I am not vegan but I don't eat dairy (unless its a small ingredient and I don't notice) so I was glad to find this really yummy burrito! I microwaved it (you could also bake this, takes way long) and I thought it came out fine. You loosely wrap it in a paper towel and cook for a minute and a half on each side. It doesn't look super pretty but it tastes great. I used a little salsa with mine.

I've had two for lunch the past week and got three more on my grocery shopping trip yesterday. I haven't tried the other flavors that are non-dairy yet but I'd like to.

These are also really low-fat/cal for frozen burritos.

I give this 4 stars!

Chicken Enchilads Suiza [Apr. 24th, 2008|10:52 am]

My thoughts: I did not really like this meal. The rice was perfectly cooked and tasty, the sauce was very good, but I did not enjoy the enchilada itself. The corn tortilla was very soggy and had a weird texture. The filling was alright except that it tasted way too acidic. I'm glad that there was some acid to contrast the sour cream sauce, but it was overwhelmingly LIME. The chicken in the filling was very good, no fatty pieces, and it was shredded which, to me, is better than the formed pieces.

My thoughts: I picked this up because I have been craving something spicy and while this didn't satiate that craving, it was really good. The rice was perfect and the dish was seasoned well (more smokey than spicy). The sour cream sauce was pretty good, but there really wasn't any need for it. The beans presented the only problem in that some were soft and some were kind of crunchy which was weird. This dish would be a lot better with some salsa and extra corn, but I really enjoyed it otherwise.

I just tried...

Amy's “Chili & Cornbread Whole Meal” - and LOVED it.
“A soul satisfying meal of cornbread and tasty organic chili with organic beans and vegetables and just enough spice to lift your spirits. This tastes so great it's hard to believe that the entire 10 1/2 oz. meal contains only 6 gms. of fat. Only 6 gms of fat per 10 oz. Serving.”

Molly Says: I am quite literally kicking myself for not trying this meal sooner. I love Amy's chili (the ones you can buy in the can. I especially love that you can choose the level of heat you are comfortable with.) Why would I ever think that the chili might not be great in a frozen meal? Frankly, what is most shocking is the calorie count and amount of fat. I cant believe that both are so low! This meal definitely tastes like full calorie, homemade soul-food. The cornbread is sweet and flavorful. The added honey creates a pleasing sweetness, while the sea salt brings out the natural flavor of the corn- and adds a savory element to the bread. The bread is dense enough to be considered a side. The brown rice has great texture. I love the addition of broccoli, carrots and sea salt as flavoring. The rice has a kind of cracked, dry quality that absorbs the sauce from the chili, making it even more delicious. The chili is truly something amazing. The black beans were earthy and flavorful. There were onions, tomatoes, bell peppers and green chilies- all organic. The dish was not offensively spicy by any means, but managed to warm up my mouth and throat nicely. While I may enjoy a spicier chili when I make it at home- this chili wasn't lacking anything. Perfectly enjoyable as was! Naturally, I mixed everything together and crumbled up my cornbread into the mix as well. This meal was satisfying, warming, flavorful and even exciting. I was overwhelmingly pleased with this meal and will definitely buy it again soon. I suggest you all do the same!

Amy's Mexican Casserole Bowl [Jan. 22nd, 2008|02:22 pm]

[Feelin' | regretful.]

Amy's says: "Organic white corn masa, black beans, sweet golden corn, olives, tomatoes and a careful blend of chili peppers and spices. It’s a delicious addition to Amy’s family of Mexican food."

470 calories, 16 grams of fat(!!!), 5 grams of saturated fat, 780 mg of sodium (!!!), 7 grams of fiber, 11 grams of protein.

The smell of this coming out of the microwave reminded me of the horrible cheese enchilada disaster, but I pressed on anyway. I honestly didn't know what masa was till I had this, and even then, I had to google image search it to really be sure. It's some kind of tortilla bread, and in this they were really thick and had the texture of a microwaved baked potato (in the best way possible.) The pieces of masa were huge and made this meal really filling. My complaint though is that there was too much corn going on: in the masa and the actual sweet corn pieces. The beans were tasty with the corn, but I didn't see or taste the olives. The cheese was definitely some of the best frozen dinner cheese I've ever had. It was stretchy and tasted fresh. I was overwhelmed by how much food was in the meal, probably because a lot of it was corn. I guess I just have a hang up about eating healthily, and though this may be all natural or organic, it just didn't feel healthy at all. I may as well have had Taco Bell because Taco Bell is cheaper, tastes better, and I know when I eat it that it's total crap nutrition-wise.

I give this meal 1.5 stars out of 5 because the cheese and rice were good, but there was way too much corn.

I was so excited to see Amy's kitchen trying Tamales in their newest batch of products. When our box from Michelle Erbs (Amy's Marketing Manager) arrived, I was most excited about this meal.

Amy's “Cheese Tamale Verde”
“All the ingredients for our Cheese Tamales are carefully selected and prepared. The organic masa (ground and cooked corn) is poured onto individual parchments, filled with a mixture of Monterey Jack cheese, chilies and jalapeños, and then folded and steamed. The tamales are then unwrapped by hand, topped with our delicious verde sauce and served with a side of Spanish rice made from organic brown rice and organic black beans.”

Molly Says: I could not WAIT to try Amy's Tamales when I saw them listed as a new product on Amy's Website. When Michelle offered to add us to Amy's press list (thereby sending us new products when they're made available) I was literally counting the days until I could pop this into my microwave. All of my excitement was well placed in this product. Amy's Tamales are unbelievable! Whats most impressive about the meal, hands down, is the verde sauce. I'll admit that I haven't ventured out for real Mexican cuisine in some time, and so the verde sauce is something that I haven't tried in quite awhile, if ever. The flavor is like nothing I've ever tasted. Sweet and spicy with a hint of something unique that I couldn't put my finger on. I wish there were more of this delicious sauce. The rice is perfect. I love the richness of the black beans and the texture of the organic brown rice. When mixed together in a smoky tomato sauce, this made for one of the most flavorful Spanish rice mixtures I've ever had. The serving of the rice was generous. Onto the tamale. WOW! The masa is PERFECT. I was afraid that the tamale might not translate well to a microwavable meal but I was dead wrong. The masa steams in the package and is absolutely tender (yet firm enough to hold the filling completely) and delicious. The cheese, pepper and tomato filling is (as Paula Deen might say) “OUT OF THIS WORLD!” This meal was the perfect mixture of spicy, sweet, rich, light, bold and delicate flavors that will leave you satisfied and eager to buy more. BRAVO Amy's Kitchen!

Amy's Kid's Meals: Mexican Quesadilla [Jan. 18th, 2008|01:25 pm]

[Feelin' | accomplished]

Right off the bat, I want to say, WOW! This was one of the best little frozen meals I've ever had.

Disclosure: OK, I got this meal for free courtesy of Amy's via [info]right_track and [info]sgt_easton, ever so graciously. However, I will say that I would gladly pay a few dollars for this meal over and over. It's just that good, so disclosure or no, this meal gets 5 stars from me.

***

Amy's Kid's Meals: Mexican Quesadilla with Rice and Beans
420 calories
15g fat, 7g fiber, 13g protein

Here's another meal that didn't look too promising during prep time. One beef I did have with this meal, actually, was that the chocolate cake (in its own separate container) that is included needs to be taken out of the package before you heat the meal. However, mine was totally frozen onto the rice and beans and wasn't going to budge. The easy solution is to simply keep it in, and throw it in the microwave for just a few seconds enough for it to melt away and come out easily. Not a huge deal, but a tiny bit messy.

You leave out the quesadillas for the first minute or so of cooking, then add them back to finish up. There are two quesadillas, not three as you see on the package, but I'll forgive Amy's –- the quesadillas are the absolute star of this show. While they did not look quite as pretty as on the package, they were full of delectable flavor and cheesy goodness. Along with the well-seasoned rice and beans, the overall taste of this meal rivals, if not surpasses, any Mexican restaurant around here (OK, so I don't live in Texas or wherever, but still -- I've had some decent Mexican here in and around Niagara Falls, NY. ;) I really coudn't believe how tasty the quesadillas were, actually; I could probably eat about a dozen of 'em! Of course, because this meal is microwaved, the tortillas got a little soggy/crispy (you know, that weird sort of way foods can get soggy in one spot and crispy in another when you microwave? Like that), but it really did not detract from the enjoyment level of this meal.

Then, they include chocolate cake for dessert! It is very tasty indeed, not bland at all but not too rich, either. It had a slightly spongy consistency, which was fine. For the calories and fat content (if you are worried about that stuff), I would say this meal gives great bang for the "buck". I am currently trying to eat better overall, and this fit easily into my daily nutritional allotment. Just over 400 calories including dessert? Awesome.

It's labeled a Kid's Meal (with the little tagline in small letters before saying "not just for", cute and clever!), but this was more than satisfying for a big girl lunch, too.

One final thing I should note is that those with sensitive stomachs might want to steer clear. This meal sort of went right through me, if you know what I mean... but was it worth it?

Well, yeah.

***** Five stars for delectable cheesy goodness, just-right spices, and a heavenly chocolate ending!

Amy's Enchilada [Jan. 18th, 2008|01:04 pm]

"Made with organic tortillas, black beans, and vegetables."

It's a vegan meal.

180 Calories (FYI there's two servings in the box)
6g fat
26g carbs

Please note that I took this picture with my archaic, off-brand digital camera, so the enchiladas do look better in real life.

I think the first thing that stood out to me in this dish is the sauce.  I think it's the most genuine enchilada sauce I've ever had in a frozen meal.  Amy's doesn't try to cover up bad taste with heat, either.  It just tastes good.  There's a lot of sauce in here, and I think it's because it keeps the tortillas from drying up in the microwave.  The end of one of mine poked through the sauce and because of it, became stiff.

The tortillas are good.  What impressed me is that they didn't fall apart while I was eating them, like some other frozen meals I've had.

The vegetables inside are tasty.  The corn tastes very fresh, as do the black beans.  The olives are subtle.  I didn't notice the tofu or the zucchini, and I really wish I did.  I think those tastes would have really made this meal perfect.

Rating: 4.5 of 5 stars.  My only complaint is that I didn't notice some ingredients in the enchiladas.  Everything else was perfect.

[Feelin' | calm]

For dinner tonight I tried Amy's “Kids Meal Mexican Quesadilla with Rice and Beans” courtesy of Amy's marketing manager Michelle Erbs.

“This is a kids’ meal that Amy truly loves. Quesadillas are deliciously complemented by Amy's traditional refried beans and perfectly seasoned Spanish rice. There’s a mouth-watering chocolate cake for a sweet ending, as well as a page inside the box for kids to color.”
-420 Calories
-15g Total Fat

Molly Says: Amy's has stepped away from the standard kid-favorite foods and managed to create a pleasing, kid-friendly Mexican-style meal suitable for any little chico or chica. The newest kids meal offers a kicked up variety while remaining completely suitable for any child's palate. Amy's uses whole wheat tortillas that somehow taste akin to a flour tortilla making them unoffensive to a child's limited tolerance for (ewww....) healthy food! The tortillas are filled with organic cheddar cheese, a creamy contrast to the tasty tortilla. To complement the quesadillas, Amy's kitchen adds a dollop of their refried beans. The refried beans in this kids meal are noticeably more smooth than those used in the adult versions of their Mexican style meals. If I had to guess, I'd say that Amy's kitchen does this by design, to avoid the possible choking hazard that may be presented by a big bean. The refried beans are topped with a sprinkling of cheese. Because of their smooth texture, the beans worked as a dip for my quesadillas. Amy's kitchen manages to sneak broccoli, onions and tomatoes into their rice mixture, while keeping the rice totally non-offensive to even the most picky palate. The whole meal is topped off by a piece of chocolate cake. Amy's uses maple syrup to sweeten the smooth and moist chocolate cake. There is a coloring picture printed inside one of the panels of the box and a maze on the back of the box, a great way to keep kids busy while microwaving this unique Mexican kids meal.

While I wouldn't recommend this meal to an adult, due to the lack of spices and diverse ingredients (all for the purpose of making the meal “kid-friendly” mind you) I would absolutely recommend this meal to parents looking for a healthy and organic kids meal that encourages open mindedness and growth of palate in their children.

I give Amy's “Kids Meal Mexican Quesadilla with Rice and Beans”
4.5 of 5 stars

Lean Cuisine Three Bean Chili [Jan. 5th, 2008|07:16 pm]

Calories: 270
Fat: 7g
WW: 5 points

On the box it says: Three bean chili with rice, peppers, fire roasted tomatoes & corn

I had this one for dinner tonight. It's not something I'd normally get, as there's no meat! Nor am I a big bean person. The three beans are black beans, dark red kidney beans and pinto beans. I'm used to kidney beans, but not the others. I must have been feeling adventurous when I bought this. :)

But it was really really good! All that variety of ingredients makes it very colourful, and very flavourful - it's not bland at all. Plus it's topped with cheese, which is always a good thing in my book. I will definitely get this one again.

5 out of 5 stars. :)

Amy's Black Bean and Vegetable Burrito [Dec. 31st, 2007|02:56 pm]

[Feelin' | pleased]

I love burritos, but I haven't had a good microwave one like ever till now.

Amy's website says: "Organic flour tortilla wrapped around a combination of organic black beans and vegetables in a mild Mexican sauce. Nice and spicy. Non-dairy/no cholesterol."

280 calories, 8 grams fat, 1 grams saturated fat, 580 mg sodium, 4 grams fiber, 9 grams protein.
vegan, 92% organic dairy free, lactose free, soy free, kosher.

I was in the mood for some beans because I felt like I hadn't eaten healthy the day before. I'd had this burrito in my freezer forever because I'm never that pleased with microwave burritos. We just got a new microwave at work, so I wasn't sure how powerful it was and microwaved it for the max times.
I wrapped it loosely in a paper towel like instructed to on the wrapper. When I took it out of the microwave, some of the contents had spilled out the sides, and part of the burrito tortilla was stuck to the paper towel.
It was chock full of vegetables, which is awesome. I saw and tasted perfectly cooked pieces of potato, various peppers, broccoli, corn, and of course, beans. the sauce was plentiful and tasty, though it did have the typical microwave meal salty aftertaste. It wasn't very spicy hot, but it did have a nice seasoned spice taste.
The tortilla was awesome, even though I probably overcooked it. It was crispy where it should be, and soft and light in other places.
I'm not thrilled with the sodium content, but this was definitely the best microwave burrito I've ever had. I still can't believe the vegetable content, and if I hadn't read a prior review of this in this community, the lack of cheese would never have occurred to me.
I will definitely eat this again.

4.5 out of 5 stars for a slight microwave flavor but excellence otherwise.

5 points for all of you WeightWatchers folks

I had mediocre expectations when I dropped this into the cart, but I had secretly hoped that it would be good.  And sure enough, it actually was.  I think that pasta is an important part of the meals that it's in, and, this meal has it right.  The black beans are good.  They taste very similar to the black beans from the Amy's meals...maybe the same grower?  The meal could use more yellow pepper strips, as well as little more chicken, but what was there tasted good.  The ancho chili sauce was tasty (not very spicy, either) and in the right proportion.

Rating:  **** 4 out of 5 stars.

It's good, and I'll buy it again, but it won't be in my regular rotation.

Shocking News: Mighty Amy’s strikes out!  Fans leave dinner table stunned and disappointed.  It’s the end of Amy’s career long winning streak!

That’s right folks. This is an old fashioned strike out by one of our most beloved brands. Amy’s kitchen, WHY?!

Amy’s Kitchen “Tortilla Casserole & Black Beans Bowl”
-390 Calories
-18g Total Fat

Molly Says: I had hoped this day would never come. I was initially wary of this meal because of its tremendous fat content and abnormally high calorie count. Still, I yearned for spicy, bean-y goodness and Amy’s was there to deliver what would come to be known as their worst performance yet. I’ll start with the good part of this meal, and what earned it two stars: the black beans. The black beans in this meal were delicious. They would make a spectacular addition to any Mexican/southwestern style meal, without a doubt. They were topped with a sprinkle of Monterey jack and cheddar cheese which held them together in a cheesy, creamy and pleasing way. The beans cooked up perfectly and the taste was award worthy. The “tortilla casserole” however, was literally offensive.  It tasted like Doritos layered with cheese, tofu fragments and a mixture of onions and peppers, that were doused in some kind of liquid (the box says: Lime juice, filtered water and extra virgin olive oil…) and left in the back window of my car on a very hot day. The tortillas (read: Doritos) were soggy in the middle and lower layers, and crispy at the edges that emerged from this catastrophe of a casserole. I tried to save it with a dollop of light sour cream, but alas, it was unable to be resuscitated.  Amy’s released two new “bowls” meals of Mexican/southwestern inspiration in their last batch of new products. The first was the "Mexican Casserole Bowl" which was very pleasing, delicious, satisfying etc. The second was this “Tortilla Casserole & Black Beans Bowl”- the bastard stepchild of the aforementioned meal.   I can’t imagine that anyone could find the tortilla casserole segment of this meal to be pleasing OR nutritious. I expect both of these things from Amy’s health conscious, organic and vegetarian (and so often delicious) company. My advice is to nix this meal altogether. I don’t think it could be saved. The concept of layering tortilla chips with cheese and relevant vegetables and spices is something I’d expect from Hamburger Helper, not Amy’s Kitchen.

… And the moral of this story is: All that glitters isn’t gold.

I give Amy’s “Tortilla Casserole & Black Beans Bowl”
* * 2 of 5 stars
I was diggin’ the black beans but the casserole couldn’t be saved.

Amy's Organic Cheese Enchiladas [Dec. 23rd, 2007|06:32 pm]

[Feelin' | sick]

First off, I want to apologize profusely for not providing a picture. I really felt this needed to be posted. Dan lost his phone and Amy's website is acting up. For that reason, my review details are per the box.

Amy's box says: "Looking for great tasting Mexican food?...You don't have to go out to eat! You can relax and enjoy Amy's Cheese Enchiladas in the comfort of your home and get the same quality and flavor you would find in a fine restaurant. Our delicious enchiladas are made from a genuine Mexican recipe handed down through three generations of chefs at one of San Francisco's finest Mexican restaurants. We start with fresh tortillas made with organic white corn, fill them with a blend of jack and cheddar cheeses accented by olives and peppers, and cover them with a traditional Mexican sauce made from organic tomatoes."

This is where I start to get irked: the serving size is one enchilada, but there are two in the seemingly individual sized box.
per one enchilada: 240 calories, 14 grams of fat, 6 grams of saturated fat, 44 mg of sodium, 2 grams of fiber, and 10 grams of protein.
)=

This is definitely the worst frozen dinner I have ever had, and I say that without any reservations. There is no way this would be served in a restaurant and enjoyed, but my main problem is that lately I haven't been pleased with my Amy's selections, like the Nacho Snacks or the strawberry Toaster Pops. My problem with those was my high expectations for Amy's, but this was far and beyond those two in that it was bad for food in general.

First, let me start with the cooking instructions. I'm not into using less than 100% power on a microwave. There is a HUGE difference between the two I use (work and home) and it's something I have to figure out and get totally different results from depending on the microwave. This one starts with a 5 min cooking time at 50% and then a 1 min 45 sec cooking time I assumed at 100% since it didn't say.
Then the smell. I'm not big on corn tortillas. I understand that enchiladas call for them, but that doesn't help this meal's case.
I really wish I had a picture for the next problem. I have NEVER seen so much grease in one meal. scratch that. I have NEVER seen so much grease in a family-size meal. It was disgusting and everywhere. I used some Subway (ironic!) napkins and pour the grease out of the meal onto them. I would estimate 2-4 tablespoons' worth. SICK. of course, by then I'm totally horrified by the idea of putting this in my mouth, but these meals are so expensive, and at that point I was thinking of this community and how I need to get this information out.
So I cut into them with a plastic fork and knife and discover the common problem encountered with frozen dinners that include breads: the ends of both enchiladas were too hard to cut or eat. The parts that weren't tough were chewy and still too tough.
The filling was purely cheese and probably would've been somewhat good (though unhealthy tasting) if the entire meal wasn't encased in grease. I ate less than half of each of them before giving up and eating crackers to soak up the grease. Then I had to wipe my mouth vigorously with paper towels to get the grease off my face.

For all these reasons, this meal is a 0 out of 5 stars for me. Maybe it was my microwave. Maybe it just sucked. All I know is I'm NEVER buying or eating this again.

My apologies to:

[info]thomasirvin for taking so long to review this burrito. I intended to eat this burrito several times, but the fact that it was cheeseless swayed my decision numerous times (especially when I've had cheesy options on deck.) This burrito taught me many things, the most important of which is not to turn down foods of known quality based on ingredients (or lack there of.) That said, here is Amy's “Black Bean Burrito.”

Molly Says: I've been on both sides of the fence with Amy's burritos. I've throughly enjoyed some, and been unimpressed by others. This burrito was delicious, despite my prejudice about cheeseless foods. This is the first burrito that didn't explode in my microwave. I considered that to be a positive omen. I peeled this burrito open so you could see its insides. I also topped it with a dollop of light sour cream, but made sure to taste it without for the sake of this review. This burrito was amazing. Easily the best Amy's burrito of the bunch. The burrito was generously swollen with corn, tomatoes, potatoes, red bell peppers, black beans, kidney beans, broccoli, chilies... the list goes on to name herbs and spices galore. This burrito was sweet, spicy and smoky. What surprised me the most is that I didn't miss the cheese at all! I would absolutely recommend this burrito. I wish I had tried this sooner and I will absolutely buy more next time I'm at the store.

When Rich and I went to visit my Dad in Syracuse we stopped by what MUST be the largest Wegmans market (with the largest organic section) that I’ve ever seen. We picked up several meals that are unavailable in our area including this Helen’s Kitchen meal. I only wish we had picked up a few more of these. If nothing else Helen’s Kitchen “Cheese Enchiladas” have motivated me to schedule another visit to Syracuse.

Helen’s Kitchen “Cheese Enchiladas” with tofu steaks in spicy red sauce.
- This is where I would put the company’s explanation of the product however there is no company pitch of this product anywhere on the box or website. Clearly Helen’s Kitchen knows that this meal speaks for itself.
-150 calories per serving. Serving size is one enchilada (I ate both.)
-9.1g Total fat/serving

Molly Says: There are plenty of people who immediately pass up a meal if Tofu is the primary ingredient. I was one of those people for the longest time (even after becoming a vegetarian.) The reason for this is that many people have had bad experiences with tofu, and who can blame them? So many meals neglect using the product to its full potential. I’m sorry that I didn’t buy more of these and I’m sorry I let it sit in the freezer for as long as I did. This meal is remarkable, and to my surprise, the tofu only helped bring me to that conclusion. The meal is quite basic, using basic ingredients present in Spanish/Mexican cuisine to create a very pleasant ethnic meal. The corn tortillas are enhanced with the addition of lime juice. They are wrapped around firm spiced tofu steaks (which, as I had mentioned, were the perfect texture and flavor) and permeated by a spicy tomato-based enchilada/cheese sauce. The spiciness was a welcome change from some other American-palate-pleasing variations of enchiladas that I’ve tried in the past. This meal was rich and surprisingly diverse. The mixture of cheddar and Monterey jack cheese with the tomato based ethnic spiced sauce was unbelievably delicious. The simplistic approach to enchiladas was well received by my fairly selective palate. I could taste the spices and viewed them as a special surprise from a company that is doing one thing (in the case of frozen foods, one thing at a time [IE no sides]) and doing it very well. I could have been served this meal in a restaurant and been just as pleased. If you have reservations about tofu, or if you’ve been disappointed by frozen food retailers approach to ethnic cuisine (or if you just want an extremely pleasant lunch) I would recommend giving this meal a try. I feel confident that you’ll enjoy this product thoroughly.

I give Helen’s Kitchen “Cheese Enchiladas”

First, going into this, this meal has a special place in my heart. Along with the previously reviewed ziti, this is the reason why I no longer feel the need to eat out as much.

However, I was a tiny bit nervous yesterday because the box I purchased had a new picture on the front. This immediately made me afraid that they had changed the way they made it as well.

When I opened the box, I could see that something had changed. They was a much bigger portion of rice and different peppers on top of the enchilada.

Rice: I was excited that there was more but as soon as I bit into some, I realized it was blander than before. This was disappointing and I used some excess sour cream sauce and stirred it in to make it spicier. This worked and I was happy.

Enchilada: I can see how this might be disappointing for some people. The chicken is kind of mushy. Almost like a chicken puree and the tortilla is hard. This reminds me more of flautas than an enchilada but I still love it

Sauce: The absolute best sauce I have ever tasted. It makes up for all the other deficiencies and it is just the perfect amount of spicy. I don't think I would ever want to taste the smartones enchiladas monterey because without this sauce the dish would be nothing.

Amy’s “Southwestern Burrito”

Molly says: I apologize for the poor quality of the picture. Our digital camera is on its last legs and this was taken with Rich’s cell phone. The burrito is approximately 5 inches long and maybe 2 ½ wide. It is filled with the perfect ratio of the ingredients listed in the description. What’s better is that I can taste and identify every ingredient too. I found that the “Bean and Cheese Burrito” by Amy’s kitchen was very bland. Such is not the case with the “Southwestern Burrito.” It’s pleasantly spicy and has a somewhat diverse texture (crunchy corn, soft beans and cheese, salty olives and spicy poblano pepper pieces.) My only complaint is that while microwaving this by the heating directions, the filling blew out both ends of the burrito. I lost a substantial amount of filling which soaked into the paper towel that the burrito was wrapped in while microwaving. I have a theory on why Amy’s burritos always ooze out the ends while microwaving. I have NO complaints about the texture or thickness of the whole wheat tortilla. I think that because the tortilla is thin and ideal, the likelihood of having a “blow out” is much greater. I think I would be more disappointed if the tortilla (like so many others) was too thick and the burrito had very little filling. I wish Amy’s kitchen could perfect this flaw, if it didn’t blow up, it would have easily gotten five stars.

I give Amy’s “Southwestern Burrito
* * * * 4 of 5 stars
Almost ideal but that blow out will cost you…

hormel vegetarian chili with beans [Nov. 6th, 2007|10:48 am]

[Feelin' | disgusted.]

i'm used to eating the hot with beans variety. this is my first chili (besides black bean at sweet tomatoes, which is totally different) since becoming vegetarian... i'm not excited.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

2 servings per can
99% fat free (1 g fat per serving, no saturated or trans fat)
780 mgs of sodium per serving
11 g of dietary fiber per serving
12 g protein per serving
15% of iron per serving (important when you're vegetarian)

i was thoroughly turned off by this chili. it was pretty watery and way too sweet.
that's one of the problems with vegetarian versions of regular brands of food. they only come in one variety, and it's not the hot variety.
the beans were good as usual though. fortunately, it just one of the many things in my "taco salad" and did its job in the salad.

i had to add some seasonings to the chili itself:

and this is how it looked once it was covered by things that tasted good:

i totally forgot the cheese til i was halfway through.

i can't guarantee i won't eat this again, but i have 2 other vegetarian chili candidates lined up for your reading pleasure. there was a time when i'd opt for hormel chili instead of pace picante sauce to add to my velveeta for nachos. at this point, that time is never again.

2 out of 5 stars because the beans were good and i was able to cover my disgust in spices and salad fixin's.

Amy’s “Cheddar Cheese Burrito”- Is it all hype? (Sounds like I’m going to gripe.)

Molly Says: Meltdown! Everyone evacuate immediately! Buyer Beware: This bean burrito has an explosive tendency. Not a travel friendly food! Ok- moving on. The burrito blew out both ends in the microwave. Ug (sincerely hoping that’s not an implication to what comes next…) The burrito wasn’t terrible, but I think my lifetime distaste for beans may be relapsing. It was VERY bean-y! I did really like the tortilla, it was soft and tasty (and easy to cut through, as I clearly had to eat this with a fork.) The burrito didn’t seem cheesy enough to me. I chose to buy this burrito because it said “Cheddar Cheese” quite directly, and for that reason, I assumed it might be more rice and cheese and a little less bean. I really couldn’t taste the cheese, or notice the rice over the beans. It’s not that the beans didn’t taste good, but I can’t do the texture of squishy beans in such large amounts. I would suggest this burrito only if you are a real bean freak (which I am not.)

I give Amy’s “Cheddar Cheese(?)Burrito”
* * ½ of 5 stars
For its tasty tortilla, but overly “bean-y” quality (no beans about it!)
