Computer Woes...

I'm asking this partially to save my own sanity, and also to get my sore excuse for a father off my back.

The desktop in my house isn't cooperating, as per usual. I don't know what goes on with the computer because I never use it. I can tell you my dad was zero limitations with what he does, using backdoor websites to get into Yahoo Games lounges, and he frequents sites that are notorious for spyware, etc. He has no concept of what it means to do anything legitimately. I make him use Firefox, but he still screws that up. We recently had AT&T installed, and they just HAD to use IE to set up... We had pop-ups ALL OVER the screen. I try to run Ad Aware when I can, but that's not very often.

After about 2-3 minutes of startup, the monitor flickers off and back on, and everything is frozen. I can't start up in Safe Mode, and when I start up under "Last Good Settings" I can't stay on long enough to figure out what's wrong. That in mind, I can't get to the control panel, Lavasoft, or Webroot.

I'm not fantastic with computers, but I know enough to get by. I keep my own computer in working condition and free of spyware, etc. Because of that, I'm apparently ridiculously smart and can fix anything. I don't know what the problem here is, my only speculation is that we have virii and spyware beyond measure, and that's what's going on. I feel like the machine is beyond saving.

The advice I give is to stay away from EVERYTHING he visits, except the ACTUAL Yahoo homepage, and he can't even do that, because he is a moron.

Any thoughts on this would be great, because I have no idea.

Thanks.

To quell some of my anxiety about recent instability in my industry, I decided to expand upon a job board link list that I’d created for someone a few months ago. I'm not on the job hunt just yet, but it would be good to have available should I need it. After I had it all pulled together and revised last evening, I decided to post it publicly in my journal as a resource.

http://moiracoon.livejournal.com/444360.html

Feel free to link to/share the post. I figured that all of the energy that I channeled into this coping skill project could benefit others too! *laughs* If it helps someone connect with an employment opportunity that they wouldn’t have encountered otherwise, that’s terrific!

Anime Milwaukee

We're back!

New name, more staff, website...this year is shaping up to be even better than last year.
Be sure to clear your calendars for Feb 29 - Mar 2 2008

http://www.animemilwaukee.com/

World Cinema
February 29-March 3

Double-Bind: Three Films by Satoshi Kon

Satoshi Kon is at the forefront of a new and energetic movement in Japanese animation, one which portrays the complexity of our contemporary world with adult clarity through the pictorially fantastical and convoluted medium of animé. Beginning with his debut feature Perfect Blue (1998,) Kon has developed a body of work that explores the dissonance between dreams and reality as well as highlighting the impact technology has had upon our collective imagination. His most recent film Paprika "buzzes with a sense of unease about the rapidly changing relationship between our physical selves and our machines"(Manohla Dargis - NY Times).

Friday, February 29 – 7 pm
Saturday, March 1- 5, 9 pm
Sunday, March 2 – 7 pm

Paprika
Paprika is set in the near future where a female psychotherapist, Dr.Chiba, is employing a new prototype device that allows doctors to enter their patients' subconscious minds and record their dreams from the inside. When the device is stolen, Dr.Chiba enlists her "dream detective" alter-ego Paprika to solve the crime.

(Satoshi Kon, Japan, in Japanese w/ English st., 90 min, 35mm, 2007)

Friday, February 29 – 9 pm
Saturday, March 1- 3 pm
Sunday, March 2 – 5 pm

Millennium Actress (Sennen Joy )
In this unique epic adventure, the lines between the past and the present, and truth and fiction, are blurred when a documentary filmmaker fulfills his quest to find the legendary actress Chiyoko Fujiwara and learn why she mysteriously vanished at the height of her brilliant career. When Chiyoko grants the filmmaker’s request for an interview, he, in turn, presents her with a token—a key she had lost and thought was gone forever. The filmmaker could not have imagined that the key would not only unlock the long-held secrets of Chiyoko’s life but also his own.

(Satoshi Kon, Japan, in Japanese w/ English st., 87 min, 35mm, 2002)

Saturday, March 1- 7pm
Sunday, March 2 – 3 pm
Monday, March 3- 7pm

Tokyo Godfathers
In modern-day Tokyo, three homeless people's lives are changed forever when they discover a baby girl at a garbage dump on Christmas Eve. As the New Year fast approaches, these three forgotten members of society band together to solve the mystery of the abandoned child and the fate of her parents. Along the way, encounters with seemingly unrelated events and people force them to confront their own haunted pasts as they learn to face their future together.

(Satoshi Kon, Japan, in Japanese w/ English st., 92 min, 35mm, 2004

http://www.aux.uwm.edu/Union/events/theatre/calendar/SPRING%2008/spring_08.htm#february

Apparently there is a place in Grafton where people take their old computers and parts to dispose of them. And anyone can go there and take whatever they want for free.

Its apparently "somewhere near the swimming pool."

I'm trying to follow up on this, but if anyone knows what I'm talking about, please comment with the location.

My fantastically awesome lab has grown by a few routers and Sun Ultra boxes, but I lost some of the linux boxes.... like... I had to send my mom a computer... before my dad killed her for click-fucking his computer to death on the internet.

In fact, I have a funny e-mail from my mom to share with all of you, behind the cut.

Hope everyone is doing good in the snow.
