There really is no definition to this in any dictionary, and really its meaning is a source of debate among scholars.

There may be many other poetry communities, but this community strives to be something totally different in its own regard.

While "contemporary" may be strictly identified by the "current" time and constrained by definite dates, the idea of what is "modern" holds none of those constraints. (and no, we aren't talking in terms of modern/post-modern either. If this confused you, you have been an English major for too long.)

For instance, Walt Whitman, who published in the middle of the 1800s is very much a modern writer. To say "modern/contemporary poetry" is only after 1960, for instance, would be ignoring the important ground breaking work of those who influenced the current generation of poets.

This community therefore distinguishes itself from other poetry communities in that this question of "modernity" is what we are concerned with.



This is not a place to publish your own poetry.

Everyone is welcome to contribute, but please note that the community is moderated so that we can have a little control over what goes in, mainly this is not a place to publish your own poetry (Did I say that already?)

Also, we do sort of have a format. Please follow it.

Title of the poem in the subject line
Poem in the body, followed by the author.

All entries are set to friends only so that these poems are not just floating around on the internet. You have to join the community to see them.

All right, lets have fun.

I also don't plan on advertising so that this remains somewhat small. So tell your friends!
