| About: | Keen aficionados of any phenomenon such as authors, hobbies, ideologies, genres or fashions can collectively manifest as fandom. Fans typically are interested in even minor details of the object of their fandom; this is what differentiates them from those with only casual interest. The objects of fandom are typically artistic, sporting or entertainment related. For example, it would not be usual to refer to an accountant who is really interested in the details of accounting to be a "fan" of accounting. Fandom can also refer to the community of fans (usually online) who all share a fandom. These communities are often online, especially for less well known source material, but can also exist in the real world. "That forum is the biggest in the fandom" - Wikipedia This community is about the philosophy of fandom as seen by fans. We have a unique opportunity to analyse and create discourse on our community. It is intended as an attempt to answer the question "Why fandom?" or "What makes fandom so appealling?" Possible topics include: Is fandom objectification? What is the appeal of slash? Are we just privileging one job (eg. actor) over another (eg. cashier)? Why are there so many women in fandom? Etc. Rules: Try to be nice. Always try back up what you say with examples/facts/etc. Don't flame. Discussion is important and the goal but there is no need to be cruel. Attack ideas not people and all that jazz. Spelling and grammar are your friends. Present ideas and information first then open it up to discussion. Don't just ask people how they feel about something without offering your opinion and whatever information/examples you can. It's fine if you're trying to write an essay and want to have other opinions but we need you to talk about what you're doing and why and tell us how you feel or what your concerns are.
