The Times They Are A-Changin'

Gallery Dv8, the outdoor "guerrilla gallery" curated by former Mojo's owner Wade Beesley, strives to represent "raw, innovative artists whose works often don't get recognized or appreciated by traditional galleries." Every so often Beesley turns his backyard into a giant art party/exhibition with live music. This Sunday, DV8 holds court yet again, this time turning their focus to works of a more urgent matter. The exhibition is entitled "Caution: Police State -- Politically Inspired Art to Disturb & Enlighten":
Artists have been urged to search their psyches in order to vent their frustrations regarding our current, tumultuous political situations. There will be painting, sculpture, performance, live graffiti, live music, and of course libations.
Slated to exhibit their latest creations are Michael Schliefke, Nathan Jensen, Ana Rodriguez, Angel Ortega, Colin McIntyre, Nathan Nordstrom, Tim Scott, Ian Shultz, Lee Bolton, James Webb, Glenn Bryant Worley, Dustin Parker, Mike Parsons, Hope Perkins, David Atherton, Bart Berggren, JD Fanning, and Augustina Rodriguez.
NOTE: Owing to the possible rains that are supposed to hit us later this evening, they've moved the event to Sunday, from 1pm till dusk.

In 1997, along with drummer Ray Jaceldo & violist James Alexander, Carl Smith formed the experimental jazz group E.C.F.A. Smith moved to New York City in 2001 and Detroit in 2002 & continued to perform and develop his own approach to jazz and new music. Initially studying with such avant-garde luminaries as Charles Gayle, Sabir Mateen, Rob Brown, Frank Gratkowski, William Parker, Matthew Shipp, Lou Grassi, Faruq Z. Bey, and Assif Tsahar, Carl Smith began to fully absorb the free-improvisational styles of late-90's free jazz in New York City. By synthesizing the energy music with compositions Smith and ECFA have created a unique sound world.

| | Kansas, 'Dust in the Wind' | ] | I have lived across the street from mojos daily grind since 1998 when I moved to Austin for graduate school. I went to fringware parties (lots free booze!), and soberred up at mojos. I saw every TV smash since they started. I remember all of the old baristas(os), and know the new ones. I loyally continued to hang out there even when Wade listened to some crack smokin employee of his or something and installed a pool table in the back room. I got to know a huge variety of denizens there. I met people there that I would later date, and/or sleep with. I saw the pieces of the 1998 national poetry slam there. I read more than a hundred great books there. Mojos still rocks hard. I hope the graffiti issue gets resolved so that there can be more artsy graffiti and less tagging. I have digital images of the old mojos graffiti and will post them if some one wants.
Anyway, I am moving to a different apartment far from mojos. There are other coffee houses just as cool, but a lot closer to my new apartment, and so I will no longer be going to mojos much. Maybe if I need a 3am triple americano, but not much otherwise. I will miss the place. But people change, lives change, coffee houses change, and all we do crumbles to the ground and we refuse to see. Its all dust in the wind. You can't step into the same river twice. You can never go home. Life is suffering and everything is transient.
I wish mojos the best. I hope that everyone that works there, and everyone that goes there for coffee, finds, if not true love, then at least a decent one night stand.
Thanks Anna for the free refills. I always thought that you were totally the hottest of the baristas.
I hope that Teresa is OK with her kid in Florida.
I wonder where Talal is.
I still hope to someday get in a DnD game with Steve or Joe. Too bad they are so snooty.
There are some cool new baristas(os) there now. I talk to them on occasion. To pitchers of coffee and ginger matte!
I hope that the new owner kicks ass and mojos become the killer coffee house on Guadalupe, once again.
Mojo = magic, and if you are at all aware of vibes, you can feel the magic of mojos. Mojos Lives!
I will miss the place. |

| Access point is now improperly hung up again |
[Dec. 18th, 2004|01:21 am] |
Because this community could use some rather more pedestrian content, I shall now inform you that the Linksys Wireless Access Point (WAP) is now hung up on the wall again, and without tape.
It's sorta nailed there, although a combined useage expert/carpenter would need to tell me if I'm abusing the language or not here.
Ok, that was all computer stuff so:
I walk often.
The pedestrian content now ends. |

| | Okay, so the mood I list is sappy. So what? | ] | Okay, all. I hadn't weighed in for the community's opinion yet. This won't change anyone's mind, I'm sure, but it's a humble request from one of the familiar faces still around our coffee shop.
I keep hearing everyone saying "Mojo's was a community." I have to agree. Mojo's was the people, who showed up to see other people. I understand wanting to see other people. If people don't want to spend money there, fine. Don't want to support JW? Don't. But everyone who is refusing to go to Mojo's because it changed owners and they don't like the new one personally/due to business practices/etc, then the communtiy bit it through no fault of JW.
I'm still there. I've gotten used to JW and Trevor, and have gotten to know that they've had reasons for everything they've done. I still see people who are cool to talk to, and meet new people, and have great conversations every time I'm there for work, for play, for study, whatever.
You know what I want for Yule? People to give the "new Mojo's" a chance. Yes, it is a different look. Yes, it is a different atmosphere. Some of the prices are higher than <insert your new coffeehouse here>, some of them are lower, despite arguments to the contrary. I've checked a few of them out. There are new faces, all of whom are cool people. The changes have been made, they're staying, we have beer again, JW is making money, and tips are going back up for the baristas. So, since Mojo's is staying Mojo's and staying, maybe it's time for the community to pitch in again.
The people working these days are myself (Jazz), Annie, Matt ( slomosexual), Caroline, Melissa, Summer, Suzanne, Nigel, Jennifer as a alternate, and yes, Trevor still has a couple shifts a week. Hope I didn't leave any of my awesome coworkers out. I'm working Friday Saturday night graves, 0100-0700, so if you want to try out the new Mojo's with a familiar face, come grab caffeine or water; I want to see everyone again. If not, well... I know not every Yuletide wish can come true. |

Thank you & yes, I totally agree. Don't get me wrong, I love MoJo's, it really was my home away from home, hell I even met my future husband there, but all in all, MOJO'S IS DEAD! Maybe not the place itself, but the MoJo's, the energy & atmosphere really are dead, I agree, he should change the name, it's no longer MoJo's... |

| Dangerous Territory |
[Dec. 14th, 2004|07:09 pm] |

Hi there, I'm not even sure I should be posting in here, being that I am a former regular who has pretty much deserted MoJo's (other than to see Jazz, hi Jazz!)However, reading over the "rants" between Matthew & my fellow MoJo's regular, I felt overwhelming compelled to put in my 2 cents. Although I have not been going there for as long as most, I did call MoJo's my home, and I now feel as if I've been basically kicked out! It's not just the physical changes, it's the entire attitude and energy of the place. Any given night/day, you can drive/walk by and the place literally looks like a graveyard! Those of us who have been around awhile are really quite appalled at the way JW and his buddy Trevor have made us feel like we don't belong there. There was actually an incident where my boyfriend (whose been a regular for 6 years & has spent literally thousands of dollars there)overheard JW refer to all MoJo's regulars as "bums"! How fucking pathetic is that? To take the people that have kept the place going for so long and treat them like absolute shit!! See, I'm actually getting pissed thinking about how fucked up he has been to us! MoJo's used to be a place where people from all walks of life & backgrounds could go hang out and oddly enough be welcome - NO MATTER WHAT. I could go in, get a drink/food, chat with my friends, whatever, and never once feel uncomfortable! Walking in that place now, I feel like a complete STRANGER! The assholes running it don't even know my name!! How's that for "customer appreciation"!? You know, there was someone that gave an awesome analogy of what had happened around there, they said that buying & taking over MoJo's was like marrying someone that had kids (us regulars being the kids) and then saying "Well, I love you, but not your kids, they have to go" and then shipping them off to boarding school or something. Honestly, I completly agree with that, when JW took over, he knew what the place was like, but with his recent actions, he's showing us that he just honestly doesn't give a fuck! His "Oh well, we'll replace them" attitude might work for a little while, but I'm almost certain that these new customers won't be as loyal as the old one's were. I'm betting and almost hoping that the place will go under long before it's time and then no one will care, you've already pushed away those that truly loved the place. |

| | devious | ] | I was told in another community it would be interesting to post this entry here, I'd like to see peoples views on it. I just joined, never even knew there was a community for this place. Here's the entry exactly how it was posted in another community.
So what happened to Mojo's?
I live farther north so I don't make my way there much these days, one of the last times I went to mojo's they were in the middle of taking everything down, and I was told someone else bought the place.
I was just curious if anyone knows why they changed owners, cause honestly I think the place sucks now... I loved looking at all the paintings and artwork, the atmosphere, and it pisses me off that it's gone. It was kind of the one place I went where I could just chill, I know there are other shops around but for some reason I never liked em' as much. =P
Anyone else feel the same? or know anything more about this? |

| Brand New Open Mike Series! |
[Oct. 28th, 2004|11:38 am] |
| [ | mood |
| | cross-posty | ] | Hey, everybody!
Drop what you're doing and come on out to the kick-off of Austin's newest open-mike reading series, MOJO'S OPEN MOUTH, tonight at Mojo's Daily Grind!
The reading starts at 8pm, and will be co-hosted by Austin's fabulous slammaster Mike Henry and yours truly, Hilary Thomas.
The featured readers are two of the shiniest shining stars of the Ausin poetry slam, the gorgeous and talented Krissi Reeves and the gorgeous and talented Christopher Lee. These two amazing poets will take over hosting duties for the monthly series in November, so come out and give them your support!
The open mike will have a five-minute time limit, so you can explore some of the longer work that doesn't fit into the slam's three-minute format. Also, please feel free to bring group work!! Collaboration amongst the fine writers and performers in our community is much too rare an animal! Let's get it off the endangered list and make it a fearsome predator!
Here's the skinny on tonight's shindig:
THURSDAY, OCT 28 Mojo's Open Mouth spoken word sessions 2714 Guadalupe, 8 - 10 pm
Come on out and see the show, kick a poem or two, enjoy some fine caffeinated or fermented beverages at Mojo's Daily Grind, an earn the right to brag that you were there when it all began!
See you tonight!
Hilary Thomas |

Mojo's is officially reopened! There have been a few significant changes, but if you ask me, it's really nice. The worst change is that it feels like a lot of people have abaondoned it, but together, we can make a difference! </cliche>
Anyway, hope to see everyone here! Tonight is $1 all drinks! Iced, hot, or alcoholic, come out for $1 drinks!

It's funny how you never realize how addicted to something you are until you no longer have that one thing. Even if it is something most people wouldn't wouldn't care if they had or not. Anyway, last night wasn't too bad, although only a few people came by, it was still fun. As mentioned before, all are welcome to come by. It's looking like MoJo's may be closed a little longer than we al originaly thought, possibly til end of week. Let's hope not. |
