mathematics of the situation: since people average two children and average one son, an "heirs general" succession such as that to the British throne will tend to double each generation, while an "heirs male" succession needs pressure if it is to be expected to grow (thus the present troubles of the Crown Princess), and may quite easily shrink to extinction. This is perfectly acceptable for titles of nobility, indeed, most hereditary peerages in Britain are restricted to "heirs male". But no-one really cares that much if these becomes extinct, since the "fount of honour" can always make more (only it seems to have dried up for hereditaries recently). Monarchy is another matter.

Currently there are over 150 descendants of the Electress Sophia eligible to succeed to the British throne as determined by the Act of Settlement, and there would be more if Catholics weren't excluded. The United Kingdom may become the United Republic one day, may the gods preserve us, but not through extinction. There are six men in the line of succession to the Chrysanthemum Throne, the male-line descendants of the Meiji Emperor. The first two are sons of the present Emperor, neither of whom have sons despite intense pressure. So the third is the Emperor's uncle Hitachi, who also has no sons and at 68 isn't likely to start now. This makes the rest the Emperor's grandfather's younger brother, Mikasa, and his sons Tomohito (58) and Katsura (56), neither of whom have any sons.

Before the Meiji Restoration women were allowed to succeed, though only as a kind of stop-gap. And in those days emperors and princes had concubines, all of whose male issue was legitimate. If the Japanese will not countenance amending their constitution in this matter I predict they'll have to resort to one or other of these options in the generations ahead.

I saw somewhere the speech at the wedding dinner of the prince...

It happens to be that Im very into genealogy, heraldry and this sort of schtuff... (have my own, dark reasons to be so)

When I saw the father of the bride boasting about how his family put the vikings to run from Scotland (and heard the nobility laughing at the background while he stated this, what else to expect, they know the "lines" and all this) I was truly amazed.

It is very natural that a humble person, while sitting with important people tend to overdrive their deeds, so not to stay behind in importance, but this was a very dangerous ground on which he did tread upon.

(btw, funny the english family side was not there, doyou people know any who was there from the house of England?)

Even so, at the time he said those words his glasses fell from his face (and I sensed an ancestor spirit slapping him on the face, by hearing such a nonsense)

well... ...I do not know much about scottish nobility, but I know that MacDonald (MacDonnell, etc) is one thing, Donaldson is another completely different.

In fact, by having, by having "son" in Donaldson, he tends more to descend from vikings (Leif Eriksson, Svenson, Amundsen, Chrestesen, and many other "sen" and "son") Than of the original and very brave clan of the MacDonalds. (per mare per terras)

I know that in heraldry there is even a punishment for this sort of speech, once it can lead to violent discussions due to the family prides of the involved.

And another fact: This royal family of Denmark is not really a direct descendant of vikings but of other branch of nobility: The Oldenburg, from Germany. (the coat of arms of the three lions with nine hearts the queen uses is called in her case when described: "escutcheon of pretense", once it cannot be proven she descends from Valdemar Atterdag (who was the bearer of this coat of arms), but she may use it because she is the Queen of Denmark)

But of course I can be wrong, right?

so if someone knows better about this, please enlighten me.

Finally found a royalty forum. Yey!

I've always been interested in history and royalty. I got particularly involved in research when I was creating a royal family for my geofictional country of Fyksland like 3-4 years ago. Mainly to search for pictures and bios for people who I may add into the Fyksian royal family and of any real european royalties who could be related to them.

I'll be happy to describe the Fyksian royal family if anyone is interested.

There's has been only a couple of royal sightings for me though. I shoke hands with Prince Charles in HK in 1989 in one of those royal walkabouts. Also saw the Queen in living flesh for the first time this year in Hamilton, Ontario during her Jubilee tour in Canada.
