~Quick announcement
It looks like we're going to have a small delay getting the exchange stories posted. Rather than have them up on Sunday, the stories will be posted on Monday. I know it's another 24 hours of waiting but I hope you think it'll be worth it. Once again the variety of stories is great, and some people really challenged themselves with subjects and genres they hadn't written before (and were very successful with it). So please hang out for one extra day and come back here Monday afternoon to see what gems have been produced this year. [More]

Going out there and dealing with the media and the screaming fans and so on. Sean comforts him so that eventually Orlando is able to go through the evening when he arrives.

From The Jackson Sun:
See where J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis walked, talked and prayed.
The birthplace of Narnia and Hobbits has been documented in a new book by two local professors.

Hal Poe and Jim Veneman provided the words and photos for a book exploring the world C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien and others lived in. Poe and Veneman, who both teach at Union University, traveled to Oxford, England, in 2007 to work on the book.

"The Inklings of Oxford," released in July, was an idea of Poe's for a long time. [Read the rest of the article]

From IntoMobile:
One Ring iPhone theme is for hard-core Lord of the Rings fans.
If you’re a hard-core fan of Tolkien's work, you certainly have some kind of related mobile content on your mobile. If you’re an iPhone user, unfortunately you can’t have your device branded with the Lord of the Rings content. Actually, you can, but your device needs to be jailbroken.

That said, we've spotted a new theme for the iPhone and iPod Touch called One Ring. As you can see from the screenshot, the main idea of the theme is Sauron's ring, which is made to "rule them all". Icons are shield-shaped, which I don’t like that much, but then again, I’m sure Tolkien fans won’t mind it at all…

More information is available from here, and the theme should be available for download through Cydia.

CHALLENGES/WORKSHOPS/AWARDS:

From [info]foxrafer:
Nominations are open for the Men of Middle Earth Awards, which celebrates the extensive variety of pairings in the LOTR slash fandom. Awards are presented based on story length and pairing for both FPS and RPS. Fics completed between July 1, 2008 and June 30, 2009 are eligible; stories completed by December 31, 2007 can be nominated in the Classic Fiction category. Specific guidelines and eligibility requirements are now posted.

Come join us in celebrating the wide range of pairings and awarding excellence in the LOTR slash community! If you have any questions, please send an e-mail to mome.awards@gmail.com.
From [info]foxrafer:
This week at [info]the_challenger:

What would happen if an actor had been cast in another part in his or her television show or movie? (For example, what if Orlando Bloom had been cast as Faramir, as he had originally auditioned, and not Legolas in Lord of the Rings.) Would his/her relationships on the show/film be different? How would their career be affected? Could be a character study through this different lens or a focus on a specific relationship that developed during filming. Conversely, take two fictional characters and swap their roles? Maybe Catherine Willows was Grissom's supervisor from the beginning. Or perhaps Faramir went to Rivendell instead of his brother. What would happen?

Deadline: September 9, 2009

Any fandom, any genre; real and fictional person pairings; slash, gen or het; fics, graphics, or videos.

If you think you'd like to play around with this idea, please leave a comment to express your interest (this isn't a commitment to post). And make sure to check out our previous challenges.

Middle-earth Conspiracy Theories
Just what did the Ring say to Frodo that tempted him so badly?

3 Ages of Melkor's Chaining
I'm struggling to understand what defined the ages during with Melkor was chained - other than the confusion with the more common naming of the ages (eg 3rd age - WOTR) etc I have seen references to other ages - the Age of the Lamps, of the Trees etc, but none of these fit, being before or after the chaning.

Can anyone clarify this matter?

Success of Tolkien
The Lord of the Rings has sold 150 million copies and the Hobbit 100 million copies. Tolkien is still getting his books published decades after his death. What do you think it is that appeals so much to people in his books? What is it that makes them so popular?

[info]caelieth is looking for a particular Legolas fic:
One of the main pairings was either Aragorn/Legolas, or one of the twins/Legolas. The scene I remember is Thranduil getting angry at Elrond for allowing the two to be together(?) and he goes to Rivendell. I think Elrond decided to take a walk and Thranduil confronted/attacked him. I believe the attack was non-con and I think the others save Elrond.

There was a lot more to the story, but that's the bit that sticks out in my mind.

Jackson, Taylor, Noble and TORn at Comic-Con
Comic-Con, a world showcase of pop-culture, has been trying to land Peter Jackson for the last decade since it was announce that he would helm the three-film adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s “Lord of The Rings.” Jackson sent along video to the mega-show for both LOTR and King Kong but for the first time the now big-time director will make the show in person.

UK LOTR Blu Ray Also Releasing in November?
Ho Jai writes: I just wanted to share some information I have had today from -snip- who works for an advertising agency exclusively for Warner Bros in the UK. I tried to pump him for any information he may be able to obtain about the Trilogy release on Blu Ray. From their website, it appears Warner Bros in the US are releasing the Blu Ray Trilogy in November (this we already knew -Xo).
As far as UK release, Entertainment Film Distributors are still under contract to release New Line movies on home video until 2010, so Warner Bros won’t be involved in the UK release therefore no exact inside news. But I have been reliably informed that it will be a Q4 release around a similar time though.

    Elijah Wood also at Comic-Con
Joining the list of LOTR-related guests appearing at Comic-Con is Elijah Wood promoting his film “9″ planned for release on 9/9/09. He will be joined by Jennifer Connelly and Tim Burton, among others. The official Comic-Con schedule describes it as “stitchpunk” and says it takes on the theme of “how one soul can change the world.” Sounds like Wood will fit right in. The panel is set for Friday, July 24, 2:30 - 3:30 p.m., Hall H.

Hobbiton’s True Potter Other Work on Display
Tyellas writes: The potter who did extensive work for the Lord of the Rings films, Mirek Smíšek, is currently having a gallery show in Waikanae, about 1/2 hour north of Wellington. This show reviews 60 years of his exceptionally graceful work, and shows us why he was chosen as the potter for Peter Jackson’s Middle Earth. ~Big news regarding the Tolkien/New Line legalities
Voronwë_the_Faithful, our resident message board legal brain, posted today about some developments in the lawsuit between the Tolkien Estate and New Line. Keep in mind this is simply one person's opinions but they are an interesting read by somebody who understands the law and can explain it simply. It starts, "New Line has now filed a motion for summary adjudication of the plaintiff's cause of action seeking the right to terminate New Line's future rights to make the Hobbit films (or other Tolkien films). In other words, they are asking to have that claim be dismissed entirely." [More]

~LotR re-read: Two Towers III.5, "The White Rider"
"Going back to Gandalf's combat with the Balrog briefly, it continues the theme of there being more things in Middle-earth than are concerned with the present struggle, the nameless creatures that gnaw the earth, and of forgotten things rediscovered, the Endless Stair. Also, I love the image of the Balrog bursting into new flame as it springs out onto the mountain ledge."

MEDIA NEWS:

From TORn:
Prince of Darkness: A rare audience with Sir Christopher Lee
Christopher Frank Carandini Lee CBE; it was a mouthful even before the announcement of his knighthood in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List last month, shortly before his 87th birthday, for services to the dramatic arts. Unofficially, Christopher Lee remains the king of the franchises, the only common denominator between the Lord of the Rings trilogy, the Star Wars series, the Bond films and the Hammer horrors.

By the estimation of most movie buffs Lee is the most prolific actor alive, possibly in cinematic history, with more than 350 big-screen credits to his name. Nor is there any sign of him slowing down. He plays a Spanish psychiatrist in the forthcoming Triage, one of four 2009 releases graced by his distinctive basso-profundo tones, if not always his aristocratic features (one of them is the animation Monster Mania, which he gleefully describes as “extremely funny”). A Conversation With Guillermo Del Toro
Ringer spy Michelf has sent us the link of Guillermo del Toro chatting with Charlie Rose. The interview features a great but short collection of clips and then the two jump into the rich soil of GDT’s imagination. Rose is his usual warm self and the director of the two “The Hobbit” movies is passionate about monsters, movies, writing, life and the horror of banal reality and tabloid existence. GDT talks about science fiction and fantasy and drops such gems as, “I am not a hardware guy. I am a biologically perverse guy. I am into squishy things.” Click here to enjoy.

A Weekend Tolkien Festival in the UK
Our friends from the Tolkien Society wrote in with a notice of the Penkridge Library Tolkien Festival, in Staffordshire (UK) happening July 10, 11 and 13. The area is where author J.R.R. Tolkien spent parts of 1915 and 1916 with his wife Edith and where some of his earliest thoughts and ideas about Middle-earth and its languages were formed. John Garth, author of the highly esteemed “Tolkien and the Great War,” will be giving a lecture along with a program of other events, which you can read inside. Read the rest of this entry »

From The Tolkien Society
Penkridge Library Tolkien Festival
10th, 11th & 13th July 2009

J.R.R Tolkien, the world famous author of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, spent part of 1915/1916 in the Army training camps on Cannock Chase and in a small cottage called Gipsy Green in Great Haywood near Penkridge with his wife Edith. These were some of the formative years in the development of his work on the languages and history of Middle Earth and it is believed that references in some of his work relate to Great Haywood, Shugborough Hall, Cannock Chase and the nearby Wrekin and Shropshire Hills.

Potentially BIG News Regarding the Tolkien/New Line Lawsuit
New Line has now filed a motion for summary adjudication of the plaintiff's cause of action seeking the right to terminate New Line's future rights to make the Hobbit films (or other Tolkien films). In other words, they are asking to have that claim be dismissed entirely.

New Line asserts three different argument to support this motion, all of which appear to me to have some merit (of course I've only read New Line's argument so far since they just filed the motion; I'll have to see what the plaintiffs' responses are). The first argument is that since the plaintiffs explicitly are only seeking termination of New Line's rights, while leaving the rest of the 1969 agreements intact, what they are seeking is a partial revocation of the contracts, and that is not allowed by law. The second argument is that what the plaintiffs are really seeking to do is to terminate New Line's agreement with third parties (Zaentz and Miramax), and that they do not have standing to that. The final argument is the one that I have been saying all along; that the attempt to terminate the rights is not ripe, because the agreements specifically state that the agreements cannot be subject to termination or revocation until a final determination has been made by a court of competent jurisdiction that a sufficiently significant breach has occurred, and a final determination would not occur until any appeals are finally decided.

I am cautiously optimistic that there is a good chance this motion will be granted, removing the potential obstacle to the Hobbit films, regardless of what happens at trial (if there is a trial). Of course, that optimism might be lessened once I read the plaintiff's arguments. The hearing is scheduled to be heard on September 15.

Ring Master made me think
Of all the books I wish I could read again for the first time. A few being:
Eddings' "Belgariad" and "Mallorean"
McCaffrey's Pern novels
Rowlings' Potter series
Goodkind's Sword of Truth novels
and most of all, LOTR

So, if there was a magic pill or Vulcan Mind Meld clinic, what book memories would you have wiped so you could read them again for the first time?
OR
do you most enjoy reading over and over, finding new things every time, thinking of new interpretations of events at a new reading?

Middle-earth Conspiracy Theories
So why did Eru really send Gandalf back to Middle-earth?

[info]takkid is looking for podfics:
When going to the hospital for treatment, I've found that listening to Podfics great way to burn time and keep my mind off things. So as you can imagine I've been haging around http://audiofic.jinjurly.com/ a lot lately. To my immense dismay, there is only two Lotrips fics there, both are Dom/Ron Weasley (both surprisingly delightful). And so I bring you this request: I want Lotrips podfics, please!

I like Dom, Billy, Elijah and Sean, in any combination, but especially Monaboyd. But, I'm desperate, and will take any.

Also, after listening to the two Dom/Ron fics, I'm also looking for any HP or Supernatural or Spn RPF crossovers, be they podfics or just text.

Thank you so much in advance!
