I walked into the local Starbucks on campus tonight, wanting a little pick-me-up after a few hours of studying. I notice there's only one girl in line. Yippee, maybe I'll get my coffee within 10 minutes. I I see her go for the wallet, and pull out a ten dollar bill. I expect to hear something along the lines of 'White Chocolate Mocha, please.' Instead, I get:

"Umm...do you take cash?"

i think starbucks is "evil" because i've seen instances in which there are multiple stores within mere blocks of each other, seemingly only to serve the point of driving out competition. with such market saturation, each individual store suffers because it has to compete against the other, yet the gigantic corporation prospers because its brand is completely dominant. i just don't think such acts are fair to smaller (and often better, though less successful) coffee houses that simply can't handle competing with a ubiquitous near-monopoly.
i would write more, but i'm tired. if you happen to be curious as to why people think starbucks and wal-mart and whatnot are "evil" then i suggest reading No Logo by Naomi Klein.

I don't see that equation anywhere.

They are called "evil" because it's shorthand for "monopolistic bastards with overpriced coffee who run local coffee shop owners out of business by using their big money to spam their locations everywhere".

Thank you for putting my feelings into a coherent sentence. That's a REALLY good way to put it.

At least once a day someone has to come into my Starbucks (which meanwhile is the opposite of the yuppie-dom that most people picture Starbucks to be - vast majority of our customers are recent Russian immigrants, not wannabe artists with laptops) to do the "Starbucks is evil and makes crappy coffee!" rant.

I just listen, shrug, smile, offer a sample of whatever's around so they can actually decide if the coffee (which most of the time they've NEVER tasted) is good or not. It usually makes them go red in the face and storm out, and every once in ahwile makes a really cool regular customer.

I don't have any feelings about the company either way, other than "Hey, they give me a paycheck. And awesome benefits. Rock."

I used to work at a Barnes & Nobles Cafe (they serve starbucks coffee, but that's not the point) and once a woman came up and stared at the menu. She was standing right next to the espresso machine, right in front of all the drip coffee machine and canisters and bags of coffee beans and grinds. After a moment of thought she asked, "Do you have coffee?"
Ouch.
I politely (just barely) said, "Yes." And pointed to the menu that she was already staring at.
Ouch.

Has anyone ever tried to order a plain cup of coffee at the evil empire? Not Latte (or my favorite, Latte with Milk), cappucino, espresso, vanilla, hazelnut... no, I just want a plain ol' cup of joe... they look at you like you're some kind of philistine.

I like to really confuse them and ask for some Earl Grey or maybe Pekoe... I figure, what the hey, hot caffeine, right? ;)

I'm with you on the "just a plain cuppa coffee" thing.

I either make my own or buy the 65 cent coffee from the litle streetcorner carts.

Best coffee in the world is in those NYC street carts... Mmmm...

pst! They actually carry Earl Grey tea! /whisper

No the problem with the people just ordering coffee, is that they'll come in, and grunt, "Small." Now, usually when this happens, You have to ask, "A small what?" "Just a small!"

It tends to scare the newbies, someone yelling at them because the "valued customer" won't say what he wants to drink...

Which is ironic because the Philistines actually invented many of the blended coffee drinks we now enjoy. A papyrus discovered from the reign of Ramseses III refers to merchants from the southern part of Canaan bringing gifts of "gold, myrrh and espresso macchiato." And there is evidence of steamed milk being added to coffee on the coast of Canaan as far back as the 12th century BC.

Yeah, I order regular coffee all the time. Never had any problems. And as for tea, the branches around here have the tea bags sitting out by the register, so you just pick what you want and hand it to them, tell them what size.

I just ask for a "regular coffee". What I get is a beverage that closely resembles coffee in look, taste, and smell, so I'm assuming that it is, in fact, plain coffee.

Then again, you never know. :)

Wtf? Not even a silly "Do you take out of state cash?" Just a question as to whether they take cash?

The only place I knew of that did that was the AmEx travel agency at a former employer of mine.

I like the cold drinks, such as Frappuccinos, but the hot coffee - of any kind - makes my stomach unhappy. And as far as their tea is concerned, you can get the same stuff in a grocery store (or in some kind of shop in your area) and make it at home, for a much lower price.
