I liked the look that she was getting just from the static modeling lights, so I pumped the ISO a little and snapped this as-is.

Now that was fun! Here are ten shots I took yesterday during the Zivity workshop here in San Francisco. Of course, any excuse to visit SF is a good excuse, but the workshop was great, and all of the participants said that they learned a lot from the instructors, Philip Warner (Lithium Picnic), Conan Sorrano (AddictedImage) and Christine Kessler.

Kayla In Shadows

I shot Kayla out at the mill last month. One thing I decided to try was getting her into the shadows inside the sawmill building and put her right into the sunbeam that was coming through a break in the wall. I knew that this would blow out portions of the frame, so I set the camera to expose for the reflected light and bracketed the hell out of the series. I then picked the frames that had the best exposure to my taste and went from there. These had almost no adjustments in photoshop except bringing the black levels up just a touch to get rid of a small amount of noise.

Three Month Warning

We are now a little under two months from when I'll be thinking about shooting my Eight Nights: 2008 set.

Hannukah begins on Sunday, December 21st this year, so I'd like to have the set shot, processed and done by December 15th. That means shooting it by November, though I could do it at any point between now and then. Indeed, shooting it earlier would mean I could get prints done earlier and have them available (meaning that if I went this route, I'd offer the model a share of the profits of a "real" print run. I've not done a "real" print run for this series yet).

Seattle-area models interested in this project should get in touch. One model or many models, either is possible, as I've not settled on a location or theme yet for this year's series.

Photographers - if you have any of those stereotypical shots of models in front of a badly-placed, wrinkled bedsheet, I need them for a spoof site.

If you have any, you'll know exactly what I mean. Come on, send me the ones you took years and years ago when you just got started. I promise that I won't identify you!

Well, Model Mayhem is experiencing 503 errors yet again. I'm completely fed-up with the amateur way that site is run at this point.

It appears to be a custom front end on top of phpBB. While I, personally, don't like dark site design, I have to admit that it's well put together. While there are some rough edges, I'd sure like to see it get more users. Some of the features they have appear to be very useful.

Apparently the first 5000 members get some kind of "pioneer" preference.

The Mill Is Open Again...

If you are a Pacific Northwest Area Model, or are planning to be here at all this summer...

The bad news: the publisher I'd contracted for the mill book has raised their prices for the third time. As such (and as I have the option), I've canceled the contract and am looking for a new publisher.

The good news: I can shoot more at the mill until I find a new publisher, since the layout will have to be re-done to their specification anyway. If you're reading this and wanted to get a shoot done at the mill and thought that you couldn't because I'd sent the book to layout, consider this your unexpected second chance. My schedule is both busy but flexible this whole summer, with weekends and weekdays equally available with advanced planning. They key is advanced planning.

The mill is located in Preston, Washington, about 30 minutes east of Seattle on the I90. Note that if you want to shoot late light, we're talking 9pm this time of year.

You will receive all of the benefits of a trade shoot (downloadable drop of edited and retouched images and/or a disc at your choice), and I'll also throw in $25 for gas since the mill is a bit outside of Seattle. The arts supports the oil companies!

I also intend to enter a few shots from the mill in the 2009 Seattle Erotic Arts Festival. If any shots are suitable, I will also share profits from any prints 50/50 with the model(s). But consider this optional.

I would like to thank everyone who gave me their support. I have passed the 100 endorsements mark and look forward to the election!

While I am clearly enjoying the tongue-in-cheek platform of running on the b00bs party ticket, I am quite sincere in my desire to bring the advocacy of the artists on LiveJournal to the advisory board. My candidacy is serious, and I hope to demonstrate that my knowledge, experience and sense of humor makes me an ideal candidate.

LiveJournal needs a voice for artists (photographers, models, writers, and artists of all kinds) on the advisory board, and I intend to be that voice.

I've been an active member of LiveJournal since 2003 and regularly participate both artistic as well as discussion and debate communities. I have and continue to maintain and moderate a number of communities, both high-volume as well as smaller ones.

I've also been involved with the Internet, and the networks that were to become the Internet since the early 1980's, having worked on and help define some of the earlier store-and-forward protocols that ran early Usenet (anyone remember UUCP?). I've been around the block a few times.

I don't take BS from anyone. That, and I have a hell of a sense of humor.

Oh, and Esther Dyson knows me personally. Just ask. I'm not sure if that's a point in my favor or against me, though.

ShootNotes.com and Identity Verification

As some of you know, I started a new site last year called ShootNotes.com. The goal of the site is not to be another OMP or Model Mayhem - there are no forums (other than for site-related issues) or galleries or portfolios. Instead, ShootNotes is building itself to be a centralized contact management system for models and photographers that serves as the core of a reputation and verification system.

We hear, all the time, "Hey, models, check references before you shoot!" when it comes to the Internet modeling and photography arena. What I (and my team) are trying to do with ShootNotes is create a site where that reference checking can be done with ease. Each member can verify any number of accounts at portfolio sites (like OMP, Model Mayhem, MuseCube, Model Brigade, Model Coast, etc) and have a single profile that clearly states who they are, what they do, and where you can find them. Additionally, the second major component of the site went live over the weekend.

Here's the announcement of the new feature. I hope that models and photographers see the benefit and value in what we're trying to do, and how this might help resolve some of the problems we have to deal with in our industry.

ShootNotes.com Announces Identity Verification!

Finally, a key component towards solving one of the most difficult challenges to Internet modeling and photography!

One of the major issues with Internet modeling and photography is knowing that the person you're talking to really is who they say they are. ShootNotes has partnered with Trufina, a leading provider of online identity verification services to solve this problem.

You now have the ability to verify your identity and link that verification to your ShootNotes account. Your name, location and date of birth will be securely verified and incorporated as part of your private ShootNotes data. After this verification process is complete, your data badge will contain the Trufina seal, demonstrating that you have verified your identity. Your real name and location can then be added to your data badge as verified information if you wish. Alternatively, you can choose to keep that information private, and simply represent that it has been verified and is on file. Your privacy is yours to control at all times.

Models can show that their date of birth has been verified and displayed, or simply represent that they are over 18 or over 21. The days of being surprised that a model is actually 17 are over. The days of a model not really knowing who a photographer is are over.

Best of all, with the new upcoming "Shoot Notes" database, when a model and photographer schedule a shoot, both can choose to provide the other with their verified identification, privately. Models and photographers who share their contact information after scheduling a shoot will be able to do so within the system and confidentially. You will now be able to know with whom you're working when you schedule and confirm the shoot. No more guesswork! And this is just the beginning - with all of the features we have planned this year, this is just the start.

ID Verification will cost $10. During the Early Adopter period, through April 15th, that cost is only $7.95 - Trufina has lowered their cost for early adopters. Additionally, after the early adopter period there will be a small yearly renewal to cover re-validation, but all early-adopters will receive "lifetime" service and will not be charged renewals.

Every day you share identity information. You use driver’s licenses, credit cards and business cards to verify your identity and credentials. But the Internet was built without a way of knowing with whom you’re interacting. ShootNotes.com has partnered with Trufina, a service that allows you to create a verified identity, and securely share your information on the internet.

By putting you in control of your information and giving you a way to ask others for theirs, ShootNotes and Trufina provide a unique way to build and establish trust in your online interactions.

What is Identity Verification?

Most simply stated, identity verification ensures that you are who you claim to be. More specifically, identity verification is a multi-step process that verifies your name, age, address, and telephone number using a proprietary data-testing algorithm that confirms and correlates data contained in public record databases to ensure that every member passes the most rigorous set of qualifications possible before verification is approved.

How long does it take?

Signing up takes about 5-10 minutes. First we will ask you to provide information about yourself, including your name, address, date and country of birth, phone number, and last four digits of your Social Security Number. Then we will correlate this data with public records databases and credit records and use those records to generate a quiz about you that only you should be able to pass.

How long does it last? When does it expire?

Your verification does not expire, but identification information may change over time. For example, when you move your identification information will change. The verification date will be shown on your ShootNotes badge. You may renew or update your information at any time. During the early-adopter promotion, all members who sign up will be marked as "permanent members" and will not pay ShootNotes renewal fees.

Why do I take a quiz as part of my Identity Verification?

The quiz is how we verify you are who you say you are. Some of the personal information you provide is likely to be known by many people other than yourself (telephone number or address, for example). The quiz allows us to test your knowledge of information that only you are likely to know (prior addresses and older financial accounts). By demonstrating your knowledge of personal information, you are proving your identity.

If I don't answer the quiz correctly can I still be verified?

If you do not pass the quiz, we will allow you to take the quiz up to 3 times. Be aware though, that the questions will be different. If you do not pass the quiz after three attempts, you will need to contact Trufina Member Support to discuss alternative ways to verify your identification information. Trufina will work with you to verify your identity.

Why does the sign-up process require the last four digits of my Social Security Number?

We understand that your Social Security Number is a very sensitive piece of information, as is your online identity. We need to verify that you know at least part of your SSN in order to accurately identify you, which is why we only ask for the last four digits of your Social Security Numberb> (SSN) during the sign up process.

Does ShootNotes have all of the personal information used to quiz me?

No. The personal information used in the quiz is maintained by Trufina, and ShootNotes has no access to it. Once you're verified, ShootNotes has access to your real name, address, telephone number and date of birth, and the fact that you have verified them. Knowing this, we then place the "ID Verified" graphic on your badge and note the date that you passed the verification quiz. We also note that your date of birth makes you over the age of 18 or 21 (at your choice).

So what's the bottom line?

Simple: with your badge showing that your identity has been verified, you are representing to the modeling and photography community that you are who you say you are. You can then choose to share that information with those with whom you have scheduled shoots, registered ShootNotes members, or even the general public. How much of your data you share is up to you, but the fact that you've verified your identity can be demonstrated for all to see and know.

What does it cost?

The fee for identity verification is $10. This covers the cost of the Trufina services and data retention. During the initial rollout, however, all early adopters of the ID Verification system will receive two benefits. First, the cost will be only $7.95. Trufina feels that this is a valuable offering to the Internet modeling and photography community, and has lowered the cost for early adopters. Additionally, all early adopters will receive "product lifetime" service from ShootNotes. That is, after the early adopter period, there will be a yearly renewal fee to maintain current data. Early adopters will never pay this fee.

When does the Early Adopter period end?

Everyone who signs up before April 15th, 2008 will be considered an Early Adopter and receive the early adopter benefits.
