    Unsafe at any Speed
my friend John just sent me a link to this article:

Oscar Mayer Wienermobile crashes into Wis. home

I once knocked myself nearly unconscious in the Weinermobile. (That ceiling is lower than you would expect!) And, I seem to recall it once chased [info]leemoyer up the NJ Turnpike?

It's obviously a menace, even though it no longer emits the smell of hot dogs while driving.

Great. My porn muse is broken. I can't write porn anymore - at least not today.

I've totally stalled out on the comment fic for that meme - I wrote all kinds of foreplay and smart-assed banter, but I can't actually write the porn.

    I FAIL.

    Maybe tomorrow...

I need someone to take me up on one of my threads over at the [info]samdean_otp comment meme over on livejournal...

    One involves baking and sex

and the other involves stoned sex in the backseat of the Impala.

    Someone write these, please!

is onstage proposal better or worse than bj?
I just realized that I had an annoyed post as my most recent entry, which will not do, BECAUSE LOVE TOPS EVERYTHING.

HAVE AN ADAM GOING DOWN ON KRIS IN THE STAPLES CENTER.

OKAY NOT REALLY. Though that photo is gorgeous and totally needs a caption.

Adam, ILU for putting that smile on Kris' face. For those who don't know, Kris' grandmother recently passed away, and I'm sure it's been a hard week for him.

Vid from which the above pic came, and also my favorite of the Staples Center vids so far )

I've also broken my no-RPS writing rule. Contributed a small Kradam ficlet as a sign of appreciation (for those interested, it's over HERE).

But don't worry, I'm actually working on Torchwood fic right now. It's getting kind of long, so I've recruited [info]mclachlan to hold my hand and/or kick my behind until I finish it.

Torchwood poll - results and analysis
I've spent this evening having a look at the results of the "Children of Earth" poll and doing a bit of analysis. There were 40 respondents in total, 38 of whom had seen "Children of Earth" (including me). Obviously that's too small a number to draw general conclusions from, but some interesting trends are thrown up.

A bit of stat-bashing below the cut, with spoilers )

Thanks to all who responded. I thought it was interesting, even though the numbers are a bit small to draw any real conclusions!

A benefit of being out of work
Generally I'm not one for being really geeky about my fandoms in Real Life - a few exceptional occasions spring to mind, mostly connected with LOTR - but sometimes being in the right place at the right time is too good an excuse to waste. So, as I had nothing better to do and had some shopping to do on Oxford Street, off I toddled bright and early this morning to HMV to get a wristband so I could get a signed Torchwood DVD. The three main stars apparently had an engagement in Cardiff (as I write) so were limited in London, meaning only 250 people were going to get wristbands. However, there wasn't really a queue when I arrived just before opening time, and I picked up my band and my copy of CoE easily enough.

There were big queues when I got back, possibly a bit late - the signing was to begin at 12.30pm and I rocked up at 12.20pm and found myself at the back of one of the three lines set up between CD racks. I was a bit worried they'd assign each line one person, but they didn't do that; in the end they did one line at a time. Guess whose was last? As I'd arrived late anyway it wasn't too much of an issue, but I bet the people at the front of my line who'd got there early were hopping mad. Points off, HMV!

When the cast arrived there were cheers and a few shouts of Spoilers!! Spoilers!!! ), and a short period for the press photographers to do their thing. Style notes: Gareth David-Lloyd has grown a moustache and a little beard. I'm not convinced. Eve Myles has cut her hair and now looks definitely pregnant. And annoyingly pretty. John Barrowman looks very tanned.

They pushed everyone through pretty quickly, but I was able to thank them and say that I thought CoE was extraordinary (which I do). The girls in front of me told me in the queue that they have a habit of asking celebrities what they smell like (Simon Pegg said "babies", Nathan Fillion "vanilla and Canadian bacon"). I can report that John Barrowman said "sweet chilli dipping sauce", GDL "fish and chips" and Eve Myles "pregnancy". :) The much-younger teenagers behind me were all giggly about the prospect of seeing their heroes in the flesh. They were impressively geeky for four teenage girls, actually, identifying a number of points from the Declassified showing on the big screen while we were waiting and, when discussing whether to wash hands afterwards if they got to shake hands with John Barrowman, picked up on my interjection that they'd need a jar to keep the hand in.

Anyway, I was glad I went, I think.

    I've decided that...
... New England has a similar, but almost inverse weather pattern to the Pacific Northwest.

In the PNW, you've got about 7 to 8 months of grey, cool, rainy weather from late October to mid June, and then 4 months of perfection - sun, warmth, and minimal (30-40%) humidity. In New England you get 9 months of less than great weather from late November to mid September (freezing Winter, wet, soggy Spring, muggy, warm Summer) then a glorious Fall with brisk temps, clear skies and beautiful colors.

No offense to the New Englanders on my list, but I prefer the Pacific Northwest weather. I can deal with wet when it's not paired with heat, thanks. This 90 degrees and 80% humidity shenanigans SUCKS.

Yes, I know it's worse in other parts of the country, and you folks have my sympathies, you really do.

As soon as I can afford it, I'm buying an air conditioner. *drips sweat*

EDIT: To the daft weather-check on NECN: Oh no, sweetheart, some of us are definitely complaining.

    * Post 10 pictures you currently have on your hard drive that you think are self-expressive.
    * NO CAPTIONS! It must be like we're speaking with images and we have to interpret your visual language just like we have to interpret your words.
    * They must ALREADY be on your hard drive - no googling or flickr!
    * You do NOT have to answer any questions about any of your pictures if you don't want to. You can make them as mysterious as you like. Or you can explain them away as much as you like.

(About half of these were cut down from the 1680/1050 size of my desktops, in case you might want bigger. I have about 4500 pictures rotating in my desktop folder at present, set to change every 5 minutes. I love my mac.)

Many thanks also to [info]serai1, [info]theaeblackthorn, [info]multiclassgeek, Cosmicrohanprincess and the attendees of the live quizzes at the Buffy and SFX meets for providing Guest Quizzes or parts of quizzes :)

    Full rundown of results )

    Previous years' results: 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008.

If you have any suggestions for themes for next year (starting up again on 31 July as I'm taking a break next week) please post them below. I'd also welcome your thoughts about whether I should do regular screened quzzes - e.g. once a month. People ask for them a lot but, with the exception of last weeks', fewer seem to participate .

all we wanna do is eat your brains

Day One of hamster-sitting: Hamster is still alive! Nobody got peed on! Hamster's single escape attempt was foiled my my catlike reflexes.*

I am watching my friend's hamster while he is off at Otakon. I...have never had a pet larger than a fish in my life, so I don't know why he decided to trust me with Coraline. But she's adorable, and like I said, she did not pee on me.

In other news, I saw Harry Potter 6. I loved it--it's weird, almost everybody is either totally gleeful or totally irritated. I am solidly on the gleeful side, although OMGWTF INFERI DO NOT WANT.

*By which I do not mean the reflexes to nom on small animals.

    Branagh is at it again...
I was all set to read Jonson's masques and made the mistake to turn on the TV while I had some coffee. Henry V is on IndiePlex - This is, hands down, my favorite Branagh movie. He's so good as Henry, and Dame Judi Dench as Mistress Quickly? Genius. Derek Jacoby as the Chorus is fabulous, as is Ian Holm as Fluellen. And of course, Robbie Coltrane as Falstaff. Falstaff's death scene is so touching, then Henry's conquest of France - Henry is so... guh. Man, I love this movie, seriously.

I think it's a conspiracy. Jonson is not pleased.

Boy, is that the wrong question to ask me.

I don't believe you should ever outgrow what you love.

And I *especially* believe you should never be forced or coerced or teased into giving up or being embarrassed about what you love.

I have another *found stuff* link to share because I don't want to fall back into the habit of not posting. (What I really want is to hit my stride again, and post what I want without worrying about it. I miss that. I am happy to be posting at all though - and happier than I can say to be writing again, even a little.) I haven't even been playing in my graphics games much - it leaves me too much free brain. Thank god for The Sims.

I think the personal stuff will come back once we're settled on the other side of this situation. I have high hopes that everything is going to work out well, but I am so unsettled by the changes, and that's never been what I like to share here. I get too cranky, too crazy, too boring...)

So far - our doctor couldn't figure out what is causing Jim's "barometer dizziness", and sent him to a specialist. The verdict is it's probably a viral infection or a mild case of Ménières. He has an appointment next week so they can check him for hearing loss. (Yes, this is a good answer to me - as Jim told Jory (our doctor), "You know how Tay is - she's afraid I have a brain tumor." Jory, deadpan, replied, "Yes, she's very creative." Jory actually works out of the Princeton hospital and his students do call him House.)

Next week is Jim's last week of work. Since they didn't extend his contract, I convinced him to take the last week off with some of the numerous vacation days he accumulated by never taking them because someone always needs him.

Now that we are down to the wire, he has been called in twice to handle the server room *shutting itself down* - once on the Sunday of the Holiday weekend, and then again last week at 5am. (Of course, they have no way of knowing that I am often still awake then, and if I hadn't been, Jim, who was laying on his good ear, would have slept through the call. When I realized that he was getting dressed, I thought - why did I tell him the phone was ringing?) I fully expect them to continue to call after his termination date, just because they are used to calling him for emergencies, and there won't really be anyone else to call - Ah, but if they do, it will no longer be a work call, and they will get to talk to *me* at 5 am! I hope they are prepared to pay contractor fees.

I just hope they don't call during the actual *vacation* days, because "Frederic" will feel obligated to respond.

Anyway - as I am out looking for birthday presents for Jim, here are 2 things at Think Geek that amused me

    Photoshop Magnet Kit

So you can make your refrigerator look like you are photoshopping your family. Or turning your favorite actors into slash pics....

You know, I can hardly look at this picture without the urge to rearrange the work area.

Pantone Espresso Cup and Saucer Set

For those of us who know *precisely* how we like our coffee, now you can have the color and Pantone number right on the cup so your spouse will know if it's perfect before they bring it to you in bed.

Jim often brings me my beverage of choice in bed, so you can all be impressed by that. (But, you don't have to be too impressed, since my breakfast/beverage of choice is a prepackaged boxed protein shake.)

    LotR Fic: Destiny (1/3)
A/N: This is finally the finished version of what was formerly known as WIP number #5. It is mainly due to my beta’s patience with fretting authors that this story is posted now and not in a few years from now. ;-) Those of you who have been reading my LJ for a while will likely realize at some point that this story was inspired by real life events. It wasn’t easy to write, but I just had to do it. Before I give away anything I’ll just shut up now and allow you to read in peace.

Feedback would be appreciated and very welcome. :)

Dedication: In loving memory of someone whose story did not have a happy ending, but who has shown me what true friendship can mean.

    Title: Destiny
    Author: Silivren Tinu
    Beta: the wonderful Imbecamiel (((hugs)))
Genre: Drama, angst, friendship, h/c. Gen.
    Rating: T
Summary: When a cruel stroke of fate threatens to destroy all Legolas has worked and hoped for in his life, Aragorn has to find a way to offer comfort and hope in a situation that may turn out to be more difficult than any they have faced before. Characters: Aragorn, Legolas, Nestadren, with a short appearance from Thranduil.
Disclaimer: I own Nestadren, Bregir, the King’s House, and the Queen’s Garden (I have chosen the last two as my new residence – be warned that everyone who decides to trespass risks being attacked by fuzzy black squirrels and rabid plot bunnies :D). All other characters and places in this story belong to J.R.R.Tolkien.

    Chapter One: Bad News

    ------------------

“A good friend remembers what we were
and sees what we can be.”

    (Unknown)

When Aragorn reined in his horse in front of the stables, he immediately spotted the elf who was already waiting for him a short distance away, leaning against the trunk of a majestic beech tree. Seeing the silver-haired healer standing there instead of Legolas made Aragorn feel even more worried than he already was – in all the years since he had befriended the elven prince, it had never been a good sign when he was greeted by Nestadren instead of his friend.
