Does anybody know any course in creativity in science?  I'm interested in this theme.

Many thanks!

How much does it cost to live around Boston? Apr. 21st, 2009 @ 06:00 pm
[info]bulby01
Specifically, what would you estimate is the lowest yearly income with which one could live (safely and with a reasonable minimum standard of living):

* somewhere within Boston/Cambridge/etc. urban areas, by oneself?
* somewhere within the urban areas, sharing resources with one or more friends?
* somewhere within reasonable public transit commuting distance of the urban areas, by oneself?
* somewhere within reasonable public transit commuting distance of the urban areas, sharing resources with one or more friends?

Also, any thoughts on the housing/rental market, especially what it's like in the current national economic conditions?

If anyone's looking for summer housing... Apr. 3rd, 2009 @ 11:48 pm

I'm looking for a sublet for my bedroom, fully furnished sublet available in Somerville, right in Davis Square. Move-in date can be anywhere between May 15 to June 1. It’s a less-than-five minute walk to the Davis Square stop on the Red T-line.

Rent would be $900 + approximately $70 for utilities (including cable and internet).

We’re on the first floor and there’s a living room with TV, a fully furnished kitchen (and a nice one at that), and bathroom.

The room has a closet, a dresser, a desk, and bed. There is access to a free washer and dryer in the basement and there is one parking space in the back.

I have a roommate already, she’s in the journalism department and she’s really cool. It takes about thirty minutes to get to Emerson.

Like I said before, you can move in between May 15 to June 1st. The room is available until September 1st, but there is a possibility of extending for the rest of the school year.

If you or anyone you know is interested, please call me at 347-596-1708 or email me at nadia.chaudhury@gmail.com.

Thanks!

Your bike has been crushed into a cube. You have 30 minutes to move your cube. Feb. 25th, 2009 @ 09:59 pm

Bikers beware: today signs went up on the W20 bike racks, warning that all bikes will be removed on Friday 2/27 for the installation of new racks.

It would have been nice if they gave more than 2 days notice.

Hi, Could someone remind me- do we get into the Museum of Science for free?

Any other discounts that I should know about (but may have forgotten)?

Josten's Brass Rats Feb. 11th, 2009 @ 09:46 pm

Has anyone had any experience buying a replacement class of 2004 rat/any rat from Josten's? My initial attempts have been... frustrating.

Thanks!

Eight applicants to the Class of 2013 made this elaborate parody version of the MIT Admissions website, which seems very nice and all, until you realize that they even had Randall Munroe make an XKCD comic for it, and then it's just amazing. :)

Just had to spread this around...

» Did I just dream a hack?
Apparently I did.

This morning, I dreamed of a large-scale hack which resulted in little balls hanging from various high ceilings and lying atop glass ceilings. With, simultaneously, sculptures/pictures of cats showing up all over campus. (Such as a plaque of a cat painted to look like a cow lying on a green outside Stata, and another cat plaque at the top of the eastern wall of the Alumni Pool.)

(There was also a plaque/sign of a puppy on a picture at the edge of the new bio building's construction site.)

I also dreamed that I ran into [info]jessiehl in the midst of Mystery Hunt...and that I'd totally forgotten its timing myself, being already so far removed from the Institvte! (Then I woke up and realized that it was only late December...)

Finally, I dreamed that the tunnel system was this complex maze of passages (that did not look all alike, haha), and even had a "tunnel authority" that had underground offices, and a gigantic Athena cluster. (It was in said cluster that I ran into [info]jessiehl, who was working on a puzzle involving calculus.)

(Strangely, the tunnel authority offices were one of the few things that show up in my dreams as something that I'm NOT familiar with. Usually, no matter how strange the environment in my dream, I'm familiar with it. But I guess I am curious what's behind the Staff Only door...)

On a more practical note, does anyone know what I should do with a Wellesley Senate Bus pass that's got only 1 hole punched (because the return trip driver refused to punch another hole), and which I have pretty much no use for (since Ginger, Athena, and I all have left the area)?
» Message to the person who just spammed me with 15 MB of stuff.
Note: I know that that person is probably not in this community. I just wanted to share some ranting with y'all about attachment spamming. Maybe y'all can comment on what I should have said differently, or how we might stop people from attachment spamming big crap at large numbers of unsuspecting recipients.

I just received FIFTEEN MEGABYTES worth of stuff from you. Sure, I am on bc-talk, next-forum, and traders@mit. But even if I was on just one of those, I would have received a total of FIVE MEGABYTES of stuff, via e-mail. This not only clogs up my inbox space, but also greatly lengthens the time it takes Thunderbird to receive stuff off of MIT's IMAP mail server.

Not to mention that both of those attachment are VERY heavy on graphics, and have comparatively quite little useful information (which wasn't already covered in your e-mails).

What you shold have done was:
(1) NOT e-mail anything about 1 MB or larger to a dorm talk list. The text of your e-mails was sufficient to announce the event. If you feel the need to spam flyers, print them out at your printer and put them up around campus. Do NOT send them via e-mail--especially if their size is fattened with loads of detailed graphics.
(2) Send one e-mail to all the dorm talk lists. (I don't mind the separate e-mail to traders@mit, because that's kinda a different level of organization.) If you're afraid of flamewars due to spamming all the dorm talk lists, use "BCC", or "blank carbon copy", so people can't tell what you sent to (nope, you don't actually need to tell people). The MIT mail system sorts out who's concurrently on multiple lists that are receiving the same instance of the same e-mail, and only sends them that that e-mail once (unless they're being sent several instances of the same e-mail).

While I am outraged, I simply hope that this informative e-mail helps you avoid repeating these same mistakes (which, based on my experience, carry with them the penalty of possible sparking of flamewar).

PS: These very nice-looking but rather-insubstantial flyers are further driving down my opinion of the financial industry. Please tell that to JP Morgan. (Not to mention the market meltdown that's currently happening, where the industry's clamor against government regulation on good days but begging for help on bad days just REEKS of irresponsibility on the order of magnitude of not catching bin Laden before even touching Iraq.)
» Spring Statistics Course
So I'm a rising senior in course 7 and I really want to take a good statistics course before I graduate mainly b/c I am going into research and having some background in statistics will be quite useful.  I've heard that 18.05 is a good course for people who don't have a particularly strong math background.   I've never taken statistics before (not even in high school.)  Unfortunately, I don't think I have any room in my schedule this term but was wondering if people could recommend some good stat classes in the spring.  I've heard mixed reviews about the course 9 stat classes.
» HASS classes
So I've got one HASS-D left, and the time has come for me to finish it. Do any of you have opinions on/experiences with these classes:

21M.030 Introduction to World Music (P. Tang) -- specifically, how onerous was the fact that you have to go and see performances? How hard would it be for a non-music person?
21M.065 Introduction to Musical Composition (E. Ziporyn) -- how much would a beginner get out of this class (ie, was it generally good/fun)?
21H.001 How to Stage a Revolution (W. Broadhead, J. Ravel, E. Wood).
STS.002 Toward the Scientific Revolution (R. Eason)
STS.005 Disease and Society in America (Staff)

I have categories 1, 3, and 5 left, and these classes seemed the most interesting to me. But I'm more interested in taking a class that I will enjoy than one that has material that I think I'll like; other suggestions from these categories are welcome!
» 21W.732 and 4.341?
I need to take 2 more HASS electives, and I'm considering 21W.732 (Intro to Science and Technical Communication) and 4.341 (Intro to Photography). For those who have taken either of the classes: did you find them interesting? How was the workload? Did you learn as much from it as you had hoped?

Thanks in advance for the input!
» Plane tickets
"Most people buy their plane tickets for December a year ahead of time. It's already July and you're late. Every day of delay is costing me money."

Is this true? Forgive my airline naivete. (I'm not questioning that plane tickets are way cheaper if you book in advance; I'm wondering whether people actually do buy their holiday-season plane tickets six months to a year in advance.)
» MAS / FMAS
Did any of you guys ever do the FMAS learning community as freshmen? I looked into it and decided it looks pretty BA, but you never know. So, if any of you guys did it, what'd you think? Or for anyone that's really involved at all with the Media Lab, have you had mostly good experiences with it?
» food trucks
Hey all,

Where did the food trucks go? I hear they scattered. I'm particularly interested in the Goosebeary's food truck and the Chinese food truck that used to be at 77 Mass Ave.

Thanks!
