How Many? How Much?
I was in an airport on Wednesday waiting for the shuttle van from my hotel to show up and get me. Nearby, three girls were waiting for one's mom to come pick them up. Bored, one pulled out a small box of trivia cards and started to ask questions to pass the time. This is the conversation I overheard as best as I can remember it (I don't know their names, so I'll refer to them based on the color of their shirts).
Blue: Okay, my turn. Ask me.
White: 'Kay. Third question. "If there are four pecks in a bushel, and I say, 'I love you a bushel and a peck,' how much do I love you?"
Blue: What? I've never heard anybody say THAT before!
Green Stripes: It's from a really old song, I think.
Blue: (giggles) That's weird.
White: So how many?
Blue: What? Oh. Uh... read it again.
White: "If there are four pecks in a bushel, and I say, 'I love you a bushel and a peck,' how much do I love you?"
Blue: Six! Six pecks.
Green Stripes: Did you fail first grade math or something?
Blue: I'm serious. It's six.
White: How do you get six?
Blue: You just said there's four pecks in a bushel, right?
White: Yeah.
Blue: Yeah, so four pecks in a bushel plus two pecks in a peck... that makes six!
Green Stripes: Two pecks in a peck? Where did you get that?
Blue: She said it!
White: No, I didn't. I said there's four pecks in a bushel, and the song says "I love you a bushel and a peck.
Blue: What's the answer, then?
Green Stripes: It's five. Four plus one is five.
Blue: But there's two pecks in a peck, aren't there?
Green Stripes: How many miles are there in a mile?
Blue: ... One.
Green Stripes: How many gallons in a gallon?
Blue: One... Omigosh! I am such an idiot.
At least she realized her stupidity. Fortunately for me, I had a pretty mean cough that day, so I was able to disguise my mocking laughter.
