Couple jailed for gaming addiction

A couple in Scotland who claimed to be addicted to computer gaming have been jailed for three months after admitting that they neglected their four children.
The father, 28, claimed to have become addicted to online gaming, and that his wife had also been affected. Arbroath Sheriff Court was told that the case was one of the worst ever seen by police and social workers.
Social workers were called after neighbours spotted two of the children naked on a window ledge. The workers found a baby in a heavily soiled nappy, and two of the children required emergency dental work. One had to have all her teeth removed.
Sheriff Norrie Stein said: "The reports say there is difficulty in identifying a community-based [sentence], and I'm afraid to say, for you two, there is no alternative to a prison sentence.
"This neglect appears to have occurred over a significant period and, despite extensive home support, clothing and laundry services, and parenting classes, you have clearly chosen to disregard your children."

I just got new computer time limits set on me so my mum could also impose them on my stepdad because of that game.

A whole bunch of my circle of friends have just cut themselves off from the rest of us to play WOW. One has QUIT HIS JOB AND MOVED BACK HOME WITH HIS PARENTS so he can play it more. I've seen at least two relationships break up.

When it came out at the beginning of the year, I convinced my fiance not to buy it because we needed to write our theses this year*, and he didn't, and is now very glad I didn't let him get addicted to crack.

*He downloaded the open beta, and played it constantly, taking days off work and bitching at me when I asked him to come to bed. Eventually after we had a fight because I rang him to ask him for a lift home because it was raining heavily, I had a cold and didn't want to wait half an hour for a bus, and he didn't want to take 20 minutes away from playing the game to pick me up, he said that maybe he had a problem.

Hoping it wasn't FFXI. I know I've done my variations on "gtg, need to spend time with my son" or "afk, feeding child/putting him to bed/insert-other-parenting-duty-here". And seen others do it too.

Do you have a link to the news article? All I can find via Google are links to gaming message boards.

Feh. Of course the headline says they were jailed for their gaming addiction, when they were actually jailed for neglecting their kids. That woman who left her baby alone all night because she wanted to go to a bar wasn't jailed for going to the bar.

And that was more of an accuracy nitpick than anything else... I meant it along the lines of 'people who play video games get singled out for their addiction', but these people were not that kind of 'gamer' anyways. Any kind of addiction that harms the people you're responsible for needs to be cut off, but the headline is misleading.

It doesn't happen only in Japan anymore :D

I'm really an videogame addict. I have to put an alarm clock to note me when I've played for 2 hours. I usually play 5 hours a day (play 2 hours, then have a break, play an hour break again and another perioid of 2-hours) when I have a new game, but.. not feeding their kids? That's just.. beond addicted.

How did they even have time for sex? 4 children.. good lord..

haha, I'm the same way. I recently switched games (all my guildies left me, you see.. :( ) and I think nothing of playing 5 hours a day.

However, I also am a college student with my classes in chunks so that I can have maximum free time. I don't like spending 30 minutes of my 70 minute break walking to and from class. :P So I have a lot of afternoon free time. In fact, I'm about to go start up now... after I finish some more research on Isabel Allende!

also, sorry for rambling at you, random internet person. I'm a talkative girl today! :P

God... this sounds like the people I nanny for, or at least what they'll become. It's just one baby, though. But it is WoW that ruins their lives. I'm just waiting for the day he gets his hands on a bottle, with formula still in it, that's 3 weeks old that they're just too lazy to wash out or even put in the effing sink...
