Leaving aside for a moment the glaring magnitude of the "if"s in the early part, it's the last sentence that really boggles me.

Uganda is one of the few countries in Africa with declining HIV infection rates. And the last sentence is entirely true. If you have sex with someone who's partner just died of AIDS you will likely be infected. And given the state of things in Africa as a whole any kind of education is valuable and needed.

"Even though HIV prevalence in Uganda is much lower than it once was, it still remains very high, and AIDS is still claiming tens of thousands of lives each year. Such a severe epidemic has a considerable social and economic impact. As AIDS usually kills young adults, it depletes a country's labour force, and weakens educational and health services. Deaths among young adults also leave behind thousands of orphaned children and grandparents, placing an additional burden on the community or the state.3"

Agreed. Considering the literacy and education rates in Uganda, especially in rural places where infection rates are highest, and the further confusion spread by religious institutions in the area, it's a hell of a lot more depressing than mock-worthy that entire nations are suffering such losses due to misinformation. Because of educational efforts like this, the transmission rate is dropping and the country is meeting some of the educational goals set out in the 2000 Dakar Framework for Action.

Those of us living in the west are extremely lucky to have medical knowledge be common knowledge, to know (most of us at least) that condoms can prevent HIV transmission rather than being told by religious authorities that they might actually infect us, and to be aware that every sexual encounter with an infected individual runs a certain risk of transmission.

	Not really funny. The authorities are, for once, doing their job. Everything said in that leaflet may be obvious to you, or us, but not to them. Information is not available to everyone equally. So not funny or mock-worthy. (Reply to this)

I'm thirding the "this isn't really that funny" sentiment. There are simply different mores, attitudes, and levels of ignorance and misinformation in countries outside of the first world (and in them, too, for that matter). It may seem silly to us, but to them it's news.

We're talking about countries where they still believe that having sex with an infant will either cure you of AIDS or prevent you from getting it. Pointing out to them that having sex with someone who was married to someone who died from AIDS could very well be a completely foreign concept to them, and it might actually save their lives.

	Oh, I fully agree with bringing sex education to the developing world. As I said, my chief mock was that last sentence. If someone knows AIDS is sexually transmitted and knows his brother died of AIDS and still doesn't realise it's risky to have sex with someone who had sex with his brother, that's not ignorance, that's stupidity. Despite all the people above stating that lack of education is no excuse for stupid, the last sentence of that ad still made laugh.
I would have assumed that even given a lack of education and an astounding amount of missinformation, one would ASSUME that a person dying of a sexually transmitted disease might have passed it on to his wives. Do they not have the common cold in these countries? If they do, and they don't apply the same logic to other diseases, then I do find this mock worthy.

My parents came back from Africa two weeks ago, and the main reason why AIDS is so rampant is because the Church does not condone any safe sex practices, and so the people think it is wrong to use protection. And in places like South Africa, where a husband can have 5 mistresses, and where those mistresses have other 'boyfriends' that is a recipe for disaster.

We may laugh at an advertisement like this, but in third world countries they don't know better.

	Because of course the practices in South Africa are the same as in Uganda; it's just next door, the same way you can look at customs in El Salvador and know everything you need to about Missouri. Africa is a big place, and contains a lot of different cultures and beliefs. Just like Europe or North America, in that regard. (Reply to this) (Parent)(Thread)

	If I used the word "cunt", that would be okay, right? There's not supposed to be any PC whinging around here so there shouldn't be any problem with the term "cunt". I'm just asking hypothetically, I wouldn't actually use that word, I think it's beneath me. (Reply to this) (Thread)
