Cheesy Rice and Broccoli [Apr. 21st, 2008|12:26 pm]

What Green Giant had to say: "Rice and broccoli in a cheese flavored sauce"

Nutrition Facts:
Calories: 270 (1/2 cup=100 calories)
Calories from fat: 40
Sodium: 41% (yikes)
Dietary fiber: 9%

My thoughts: This was another microwaved pouch dish, so I'm already not super happy because I have to wash a dish (!!!), but this was seriously messy. The directions state that you have to cut a small slit in the pouch and microwave it and then cut the pouch open and pour it into a serving dish. That is semi-impossible to do because there is a lot of cheese sauce and the pouch is very hot, so you either have to wait for the cheese sauce to congeal in the package (I was too hungry to do this) or pray for asbestos hands.
Aside from that, this was really good! The broccoli was cooked perfectly and was all florets. It tasted exactly like freshly cooked broccoli. The rice was perfect, not dry at all, probably because it steams inside the bag. The cheese sauce was nuclear orange (fine with me) and tasted like Velveeta (also fine with me), but the package says that it has dried parmesan cheese, dried blue cheese, and dried cheddar cheese. It really only tasted like cheddar, but ok.

I give it 4.5 stars because of it is kind of messy and its high sodium content

Green Giant Simply Steam Seasoned: Garden Vegetable Medley [Apr. 20th, 2008|06:22 pm]

What Green Giant had to say: "Sugar snap peas, roasted potatoes, red peppers and garden vegetables"

Nutrition Facts:
Servings: 2
Calories: 50
Calories from fat: 5g
Total Fat: .5g
Sodium: 12%

My thoughts: This was a pretty good snack or side dish. The vegetables were a little random (I don't know who thinks that red peppers are side-dish-worthy, but they're not unless they are apart of a shish kebab), but overall tasty and perfectly cooked. The sauce was AMAZING, garlicky and herby and buttery and delicious, especially on the potatoes. The only downside is that you have to put this in a bowl and eat it, which means that I'll actually have to wash dishes.

5 stars!

I am seriously loving these Green Giant steamers (I've had one for dinner almost every night this week!)

Green Giant Simply Steam “Healthy Weight” Vegetable Mix
-Sliced carrots, sugar snap peas, black beans and edamame lightly tossed with butter sauce.
-90 Calories per serving. Just under 2 servings per package (I age almost all of it.)
-2.5g Total Fat

Molly Says: If you've never tried steamed edamame, its time you give it a shot. This is the perfect way to try something new (for me, it was the steamed black beans. I'm still warming up to beans after a lifetime of avoiding them due to my great dislike of their texture.) This mixture was a match made in heaven. I would have never imagined that this particular combination of vegetables would compliment each other so nicely- I guess thats why Green Giant does the thinking and I do the eating. The sugar snap peas were mostly tender with a slight snap as you bite into them. The carrots were tender and had a fantastic fresh flavor. The edamame provided a slight crunch while maintaining a consistent pleasant texture. The black beans held their shape well, but were easily the softest element of the meal. Together this meal had an interesting mouth-feel. The various textures made this meal complex. There was a perfect amount of buttery sauce in this meal. Just enough to faintly coat each vegetable without leaving a pool on my plate. Bravo Green Giant! Highly recommended!

I loved the complexity of flavor and texture. Everything was tasty and this mix was surprisingly more filling than the others!

This is the second of the three Green Giant “Simply Steam” steamed vegetable packets that I picked up the other day. I had this last night for dinner and it confirmed my positive impression of the concept and how Green Giant has found a unique way to improve upon it.

Green Giant Simply Steamed “Garden Vegetable Medley”
-Sugar snap peas, roasted potatoes, red peppers & garden herbs.
-50 Calories/serving (two servings/packet- I ate both.)
-0.5g Total fat

Molly Says: Last night Rich played a concert (for those of you who don't know, Rich is a fantastic drummer!) When we were finally packed up and left the concert, we both realized that we hadn't had anything to eat in about 8 hours. While Rich was craving Mighty Taco, I could only think of one meal-type that could truly comfort and relax me (frankly, the thought of refried beans after a show was enough to make me a little nauseous.) It was burritos for Rich and this Green Giant steamer packet for me! After the last packet, I thought that I had made the mistake of trying what would turn out to be the best in flavor and texture first. I was wrong. This variety was even better than the first. The herb/butter mixture was delightful! All of the herbs tasted fresh and crisp. The flavor really came through very naturally. The potatoes were a delicious and sustaining addition to the mix. They were creamy and worked well with the sugar snap peas. The sugar snap peas were perfectly fresh tasting and the little peas within the pod popped in my mouth. They were sweet and again, tasted great in the herb and butter mixture. My only complaint is that the red peppers were somewhat flavorless. That seems to be pretty common in microwavable meals. I'm sure you've all experienced (or rather, not experienced) the red pepper bits in Lean Cuisine meals. They tend to slip under the radar as far as flavor is concerned. These were larger than the bits you find in LC meals, but still managed to be quite flavorless. Regardless of their effort, they were not missed. I was satisfied with this meal (with a piece of whole grain bread) and plan on keeping these Simply Steam packets as a staple in my diet.

4.5 of 5 stars
Frankly, I dug the entire meal, but I'm deducting half a point for the largely unnoticeable red peppers.

For dinner last night I had a TON of veggies in a delicious buttery sauce for less than 150 calories.

Green Giant Simply Steam “Seasoned Baby Vegetable Medley”
-Sugar snap peas, cauliflower and baby cut carrots.
-40 calories per serving. There are approximately three servings per box (slightly less.)
-1g Total fat

Molly Says: These veggies are Green Giant's latest approach to a fairly popular new trend. It seems that every brand has a new microwavable-steam-in-the-bag style product. I'm happy to say that Green Giant's was both delicious and innovative. I loved the addition of a buttery sauce to the parsley and garlic seasonings. Each veggie in this particular mixture complimented the others well. The sugar snap peas were fresh and maintained some of that “snap” that they are so well loved for. The carrots were tender and delicious. The cauliflower was perfectly steamed and absorbed the buttery sauce making for a fantastic, seasoned flavor. I ate about half and then added about a tablespoon of the Thai peanut sauce I used to make Rich's dinner of mahi mahi and udon noodles. They were delicious with the peanut sauce which showed me how versatile these steamed vegetables could be. I can imagine that adding these vegetables to a cup of your favorite pasta with a sprinkling of Parmesan cheese would make for a fantastic, fresh evening meal. Green Giant has a variety of vegetable combinations and I've got two more in the freezer that I can't wait to try. I highly recommend these as an easy and delicious vegetable side or recipe add in.
