Danny groaned when he saw the sign on the elevator. It just figured that his own elevator would let him down on his own birthday. Everything else had gone wrong.
He’d been stuck at work hours after he should have been at home in bed with Montana because of a stupid hang up with some paperwork. Lindsay had been working a different case, he’d barely seen her all day.
He trudged up the steps and shoved his key into the lock. He pushed open the door slowly, blinking as his eyes adjusted to the semidarkness. All the lights were off, and there were candles covering all the tables.
“Montana?” he asked softly, carefully taking off his shoes. “Hey, Lindsay, you here? Cause if you’re not this has got to be some kind of fire hazard.”
He found her in the bedroom, which was also lit with candles, stretched out on the bed in a black lacy negligee.
“Wow,” he said softly.
She smiled at him. “Happy birthday. Like your present?”
“I think,” he murmured, climbing into bed with her and kissing her passionately, “that it might just be the best present I’ve ever gotten.”
