The Best Baseball Story You'll Read Today

In the 1993 MLB Amateur Draft, the San Diego Padres used their first pick on a first baseman named Derrek Lee. You've probably heard of him.

You probably haven't heard of their second pick that season, a high-school pitcher out of Lakeside, California by the name of Matthew LaChappa. A full-blooded American Indian by heritage (his father is head of the Viejas band of the Kumeyaay tribe), LaChappa had a nasty fastball and two types of curveball. He was projected as a possible #2 or #3 starter in the major leagues.

LaChappa never reached the bigs. In fact, he didn't get past Single-A Rancho Cucamonga.

Find out why Matt LaChappa's career was so suddenly cut short, and why he's still earning a paycheck from the San Diego Padres. It's quite possibly the noblest thing they do.

That is possibly the coolest baseball related story I've read in years.

Thanks.

I'm surprised you didn't say anything about "Well, if the Dodgers were in this situation..."

But honestly, I kid. That is a very classy thing for the Padres to do.
