Gladrags Sale [26 Jun 2009|08:28pm]

spokenonlyonce
Hey all,

Some of you might use gladrags reusable menstrual products, and I thought you might like to know they're having a big sale--40% off all color reusable pad three-packs and menstrual cup kits through Saturday at midnight (they don't specify a time zone, but I would guess US Eastern to be safe). The coupon code is FB0609 or TW0609.

It's part of a promotion to get you to join their Facebook page and Twitter page so you might want to do that as well. (I'm not affiliated with them, I just feel kind of bad posting their coupon codes without also giving the plug for their FB/Twitter :)

Moxie [04 Apr 2009|02:19am]

jadea_faith
There's a new tampon brand here in the UK called Moxie from Australia. They have very pretty boxes which have some serious shelf appeal, hell even I've been tempted. They make a big deal about making periods pretty, great that's menstrual positive, and they seem to be more small and women run, but they are still commercial tampons. Just when we are seeing more organic brands and menstrual cups in high street stores, here's another tampon brand with serious pulling power. I've emailed them asking about manufacturing, we'll see what they say. Opinions?

PMS reminder service for men a hit

Alison Stephenson
January 29, 2009 05:00pm

MEN sick of copping a monthly serve have signed up for an online reminder service that warns when pre-menstrual syndrome is about to hit their partner.

PMSBuddy.com, the brainchild of a 28-year-old bloke whose mates were too often in cycle-related strife, is designed for men who have a darling of a partner for three weeks of the month – and a demon for the rest.

The reminders include pithy messages of encouragement such as “She’s on yellow - tread carefully, fella” - as well as tips for how men can mitigate the damage.

It tells men never to ask if a woman has Pre Menstrual Syndrome, and if all else fails to buy flowers, deemed to be "kryptonite to PMS."

What do you think? I'm not sure if i am amused or annoyed.

Ignorance is Stupid [30 Dec 2008|09:24am]

trinserengel
I recently posted a question on Yahoo Answers in the women's health section.  I was asking women what kind of fabric they thought would be best for cloth pads.  I hoping to catch some cloth pad users.

To my surprise (sort of) I got four answers:
  • The first was an incredibly rude comment that I was disgusting and vulgar by even suggesting that women use cloth pads.  This answer made me so angry that I reported it as abuse.
  • Second answer:  "No fabrics are really that good for menstrual pads; however, sheet metal and sandpaper pads are reported to work very well!"
  • Third Answer:  " I don't know about that....not very sanitary...most women would want something they could just dispose of when it comes to that. They use to use cloth menstrual pads in the old days...why go backwards?"
  • Fourth Answer:  "I'd recomend bamboo fiber from trader joe's combined with a light dusting in kosher salt then washing. The salt kills all the viruses and bacteria so you can even re-use them if you don't mind the mess without washing!"  This was the least ignorant and insulting, but I don't think this user knows what she's talking about.
I hate that periods are viewed as dirty and disgusting.  To me they are a part of nature and a sign of fertility.  I mean when you hit menopause, you don't get it any more and you can no longer bear children.

If anyone else her agrees with me, please let me know.

Menstrual lib and the colour of menstrual products [09 Nov 2008|06:29pm]

elettaria
I recently posted a silly poll on [info]menstrual_cups about the latest development in menstrual cups: cups in different colours. It brought out several women asking the same question. Why should we care what colour a menstrual cup is? Why are so many people feeling passionate about the issue? The discussion developed to cover menstruation taboos as well as the menstrual product industry in general. As I'm fascinated by gender, anthropology, and colour, I thought I'd explore this a little further. It's a bit like the question in the Vagina Monologues, "If your vagina were to go out, what would it wear?"

Anyone can reply, whatever menstrual product they use, whether they love their periods or hate them (or both at once), whether they are aching for a pink and purple marbled cup with spangles to be produced or think the whole idea is a lot of nonsense and the original versions are the best. For all questions, I'm not just interested in a simple answer, but also how you feel about the whole business, how you relate to it personally. If you have conflicting opinions, go on and explore them. Since the answers are likely to be long, please be kind to those of us with visual problems and put paragraph breaks between the sections!

I thought I'd cross post this from [info]menstrual_cups

I was completely squicked out by the idea of art in menstrual blood.  It's not a new idea, either.

Then, I saw this journal:  http://spiralingmoon.livejournal.com/

Wow, wow, wow.  I am amazed.

I hope you enjoy.

From Mooncup news letter...for UK members [29 May 2008|03:12pm]

jadea_faith
Okay, so anyone getting the Mooncup news letter knows about this, however it does not hurt to pass the message on to those who don't have the news letter. A good little one for those of us in the UK, just copy and paste the sample letter, change as you see fit, and send off to your local MP using www.writetothem.com to search on your UK post code. A quick little piece of action that could make some difference.

X-posted to [info]menstrual_lib and [info]menstrual_cups

Jo Swinson, MP, is calling for the Government to encourage use of reusable sanitary protection in an Early Day Motion. Early day motions (EDMs) are formal motions submitted for debate in the House of Commons and are useful in drawing attention to specific events or campaigns and for demonstrating the extent of parliamentary support for a particular cause or point of view. The massive surge in awareness of real nappies over the past few years is, in part, thanks to similar Early Day Motions bringing the issues around disposable nappies to the attention of the Government. Jo Swinson's EDM is an important first step in putting reusable sanitary protection on the political agenda. You can help in this process by emailing your MP and asking them to sign the Motion. For a sample letter, contact details for your MP and to read the Motion please click here.

More women becoming eco-period friendly? [13 May 2008|08:40pm]
brad2542
This article seems to think so. Maybe a positive sign?

More women changing their choice of sanitary protection

09 May 2008

Alternative sanitary protection products are growing increasingly popular among women in the UK, experts say.

Peter Kilvert of Alice Kilvert Tampon Alert said that more women are trying alternatives to tampons such as re-usable cups, which rule out the risk of Toxic Shock Syndrome, as well as being more eco-friendly than disposable options.

He commented: "Cups like the Mooncup are excellent, a lot of women are concerned about the environment and don't like disposable sanitary protection, so these are far more environmentally friendly. They are also cheaper in the long-run."

Half of all cases of Toxic Shock Syndrome reported in the UK each year are associated with women using tampons, public health statistics reveal.

While Toxic Shock Syndrome is very rare, approximately 40 cases are reported in the UK each year.

In response, women's health specialists claim that education and awareness is key when it comes to choosing feminine hygiene options.

"protecting futures" [23 Mar 2008|10:14am]

quellers
Hello!
I've seen the commercials and now I've come across the website for Tampax and Always' "Protecting Futures" campaign.
http://www.protectingfutures.com/home.jsp
Just out of curiosity, what are your opinions of this effort?

Quote:
"How we're protecting futures

What if you couldn't go to school when you had your period? As amazing as it may seem in the 21st century, that's the reality for some girls in Southern Africa.

Tampax and Always are doing something to help protect those girls' futures. In partnership with the United Nations Association of the USA's HERO campaign, we established the Protecting Futures program.

Your purchase of Tampax or Always helps us donate $1.4 million through 2008 to the United Nations Association's HERO campaign to help provide feminine protection and education to girls in Southern Africa. That money will be used to provide health, hygiene and puberty education. It's also going into building classrooms, toilets, wash stations and dorms. And it's being used to provide the students with meals and clean water. In addition, we'll be providing pads to these girls to help them not miss school when they get their period."

Reactions?

"Do you have your period? "security guard asked high schooler [11 Nov 2007|02:13pm]

gritando
Hi

I found this story through women's health news
though it was great that boys acted in support ,too.

Grahamsville — Several television news crews from New York City are camped outside the Tri-Valley Central School following the story in today's Times Herald-Record about what question a school security guard asked a 14-year-old female student.

The girl was called out of class by a security guard during a school sweep last week to make sure no kids had backpacks or other banned bags.

Samantha Martin had a small purse with her that day.

That's why the security guard, ex-Monticello cop Mike Bunce, asked her The Question.

She says he told her she couldn't have a purse unless she had her period. Then he asked, "Do you have your period?"

Samantha was mortified.

She says she thought, "Oh, my God. Get away from me." But instead of answering, she just walked back into class.

At home, she cried, and told her mother what happened.

It appears that at least a few other girls were also asked the same question.

On Sept. 21, Martin and other girls were called to the office of Principal Robert Worden. Lisa Raymond, the assistant superintendent for business, was also there, Martin said.

"They just asked me what he (Bunce) said. I told them, and they said thanks for coming," she said.

The small Sullivan County school has been in an uproar for the last week. Girls have worn tampons on their clothes in protest, and purses made out of tampon boxes. Some boys wore maxi-pads stuck to their shirts in support.
