About:This community is for spouses of military members of any branch. The maintainer is [info]perigune (me). All spouses (and soon-to-be spouses or significant others) and military members are welcome! If you have questions about the community, I'd rather you e-mail them to me (perigune at livejournal.com) than post a comment in my journal.

IMPORTANT: Unless specifically noted otherwise, when I use the term "spouse", it's a blanket term covering spouses/ex-spouses/fiancees/GFs/BFs/SOs/whatever you are. So if you're not married to your servicemember, please don't think I want you to join--in fact, you're very much welcome here! Because if you're not married, you don't get as much official support from the military as the married people do...and so you're going to need all the support you can get. Also, I do tend to slip into the habit of calling the spouse "she" and the servicemember "he". No sexism meant there: I just happen to be a "she". This community is open to men as well as women, so just switch/substitute gender pronouns as necessary.

Anyhow...

Please keep in mind that you must agree to the community guidelines before you join. The short and sweet version is below; the original long version is found here. Anyone who is found to be repeatedly violating these guidelines may be removed from the community. Warnings will be given before that happens, but please make it easy on me and thoroughly read and understand the guidelines before you join.

This community is for discussing the military and its lifestyle, especially how the military impacts those who aren't the active duty members, i.e., the spouses and families. Any post made here is to relate in some way to the military or being a military member/spouse/dependent/etc.

All posts to the community are moderated, which means that I approve them before they are posted. There may be a small delay in approving your post so please be patient--I usually try to keep the wait to less than 24 hours. Most posts will make it through, but please be aware that anything that is completely off-topic will be returned to you without being posted.

This is a family-oriented community, so only family-oriented user pictures allowed. That means no graphic sex or violence. If you have questions, please see the LiveJournal FAQ Questions on user picture content restrictions and standards of decency for more information. I reserve the right to delete posts with indecent user pictures; if I do so, you are free to repost it with a more appropriate user picture.

Guidelines for posting in Military Spouses...or anywhere online for that matter:

The most important thing that you must do as a member of this community is practice strict OPSEC (OPerational SECurity) procedures. Not sure what OPSEC is? Read An OPSEC Primer or www.ioss.gov. If you're still not sure whether or not you should post about something, err on the side of caution: don't. Or ask first: I will always be glad to answer your questions.

It is vital that you are circumspect online when referring to the security measures your particular installation has taken. Even something as simple as complaining about jersey barriers in front of the commissary could give the wrong people information we really don't want them to have. Some may feel that we are is being too paranoid about snippets of seemingly insignificant information, but if you look through history, many battles have been won and lost thanks to...snippets of seemingly insignificant information that fell in the right (or wrong) hands.

So if you want to post here, you'll play by OPSEC rules. What you do in your own journal is your own business.

The best gauge of whether to post something is this: just because your spouse tells you the information doesn't mean it's something they want everyone to know. So think to yourself before writing, "Would it upset or bother him/her if I posted this online?" If the honest answer is "Yes" then DON'T POST IT.

For YOUR OWN safety as well as that of your spouse, when your spouse is sent out for any length of time, do not post:

  • Where they will be and when they will be there

  • What their mailing address is

  • Who's going with them

  • Why they are getting sent there

  • What they have been doing there

  • That it's a "top secret" or "classified" mission (ESPECIALLY if your spouse tells you it's a "top secret" or "classified" mission)

  • And where YOU live, since it'll be very clear that you're alone right now


The rest of the guidelines, short and sweet:

The clearly obvious but (unfortunately) often forgotten: NEVER give out your/your family's social security numbers and other personal information while online. The military or other legitimate organizations will NEVER ask for SSNs or your other personal information via instant message or forum post (no matter what website you're on including CinCHouse), and rarely will they ask for it by e-mail. If you have the slightest doubt whether a request is legitimate, ask your Ombudsman or go to the base in person to provide it.

Be wary of those people who won't take "No" for an answer and keep pressing you for information. Be especially wary if they claim to be from an official organization, are posters on military forums and communities, or try to bait you with "I don't believe you, prove it!". You are NEVER obligated to tell anyone anything about yourself or your family.

If you or your family members are ever contacted by the media, the best way to handle it to refer them to your command's public affairs office. Do not give out any sensitive information or offer to correct/complete any news reports.

Never give out your spouse's mailing address. If friends/organizations/anyone wants to send something to your spouse, they should send it to you and you can forward it. And should you ever receive any suspicious items that you are requested to send to your spouse, you should contact the authorities immediately.

Advertising other military communities is welcome but in moderation. If I feel compelled to write you to say "you're advertising too much," you're advertising too much. Advertising other non-LJ communities is not allowed UNLESS you're responding to a member's question (example: if someone's getting stationed in Hampton Roads and wants info about the area--then it'd be OK to plug [info]hamptonroads in a reply)

By all means, use the Friends-Only lock if it makes you more comfortable...but don't get into a sense of false security with Friends-Only or "protected" posts. I do not prescreen members before they join, and so I can't verify that every single member here is a serviceman, spouse or other family member. Also, anyone who joins the community has immediate access to all of the community posts whether public or protected. So keep that in mind.

And last, use this community at your own risk. Neither I nor LiveJournal can be held responsible for anything that happens as a result of your membership in this community. So be smart and post smart--don't let something happen that could make you into the next topic of some Lifetime Movie Network sobfest.
