On Thursday, Michael Johns will perform live for a worldwide audience in the millions when he appears on the grand final of American Idol. This Perth-born star in the making has come a long way from grafting a living in US bars and living out of his car.

Johns’ fan club mirrors LA’s A-List

The Michael Johns dream lives on. At an intimate dinner at Café Sydney with his wife and parents, Johns told S that even though he was eliminated from American Idol in eighth place after performing the Aerosmith song Dream On, the opportunity to sing that song was incredible.

The band’s lead singer, Steven Tyler, is such a fan of Johns’ work that he personally authorised the song to be used on the show.
Johns said the producers were shocked because they had approached Tyler for years, with no luck. Tyler told them he would only allow it be used if it was sung by Johns.

It’s only part of the amazing ride that Johns has been on. The Perth artist has been shot into the showbiz stratosphere after 35 million people watched him on American Idol every week.
Celebrities including Rob Lowe, couples Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban, and Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher have fallen over themselves to meet him and express their disgust over his shock exit.
Dolly Parton is also a fan. After he sang one of her songs, she whispered to him, “You have a great career ahead of you and I’d like to write with you and maybe do a duet”.

He said he was blown away. [He also said she “smelt really, really nice!”]

Last night, Johns performed a song at Ellen Degeneres’ 50^th Birthday Party in Los Angeles. He’s been on her show twice already and the two get along like a house on fire.

Today he’s taking part in Brit Week in LA [an English version of G’Day LA]. “I’m taking part in a celebrity soccer match – England versus the rest of the world. I’ll be playing with people like Anthony LaPaglia and up again David Beckham and Gordon Ramsay”, he said.

Also on the English team is American Idol executive producer Nigel Lythgoe. “I’m so going to hip check Nigel” he laughed.
