My Little...Potty Mouth...?

In the last two weeks we've been getting some complaints about the use of language in some of our episodes. Up until now they've been in the form of anonymous emails and a 'no name' post to our guestbook. A post in the LJ Community earlier today made us think it was time to bring this debate out into the open.

We really do want to hear opinions on the subject so we're opening this post up to comments. If you want to keep your comments private, feel free to drop us a line at admin@mylittletransformer.com

Thanks, and we're looking forward to hearing from everyone! ^_^

Honestly, you guys, I always thought, kept the swearing rather minimum. I can hear the same and worse on "Saturday Morning" TV programming.
Silas, Mary, I like what you do.

Yeah. Cause man-o-man, violence in MLTF vs. Saturday Morning violence is comparing firecrackers to nukes. Geeze. I love it as it is myself. If this gets big defineately do an episode bleeping "the" or somesuch.

To start off, it doesn't bug me to hear cursing at all. Obviously, since I curse all the time :P
But, I think it's funny to randomly hear a curse word bleeped completely, maybe once in a few episodes.

I find it more comical when only used sparingly.
Strangely bleeped swear word > swear word.

We understand, and we can guarantee that it won't get any worse. Like I said before, I guess we just got a bit crazy with it lately. ^_^

But in our defense, I was looking over our episode list and adding some "viewer discretion" warnings and found 3 out of 44 episodes with some wordy-durds in them (at least by my count).

I never noticed it! LOL I feel kind of dumb now. I mean it must be a really insignificant amount because I honestly never noticed. I mean either way I don't care if you do swear some not like I never heard them words before!

Or you can do what Thunderblast did in one episode of Cybertron "I need to get the fuNk out of here" like you totally know what word she was implying there.

I think some of the appeal of swearing in MLT is that it's so out of character for the toys. Hearing that stuff come out of a cute little pony's mouth is so strange that it becomes funny. In that regard, I think it should stay. However, I also think it should be used sparingly and limited to only very mild swearing, not the stronger words. If those are used, they should be bleeped out. In fact, I think bleeping a word can often be funnier than using the word itself. I think MLT should be something that everyone can comfortably enjoy without the fear of being embarrassed if you share it with a friend, or mother.

We try to make sure all the 'big budget' swears are bleeped or cut if they're used. In the case of the now-notorious episode 44, we meant for the "Oh Sh*t!" to be cut off much earlier and overwhelmed by Primus's "WHOMP!" sound effect, but we misjudged the length and the quality of our viewers' speakers. If we do decide to use potty language later down the road (and looking at the next couple of scripts, I myself don't see any instances) we'll be a lot more careful. ^_^

I think a whole episode dedicated to bleeping would be good. You know, like bleeping out the word "the" or "hi", and then get the ponies & transformers complaining to the censors about their use of bleeps.

I could care less one-way or the other. It's your show, do what you feel is best for it.

I have always compared this show to Bugs Bunny. I know that sounds strange, but it's true. The violence is, whats the word, un-replicatable. Kids aren't gona get tackled by 1000 colorful horses looking for candy. It's pure Bugs Bunny. And that's great.

As for the language, I like the idea of a "Bleep Episode". That sounds funny. Also, if you bleeped the cussword out entirly. It can still be funny without teaching kids new words. I know I'm a rare case, but I hadn't even heard the F word till I was 16. I'd just like to preserve a little innocense if I can.

Then again, how many kids watch the show, and how many adults?

Also, sometimes non cuss words are funnier then cuss words. Any one an cuss, but it takes skill to come up with a new vocabulary. If you watch Farscape, taken in context, do you know how bad a word "Frell" is?! It's about five times worse then the F bomb. Transformers has Slag, Scrap, Slith, Primus help us all, all that good stuff. Smurfs has, well, Smurf. Maybe yall should come up with a MLTF cuss word and use it all the time. That could be the end of the Bleep Episode. :D

So, my point being I don't mind bleeps, but make sure you get the entire thing. I want to be able to watch this no matter who's int he room. (unlike RVB)

We know something's bad at work when our dear Christian lady down the row says "Holy Flatulance!" Non-swears can often be way more hilarious than half-bleeped/cuss words.

Well, you've already heard most of my opinion on the matter, but I'll ramble some more. Whee!

Personally, I think the humor in MLTF is wonderfully well-rounded. I'm not worried about the swearing getting out of control because, really, swearing has only been used in very few, appropriately comedic instances in the series, and you've already made hee-larious use of non-swear words as well ("Oh, Sweet Primus! What IS that smell?" XD).

So yeah, I have much faith in you guys and your comic prowess. I can sleep soundly at night knowing that MLTF will never have to depend solely on potty language to pay its bills.

Not much to add that everyone hasn't said. I kinda figured Galvatron was supposed be cut off, so it was a flub as much as anything. I don't mind cursing, but would prefer that if you guys are gonna use, keep it sparse. More funny that way.

Random thought: the Transformers have their forms of cursing ("slag" and "Sweet Primus" for example), but do the Ponys have anything? That'd be interesting, and weird.

I didn't really notice the cussing, actually.

I think some people are just easily offended. Oh noes, you didn't bleep out "oh shit!" I hear worse things in the grocery store than that. If it had been "holy fucking asstarded shit" or something, then maybe bleeped, but oh shit is about as tame as cussing gets.

There's a big difference between swearing for swearings sake (like in Goodwill Hunting...seriously, was the f*word needed that many times?) and swearing "appropriately"--for comedic purposes. For the most part, MLTF has been really good about using it only where appropriate for the situation, it's not like you're having them curse every other word. Maybe it's b.c I'm not overly offended by swearing, so when I hear it it doesn't bother me, but I really don't think it's that much of a problem. Plus, we can't forget that what is labelled as "swear"/"curse" words are completely cultural...it used to be that using the word Gadzooks was one of the most terrible things you could say...now we use it jokingly all the time (probably b.c no one understands the reference any more). I have no qualms w. whatever you decide (it is your show, afterall) as long as you don't take the show and bend it to something unrealistic in the name of appeasement, though I highly doubt y'all would do such a thing.

Oh, & Silas...were you in Anders the other day? Oneechan said that she thought she saw you.

While I think the clean episodes are funny, honest feedback: where profanity is intended for a laugh, it often gets an opposite effect from me. I think you are producing a great crossover, and have come up with some wonderful ideas; but I personally and also the children and parents don't want their kids exposed to this language please. Thank You. Also, you have proved yourselves to be great in the area of creativity, but the repetition of shooting an opponent can get a bit tiresome and over used sometimes. Also, sexual content between characters, should be not present in a respect to help guard the youth and those who struggle in this area. Thank you. Again, you are very creative, and with about 50 episodes, you have proved it. The majority of those episodes are clean. You can do it in a clean way; you've done it before, and we appreciate seeing it again this way: Clean. Thank you. And I appreciate your attention to my concerns, that I'm sure I share with many.

I think that's the real concern. Is it gratuitous and is it moral? Maybe it's better to be humble and put others needs before our freedom. This would show real maturity and respect. I would thank you and give you kudos for protecting us from unnecessary obscenities. And think how many more fans you would get, and also the ones you would not lose, if you just kept the language and content on a G level.

I think that MLTF shoud go ahead as usual... If the parents and the kiddies dont want the cursing then all they have to do is just not watch the episodes. I think that MLTF is more viewed by young adults and teens who would enjoy the humor and not take offense to the content. So basically f**k all who has and issue with the episodes....:}

Foul language or swearwords should not be on your shows
(Anonymous)
2007-10-29 12:03 am UTC (link)
My name is OptimusPrime52885, and I didn't want to make an account yet, till I get to know the site better. You can find me on YouTube by that name.

Here is my thought on the subject of allowing such language on the shows

I know that most of you don't have issues with swearing and maybe you swear yourselves, now I'm not trying to make myself seem innocent but I do not swear, I don't, I really don't, and I'm 22. And I think it's setting a bad example for the kids that are watching, making it seem ok when it's really not, I know that teens and adults talk that way, but that doesn't make it ok to talk like that

Now, I say this respectfully, that saying "If you don't like it, don't watch it" is an inconsiderate statement, people who say that, they're not thinking of other people, they're just seeking to entertain themselves with trash talks and bathroom language

I care about what people say, and it offends me to hear such language, and I think that if you have a certain character in your video, don't try to change that character's personalizes, in other words, if they don't cuss in the show, don't make them cuss in the videos

I realize that we all say things we shouldn't just like we shouldn't say bad words even in private, it's not a good thing to do.

I think that anyone who cusses has a limited vocabulary, like they can't talk without cussing

Now some of you say you don't have issues with bad language, that's fine, it's your life, but don't allow it on shows where the kids are watching, it's like making a bad thing looks acceptable

Now I'm not telling you guys what to do, that's my view on this subject. Again, it's an inconsiderate, insensitive and rude statement to say "well if you don't like it don't watch it" That's not being considerate, that's selfishness, that's only seeking to entertain yourselves with things that are not good or righteous

I would encourage you to do what's right and do good deeds, swearing cussing or cursing are not a good deed, it's evil, believe it or not, and just because the world is full of evil does not mean that you should accept it as acceptable and give into it.
I like this sentence in my Sunday School Lesson, it said
"It refers to behavior that is proper, appropriate and decent. We are not to behave like those who live in darkness, but as those who live in the light. The basic idea is to avoid evil."

I hope you understand me and if not, then maybe you don't want to understand.

Anyway, I hope all of you are well
God bless y'all

well you see i didnt realy hear any bad langue on the vids and i have watched them over and over, your right that if the charcters dont say it in the shows so they shouldnt say it in the vids but look at the vids they are funny heck unicron as the easter bunny?
and stuff like that well has Unicron in the cartoon series ever acted like that the answer would be a big fat NO but its just a vid done by some ppl who want to make funny vids so the charcters dont have to act 100% like there cartoon counter part so easy up on saying they should.
now they do give warning saying there is bad langue and its the parents and person judgment call to decide "hmmm should i watch this?" not the ppl who make it i dont belive a lot of kids will go watching the vids and start cussing beacuse they might have seen a pony do or a robot do it.
dont try to censor ppls work and art
