OPSEC REMINDER
Hey guys,

We've had quite a bit of OPSEC violation on the community recently. Just a reminder that you just can't post dates, times, travels, discuss particulars about weapons, locations, etc. here. There ARE people out there who join communities like this to gather information. Don't kid yourself.

Will it get someone killed? You don't know. The safest bet is just don't do it. If you're not sure if you should say it, err on the side of caution and just don't say it.

So here's a basic list of what not to say or do:

DON'T post specific dates your SO goes on deployment, leaves for R&R, redeploys, PCS's, or moves from one place to the next.

DON'T post specifics discussing weaponology, though that has not been an issue here, I'm just saying.

DON'T post where your husband is stationed if he is in a combat zone (i.e. what base he's at in Iraq or Afghanistan).

DON'T post the times your husband will be in transit from base to base in a combat zone, or travel times, period.

DO black out or otherwise blur nameplace, unit and branch patches if posting pictures.

Those are the main infarctions.

FROM HERE ON OUT I WILL DELETE WITHOUT WARNING ANY POST THAT VIOLATES OPSEC TERMS.

I'm tired of reminding people. Call me bitchy, I don't care. Read and follow the rules.

Thanks much!

If you have comments feel free to post them... if you have additional OPSEC violations you'd like to add to the list add them. I'll post this to the memories and link it in the community userinfo page, also.

Yes thank you. Living away from base I never heard of OPSEC until I joined this group. And not too long ago the Ombudsmans for my husbands ship sent out a reminder about it, thought I'd pass it along, it was the thing that made it click for me.

Operational Security (OPSEC)
OPSEC is based on the idea that the accumulation of many sensitive or unclassified pieces of information could compromise security by revealing classified information. Thus, OPSEC is an analytic process used to deny adversaries pieces of the information puzzle that, while unclassified, are still valuable.
Collecting intelligence is much like completing a puzzle, where bits of information can be pieced together to form a complete whole. Predictable behavior, casual conversations, discarded documents and routine acquisitions can all be indicators associated with planning processes or operations; and indicators can give away valuable information about an organizations missions or activities.
Even though information may not be secret, it is what is called critical information. Critical information deals with specific facts about military intentions, capabilities, operations, or activities.
Applying OPSEC counters the efforts of an organizationfs adversaries. Effective OPSEC minimizes the risk that critical information might be inadvertently given away

The following are some ways to practice OPSEC:
~ Shred excess paper involving information on operations
~ Do not discuss classified or sensitive information in open areas like NEX, Commissary, restrooms, libraries and other public places.
~ Be aware of established routines that could allow an adversary to predict future actions
~ Eliminate or reduce the amount of operational information posted on unclassified websites (ex: Myspace, Facebook etc)
~ Never try to talk around classified information- it is extremely difficult to outsmart experienced intelligence analysts.
~ Avoid discussing ships movements, port calls, TAD locations
~ Be aware that email sent over non-secure systems can be intercepted
~ Never attach classified or sensitive documents to unclassified email
~ When using cell phones, fax machines, or pagers, always assume they are being monitored. Equipment to illegally monitor these devices can be readily obtained on the open market.

Internet Considerations
It is especially important not to post sensitive information on the Internet. Web logging or Blogging is a type of online journal used by some Navy personnel and their family members to document deployment. These Internet sources make it possible for an adversary to compile sensitive information concerning unit morale, location, organization, personnel and family members. Blogs, web sites, and electronic newsletters are permitted as long as they do not violate OPSEC.

It's always fun to figure out how to say something without saying it. Like Taylor trying to tell me when he possibly could be leaving by telling me (seemingly) unrelated dates ~_~

Thanks for posting this. When I first joined the community I read the info that was on the website concerning OPSEC that's in the Info, but I was so confused, so I found this really helpful.

Yes, you may. :) I ganked the image off another military community here and made it into my new OPSC icon lol originally because of all the recent violations so I could use it when telling people to stop violating hahaha!

It's great! Good reminder with a little bit of humor to make it stick. As hard as it is to keep things to ourselves, it would be infinitely harder to deal with something happening because we shared too much information.
