English Translation of a Shinsengumi Novel

"Moe Yo Ken" -- the samurai epic chronicling the life of Hijikata Toshizou, the Vice-Captain of the Shinsengumi in the last days of the Tokugawa Period.

This book is full of romance, epic duels, and lots of history concerning the Bakumatsu, so if any of that is of interest to you, I'm sure you'll enjoy it. Also, this book does not pull its punches, so be prepared for a darker, grittier Japan than you might be used to. Here's a sample from the first chapter:

As he made his way out of the main town, an acquaintance called out to him from the fields.
"Hey, Toshi, where are you going?"
    He didn't answer, though.
It's not like he could say that he was going to rape a woman.
Tonight was the Rokusha Myoujin Ceremony. In more colloquial terms, it was known as the Darkness Festival.
Toshizou's mission tonight was to take advantage of the darkness during the festival and sneak in. There, he would strip off the kimono of one of the girls visiting the shrine, push her down, and violate her. Then, he would take off his own yukata and lay it across the grass, moist with evening dew, to keep the woman from getting wet as she slept. The reason he was wearing a judo gi was for preparation in case a fight broke out between any male companions.
    Toshizou wasn't the only criminal.
That was the nature of the festival.

The story is located here: "http://moeyoken.blogspot.com."

Hope you enjoy the story. Please leave a comment and let me know what you think.

If someone could just kindly point me in the right direction

I've looked over Amazon.com and look through Borders, to find books on the Shinsengumi.  I've only been able to find only one.

"Shinsengumi, The Shogun's Last Samurai Corps" by Romulus Hillsborough.

Are there any other books about the group in English?  Books don't do me much good, if I can't read them.  ^_^

Also, if ever I decide to try to make the uniform, any suggestions for patterns and material?

If this has been posted before here, just point out where it is.

Thanks!

Hello

Just wanted to say hello.
I read through your web site, so much better and more detailed than wiki. Thank you for that. I'm afraid that I can't add anything useful. I'm fairly new to all of this and still feeling my way around but I do like reading about the actual history.
Looking forward to more,
darkokita

Matters of the Heart Pt. 5!!

Hi all! Here's another part of the fic for anyone's who's still reading. ^^;;;; A few author's notes yet again. ^^;;

Kamuro: an Oiran's apprentices.

Handkercheifs and/or Fans: Oiran and Geisha would give these to those special clients that they thought they were special and really cared for. Granted I'm remembering this stuff correctly. ^^;;; Oh it has been such a long while since I've studied up on this hahahaha!

Matters of the Heart Pt. 4

Well.... I hope this doesn't turn out too badly... It does have more character development in it I think... Though towards the end it does get a little dark I suppose... After all no one really knows what goes on in the Karyukai [Willow and flower world] of the geisha and the oiran... Enjoy!

Matters of the Heart Pt. 3!

A few author's notes before you start.

Oiran: one of the highest class of prostitutes in Shimabara. She was very expensive and very popular until the rise of the geisha. The geisha that came around after were cheaper and more accessible to the common person. I don't really know when the Oiran's popularity ended and when the geisha became popular, but since Peace Maker mentions an oiran more [aka Akesato] than a geisha, then I'm playing it safe and using the oiran and the way she works.

Basically, she was a prostitute that knew the entertaining tricks of the geisha, her rise in the ranks usually depended on her beauty and character, and like the geisha, she was a popular muse of the writers, painters, and poets of the time. She also had the luxury of choosing her own lover. If she got famous enough and made the tayuu status, she could only then be patronized by the daimyo. To use her services, she had to be formally invited to a party or so. There were no casual visitors allowed.

A new friend who was editing this for me mentioned that Okita's behavior was quite "daring." I edited it to hopefully make it a little more understandable. Hopefully, I have not totally screwed up anyone's character. Now remember, I heart constructive critisms with logical reasoning, but if you're gonna be flaming me for the sake of flaming me, then I kindly ask you disregard this post. :D Enjoy!

Matters of the Heart Pt. 2!!

Hope you like this. I did a lot of editing to it compared to the original. It's got more details and a bit more character development. A few author's notes before hand though:

An Omiai is a Japanese arranged marriage ceremony where the potential newlyweds meet for the first time and a few times socially through a go-between or a match maker to see if they are compatible for marriage, etc.

Translations of various Japanese words are in parenthesis of the text. Another author's note is already in there regarding the issue of the nape of one's neck. But if you miss it, then I'll tell you here. For some reason, the Japanese find that part erotic. So in modern day terms: staring at the nape of one's neck = looking at someone's breasts. Or something like it. XD

Enjoy!

P.S. I may be biased, but whenever I wear a kimono I can't help but feel like my hips are slightly swaying. Can anyone relate? It's probably because skirt part of a girl's kimono is sooo tight. :\

Here's the fic I wrote about for those that want to read it! :D Enjoy??

I based this fic off an r.p. that was inspired by an old record that Okita was in love with the daughter of a doctor/family with some medical background. Of course not much is known about this girl except for the fact that she MAY have been the one in a strange grave marked "Okita's relation" granted that grave is not a sister or so. So, hoping that you will all bear with me, I will unfortunately have to take some "creative liberty" on this issue. Otherwise, I promise to try and keep true to the show, to the history, and to the Japanese culture.

Hi All!!

I found the lovely and very helpful Shinsengumi site Shinsengumi no Makoto thanks to Google and was referred to it by the link to this LJ Community! I ♥ the Shinsengumi, and my favorite Shinsengumi anime has definitely got to be Peace Maker Kurogane. But I was wondering, I was thinking of posting an old Shinsengumi fic here from Peace Maker Kurogane that was inspired by old records stating that Okita may have dated and loved a daughter of a doctor/came from a family with medical background and a slight rpg. I wanted to post it to get critiques on my writing skills and character development for original characters and characters already in the Peace Maker show. Well... If someone is willing to give a listen/read of it, let me know! Thanks!

P.S. That one girl from Peace Maker that seemed to really like Okita from the one episode.. Does anyone remember her name? I always thought they would be such a cute couple, but i can't remember her name! ack!

Shinsengumi!! Hijikata Toshizô saigo no ichi-nichi

The title is certainly a mouthful! Would anyone happen to know where to find it, or if it's out? I believe it's either a mini-series or a movie that is basically tying up the (numerous) loose ends left by the original series Shinsengumi!

We all know the story, but darnit, I wanna see!

It's dated 2006, and I can find the Japanese versions, but I'm not sure I want to order something I can't understand much of...or even be able to watch. XD

Any information (downloadable torrents, sites that sell it etc.) would be much appreciated.

Also, a big thanks to being pointed in the direction of the torrents for Shinsengumi! I finally got to watch the end of the Ikeda-ya episode. *glee*

Ikemen Shinsengumi

How many times have I complained about Shinsengumi casting? That a lot of the movies about the Shinsengumi are cast with actors –way- older than the actual guys were? I think NHK did pretty well in casting which was a nice change. Not that I have anything against older actors, they are I guess more experienced but once in a while I do like to see them younger. Call it a preference, maybe it’s even a shallow one. That’s one reason my Jitsuroku Shinsengumi is still sitting by the VCR untouched because I still have other Shinsengumi stuff to fangirl about!

So now I bring to you “Ikemen Shinsengumi” by Toei. I don’t know much about it, I’m still deciphering what the pamphlet that came with the DVD is saying. I do know that Ikemen Shinsengumi’s cast was from “Mask Rider 555”. From what I gather from the brief intro the makers said that because of the current popularity of the Bakumatsu era and the Warring States period, they wanted to bring Ikemen Shinsengumi to younger audience who would recognize the cast from Mask Rider. It was a way of promoting the past. Hey I don’t mind it at all! Actually I’m kind of thankful.

Update RK: Enjou Kyoto Rinne

I finally got it! I actually got it last week but I've been distracted. Anyway I posted the ps2 manual in the archive section in my website. Linky...I've only played a little bit but I can confirm that Aoshi at the start is not available from play but the manual shows he is so he either come in later or is an unlockable character. The game allows you to choose kenshin, saito or sano's storyline. I do not know whether it merges later on. I've only had like 15 minutes of game play in.

Controls? It's better than the ps1 fighting game although there is still a bit of button mashing. Kenshin and Sano are relatively easy to control, the hardest I've played is Saitou so far. His gatotsu is -hard- to execute accurately. He seems more "rounded" though such that he uses virtually all movements (kendo and juijitsu) and they seem fluid. I definitely think that Kenshin was given the best sword technique (not surprising) and Sano well strength but he seems slower.

So far I liked it. It's like reliving the Kyoto arc all over again except this time more interactive. The voice acting is pretty good although a bit "low". I particularly found Sano's and Saitou's voice acting better than Kenshin only because Kenshin's lips keep on moving out of sync with his voice actor. boo. But other than that it looks awesome. I wish I had time to play it more.

So far I've played
Kenshin vs Jin'e
Saitou vs Kenshin
Sano vs Kenshin

PMK fanfic

Hello everybody!
I have a PMK fanfic for you. My boyfriend was so nice to translate it.
The ff takes place in 1853. After a long days work Hijikata is looking forward to visit the temple matsuri with his best friend for having fun and meeting girls. But what´s this? Souji comes, too?
Here the story goes..

Link to anyone with the ability to read Kanji..

Um...I was going to try and  see if Babelfish had the ability to translate the bios I found but it came out with a bunch of gibberish, as usual, so if anyone who reads kanji who likes to look up stuff wants to check this out, unless you haven't seen it already, can you tell me what it says at least for the second paragraph. Its the one that talks about guns and practices and stuff that the kanji dictionary I had didn't have.

Its...

Shinsengumi in the Media...

I've seen other posts made earlier about the various places to find the shows/movies, and I've found a few good places! If this isn't allowed, just delete my post. :)

www.yesasia.com sells darn near everything, but it's pricey.

"Mibu Gishi Den" can be bought off of Amazon.com, but it's listed as "When the Last Sword is Drawn", and is a Region 1 DVD with English subs. You can find a copy for as low as about 14.00 USD.

"Shinsengumi Keppuroku" and the NHK Taiga version "Shinsengumi!" are hard to find in boxsets with English subs. However, if you've no qualms with a fansubbed version (both of which are good), simply search on Google or Yahoo! search engines for someone called Curious Violet. On her site, you can find both series on good quality DVD's, along with others, for about 6-8 USD/disc.
