Poopin' peeds [25 Mar 2008|06:29pm]

So... Who else gets the 'lovely' wet sound and the bomb bay doors opening whenever they pick up their 'peeds? No matter what, wether it's picking them up or just bumping the tank they making a wet spittle sound and poop quite a bit. makes it not so much fun to hold them. It's only the african giants that do this to us. Any tips aside from a millipede diaper? ;p

Introducing . . . Guinevere! [25 Mar 2008|02:46am]

Hello! I was so pleased to find this community. :) Millipedes are very underappreciated, especially by people like my grandmother (who nearly faints dead away whenever she sees them), so it's nice to find other weirdos who keep giant bugs as pets. :D

I first got interested in millipedes during a science research course in high school. I wanted to do a behavioral study and for some reason I can't recall, the professor wouldn't let me study tree frogs. So I decided millipedes were the next best option, and I was hooked.

Unfortunately the millipedes stayed at the school after the project was over, but I got a millipede craving in college and found two of them at the local pet store. I named them Pyramus and Thisby, and they made for great conversational pieces when we had parties.

Unfortunately, Pyramus died a month ago, and I wanted to get another millipede to keep Thisby company. I made a few phone calls, and then a few more, and determined that there were no millipedes anywhere within fifty miles. *sigh* But I kept trying, and today I found a store that had a single 'pede in stock.

New here and to Millipedes. I have a question :) [12 Feb 2008|03:14pm]

I'm new to 'peeds and this community, Saturday, at a reptile expo, my husband picked up some Chocolate Millipedes. While I've got a ton of pet roaches (hissers and discoids) I've never had millipedes before. Given they're illegal in Michigan, I was surprised we found them (out of state dealer). The larger one tunneled under the eco earth immediately and after warming up in my hand and chewing on me and than some food, the smaller one (Nipper) went under too. I read this kind don't tunnel much, so I assume they're de-stressing or molting. I want to know how long is a good time to wait before digging for them. I don't want to stress them out but also don't want them to die and smell. I wait over 3 months with my hermit crabs, but not sure about millipedes.

Strange white spots [31 Jan 2008|10:06am]

Hello! I am new to this community, but have owned a trio of African black millipedes for almost a year now! They live quite comfortably in a big tub of Eco-Earth and old vegetable matter, and happily munch on any fruit or veggies I toss in.

I recently noticed some strange white dots on the back of my largest millipede, Nausicaa, who had just finished a molt. They are at the very top of her back, and only up close to her head. They are only on the exoskeleton, not on the membrane in between, and they did not rub off upon gentle pressure.

Is this some sort of millipede fungal infection? Could it be something due to an improper molt? I tried looking up millipede diseases and found very little. Other than that she seems quite healthy, and the other two don't have them.

I have included a picture for reference (picture behind cut).

I also have a bit of a fruit fly infestation in their home. The flies don't seem to bother them, but they annoy me, especially in summer when they really multiply. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get rid of the fruit flies without harming the millipedes?

Question... [05 Jan 2008|06:03pm]

I've had my Black African Millipede for nearly 2 years; I got him at around 10 inches, and he's grown to about 12 now... and he's currently laying on his side, not eating, barely moving his legs.

I know he's dying... is there anything I can do? I love the little guy and I don't know what I can do to help/make him more comfortable/etc.

heater? [02 Jan 2008|06:29pm]

i recently came into possession of two beautiful African Giants!
within a day they were mating and crawling around and being happy.
but i've since moved them away from the house's furnace (we have a neato heat source to the house, where it's like a furnace with one giant open vent in between the dining room and the living room), with thoughts that the undertank heater i got for them would be proficient. . it's a 'heatwave desert small', and i thought maybe that'd be too hot, if anything (desert=hot??).. .

but they're slow and tend to keep to the hidingspots now, and i'm not sure if they're just settled in or if they're cold. . .i felt the inside of the tank where the heater is placed (i have it on the side, not under), and it barely seems to be warm at all!!

is this normal or is it defective. . . what. . . do i do?

Is he sick? [14 Dec 2007|02:25pm]

I have a male millipede that appears to have grown a couple of milky colored sacs on his 7th segment.  At first I thought he was "in heat" or something like that...but he has had them now for a couple months!!  Has anyone heard of this?  I can't find any documentation on anything like this.

Thanks!

New owner. [23 Sep 2007|12:52am]

I recently adopted two African Giants, and I'm looking for a bit of information.

I bought some calcium powder (from the pet store) and have sprinkled a bit of that on their fruits and vegetables. Is this the preferred method? Or is there a better way to provide this for them? If you use the powder, how often and how much do you use?

My Millipedes seem to love romaine lettuce, as well as cucumbers and apples. They seemed to enjoy the mango I provided this evening, as well. Are there any other foods you suggest?

How often do you change the substrate in their home? Is there anything special you provide for them as part of their habitat?

I don't mean to sound uneducated on this subject, because I did take time to learn about Millipedes before I bought them. However, as with any subject, it seems that on the internet you find one webpage that swears you should do X Y or Z and another webpage that swears against it! So, my goal is just to find some tips from those who are experienced in their care. Any advice you have to share would be quite welcome, thank you!

Hello :)

I am a first-time millipede owner, though long-time 'pede lover... with some questions.

How can you tell if your millipede is of the exotic variety rather than common? I got mine from a pet store, he is a little over 8 inches long, if that helps.

Also, I've heard that giant millipedes can dream... is this true? I've yet to see him 'twitch' in his sleep, but a fellow millipede lover said they'd seen it and read about it.

Also-also, I've only had him a few weeks, so I just cleaned his tank today, and I noticed something odd... incredibly tiny, almost microscopic little white worm-things wiggling around by the hundreds o.o it severely creeped me out. Is this normal? What are they? Would the compressed coconut fiber be causing this at all? I also use Cypress Mulch on the other side of the tank and haven't noticed them in it. Whatever they are, they don't seem to be on the millipede at all, just at the top surface of the substrate...

Oh, one more thing. Is it normal for a millipede to give 'hickeys'? When I first got him out and handled him, my hands were clean and he was very calm, but randomly started sort-of chewing my arm. It didn't hurt, but it did leave a reddish bump afterwards. o.O Just curious exactly what he's doing, since I have always heard they're not capable of biting.

Sorry if I seem ignorant. I've read up on giant millipedes for years yet there are still some questions I've yet to find a definite answer to. Thanks so much for any help!

Hey guys, hope this community is still alive. I went to a pet store today to check out millipedes. They had a few giant Africans and a smaller species. As I get the heeby jeebies from anything mildly big with more legs than me, I am going to get a couple of the smaller species.
So, I plan on buying two or three of these smaller guys (one or two being a girl). I also thought about adding some more detrivores that I can dig up; roly polies or maybe I could dig out a worm from my compost pile.
Has anyone here done something like that?

Millipede questions! [15 Dec 2006|06:00am]

bellydancindan
Hey,
I have a chocolate millipede (I think!) who is quite young and I have a few questions:

I got her a few months ago, and I never see her. This is fine with me if she is just shy or antisocial or whatever. I just worry that she's not okay. Is it common for them to stay almost entirely underground? I can never tell if she has been eating, it always just gets so gross and moldy that it is impossible to tell. The only way I've been able to know for sure is that she is still alive so she's gotta be eating! I usually feed her cucumber or mango. occasionally I throw lettuce in.

Lots of little fruit flies seem to like hanging out in her cage, are they harmful at all?

Also, what temps should she be kept at? I try for about 70-75 (it can get pretty cold where I live). Any help would be appreciated. I worry about her.

I've been using millipedes, centipedes, and other invertebrates quite frequently in my artwork, lately. Be warned; some of them do contain artistic nudity, but I tried to keep it as tasteful as possible. If it offends, I'm sorry. There is also a bit of blood in one; I wouldn't say they're for the squeamish.

EDIT: Nevermind. The millis are definitely dead. :L Their legs are stiff now, and their undersides are starting to grow mold. I will ceremoniously throw them into the river as their funeral tomorrow.
