Early Review - Linger

  • Jan. 3rd, 2010 at 10:02 PM
Linger isn't due out until July, so I'm not going to write a very detailed review, but I'm so excited for this book that I just had to make mention of it.

In Maggie Stiefvater's Shiver, Grace and Sam found each other.  Now, in Linger, they must fight to be together. For Grace, this means defying her parents and keeping a very dangerous secret about her own well-being. For Sam, this means grappling with his werewolf past . . . and figuring out a way to survive into the future. Add into the mix a new wolf named Cole, whose own past has the potential to destroy the whole pack.  And Isabelle, who already lost her brother to the wolves . . . and is nonetheless drawn to Cole.

At turns harrowing and euphoric, Linger is a spellbinding love story that explores both sides of love -- the light and the dark, the warm and the cold -- in a way you will never forget.

WARNING : Mild Spoilers for Shiver

It's going to be tough for me to read a book this year that I love more than this one.  I loved every word and didn't want it to end. Sam is so heartbreaking in his uncertainty of his cure and Grace has to battle her parents without losing what means the most to her. And Isabelle is still so frustrating, but I love her - Maggie has the ability to make people seem so real and she lets them act in ways that other authors wouldn't dare. And Cole is such a wonderful creation - dark and damaged and destructive. I can't wait for this book to come out so that I can talk to everyone about it.

This is a song Maggie mentioned in her journal and it perfectly captures that cold beauty of her writing - there are so many scenes of delicate, gorgeous description, that I reread them a couple of times:

And Shiver and the other other two books have been optioned by Warner Brothers to possibly be made into films. Who would you cast? My Sam choice is in my icon - Garrett Hedlund.

Truly Divine

  • Dec. 28th, 2009 at 4:04 AM

This is a MUST READ for all. One of the years best!

And how amazing is the cover?

The Dark Divine by Bree Despain:

THE DARK DIVINE is absolutely stunning, amazing and yes, it is truly divine. Bree Despain has created a beautiful, dark and romantic masterpiece. The writing is gorgeous, the mysterious plot is enthralling, the characters are endearing and the love story is breathtaking. It is just phenomenal.

When the sexy, brooding and emotionally damaged Daniel Kalbi returns to his sometown in Minnesota, nobody is more thrilled than Grace Divine. After all, he was her childhood friend as well as her first love. A long time ago, Daniel was nearly part of her family. He was taken in by her father, pastor Divine, when his own father was abusing him. Daniel had finally found a place where he was loved, but it all ended when he suddenly disappeared under strange circumstances. Grace's brother Jude came home one night covered in blood and Daniel was never seen after that. Something happened and he had to have gone somewhere, but Grace never found out the truth.

When Daniel returns, Grace is still drawn to him, but the pull is even stronger and she doesn't know if she can control it. She knows that her brother now seems to hate Daniel and she still doesn't know why. Grace tried to keep her promise to Jude to stay away from him, but she's finding it more difficult to do this every day. The longer he's in town, the more she wants to be near him, even if it means breaking promises and rules. Grace knows that Daniel has had a rough life and she will not leave him alone with his problems. She could be risking more than her status as the pastors daughter because at the same time as Daniel's return, something else has made it's way to town. Something mysterious and sinister. People are disappearing and turning up dead, and there are rumors about monsters circulating. This has happend before but it stopped when Daniel left. Could Daniel be somehow be connected to it? Grace's love for him will either lead to his salvation or her own downfall when she finally discovers what really happened that fateful night years ago.

This story has plenty of twists and turns and it will keep you guessing at every one of them. The relationship between Daniel and Grace will leave you swooning and really hoping that love can conquer all. Daniel is pretty wonderful, too. What a fantastic story this is! It pulls you in, wraps you in softness, pulls at your heart, speeds up your pulse and drops you in a garden of angels and demons. Brilliant! Beautiful! Amazing! Darkly divine! Wow. Just... wow.

Here is the book trailer:

...Would you die tonight for love?...

enjoy!

I LOOOOOVE This book!

Hearts at Stake by Alyxandra Harvey:

So, I'm kind of in love with this book. It's my NEW FAVORITE THING! Hearts at Stake is fun, romantic, action-packed and downright addictive. I can't wait for the next book! This is the start to a must read new series. I enjoyed it SO much, and I really hope that everyone gets themselves a copy immediately.

Solange Drake seemingly has it all. She's got parents who love her, seven older brothers who will do anything to protect her, a best friend named Lucy who is practically her sister and she's about to celebrate her sixteenth birthday. Sounds like life is pretty good, doesn't it? Well, there are a few problems. When she finally turns sixteen, she will also go through a possibly life threatening transformation and become like the rest of her family... a vampire. Not only that, but while she's on the verge of this change every male vamp within smelling distance of her has been intoxicated by her "sweet" sixteen vampiress-to-be pheromones, making life an unwanted rose-and-candy filled disaster. On top of all the birthday stress, she's also found herself to be the target of someones assasination plans because she's seen as a threat to the vampire throne. There is a bounty on her head and both vamps and hunters alike are after it. Her only hope to survive may be to trust one of her enemies, who, by the way, is pretty cute. Her butt-kicking parents, overprotective brothers and tough-as-nails best friend have her back, but there are a lot of people (and things) out there who want her dead. This all may not matter because she may not even survive her transformation. Oh, and Solange has also noticed that her friend Lucy and her brother Nicholas are acting kind of strange, what's up with that? With crazy prophecies, countless enemies and becoming undead there is one thing that's certain. If Solange makes it to sixteen, this is one birthday she will never forget.

Solange and Lucy take turns telling the story as they try to save each other, possibly fall in love and definitely deliver a few punches. I haven't had this much fun with vampires since Buffy!

The Cupcake Queen
by Heather Helper:

This is a sweet and satisfying book with heart and substance. The cover is cute, and quite honestly makes me hungry, but I ended up devouring the book itself...and it was delicious!

Penny Lane (yes, she's named after a Beatles song) has lived in New York City for all her life. When her parents hit a rough patch in their relationship she is forced to move to the small town of Hog's Hollow with her mother, leaving her old life and friends behind. Hog's Hollow is just about as normal as it's name. It's as if the town exists in it's own universe. There is no way Penny will be able to fit in here. She's already made a horrific first impression with the town's Queen Bee and resident mean girl, Charity, involving pink cupcakes from Penny's mother's bakery, Charity's birthday party and a huge mess. Charity has sworn to make Penny's life miserable from this moment on. Little does she know that Penny is already on the brink of misery. She doesn't want to be here in this backwards town. She never asked for this and her parents don't seem to want to listen to anything she says or even want to tell her the truth about what is going on between them.

There are some bright spots in Penny's life though. She did manage to make a few friends in Hog's Hollow. She instantly connected with an odd girl named Tally who is obsessed with professional Rock-Paper-Scissors Competition, cats and revenge. She may need an ally like Tally if things keep going the way they are with Charity and her crew of cronies. Penny also met a great guy named Marcus who loves dogs and seems really nice, but he's got his own personal issues and emotional dammage to deal with. There's also the possibility that he just may be the object of Charity's affection, making him off limits to Penny.

Baking cupcakes, getting revenge, passing French, healing broken hearts, building planets, saving animals and making possible life altering decisions are some of the things Penny will face in only a few short months. Who knew small town life could be so crazy?

I recommend this to fans of Meg Cabot. This is one that younger readers will enjoy as well, and it would be a great choice for those who may not quite be ready for Sarah Dessen. The Cupcake Queen does take on the more serious issue of divorce, but it isn't too heavy for pre-teens. The romance in it is also as sweet as the cupcakes on the cover and it is a charming read with a positive message. It would make a great gift that you could feel good about giving, too.

Just a little, cute cupcake video:

Pretty Dead

  • Dec. 3rd, 2009 at 2:10 AM

Pretty Dead by Francesca Lia Block:

There is just something magical and enthralling about Francesca Lia Block's writing. She is able to pull you into her words and make you feel them reaching out and touching you. Pretty Dead is not a long book, as a matter of fact, I finished it in about two hours, but I hung on every beautiful word and savored every second. I guess I'd compare it to a song written in a minor key with beautiful melodic lyrics, full of pain and sorrow, yet sweet and floating. So, basically, if you like Tori Amos, you should read this book (I had "Little Earthquakes" running through my head while reading it - "Give me life, give me pain, give me my...self again").

This is not a "vampire romance novel" and shouldn't be compared to them at all. While there is a romance involved, it is more of a chronicle of the lonely life of one vampire girl, Charlotte. Even though she seemingly has everything she could possibly ever want, there is still an emptiness inside of her. She was born into this dark world while suffering from immense grief, hoping that becoming a "monster" would somehow ease her pain and suffering. She was changed by a man she thought she loved, given eternal life and eternal beauty. But she finds out that you can't replace one thing with another and hope to feel whole again. Charlotte goes through her life witnessing great beauty and horrific destruction, realizing that this is how life is supposed to be, yet she will never complete that circle herself. The longer she lives, the more of her soul she seems to lose. As Charlotte enters the modern era, she finally meets people who she thinks understand her and she begins to feel more human by the day, but there is still something sinister behind even this transformation. The past is about to come back to haunt her once more, poised to destroy her "perfect" life.

*I would suggest this to more mature readers of at least 16.

If you've never heard "Little Earthquakes" by Tori Amos, you should. She is my hero. Click below to listen:

No Way Out

  • Nov. 23rd, 2009 at 4:05 AM
If you read The Hunger Games and you are looking for something equally as cool to read, I HIGHLY suggest heading to the bookstore and picking up a copy of The Maze Runner by James Dashner.

This is an incredible book. It is a pulse pounding adventure wrapped in a truly intriguiging mystery. It's kind of like The Hunger Games meets Lord Of The Flies. Sci-Fi and adventure fans should take notice of The Maze Runner. It will hold you in it's grip, shake you up and toss you on your behind and you will love every minute of it. Seriously.

Thomas wakes up not knowing a thing about himself, where is he is or how he got there. All he knows is that his name is Thomas and he's in some sort of box that is bringing him somehere. When the doors open he is welcomed into a strange place by a group of boys living on their own. They call themselves Gladers. They have built their own society and even have made up their own sort of slang language. Thomas is quickly informed that they are alone. There are no adults and nobody remembers who they are or where they came from. They have accepted it and are moving on. There is no escape either, they found this out the hard way.

The Gladers have tried everything, including trying to solve the enormous maze that surrounds their make-shift home. This maze is huge and the walls move every day. It is also inhabited by horrifying monsters called Grievers. The Grievers are nothing to be messed with. They are dangerous, deadly and REALLY ugly. The only thing that keeps the Gladers safe is that the Grievers are trapped at night as the maze doors close. Every day the doors re-open and the quest for a way out resumes. They live a life of danger, but at least it's consistant, but things are about to change forever for them when a girl arrives only one day after Thomas. She brings with her a message of doom, but Thomas is sure that he can somehow use this to shake things up and find a way out, once and for all. It will become survival of the fittest, but they are not going to give up without a fight.

THE MAZE RUNNER will keep you on the edge of your seat with the action and it will also keep you guessing as you unravel the mystery of the maze and it's Creators. What is so good about this book is that as you read, you discover the clues and find things out along with Thomas and it makes you feel like you are a part of the story. You feel like you are fighting along side of them and you begin to root for them to make it to the end. Some parts of the story are downright chilling and will leave you gasping for breath, shocked and at a loss for words.

The sequel, The Scorch Trials, is now at the top of my wish list for next year. Too bad it's not out until October of 2010. I CAN'T WAIT!!!

Check out this cool book trailer:

I've Got The Creeps!

  • Oct. 14th, 2009 at 1:59 AM

It's almost Halloween so let's get SPOOKY!

Tombstone Tea by Joanne Dahme:

This is a quick & spooky read that will make a great companion for a cold, dark night. It's not too scary but just the right amount of creepiness with a little history lesson and some quirky ghosts, some of which were actual historical figures. Tombstone Tea takes place in a very real place in Philadelphia, the Laurel Hill Cemetery that overlooks the Schuylkill River (for those who don't live in the SE Pennsylvania area, it is pronounced SKOO-KULL River). I happen to live near this place, and this book has made me want to take a little field trip. DURING THE DAY, that is. There is NO way I will be walking through the gates of this cemetery at night. Ohh, no. Brr...*chills*...

Jessie has recently changed schools and she really wants to fit in. She's spent enough time being different so this time she wants to make an effort to be normal. This sounded like a great plan, but somehow she still finds herself in an odd situation. The girls in her new group of friends dare her to spend the night in a cemetery to prove herself worthy of being a part of their group. Ok, it sounds scary, but Jessie can do this. It's only one night. It can't be that bad, right? Well, this one night is about to change her entire life.

When Jessie enters the cemetery, she finds out that she is not alone. It appears that the place is occupied by actors rehearsing for a "Tombstone Tea" where they are pretending to be the ghosts of the people burried here long ago. She is lead through the graves by a sweet and handsome boy named Paul who claims he works there at night. Together they tour the grounds, visiting the actors and their mausoleums or headstones, enjoying the show. As the night progresses though, Jessie notices that the actors are a little too into their roles and are actually starting to scare her a little bit, especially the one name Jenny. The night is cut short when she comes to a bone-chilling realization. These are not actors after all. They are ghosts, and some of them are not the friendly type.

The story then goes back to when some of them were alive and we find out why they are now permanent residents of the graveyard. We also find out what has caused some of these spirits to be so angry.

When Jessie is ready, she must go back to the cemetery to confront the ghosts and possibly help them to finally move on.

To learn more about the Laurel Hill Cemetery, as well as the other creepy haunts of the Philadelpia area (and there a lot of them), you might want to check out this book, Philadelpia Graveyards and Cemeteries (from Images of America) by Thomas H. Keels. It's kind of spooky but very cool:

Also, this is one of the ghosts in the story. His name was Elisha Kent Kane, and he was a real person. An Arctic explorer who was buried in the Laurel Hill Cemetery:

His actual mausoleum:

Ok, I am TOTALLY creeped out now and I think I need to go watch some cartoons or something...

Happy October!

Kiss This Book

  • Oct. 8th, 2009 at 4:40 AM

I really loved this book. It's got a perfect balance of heartbreak, humor and redemption. Lipstick Apology is a smashing debut by author Jennifer Jabaley, and I look forward to anything else she writes.

Lipstick Apology by Jennifer Jabaley:

All at once, Emily's world comes crashing down around her when her parents are killed in a plane crash. As she watches the news, there is something pulled from the scene of the accident. It is a tray table with the words "EMILY PLEASE FORGIVE ME" written in her mothers lipstick. Not only does Emily not know what this means, but she is thrust into the spotlight with this find. Her grief has become a public phenominon. As soon as the dust settles, Emily is forced to leave her small-town Pennsylvania life and move to New York City to live with her Aunt Jolie, a famous make-up artist. Jolie knows nothing about being a parent. Her life consists of celebrities, parties, take-out dining and hanging out with her best friend Trent, a celebrity hairdresser. It's hard enough for Jolie to deal with the loss of her sister, but now she has to become a mother to Emily.

As Emily deals with her loss, she also must start over in a new school. She had to leave her best friend behind, but the people at her new school,  Darlington High, seem to be pretty accepting and understanding. She even scored herself some new friends and a new boyfriend (who happens to be the hottest, most sought after guy in school). He's not deep, but his eyes sure are, and he's a nice distraction from the tragedy of the past. Her annoying but kind of cute chemistry partner Anthony doesn't think too highly of him, and for some reason, this does worry Emily. There is also the matter of her mother's last words to her, which have been haunting Emily ever since that dreadful day. She wants to find out what they mean, but she's afraid to find out if some secrets should be kept secret. The pain of opening old wounds and possibly making new ones is holding her back from living her life and finding the truth. Emily is falling apart and she may be surprised at who will be there to help her pick up the pieces and put herself back together.

This is a sweet and touching story that made me tear up a bit at the end. The characters are quirky, yet real, and the story has it's ups and downs, just like real life. You will leave this book with a few lessons in life and a good feeling inside your heart. It's funny in parts, sad in others and the rest is wonderful.

Fans of Sarah Dessen and Maureen Johnson will enjoy this book.

Dark Angels

  • Sep. 29th, 2009 at 2:45 AM

The Devil's Kiss
by Sarwat Chadda:

The Devil's Kiss is a dark, exciting and original story that fans of Strange Angels by Lili St. Crow, The Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare and the TV show Supernatural will enjoy. It's got pretty much everything you could ask for in a book. Great characters, forbidden romance, swords and sorcery, creepy creatures and a grand and diabolical evil. The pages will fly quickly as you get sucked into this dangerous and thrilling world. What a rush!

NOBODY messes with Billi SanGreal. That's because ever since she's been able to hold a sword and throw a punch, she's been trained as a warrior to fight against evil. Billi is a modern day member of the Knights Templar. This is actually quite an honor since they don't normally let women into the Order, but since her super tough father is a big shot Templar, they made an exception for her. Billi may know how to knock a demon senseless but she has less luck handling her schoolwork and social life. How can she waste her time hanging out when she knows that there is real evil loose on the streets of London? It's not that she really prefers this lonely and dangerous life, it's just all that she knows. She must fight or die, that is the life of a Templar.

When Billi's childhood friend, Kay, comes back into town from his own training it stirs up a wave of emotions for her. She's angry that he left her, annoyed that he's had it easier than her and jealous that he's getting more respect than her. Yet she's still happy that he has returned and is confused about her feelings towards him. Her life has become such a mess but when she meets a dark and mysterious stranger named Michael things begin to look a little better. He saved her life and he takes her breath away. The precious moments she has away from the Knights Templar make her wish for a normal life, which she knows she can never have. Normal teenagers do have to worry about their over-protective fathers, but Billi's father carries weapons and he knows how to use them. And there is no way she could ever explain to any guy that she kills monsters for a living.

All of Billi's problems may end up only the tip of the iceberg, since they now have to find and fight the Angel of Death before he unleashes a plague that will kill every first born child. This is only the beginning of his nefarious plan. He wants to rain evil upon the world and he will do anything and kill anyone to make it happen. It's up to Billi and the remaining Knights Templar to stop this wicked angel. She must be willing to sacrifice the things she holds dear to stop the destruction and death that is coming their way. She's trained for this her whole life, now it's time to kick this beast back to hell.

I can't wait for the next book, THE DARK GODDESS. Check out his website for lots of cool info about this series:

I also got to meet Sarwat Chadda at Book Expo America and he totally ROCKS!!

Give Up The Ghost

  • Sep. 27th, 2009 at 4:09 AM

Give up the Ghost by Megan Crewe:

GIVE UP THE GHOST is a fantastic debut by author Megan Crewe. Not only is it a ghost story, but it is also an angsty coming of age story. Fans of the supernatural will apprectiate it as well those who lean towards the humans. This book is about fitting in and letting go of grudges and grief. It shows that sometimes people and things go away and we have to learn to accept this and move on with our lives and keep living them. If we don't we will constantly be haunted by the past and never be able to move forward into the future.

Cass used to have friends that were living, but after a falling out she became an outsider. She is mocked and harassed by some and ignored by the rest of her classsmates. It's only fitting that the only people she talks to now are ghosts, especially since she has practically become one socially. It all began with the death of her sister Paige. Paige showed herself to Cass and ever since she's been a regular ghost magnet. This doesn't bother her at all because lately the ghosts are the only ones she feels comfortable around. Besides, nobody else can see them so she's been using them to snoop on her classsmates and teachers to find out all of their dirty little secrets. As far as Cass is concerned, they all deserve to be taken down or at least blackmailed into submission. Now that she's armed with all this information, people will finally leave her alone. Too bad Cass can't hide forever.

One day, as Cass is using some of her dirt to call someone out, she attracts the attention of Tim, the class VP. He figures out her secret and begs for her help in contacting his recently deceased mother. Cass doesn't know how to handle a real, live person. She surely doesn't want people to know about her, so she gives in hoping that Tim will go away once she helps him out. The only problem is that she discovers that Tim may need more than just a little help and a seance wont solve his problems. For some reason she can't just walk away from him. As they get to know each other Cass begins to realize that she hasn't been living and perhaps she should let go of her own bitterness and join the world again. If only she could give up the ghosts of her past as well as the "real" ones she's been spending her time with in the present.

Ashes, Ashes...

  • Sep. 24th, 2009 at 6:49 PM

Read a new twist on the Cinderella story in Ash by Malinda Lo. It is gorgeous, heartbreaking, uplifting, inspiring and magical.

Ash is a lush, elegant and beautifully written retelling of Cinderella. Faeries and magic play a much larger role and they are also much darker. While many components of the original story are still there, the Cinderella of this story, Ash, gets a different kind of ending. It's also a very different theme than the original. In this version, Ash breaks free from the traditional "I'm just a girl who wishes that someday my prince will come" line of thinking and she aspires for true freedom.

The familiar part of the story, in which Ash is orphaned and left under the care of her "wicked" stepmother is only the begining. Ash is mired in grief and tormented by her new family that treats her as if she is a mere servant. She only finds solace in the woods, where she meets a mysterious faery boy named Sidhean. She knows his world is not where she belongs, but it is the only place she feels safe. At least until she crosses the path of the Kings Royal Huntress, Kaisa. The two form a bond and become fast friends with the possibility of more. Ash also knows that she does not belong with her either, but it does not stop her from asking for a few magical favors of Sidhean and the faeries, regardless of the consequences. With a whole new outlook on life, Ash now must decide if she is strong enough to change her bleak future.

This is a story about standing up for yourself and realizing that one person's happy ending is another's prison. Ash teaches us to be brave in the face of adversity, no matter how difficult and oppressive the cirumstances may be. It is about being who you are and finding your own place in this world. All with a gorgeous and magical backdrop. Brava!

ABC YA Book meme

  • Sep. 23rd, 2009 at 3:48 PM

I thought this would be fun and I just wanted to take the opportunity to share some of my favorite books! If anyone would like to do this I would love to hear what your favorites are. Have you read any of these? Do you have anything to add? I haven't read everything, so I'd love to get more recommendations! It could still make my list eventually.

For this meme, you list a favorite book that starts with each letter of the alphabet. If you don’t have a book for a letter (such as Z or X) than you can substitute a favorite book that simply has that letter in the title (ex. MaZe Runner or The Lost Queen). For this version of the meme, it will be Young Adult books.

This is a difficult task to fulfill, because obviously some letters, like S and T, have many books that might be favorites, whereas others, like Q and X are unlikely to present you with difficulties making a choice.

*My Notes*

I will cheat. For some letters I COULD NOT choose only one book. I also counted entire series as one letter (Mortal Instruments Series = City of Bones, City of Ashes & City of Glass). Also, if the book title starts with "the", I left it out. Even with all these books I STILL feel like I've left thigs out!!

I Wish...

  • Sep. 14th, 2009 at 4:39 PM

I wish for everyone to read this lovely book!

As You Wish by Jackson Pearce:

As You Wish is such a sweet, funny and wonderful book and I really enjoyed reading it. Just a note to future readers, if you are reading this book in a public place, you are not invisible. If you laugh out loud, people can hear you. I found that out the hard way. You know when you're sitting alone and you let out a chuckle that you have to quickly turn into a cough so you don't look crazy?Well, I don't think it works. I still think I may have looked crazy. Oh, well. I adored the book, that's what counts.

Viola and Lawrence have been best friends since childhood and have even attempted to move their relationship further by dating. Viola loved Lawrence, but he recently discovered something about himself that forces them to break up. They are still best friends, but after the break up, Viola feels like she's missing something. She begins to feel invisible and deperately wishes that she can belong to something again. She doesn't know to who, what or why, she just, well, wishes for it. One day, all of her wishing gets the attention of Jinn, an actual jinn. You know, the kind that grant wishes and are not supposed to exisit except that there is one standing right in front of her? After Viola gets over the initial shock of the situation (and the fact that this Jinn guy is pretty hot), she's left with a big decision. What does she REALLY want?

Jinn is just your ordinary, average, everyday, wish granting jinn (also known as a genie, but he's not blue and he doesn't sing or live in a bottle). He comes from a place called Caliban, where everything is perfect, there is nothing to worry about and he never ages. As a jinn, he must make frequent trips to the mortal world to fulfill his duties to desperate humans, and boy does he have some insane stories abut that. Whenever he takes a trip to the mortal world he ages while he's there, as if he's a human, so you can understand that he would want to get in, grant the wishes and get out ASAP. Normally, this is not a problem, but when he ends up with a girl named Viola as his master, things don't go very smoothly. This girl wanted him to appear so badly yet she refuses to make her wishes. She claims she wants to think about it, all while Jinn is stuck here actually FEELING time slip away (as you can imagine, he's become a bit neurotic after all these trips away from Caliban). What's a jinn to do when he can't grant wishes? He's just going to have to wait it out.

As Viola and Jinn spend more time with each other, they become closer than either of them have ever been to another... being. Viola wanted to feel whole again, and now she realizes that if she wishes for this, Jinn will go away and leave an even bigger hole in her life. She can't wish for him to stay, she can't even wish at all. Along with all this drama, Jinn has gotten himslef into some pretty big trouble with the Ancients and they want him home and punished. They are from two different worlds, but they are sure that they belong together. Even a wish can't get them out of this mess, or can it? See for yourself as Viola and Jinn tell their story.

10/06/09 - Leviathan

  • Sep. 9th, 2009 at 4:36 PM

Woo Hoo! Now that's what I'm talkin' about! This is without a doubt, the coolest book I've read all year. Leviathan is a fun, imaginative, thrilling and intelligent steampunk adventure filled with quirky characters, massive machines and awe inspiring beasts. It is set in the Victorian Era, yet it still feels like a crazy-fantastic futuristic voyage into the unkown. Along with the story, are stunning illustrations that only ignite the sparks of imagination further. Any fan of adventure, history or fantasy will find thenselves lost in this alternate world of intrigue and excitement. I also recommend it to fans of anime or manga (especially those who liked Fullmetal Alchemist).

The year is 1914. Not our 1914, but an alternate one. Some things are the same, but others are quite different. There is still a great war on the horizon, but the machines that are fighting in it are not ones we are familiar with. There are two factions battling each other. The Clankers of Austria-Hungary and Germany who fight with metal machines that "walk" and The Darwinists of British Empire and France who's weapons are living organisms created by man. This is the beginning of the story...

Aleksander is a Clanker. Not just any ordinary one though. He is a Prince and the sole heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne. His sheltere life is about to take a dangerous and tragic turn when his parents, Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his "common" wife, are murdered in order to start a war. He and a few loyal men must steal away into the night in a "Stormwalker" before someone can end his own life. All the years he has been training with weapons and machines will certainly help him, but a life on the run in the middle of battle is going to take a lot of courage, and he must trust his instincts as well as his crew if they want to make it to safety.

Deryn is a Darwinist. She has had a love of aeronautics all her life which began with her now deceased father. She wants to join the British Air Service but girls are not allowed to do this. Her only option is to dress as a boy and become Dylan if she wants to accomplish her dreams. There is always a risk that her secret will be discovered, but it's worth it to be able to fly. Deryn, now Dylan is about to embark on the adventure of a lifetime when she finds herself aboard the famous living airship Leviathan. In size it rivals the most grand Zeppelins of the Clankers, yet it is it's own amazing ecosystem, complete with strange creatures Deryn has never encountered before. As majesctic and amazing as this voyage may seem, there is still a war and things are about to get very interesting. The Leviathan picks up a new passenger, a strange woman scientist with some mysterious cargo and on odd yet friendly pet, a (sadly, now extinct) Tasmanian Tiger. Her presence marks the beginning of a dangerous journey and soon the paths of Deryn, the Darwinist, and Alek, the Clanker, will soon meet. They are about to discover that even though they come from different words, they have a lot in common.

If you are looking for intrigue, explosions, action, adventure and weird science, I highly recommend this book to you. Or, if you are looking for a great story to become immersed in, this is also for you.

Another thing I took from this book is the importance of conservation and protecting the species of animals that are living on the planet today. The Tasmanian Tiger, or Thylacine, is no longer around. It is now extcinct. Gone. Exctinction is forever. There is no science that can bring it back. We must do what we can to stop this from happening to other animals. Could you imagine a world without Tigers, or Pandas? Where they are only a story from the past, or a youtube tribute video? That makes me incredibly sad. There are people out there who are trying to help, and we can all be a small part of that. We don't have to go to the jungle. It can be as small as spreading awareness. Here is a beautiful tribute to the Tasmanian Tiger:

Wicked Awesome

  • Sep. 1st, 2009 at 2:09 AM
It's happened again. I've fallen in love with a book. The object of my affection is Another Faust by Daniel and Dina Nayeri. You can't see me doing a happy dance, but trust me, I am. I loved it so much that I felt like it needed a soundtrack. Yeah. I'm that dorky. But hey, the music is great. But the book is wicked awesome!  After the review I will post my unofficial playlist. Enjoy!

And don't forget to vist the Michelle's Minions message board. This review and many more, plus lots of other bookish fun can be found there:   http://z3.invisionfree.com/Michelles_Minions/

Another Faust by Daniel and Dina Nayeri:

Another Faust is so far one of my favorite books this year. This is a welcome and darkly delicious change of pace that sets itself apart from the pack. I really just loved the book. This is one I will remember out of the hundred (or more) that I've read this year.

The story begins with five children from around the world. They are all different, but they do have one thing in common. They all want something and would do absolutely anything to get it. Each one has a dark spot that appears over his or her heart. When a mysterious woman appears and offers them a deal that they simply cannot refuse, they disappear from the lives they so despise.

Five years later, Belle, Bice, Christian, Valentin and Victoria Faust reappear as teenagers in Manhattan and make quite a debut amongst the rich and elite. Madame Vileroy, the woman who offered them their deals is now their governess. As far as the world knows, she is a kind woman who adopted five orhpaned children, who grew into five extra-ordinarily talented and attractive teenagers. Nobody sees them as anything but special, which is exactly what the Faust's had bargained for. But being special is never enough for them. They want to be the best. Each one has been given a gift by Madame Vileroy which they have been using to "cheat" for quite some time. As they learn more about what they are capable of, they become increasingly addicted to using thier gifts, and are constantly asking for more. With each new bargain, they give up more pieces of their souls and become more dependent on Madame Vileroy. As she plays her own game with them they all slowly begin to lose their grip on reality and morality. At least until two of them figure out the evil truth about what has been going on all these years. They must be willing to give up everything they were given and face the consequences of making a deal with the devil if they ever hope to be free.

Everyone has a price. What's yours? Would you be beautiful? Would you be brilliant? Would you be strong? Or perhaps be able to control time? Consider the possibilities. Imagine what you could do. What would you be willing to do if you were offered your hearts desire?

This is a smart, witty, dark and wicked story that makes you think. It actually made me wonder about the price of my own soul. I came up with one, but when I saw how it affected Bice, well, let's just say my skin began to crawl. I thought, "I take it back! I take it back!." Hmm...maybe the things that you think you want are not the things they appear to be. There is always a catch, but it's up to you to decide if it's worth it.

Unicorns are the new zombies

  • Aug. 22nd, 2009 at 9:26 PM
I need this book now, lol.  I thought I'd share the hilarious book trailer and the link to what to do when you cross paths with a dreaded unicorn.  Comment below and let us know what you think and if there are any book trailers you enjoy.  I don't think it's on youtube, but Entertainment Weekly has the cutest video ever with Libba Bray in a cow suit talking about Going Bovine - EW's Shelf Life

Rampant
by Diane Peterfreund - Due out August 25th.

Forget everything you ever knew about unicorns…

The sparkly, innocent creatures of lore are a myth. Real unicorns are venomous, man-eating monsters with huge fangs and razor-sharp horns. And they can only be killed by virgin descendants of Alexander the Great.

Fortunately, unicorns have been extinct for a hundred and fifty years.

Or not.

Astrid Llewelyn has always scoffed ather eccentric mother’s stories about killer unicorns. But when one of the monsters attacks her boyfriend in the woods – thereby ruining any chance of him taking her to prom – Astrid learns that unicorns are real and dangerous, and she has a family legacy to uphold. Her mother packs her off to Rome to train as a unicorn hunter at the ancient cloisters the hunters have used for centuries.

However, at the cloisters, all is not what is seems. Outside, the unicorns wait to attack. And within, Astrid faces other, unexpected threats: from crumbling, bone-covered walls that vibrate with a terrible power to the hidden agendas of her fellow hunters to – perhaps most dangerously of all – her growing attraction to a handsome art student… and a relationship that could jeopardize everything.
