Younger MKA
Okay so regardless of how much I love Mary-Kate and Ashley I can't help but ask myself the following questions.  When I look at the pictures from 2006 and before that i miss brunette MK and classic blonde ashley. Like now they have a more "rock glamour" style which is cool but it was just so much easier to relate to back then and they seemed so much more real .. i dont know its hard to explain. Like when i watch the good old movies like Our Lips are Sealed, Holiday in the Sun etc and then i think about them the way they are today i wonder if they ever expected they'd turn out the way they are . Did they think they would dress/ talk like the way they do now? Well, the worst stage of MKA (not that it was really bad but still) was the BLEACH blonde MK and A with the red lip, they looked unhealthy and unhappy. When i see photos from that time i wonder when i watch the old movies if they would be proud of the way they grew up and if they could go back in time and change anything.  Anyone feel the same way?

Don't get me wrong though, I still love Mary-Kate and Ashley more than life itself!

Thats funny I was wondering the same thing the other day when I saw a set of those gothic pictures.
I don't think they knew how they were going to turn out.. no one really does. It is how you react and adapt to your situations and they have been through a lot so I suppose every one goes through phases. They werenever going to stay the same sugar and spice girls they were in So Little Time (ever though they were awesome then too!)
I love them too. Sometimes I cringe now though when I see them but most of the time I love what they do and how they look :)

When I look at pictures of them from 2001-2002 they were so much..fuller. They have both lost so much weight compared to how they used to be.

Maybe even 2003..I'm not exactly sure when this was, but I'm sure most of you know what I mean, hahaha :)

Well, I think part of the reason they were so 'wholesome' back then is because they HAD to be. They had to uphold the image of innocent girls-next-door because it's what their entire brand was built upon. Now that they're older (and their fans are older), they're more free to experiment and be themselves. They were very cute back then, but also very generic.

Yeah I kind of agree with you.

If you are famous and young, or maybe even if you aren't famous, people don't like you to CHANGE. Any child stars I think, to some degree, are in a way looked down up when they get older. People almost act shocked that they are older, not innocent and all these things. What do people expect? lol! It is a little bit ridiculous. There was no way that MK&A were always going to be the way they were as teenagers, whether that was their choice to be like that, or like you say, that they had to be.

I can agree with the OP, that yeah they did look less healthy after they got older and sometimes dressed very ridiculous. I can understand where you are coming from. But I think they are just trying different things to see what it means to be a grown up version of themselves. At the end of the day, it would have been much more weird if they didn't change at all. I'm just glad I didn't have to do that in the middle of a tabloid magazine, fueled by millions of dollars. At least they had each other since they both went through all of that at the same time. I'm sure that helped. :)

Everybody looks like they did when they were 13 years old. At that age you don't have a "style" or your adult personality yet. Back then they looked like faces in the crowd and now they have turned themselves into fashion icons.

I also think they probably look back and are more embarrassed of how they used to be with all the cheesy movies haha!

I don't particularly like their drab "goth" chic thing they have going on in that photo, but I don't like their beach ditsy blond look either.
They just looked like every other stupid 16 year old pop singer back then. They had no sense of style, and just looked like the girls next door.

Sometimes lately, they don't look as good as they used to. But I hold that to the fact that they are both very much into fashion, and are both willing to try new and different things out, and set trends. Sometimes, the looks they concoct are not always winners.

See, for me personally, I agree with you on their 2006ish look. I think they have never looked better in this photo right here:
Photobucket
I honestly think they are at their absolute best in this photo. MK should always have darker hair and Ashley should have light blond. They pull it off so well.

Also you do notice in that picture you posted that they are practically dressed the same way and look almost identical? As they got older, as you know, they were getting really sick of being marketed as MK AND ASHLEY all the time and just wanted to be their own people...which is why I think they sometimes go so drastic on their looks...to be identified as different people, and to be fashion icons by pulling out all the stops.

Again, I think that they look strange sometimes because they are interesting girls who do weird and interesting things with their fashion and their appearance. The good thing is, it keeps all of us interested and on our toes! haha How boring would it be if they looked EXACTLY like they did back in their tween movie days?

interesting post/topic by the way! :)

Agreed 100%. I don't like Holiday in the Sun or any other movie from the tween era (except NYM, which I think is a bit better), because I stopped following their careers then. They were generic and plastic and generally boring in my opinion. I became interested again around 2004, when they finally started dressing themselves and 'came out' so to speak as being two separate, interesting people.. oh and finally stopped straightening their hair all the time!

i agree too! i was always a fan of MKA because they are the same age as me and i grew up watching full house... but i lost interest once i got to be like 11 and older because i didn't care anymore! but once they started becoming people i ended becoming obsessed again. with that said, i do prefer their look around 2004 more, however that might just be because i look back at those photos with a sense of nostalgia & i'm like hey, that's why i love mka!

Though I wish the girls next door where I live looked that pretty. Seriously being a guy I can honestly say that I was actually secretly in love with them and perhaps still am. As a boy I couldn't say that to my friends because it was "not done" but at the same time I had the feeling they felt the same way about them (if they know them that is)

They cetainly were and still are prettier then the avarage girl next door.

it's odd, i know there were men out there counting down until they hit legal age and i often wonder if they feel the same way about them now that they've changed so drastically.

i think you're totally right. even though they both looked best with their hair like that (brown & blonde combo) they could never just stay the same because the girls are constantly reinventing themselves. it's incredible. they have this revolving new look that i love to watch.

And this wasn't too long ago!

Everyone goes through changes with style though.. it gets boring looking the same all the time, but I hope the goth chic look passes over quickly becuase it does nothing for them.

I kindof like them better now. I like that there's so much proof that they're dark, and flawed, and real. They're not wholesome and MK seems really fucked up, but I love her like that. I love how they used to be, even though when they made movies between the ages of 11-16, until New York Minute, I lost interest in them because it got boring.
I think they just grew up and actually became adults, and realised that there is so much more than the movies their mother puts them in, and they just seem real now. I like that you can TELL they have issues. Big issues. And yeah I reeeally didn't like it when MK got all bleach blonde and red lipstick and creepy vampire goth, and maybe that was a trend attempt, or maybe it was just a reflection of how she felt on the inside, but I love them so much more now. Their looks change all the time and it's so urban and modern and they pull off whatever they try. I mean, I definitely prefer it when they don't look so pale and pasty and with the stringy hair, but I prefer them like that, really, with personality, than how they are in the first photo, just the same carbon copy of 'happy' as a label.

wonderful thinking, im on same page as you.

they turned into a big metamorphosis, and dont want to follow hollywood standards to please the medium anymore, like i said its all metamorphosis they will grew out of it, they still will be considered as fashionista and fashion mogul regardless.

but syndicate of mary-kateashley will always be branded them, like memories have to be a part of you forever.

I have to agree with m4lc4. I actually do like them as they are now. They're more real and not so cookie-cutter and what people think two cutesy blonde girls from Full House should be.

They haven't become 'dark' or whatever, it's just all about style and trying new things. I know if I kept my hair one color and wore the same kinds of clothes for the rest of my life, I would go insane! It's good (and not to mention, fun) to try something new and 'play dress up' every once in awhile.

I know you're (the original poster) just commenting on how different they've become and how weird it is to look back, but they're not in their young teens anymore. They've grown up and become who they really are, expressing themselves not only in the clothes they wear, but in their career changes, as well. I admit myself, I have a guilty pleasure and an unbelievable soft spot for films like Passport to Paris or Winning London (not NYM, though, yuck), but I do prefer MK and A being themselves, rather than fictional movie characters.

Am I the only one who thinks they look hotter than ever before? I totally dig the goth glam rock look they've embraced. Its extraordinary, yet spectacular. Although they might seem a bit lost (in interviews and statements they've made), I'm pretty positive they like they way they've turned out.
