Location Announcement and Dates Poll ; recruitment drive
Firstly, because we know you've all been waiting for this: Millicon in 2008 will be held in Washington DC once more. It will also be held in July of 2008 - and this is where you come in. Please choose from one of the following options to specify which weekend would be better for you, the prospective attendee:

Secondly, we're looking to try to find a third organizer. If you might be interested in helping make the con happen and want to know what's involved - or even just want to offer your help as an assistant but not an organizer, please email us at avarielwings at gmail dot com and starexcess at gmail dot com . Thanks! :D

Thirdly and lastly, but not least importantly, we're in need of a some sort of subtitle for this one, so we can differentiate it from the others when we're working out the planning with various contacts/hotel lodging/etc. We've got our minds stuffed full of planing, and that leaves nary a place for a name or two - might you be able to christen our little con with a suffix to its name? Drop it in a comment if you think you've got it, and we'll love you forever. The format is as follows: Millicon 3.0: ...

This poll will be open until February 1, at which point it will close and we will move to the next steps of the organization process. Please make sure to vote by then if you're planning to attend - although there will be many reminders to make sure you don't forget! *g*

So! Kate and I, Mandy, will now be running the next Millicon. We know that it will be in July of 2008 (weekend to be determined), but we don't know much else. To know other things, we first need to know what location the con is taking place in.

To help us decide on a location, we are going to run a series of polls to find out what is the best area for the most muns to access. This is the first poll. If you even just have an urge to go to millicon, but you're not sure if you'll be able to make it? Fill out the poll anyway. The more answers we get, the better a place we'll be able to pick out. :)

    About Millicon
    Hey guys,

It was announced a while ago that I would be staying on as a co-organiser of Millicon '08 with anyone who volunteered, but unfortunately that's going to have to change, as I have far too much on my plate with my PhD Thesis and other pressures to even think about organising another large scale con.

What this means is that none of the people who have previously organised the cons will be organising one this year, and the occurrence of a Millicon in 2008 will depend on someone else stepping up and volunteering to organise it.

All for of us: Feather, Aspen, Vivien and I are willing to offer advice and support, and we know of one or two people also willing to offer in a support role, so if any of you are thinking "I could organise a con" and have read Feather's guide to Millicon, please let us know and we'll be more than happy to help you out.

Any millimuns that are within a day-trip distance of Toronto, I have a question for you.

What are you doing tomorrow (the Civic Holiday Monday)?  And would that include a meeting in Hogtown with a couple other millimuns? :D

Kate ([info]avariel_wings) is in town for a con but has a fair bit of free time, and I was wondering if anyone wanted to get together somewhere in T.O.  At the very least someone has to show her the wonders of poutine, and it could just be a trip out for a long lunch or maybe seeing a couple sights (just keep me away from the yarn stores).  Decisions to be made when we actually know if anyone's coming.

Drop a note here and let me know if you can make it!

We had a great time putting this list together, and we hope you all enjoyed it!

    Millicon 2.0 (Chicago): Exit Poll
Now that everyone's returning home and settling back into normal routine post-con, I've got a question to ask of you all.

What did you think of your Millicon experience?

Seriously. What worked? What didn't work? Are there things you loved? Things you didn't like at all? Things you would have liked to see more or less of? Things that should never happen again or things that should be done every single time?

I'm asking the question here instead of looking for con reports in individual journals in order to solicit centralized, honest opinion, both the positive and the negative. We received a lot of good feedback last year, and it helped us to adjust the experience this year-- and now we'd like to know how it went.

All comments are screened for privacy purposes. Anonymous comments are enabled, and IP logging is off.

On behalf of your Millicon planning team, please let us know what you think. This is for future reference.

And thank you for your participation. :)

    MILLICON 2.0: Helpful Travel Guide
HI GUYS! I know, you are all TOTALLY excited at Millicon being a few days away. Since everyone is really excited now and searching for information, let us offer a few more details on things.

First, you should check out this wonderful city guide [info]newredshoes wrote for everyone. She has wonderful information on public transit, visitor rail passes (I will be buying one of those in the airport), different Chicago districts, places to eat, and sights to see.

Next, stuff we might be able to help you with BEFORE you leave for Chicago.

    REGISTRATION PACKET:

The registration packet, besides holding the Millicon 2.0 schedule and details, will contain gift goodies and every free map and brochure we could get from the Chicago tourism board.

The most important CTA brochures are:
    - TWO DIFFERENT bus and rail maps of Chicago
    - A sight seeing, tourist guide.
    - A tourist coupon book (we shall discover together what might be in it!)
    - A Navy Pier/Mag Mile sight seeing specific guide

You only have to worry about GETTING yourself to the hotel. Once there, you will have over three dozen fellow millimuns there to help puzzle out maps with you and another almost dozen Chicago natives there to smile as we ask silly questions. Together, we will conquer!!

TRAVEL (HOW DO I GET TO THE HOTEL WITHOUT DEATH?!):

First, check out the hotel website that gives loads of information on how to reach them.

Taxi ride from Midway Airport to hotel: $25
Taxi ride from O'Hare Airport to hotel: $45

Shuttle ride from Midway to hotel: $21
Shuttle ride from O'Hare to hotel: $21

    Metro/Train cost to hotel: $2.00

When you decide HOW you are getting from the airport to the hotel, ask yourself questions and decide what works best for you. I will be arriving in at O'Hare, and I know I will have more than one suitcase with me this year with all of my geeky fun stuff. One top of that, I like to break in every trip I go on by getting myself stuck in turnstiles at least once (you will have so much entertainment! Trust me!). So, I am going to be taking the shuttle because I can see myself causing an Incident on the EL when I can't get my wheeled bag and my butt up the stairs to the train platform and through the turnstile.

Which is another thing to remember! The Chicago metro is called the El because it is ELEVATED. You need to get your things up stairs, not below ground like many east coast metros. That sounds silly, but it is something to remember.

Remember to check out the travel info post to see if you can travel together with someone! I might save you cash!

    WHAT DO I BRING?!:

You should check out Debi's post here! People have made wonderful and extremely helpful suggestions all around, and it would help you loads.

I know this doesn't answer everyone's questions, but I hope it helps. If anyone has ANY more questions, please feel free to comment or drop us an email. If you have travel/transit questions, I really suggest you drop a comment and people that live in the city can answer you properly.

And if you are a Chicago native, please please, add your own thoughts to things! I have sent out emails the last few weeks, but several have bounced back. Please, add your thoughts to things. We really and truly appreciate your input into things.

Thank you for everyone's time and I hope that helps.

    SEE YOU SEE YOU SOON!

CORRECTING A CONFUSION ABOUT HP7 BOOK
    THIS IS AN FYI!

There seems to be massive confusion from people about HP. I am going to try and correct it.

WE HAVE NO HARRY POTTER RELATED EVENTS PLANNED UNTIL AFTER MIDNIGHT ON FRIDAY, JULY 20.

If you look at the schedule, here, you will see the only HP related thing is an Outside Event, where people might or might not start lining up at the Border's book store to pick up their book at 12AM. THERE ARE NO EVENTS PLANNED IN THE MEETING ROOM BEFORE THAN. If you look, you will see that we have several wacky games and hijinks planned during that time that are all panfandom.

If you are wanting to not be in the meeting room or even in the hotel when people return with their HP7 books, you might want to make sure your plans are more aimed for being gone AFTER 12AM, not closer to earlier in the evening and then RETURNING closer to midnight. May be this is the night you want to go with millimuns to the bar or out dancing.

This is not to say we are mandating people to be in the meeting room. No, no, not at all! There just seemed to be confusion where it was assumed the meeting room would be entirely HP7 filled from earlier in the evening until the next morning. I am simply trying to correct that so you all can better your own plans. If you don't want to be around when people bring back their books, aim to be gone AFTER 12AM.

Thank you guys for reading, and I am sorry there was some confusion. Please, if you have any questions, email us at millicon@gmail.com, or grab Debi, Aspen, or myself on instant message. Thank you.

    Millicon 2.0: Registration, Updated
As of today, everyone who has registered for Millicon should have received a confirmation email.

If you have already registered and for some reason did not receive a confirmation, please contact us at millicon@gmail.com as soon as possible.

Remember, registration is required! We will of course still be accepting registrations at the con itself, but if you register in advance it's a great deal easier for everyone. Thank you for your assistance!

The other thing that is required, unfortunately, is the dreaded con fee. As I've been getting some questions on this, let me address them one by one:

How much is the fee again?
US $50 for full access to every event during all three days of Millicon.

    When is the fee due?
You can pay the con fee at any time up to and including the moment that you show up at the con. However, at that point, we will need to receive the fee in order to give you a registration packet and badge.

What if I'm not coming to any of the scheduled events? Do I still have to pay?
The con fee is required in order to attend any and all activities that take place in the event room. Obviously, if you just plan to come to the hotel to hang out in your friends' rooms upstairs, or to meet a group for dinner, or things of that nature -- we're not going to ask you to pay a fee for that. The purpose of the fee in the first place is so that we can recoup the costs associated with the event room itself. However, if you plan to come to any of the scheduled activities in the event room, you must have (and show) a badge, and to receive a badge, you must pay the fee.

But what if I can only come for part of the time? Do I have to pay the full amount?
Due to the fact that there are quite a few who've asked about this, we've put our heads together and come up with another option, and that's this: if you are only coming to Millicon for one or two days, you may purchase a "Day Pass" badge for $20.

The "Day Pass" will be marked Thursday, Friday, or Saturday, and is $20 per day. Friday's pass will not get you into Saturday's events, sorry! We feel this is the best compromise we can make to allow those who are not planning to be around for everything to still participate, while still being fair to those who are paying for/attending the entire Millicon.

Hey, wait, you didn't mention the Day Pass before!
That's because we hadn't planned on offering one, until we kept getting questions about the possibility. It wasn't until then that we decided we needed to figure something out. If this concerns you enough that you'd like to discuss it more, please send email to millicon@gmail.com, and we'll get back to you as soon as we can.

That's it for now -- see you all next week! In the meantime, if you have questions, comments, or concerns, or need to make special arrangements of some sort, leave a comment here or email millicon@gmail.com.

    Thanks!

    LARP VOTING CATEGORIES
Everyone remembers the LARP from last year if they came to Millicon. Totally fun, right? We want to add to some of the fun since so many people go above and beyond in creating their LARP costumes.

We are going to even more awards than just for best costume! And that's where YOU come in.

These are the two categories we know we are going to use:
    Best Costume
    Most IC

We want everyone to comment and make suggestions for different categories they would like to be included in the award giving. :D? Come on! Speak up! Be wacky! We will pick out the best and the ones everyone seems to enjoy, and use them. We will take suggestions until the start of next week, the 16th.

    MILLICON 2.0: WHERE ARE YOU?
So, you are coming to Millicon! But you don't want to take the subway by yourself in a strange city, or you want to split a cab to the hotel with someone.

Here is where to do that! If you feel comfortable, share with the group some of your travel information.

I will be arriving on July 19th at 10:30 at ORD (O'Hare).

I will be leaving on July 22nd at 1:30PM at ORD (O'Hare).

If anyone wants to share a cab or catch the shuttle together, let me know! And especially if you want to run into each other on the 19th and grab breakfast together. I'll be famished!

For those that need the reminder, the hotel address is:

    The Silversmith Hotel
    10 South Wabash Avenue
    Chicago, IL 60603

Comment away, everyone! :D Remember, we will not be doing pick-ups this year, so you must fend for yourselves. If anyone would like directions for the L, please let me know, and I'll make sure to point your way someone that knows.

Real life stuff is changing my Millicon plans a little: my company is sending me to Ohio for some software training, and the only available dates, of course, are the 16th-19th of July. I'm trying to figure out how to get myself from Columbus to Chicago, and one option is: is there anybody in the general Columbus area who is planning to drive and wouldn't mind a passenger? Email me at minorblue@gmail.com or drop me a comment.

    Thanks much.

It has come to my attention that the financial strain of attending the millicon is going to be a bit too much. So I shall be missing it this year.

The reason I post this here is that I promised to pay 1/4 of a hotel room for the three days of the con. I still intend to do this. So, if the only reason you can't attend is the price of a hotel room, please e-mail me, and we will work things out. I would hate to have someone else miss the con when I can help, and, like I said, I'll be paying the money regardless.

My e-mail is in the user info for this journal. Hope you guys have fun!

    Millicon 2.0: Canonshare
    Hey folks.

You know, one of the best things about meeting up with a lot of like minded folks is the opportunity to wave a book / DVD box set in their face and say: "This is my canon! Read it! Watch it! Love it!" the way you do when you love a canon enough to want to role play a character from it.

To that end we'd encourage everyone to bring their canon along with them to share. We may not have time to show everything in the meeting room, but if you decide to watch a movie in your room, then we'll let people know so they can watch it too!

So if you're to bring a canon to Millicon, then I'd like to ask you to comment here with the following information:

    Name of canon:
Format: (TV, movie, comic, book: if it's on disc, include region of DVD or file format)
    Length in minutes:
    Characters in Milliways:

For example, I might show the following:

    Name of canon: Fray
    Format: graphic novel (paper)
    Length in minutes: N/A
Characters in Milliways: Melaka Fray, Harth Fray

    Or:

Name of canon: Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl
    Format: Region 2 DVD
    Length in minutes: 137min
Characters in Milliways: Jack Sparrow, Will Turner, Elizabeth Swann, James Norrington, Gibbs, Governor Swann

    Thanks again,

    IB
    xx
