Fairy Girl

  • Jul. 11th, 2008 at 2:03 AM

I just finished a wonderful book. If you are in the mood for a little magic, I highly suggest  Wings: A Fairy Tale by E.D. Baker.

This book is just pure fun and it will leave you enchanted. Wings is a lovely modern fairy tale inspired by A Midsummer Night's Dream.

Bookaholics Anonymous

  • Jul. 5th, 2008 at 11:06 PM
I've had this list for a while and I'm not sure where I got it from originally, but I thought it would be fun to share with you guys.

You know you're a bookaholic when ...

You walk into someone's house and you have to check the impulse to ignore them and immediately begin scoping out their bookshelves. A corollary: You walk into a house with no visible reading material anywhere and you immediately get nervous.

You reject purses because their book-holding potential is low.

You choose the exercise bike (or elliptical) over other nominally more appealing forms of exercise, because it offers the opportunity to read.

You're stressed out on vacation because there are too many people around (extended family) and they won't leave you alone to read.

You feel naked if you don't bring a book to some social event (baseball game, dinner with friends, church, jury duty).

You get irritated with your spouse or family member when they want to talk to you and you're right in the middle of a particularly good part of the book you're reading.

You feel the need to ask those who say they don't like reading "Don't you get bored?"

You've memorized your library card number from always typing it in online to request a book.

The librarian at the branch library you go to recognizes you and knows what books you like to read.

You take two books with you on a 5-day trip and return with thirteen.

So do you guys have anything to add to the list?  I know Michelle does. She brought a book with her to the largest trade show in the country (BookExpo America) just in case there wasn't anything to read.

A World of Her Own

  • Jun. 29th, 2008 at 5:17 PM
Last month I was at Book Expo America in Los Angeles, CA. Before everthig got underway, I was scanning my program and I came across an advertisement for The Otherworldlies by Jennifer Anne Kogler. I have to say, I was quite intrigued by it. So when it came time, I got in line to get my copy and get it signed. Now I wish I could have read it before I saw her. Seriously, this book is great! It's probably for the best, because I may have scared her with my enthusiasm. I would have tried to be cool and say something profound and it would have come out as "you uh... totally rock!". Or something like that. After all, when it was my turn to meet Richelle Mead, author of the Vampire Academy books, I geeked out and told her that I loved her. Oh, well. I really did mean it. Anyway, here is my review of:

The Otherworldlies by Jennifer Anne Kogler:

If you are looking for something to wake up your imagination, The Otherworldlies is the way to go. Kogler has created a richly detailed world inhabited by incredible characters that you can't help but love.

Lady and the Vamps

Well my friends, I'm here to report that I have dusted off a podium in my pantheon of "the best books ever". It has been filled with a truly amazing book. I would love to share it with you.

Evernight by Claudia Gray:

Evernight by Claudia Gray has it all. Vampires, romance, excitement, history, betrayal, danger and shocking surprises. I was hopelessly and happily entranced by Gray's beautiful writing, gorgeous gothic settings and instantly likeable characters. I read each page as if under a spell, ready to fall gracefully into the books lush pages and explore the amazing world that Gray has created.

I will be this books champion.

By the way, before you read this book, take a close look at this painting, Gustav Klimt's "The Kiss".

Zombies Need Love, Too

  • Jun. 2nd, 2008 at 12:22 AM
Now for my pick for the "must read book of the month". It is Generation Dead by Daniel Waters. It's a zombie love story mixed with teen angst and humor. And I loved it!

Smart Girls Strike Back

  • May. 21st, 2008 at 3:29 PM
So I've been reading a lot lately, shocking surprise I know *sarcasm*. Unfortunately, I've found myself away from the computer more than usual over the past few weeks so I haven't been able to share these great books with all of you. I figured I would start off with a stand-out. I give you, The Disreputable History of Frankie Landau-Banks by E. Lockhart .

The Disreputable History of Frankie Landau-Banks by E. Lockhart:

Disreputable History of Frankie Landau-Banks, The

The best word to describe this book would be brilliant. Ok, maybe two words. Absolutely brilliant. This is the story of how an often underestimated girl became a criminal mastermind.

I'll be back soon with more reviews!

The Host

  • Apr. 28th, 2008 at 5:02 PM
I finished reading my advanced readers copy of  The Host. And it is phenominal! Wonderful! Without giving anything away, I will try to give you a "review". Since I don't want to say anyhing about the story itself, I will give my opinion. Don't worry, there are no spoilers, but if you don't want to know anything about it until it's release, that's ok. I understand. That's why it is under the lj cut. I would like to share my thoughts, though.

So, you know where to be on May 6th when it is released.

Who Needs the Prom? Not Cindy!

So in the spirit of the season, I bring you Cindy Ella by Robin Palmer. This is a delightful and funny book that will enchant and amuse readers of all ages.

Shadowhunters in the Wild

  • Apr. 9th, 2008 at 12:35 PM

Michelle and I thought it would be fun to post pictures of the various displays we have through the store for City of Bones and City of Ashes.

Oh, and for anyone who has been dying to know, this is Michelle.  It's an icon I made for her to use on here.

And now that I've embarrassed her, it's time for the pictures.

I know a bunch of you have finished the second one.  Let's use the comments area to get a discussion going.  Share your thoughts, observations, and predictions.  Oh, and Jace fangirling is welcome as well, lol.  Not that I would know anything about that *_^

My Favorite Thing

  • Mar. 27th, 2008 at 11:05 PM
I know, I know. I say "it's my favorite" all the time, but I really mean it for this one. I've held my excitement in far too long about City of Ashes by Cassandra Clare. City of Ashes is book two in The Mortal Instruments trilogy, and I was such a good girl waiting for it to arrive. When it finally did arrive last week, I nearly mauled the poor delivery man and had to be held back like a crazed animal. Opening that first box containing those shiny books was like opening the doors to Fort Knox, for me. I bathed in the glow of Clary's fiery red hair for a moment, then I rushed to make several phone calls to allert the masses of it's arrival. I was greeted with many screams of delight and excitement over the phone. Then, I had to wait until I was finished work to crack open my own lovely prize. Now, book one of The Mortal Instruments trilogy, City of Bones, was my absolute favorite book of last year. After I read it I became City of Bones cheerleader #1. So you see how dificult it was to wait even an extra minute before reading the next installment.

With all of this anticipation, could City of Ashes live up to it? The answer is....

YES!!!!

City of Ashes by Cassandra Clare:

                                  City of Ashes (Mortal Instruments)

Once my hands stopped shaking enough to hold the book still, I was ready to get back to the world of Shadowhunters, Downworlders and Warlocks.

What I am about to do now is have a little fun. Remember that this is only for fun and not in any way a real thing. In my own little mind I have been creating a "dream cast" for a City of Bones movie (with the help of [info]maxiekatt2 , thank you for finding the pictures). To my knowledge, there is no movie in the works, but a girl can dream, can't she? This is how my movie would be cast:

Now go read these books!

To Sleep...To Dream...

  • Mar. 3rd, 2008 at 11:51 PM
Wow. Wow. Did I already say Wow? That was my reaction to  Wake by Lisa McMann. What a fantastic debut novel. I could not DREAM a better book. I was both blown away and taken aback. If Lisa McMann finds her way here and reads this, I hope she won't be offended that I want to bronze her and put her in my own personal hall of awesome authors. Seriously, wow.

Don't Call Me "Princess"!

  • Feb. 7th, 2008 at 2:29 AM

Geez, I'm sorry I've been away so long.   I've been busy and I'm also suffering from low motivation.  I've read plenty of books and there are many more due to hit the shelves soon.  Hopefully this will get the ball rolling so I can get back to posting regularly again.

Lately, I've been in a fairy tale kind of mood.  Fairy tales with tough girls.  Here are the results:

Lot's of new books are coming soon!!  I'll be back...

What it Feels Like to be a Ghost

  • Jan. 2nd, 2008 at 3:21 PM
Well, the presents are unwrapped and confetti has fallen.  Now we begin a new year, with many new books.  Now that the mayhem of the season has passed, I can get back to reading.  In the new year I resolve to do much more of it, and I will keep everyone updated on my progress right here.

I will begin with a spooky book that you may want to read with the lights on and the closet door securely closed.  It is Project 17 by Laurie Faria Stolarz.

I just thought I would pop by to let you know that I came across an interview of Laurie Faria Stolarz.  Her new book Project 17 will be released this month.  I am so excited about this one!  I loved her previous work (Blue is for Nightmares series, Bleed).   She also talks about her next series here.  Yay!  Another book to look forward to!  If you are as excited as I am about Project 17, check this interview out.  If you have not read her books yet, get to a bookstore, immediately!

Outcasts and Wanderers

  • Dec. 14th, 2007 at 2:59 AM
The holiday shopping season continues to keep me very busy, but I made time to read two very cool books.  The Outcasts by L.S. Matthews and The Night Wanderer: A Native Gothic Novel by Drew Hayden Taylor.

Before I get to the reviews, I would like to share a few things.

First, there is a fantasic interview with Libba Bray that she had posted on her livejournal.  As you may know, her latest book The Sweet Far Thing will be  released on December 26th.  I am counting down the seconds!!  I thought I would post the link to her interview.  And by the way Libba, I actually do have a shelf I would call "Vicrorian Fever-Dream Glam-Rock Opera with Beasties"!! :

Next I thought I would give you a peek at the books you have to look forward to in 2008 and the remainder of this year.  This is my own compiled list.  I could not fit everything on it, but I will constantly update it as new books are announced and the ones on the list become available:

My last gift to you today is something a little diferent.  It has nothing to do with books, well perhaps manga.  This is where I get some of my super-cool hats.  Click on the animal to see all the fuzzy goodness.  Happy Holidays!!
