Killed By Stupid
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1059512/Road-rage-woman-burned-death-ramming-rival-motorist-revving-engine-car-went-flames.html

For the link-phobic:
"A road rage driver was burned to death after ramming another vehicle and setting her own car on fire by furiously revving her engine, it emerged today.

Serena Sutton-Smith, 54, had deliberately driven into the back of Paula Small's stationary car and then refused to get out of her Vauxhall Nova as she sat with her foot on the accelerator.

Sparks caused when a front tyre disintegrated and the wheel dug into the road, ignited brake fluid in her engine and set the vehicle alight.

The victim was so overcome with anger she refused to get out of her burning car and even threatened a would-be rescuer who tried to persuade her."

More in the actual article.

Well, at least she's a shoo-in for a Darwin award.

No, at 54 she's not likely to have (more?) kids. The Darwin Award is all about people removing themselves from the gene pool before they reproduce.

What the holy fuck is wrong with everybody on this post, especially the OP? It says in the article she was bi-polar and therefore suffered from mood swings and extreme rage, and her MENTAL ILLNESS meant she couldn't appreciate that she was putting her life at risk. Jesus fucking christ people, mental illness =/= stupid. WTF?

Mental illness is not an excuse. Yes, in this case it contributed to her death. That doesn't make the actions any less stupid.

Edited for typos.

Yeah, but being mentally ill doesn't excuse her actions. She suffered from mood swings due to a bipolar disorder. Mood swings don't typically make one so damn idiotic. I've had mood swings before, and I've done some pretty stupid things because of them, but hell, they were stupid. Really, if her mood swings were so severe that having one meant she wouldn't recognize danger (which, I'd like to add, is a sign of either completely idiocy or something other than just a bipolar disorder), then she ought to have been watched by a caretaker, or at least treated in some way.

It may not be funny, but I'll never say it wasn't stupid.

Brake fluid is basically light oil if I recall correctly, so I suppose it would ignite if you tried hard enough.
As for what it was doing in the engine, christ only knows. That said, it's the daily mail, so anything in front of the dashboard counts as "the engine" as far as they're concerned.

Hey, I'm bipolar... and I can tell you that if you go off your meds (which is what this case sounded like), these actions are, sadly, not all that unusual.

Bipolar people tend to mess around with meds (I've done it, too!) and think they don't "need" them anymore because they are "feeling better"... but the reason I was "feeling better" was BECAUSE of the meds! But I was incapable of listening to either logic or reason at the time, and ended up in the hospital after being talked off the roof of the building where I worked by a swat team because I thought I could fly.

*snicker* It's funny NOW. Was SRS BZNS at the time, tho. Thank goodness I'm here to talk about it now, if it wasn't for the people who love me, I could have easily met a tragic end that day.

So yeah - to you and me, it might seem "stupid" - but in her mind, it was business as usual. *shrug* such is the nature of the beast.

[info]rebelaessedai

Totally disagree.
Well, not with the whole part about feeling better because of the meds. I've never gone off my mood stabilizers because I know this vicariously. Thank goodness.

But she put others in danger with her actions. It worries me to think that she wouldn't go and put herself into an institution if she was feeling that bad. When things get that bad, my survival instinct kicks in and forces me to do absolutely nothing until it passes.
