Taking puppy love way too far

I thought there were laws against this

And just in case the link fails again:

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (Reuters) -- A woman in New Zealand says she is breastfeeding her pet puppy because she wants it to protect her baby daughter as they both grow up.

Kura Tumanako told the NZPA news agency on Wednesday that she had started breastfeeding the Staffordshire bull terrier pup after her baby stopped taking her milk.

"I didn't want to waste it so I gave it to Honey Boy," she said.

According to NZPA, Tumanako said she had fed the dog twice a day for the past week but would probably wean it off in about six weeks' time. Her baby, now two months old, is on bottled milk.

"I wanted to raise it (the pup) with my baby," she said.

"I wanted to bring it up with a baby. It will protect her as they grow up," said Tumanako, who lives in Hastings in New Zealand's North Island.

"He drinks more than the baby. It doesn't hurt, but it's a little bit ticklish."

There aren't. It's also a relatively common custom across the world to breastfeed non-humans. There was controversy earlier in the year over a photograph of a Cuban woman nursing a hutia, and in New Guinea women are known to nurse pigs.

yeah, i just read a news story not long ago about a woman in india who nurses a baby monkey. apparently she's a devotee of the monkey-god hanuman, and had recently had a baby after years of trying, and then her husband (a woodcutter) found this orphaned monkey in the woods so it's been "adopted."

of course, none of this is any weirder than us drinking cows' milk...

I suppose it's something like the practice of having a newborn pup raised and nursed by a momma sheep, so it grows up thinking the herd is its pack and protects them accordingly. But still...*squick*. I just hope the infant stopped taking breast milk on her own, and the mother didn't wean her so early just so the dog could have it.

after her baby stopped taking her milk

It would seem that was the case...

I think it's rather strange that she's doing this, but as long as she's feeding the kid adequately (on bottled milk according to the article) I guess there's nothing wrong with feeding the "leftover" breastmilk to the dog...

Of course, since she's still nursing, it will take her longer to stop lactating...

small puppies nurse. That doesn't mean it's starved. And if the puppy associates the woman as its mother (which is certainly does) it will naturally want to be nursed by her.

I won't say stranger things have happened, but a family friend of ours found a newborn kitten and gave it to a near-birth dog... the cat was nursed with the puppies and grew up thinking it was a dog.

To me, the stupid part is that she claims her 6 week old self-weaned... then instead of working on continuing to BF the baby she taught the puppy to latch on. She could at least pumped & give EBM to both the puppy & baby.

If the puppy is young enough, it doesn't need to be taught to latch on. I had a kitten once who would suckle just about anything when you pet him (I think he would remember his mommy or something).

I don't think it's stupid or harmful. We're all mammals here. One mammal's teat is just about as good as another's. People have nurser pets all the time. If there's milk and a nipple to latch onto, instinct will take over regardless of whether the nipple is human or a dog's. After all, don't moms breastfeed their kids for the purpose of bonding as well as nurturing? Who's to say the same effect won't happen with the puppy and the woman? I think it's sweet and shows she can treat human and animal babies well.

My brother gave me this book called 'An Underground Education' that basically is the hidden story behind everything we 'think' we know about the arts, literature, medicine, famous people, etc. It's a really amusing book. Anyway in the medicine section there's a bit on how in the 18th and 19th century leading doctors used to recommend that young women suckle puppies, either when pregnant for 'practice' or after their baby was born to prevent engorgement (i.e. if baby wasn't drinking it all).

So while it might seem weird it's not completely without precedent ;)

Also, I agree with what some people have said, sure it's weird but as long as it doesn't seem to be harming the mother, the baby, or the puppy, there's really nothing wrong with it...

Just curious - how many of you here were at one point breastfeeding mothers?

Nursed my kid for two years and it really, really hurt when I didn't have milk released. Sometimes the whole breast would be as hard as rock, so I'd have to carefully coax milk out so the baby could latch on - and doing that hurt a lot too.

It's not unusual for a baby to go off the breast and prefer the bottle, or refuse the bottle altogether and prefer the breast, or switch around. If the baby decides to go back to nursing at her breast, at least she'll still have a steady supply of milk.

Tis strange, eccentric, but not stupid, methinks.
