The door slid open and Azuma flicked his cigarette onto the floor behind him before he let himself in, looking over the gathered students as the door slid shut again behind him. They weren't in their uniform lines, but clustered in small groups, mostly co-ed.

"I'm Azuma Hijikata, and I'll be your instructor. I see that you've managed to introduce yourself to your respective partners." That was practically unheard-of. Usually the brats stood around dumbfounded and stared at their partners as if they'd never seen a member of the opposite sex before. Maybe this group was actually clever.

Azuma grinned broadly. Yeah right.

He waved a hand at the wall behind them and said, "Since you guys are so sharp, the next thing to do is get to work. This guy is going to be your PRO-ING today -- this is the Cueval.

"The Cueval is a simulator that will give you the real sensation of being out in space with only a PRO-ING between you and the vacuum. This subreality will be connected directly into your head, which means your reactions -- and injuries -- will seem very much real to you. But no more real than when you're actually out in a PRO-ING, when that metal is as much flesh and bone as your real body instead of just dead weight.

"That's why we need Candidates to pilot the PRO-INGs, and Repairers to monitor them. Your Repairer will make sure you don't get dismembered if your PRO-ING loses a foot."

Standard speech, nothing that wasn't covered in the GOA Informational Manual that no one ever read. Azuma rubbed the back of his neck and checked his clipboard. Numbers 61 through 65. "You'll be taking turns in numerical order, so Number 61 will be first in the Cueval. Anyone who hasn't yet first needs their Repairer to perform a routine diagnostic check to get your information in their scanners. Any questions?"

The new candidates for pilots have just finished a week of grueling physical exams. Their speed, endurance, jumping ability, reflexes, grip, arm strength, spine, abdominal muscles, and sense of rhythm have all been tested to the limit, and they have been put through a physical check-up courtesy of Dr. Rill. Interspersed between these physical tests have been mandatory lectures in which candidates learn about GOA, GIS, Ingrids, Pro-Ings, and other relevant material to their Curriculum. Today, however, the candidates have been directed to meet outside the Cueval practice room with no further instructions...
