Leakage and removal help!

So, i've been using the Mooncup UK (B, as i'm 18 and no kids) for a few months now, and i've had no problems until now. (This is a great community btw, it helped answer many of the questions when I was first starting out!)

leaking problem )removal and leaking )

Sorry for the long post, and I know, TMI! So I guess my main problem is removal, as I can't seem to remove the cup with all the contents in the cup, and not all over my hand! I have heavy periods btw, and before using the mooncup, I used to have to change my pad every 2 hours. Also, I wear my mooncup high up, as everytime I try to keep it low, it always migrates up.

I hope I explained it well and it's not too confusing

cup use causing light nausea and dizziness, light pressure in my head and throat

Hi all! I have been reading THE community, and I have to say it is amazing and just great! I found the answers to all my questions! This is my second period trying to use a cup and I am so excited, I really want to be able to use it, I don't ever want to put a tampon on, but something is not right!

I had a large Diva last month, and I experienced a sensation of light pressure and tickling on my throat and light pressure on my head, and light nausea and dizziness. I read here that too much suction or pressure on the cervix could cause this reaction; however, in the entries I read the reaction was really bad with pain and fainting, I never experience any of this.

After reading up I enlarged the Diva wholes, and cut the stem (so that it would not be so high up) and this helped a bit. But I still had the reaction so I got a beautiful Large LilacCup, I thought squishiness and larger wholes would put less pressure and suction. I tried and it was fine, then when I took it out (5 hrs later) and put it back in the reaction was really strong! ;( I could not leave it to sleep with. I tried again this morning and I have the reaction very light, I think I have to put it in a way that does not push or suck up so badly on my cervix. The thing is I don't experience any pain or discomfort in my vagina! And it is a lot better than with the Diva, but I cannot reach that high up to check if it is pressure or suction.

I have tried to pinch the bottom and suck the cup up a bit with my muscles, move it to the sides to let more air in so the suction or pressure will be less (mind you, the pressure on my head and throat), but I cannot accomplish it. My finger won’t get all the way up to the rim to let more air in...

So my questions after a long story...

1 - Has anyone experienced this, does it go away? It is not really something I want to get used to.

2 - How else can I get more air in the cup to release the suction? Is it that I am not doing the pinching, sucking, and moving for long enough?

3 - How would you check if the problem is pressure or suction if you can get your fingers up to the rim (and I can get at least 6 cm in) to check where the cup is with respect to the cervix? Never had any leaks so the rim is all the way around the vagina walls

4 - Maybe I am putting it up too high? How do I know that is high enough (just at the entrance of the vagina?) I would like to wear it as low as possible. I already cut the stem off the LC

5 - Would a stiffer cup help?

Thank you so much! And sorry for the long post!

Lack of Faith in Mah Cup...
I am using my Diva Cup for the first time, and it's been OKAY.  The first day I had some leaking, but today I didn't have any, however, while I was at work I kept freaking out that it was leaking so I felt like I wanted to hide in the bathroom the entire day!

I have a few questions:
1.)  I've read that some people have a problem with not being able to reach the cup when its inside them, my problem is the exact opposite.  My cup's stem almost sticks out, its an inch or two shy, does this happen to anyone else?  I don't want to cut the stem because I use it to insert it.

2.)  How do you really know that it's sealed?  I blindly insert it and push up, almost like a plunger and more or less hope it's okay.  I can't do the circle or turn thing to make sure its sealed.

3.) Does anyone else experience pain when using a menstrual cup?  The general area of my lady parts hurt whenever I use the cup.

4.) How do I get the cup to completely open once inside me, I kept feeling that one side of my cup was folded in?

I reaaaaaally want to be able to use my cup but I feel like giving up!  If anyone has any tips or suggestions please let me know!

Also, I am in a club, the ______ College Women's Center, and was planning on having a meeting where I lead a discussion about alternatives to one time use pads and tampons, anyone have any ideas as to especially important things I should cover?

I also use pads from party pants pads WHICH I LOVE, but I am trying to use the diva cup as to cut down on having to buy more and wash pads.  I started out using Instead Cups, which I think really helped.

I would love to be able to use my cup without fear of leakage or having to use a pad as well, and as today went well with no leaks I am feeling somewhat more hopeful.

Also, I am verrrry new to live journal, so forgive me for any mistakes and my lack of a photo/icon.

ps THIS COMMUNITY IS FABULOUS.

Roller coasters and the like
Hello all!

Every now and then we get the slew of questions about can I use cups doing this, that, or the other activity, and the answer is usually yes, you can. However, I didn't remember anyone asking about riding roller coasters, and a quick search through the tags and memories confirmed that we'd discussed it briefly, but never really said yes or no definitely, so I thought a quick post might be in order.

I went to my favorite theme park yesterday, on a heavy day of my period, rode all the coasters, and my Divacup did just fine. Nary a leak. So, that in mind: roller coasters are a-ok with a cup in, if that's your cup of tea. :)

Just wanted to share that in case this question comes up in the future!

massive ladycup suction...?
I'm not having such a good time with my ladycup this time around... getting it in and out is no problem, but it seems that when I do get it in, it gives me this sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach -- or uterus, I guess. It happens the moment it pops open and and after that, I feel these constant mild cramps along with this sinking feeling. I thought maybe it had just suctioned onto my cervix really, really strongly, but I'm not sure...

Anyone else had this problem? I didn't have this anxiety-inducing sinking feeling until just recently.

Help need of all of you menstrual cup goddess

I need the help of all of you menstrual cup goddess out there.

I really need some help with my cup – here is some quick info

Age = 15

Cup = Diva

So I have had my amazing Diva cup for a while now and have been having some major problems getting it to work. I can insert it snugly up where it’s supposed to go and forget about it for awhile until I go bright red and have to rush off to the toilet. Upon entering the toilet I discover that my underwear and pants have undergone some spontaneous redecorating and have decided on the new colour scheme of red. So that’s where I am going wrong … I had already decided that my periods don’t like me but completely bypass that nice Diva cup which I put there especially for it? Not nice at all. I think its not hard to see that this will not work for me at all if the cup doesn’t catch the blood, that is why I am asking all of you awesome “masters of the cup” to help me on my quest of using-a-menstrual-cup-without-getting-blood-all-over-my-nice-clothes-cause-my-cups-not-working. I am guessing that I not getting the cup to pop open or seal right, any tips, instructions, advice?

Please I need help with this (I have a really heavy flow and get really sick of having to run to the toilet between every class to change my super tampon)

Any advice, help, tips, tricks, instructions, information, suggestions, directions or any other help would be really really imprecated helpful.

Thanks

Ok responeding...

yep tried most folds, all seemed to work more or less the same but I had a bit of trouble inserting some of them.

I just got my Small Lilaccup in the mail yesterday. Tried it a couple times, and it seems to be working out great. I only have one question about breaking the seal. It really hurts to break the seal and then just pull the cup out. I can't really seem to pull it out sideways either. SO trying that didn't help. I use the punch-down fold for insertion, and have seen some girls say they use it for removal.
But I can't really get that to work either.

Any other ways of removal you like?

Worst experience ever with small Ladycup
First, sorry for the scaring title (it's not meant for new users to run away ;_;), but those really were the only words that came to my mind while I was struggling to remove my small Ladycup...

Bit of recap : I've had a small Mooncup
UK for more than a year, and have been very happy with it. I've never had any problems, and I'm used to saying that it came as a revolution in my life ! But I found the material quite stiff, pressing too much (I admit being fussy) against my urethra, and I wanted to give the super soft Ladycup a try, so I ordered one last week and received it yesterday.

I put it in yesterday, and the time for removal went this morning...

Well, I thought "the smallest, the best" but I guess I was wrong : the small Ladycup is super tiny, and though I'm quite petite (5ft, 88lbs) it has proved TOO small !
That was my first mistake. The second one is that I assumed, before putting it in, that the stem would bother me, so I cut it off entirely, as I did on my Mooncup UK without encountering any problems with that...
Well, that was without considering the super smooth surface of the Ladycup, making it difficult to grab. But that was not an insurmountable problem, as using nails would have done anyway.

The thing is that my cervix was completely inside the Ladycup, leaving it airtight !! So it was impossible to release suction by either squeezing the bottom of the cup or reaching the rim with my fingers (fortunately I don't have any problems with putting my fingers in xD)
I had varied thoughts, such as piercing it with a pin...
I eventually brainlessly pulled it out, in a horrible pain x_x (but at least it's out...)

I'm happy that it isn't my first cup, otherwise I would have been completely traumatized !! (again with the scaring words >_< don't misunderstand me here, I really LOVE my MCUK !!!)

So here comes a question : for those who own a Ladycup, how do you remove it ? I mean, without having it slipping off of your fingers (I'm not necessarily talking about a suction problem) ? Did you leave the stem untrimmed ?

After this dreadful experience, I’ve come to this conclusion : not disdain the biggest size, and TEST it out before trimming the stem completely !

Diva Cup - Suction & Removal Issues
Thanks so much for this awesome community! I have been reading for a couple of months and have found answers to all my questions in the archives. (yeah!) Unfortunately, I had really traumatizing experience removing my Diva Cup for the first time and am in need of some advice...

I was able to insert my Diva Cup model 1 with no problems (I admit, I brought my laptop into the bathroom with me and followed the tips and instructions I found in the archives). I was afraid I wouldn't get the suction right but I could definitely feel it when the cup opened and formed a seal. The cup sat fairly low--the stem bothered me a bit when I bent over and sat down, but i figured I could trim it the next day.

The next morning I went into the bathroom to remove the cup and had no problems bearing down and grabbing the stem and then reaching the base of the cup. I pinched the cup (hard) and nothing happened. I wiggled the cup a little (which was super painful) and the suction still didn't release. I tried reaching my finger along the side of the cup to break the seal from the top, but that was super painful as well. I continued to wiggle and tug until I had the bottom 1/4 of the cup outside me. The cup STILL hadn't released its death grip on my ladyparts.

As I was sitting there, with half the cup outside me I contemplated grabbing a pair of scissors and cutting the bottom out--it really hurt. I was finally able to squeeze one top corner out and the second it was out the rest of the cup fell out.

What the hell went wrong? I know the diva cup is notorious for having tight suction, but this was much more than I was anticipating! Any advice? Should I enlarge the holes at the top? Is the cup too big? Anyone have ideas for a different removal process?

Diva cup & Keeper MC first time dry run
Hello everyone! I hope you ladies could help. :) I really want this to work.

The intro:
I'm 19 years old, still a virgin, but (I'd like to think) very familiar with my body. At this point, I believe my hymen is basically nonexistent, so I don't think that it's a problem. Also, not to be TMI here, but I'm very comfortable with the idea of inserting something into my vagina and I'm cozy with touching my menstrual flow.

tl;dr extra info )

The pain:
Holy HELL, it was painful. I felt like I would NEVER get it out once it was in, and it hadn’t even gone in all the way. It popped halfway up and the suction was so severe that I felt like my insides were going to tear out. I read that description on here before and though, “That bad? Hm…” No. Now I UNDERSTAND it feels that bad. To make matters worse, there was hardly any air in it, so that I had a difficult time pressing on it to break the suction.

I emailed GladRags about it and they got back to me a few days later. They said to send back my Mooncup if there are really no holes. I thought, “Hell no, I’m not going to pay shipping to send back this uterus grabbing cup for a new one that might be equally uncomfortable.” Basically, I didn’t like the idea of paying shipping for a replacement, getting one, and having it not fit my body, and having to ship it back. More importantly, I wanted to use it for my upcoming period in a few days to get the feel of it. (Funny how these cups have us waiting on our periods like during a pregnancy scare. :P )

I decided that the process would take too long, so I went on ahead to order the Divacup from iHerb. I heard that they had fast shipping. I got mine on there (with the discount) for about 20, so I think the price went up since. (?) I read some people got it for about $13.

I thought I might love the Divacup because from my understanding, I do have a deep vagina. I just tried it out right now for a dry run, during which my natural lubrication helped me out to get it in. I experienced a bit of stretching to get it in, but nothing that I would call “painful”, just a bit uncomfortable. It’s nothing I hadn’t experienced before.

I tried the 7 fold and it didn’t pop in. It was rather uncomfortable having it sit up there, but whatever, it’s my first time. I don’t mind trial and error. After, I decided to try the origami fold. It was both easier to insert, and it had popped open quite easily, probably because of the Divacup’s stiff material. But GOODNESS, once it was in, it sucked itself up into my vagina and stayed up there with death grip suction.

I felt the same intense pain as with the Mooncup (only not as intense). It feels like it’s pulling out my insides but also, this time I felt a painful sensation that seemed to affect even my anal canal (or it felt near my prostate, too. I’m not sure, but that general area Thanks for the correction!). I’m sure my anal canal had nothing to do with it (sorry for being so blunt, lol), but the pain seemed to reach that general area. I was wondering if anyone else had experienced this. I felt extremely lightheaded, nauseous, and I was already prepared to throw up. (I read other women experienced this) I remembered my mom saying (upon discovering the cup) that she already knew I was “atrevida” (Spanish for “bold”, “daring”) and that I should be careful. The rebel in me weakly exclaimed, “Nooo~”, while I was half certain I would faint.

All the while, I was trying to get my Divacup out. The same as the Mooncup, there was hardly any air inside to work with, so I resorted to reaching my finger in to break the seal from the mouth of the cup, and then slowly pulling it out. I didn’t freak out as badly as with my no-hole Mooncup, but it was still painful.

Advice?
So here I’m wondering, especially about the anal canal and deep pain. Could it be that my cup is pressing on my cervix that’s also causing all the pain? It fit in all the way, I just had terrible suction problems, I THINK. But based on this description, I was wondering if anyone had any similar experiences where the problem was a too-large cup. Do you ladies think the problem is the hole size, the length, what? Anything. I’m scared, but willing to try again once I get some advice. (Advice is always comforting.) For now, I’m putting my attempts to rest and letting my poor insides rest from the severe suction. Also, keep in mind that all of my pain is in my insides, so that it has nothing to do with my hymen. How can I get it to have less severe suction? I'm stubborn so I'm not read to give up yet.

The Lady Cup sounds soooo attractive because of the reports of easy insertion and the holes seem much bigger. (After so many suction problems holes = thank you thank you) However, I was hoping to make friends with the Divacup because I’m currently still convinced that my cervix is rather high, and I’d read that longer cups are better for longer vaginas.

Please shed some light. Thanks in advance!

Revisiting the cup while healing vaginismus, and going to SE Asia
Hello again, everyone! I used to frequent this community a few years back when I first got a Diva Cup and then current my Mooncup (UK). I loved using the Mooncup for the year or so that I was able to, but I switched to cloth pads exclusively when I was diagnosed with vaginismus about three years ago. I had been too afraid that inflicting any pain down there might exasperate my symptoms. However, I will be travelling to SE Asia this summer for nearly two months and I can't see cloth pads working out so well on the trip. I want to be able to use the cup on the trip successfully. I leave in late June/early July so I want to get this down before I go.

So far, insertion has gone surprisingly well. I use the the punch down method and ease it in and it works. Everything in that way is ok, except for a few issues I'm having that I hope some or one of you may be able to offer some advice about:

- removal. Whoa. I was in cold sweats squatting in my bathtub for twenty minutes last night trying to get the sucker out. That, er, 'sucked'. I get a lot of suction, and either it sits really high or my fingers are too short but I have a lot of difficulty contorting myself to grip with my thumb and break the seal with my forefinger at the same time without causing my vagina and urethra a bunch of pain. Any tips on removal that doesn't involve shoving almost my entire arm up in me? Something vagina and vaginismus friendly?

- heavy flow. I've got one. Like, really heavy. Today, just as a small example, I overflowed after only about 3 hours, which isn't much time. Should I consider going on the pill for the trip to regulate the flow?

Also, any other tips on using the cup while travelling, particularly in countries where I'll be facing not much more than a hole, a bucket of water, and a scoop, would be greatly appreciated!

hello again
well my cup has arrived and i have tried ti insert it. my periods have not started but i will be on holiday when they do so i wanted to try and get used to inserting it before i go.

i have only tried about 4 times, with lubricant, and i´m having problems already.  it doesn´t feel like it´s a problem getting it in, but the one i´ve got is a size two lunette selene, and it is VERY stiff.  i have only tried one fold as it´s the only one i know and is the one that was described in the leaflet.

to cut a loooong story short, basically, what happens is that i get it so far, lose the grip (my hand starts to cramp up) as it is very stiff and hard to handle, i used both hands which didn´t help me at all... and it pops open before i can get it in all the way.  the bottom part and the tag are still sticking out and what i get is a suctioning feeling (and sound), then i panick and give up and now i´m scared to try again.

now it may be that that is how it happens, but i´ve not got a clue.... if so, do i just carry on pushing it in?

thank u xx

UPDATE: i tried a dry run again after watching the video with different folds. i kneeled on the bathroom floor, used i tiny bit of lube,  and used the punch down fold (as it was the only one i could remember at the time) and it worked perfectly! i was scared to let go of the fold as i was expecting discomfort when the cup would pop open, but decided to be brave, and all i could feel was a little sensation and my face got all hot and flustered. i didn't cut the stem straight away as i wanted to see how it went first, but when it came to it, i couldn't feel it at all so i've left it as it is.

i didn't feel anything at all with it inside, other than a little bit of pressure and a full-like feeling but that disappeared after an hour or so. i also went for a wee with it in (as some had mentioned they had problems with urinating with the cup in) but it was no different than had it not been in. so all in all, a successful insertion and comfortable 2 hours i had it in.

when it came to removing it, that was it bit of a struggle.  i could feel the stem but struggled to actually get hold of the cup. i didn't want to pull just the stem and end the successful dry run with a horrible removal experience, so i persevered.  i wanted to be able to nearly use the punch down technique to break the seal and then pull it from the bottom, but i have yet to master that tecnique.  after a while i decided to try another position, so i stood up with one leg on the bath and started pushing a little. i finally got a hold of the bottom and managed to move one finger up alongside it to break the seal and pulled.  it went fine until it got to the rim.  that's the only bit that hurt really, but i'm guessing that after a few tries that problem will only be minor.

so all in all, good dry run experience, am very looking forward to my period and to able to go in the hot tub whilst on holiday.

just figured that success stories would be good to read as well as the problems :)

and a BIG thank u to all that replied, and to all that share their stories here, it is so comforting knowing that if i need any information, looking trough the tags will answer all my questions.  (i am also guessing that my partner does not reeeeally want to hear more about my cup :þ)

Lady Cup vs. Diva Cup (Pt 2)
I previously posted twice about my incessant Diva Cup (small) leaking issues (possibly due to my tilted uterus/cervix, which meant blood was flowing right past the Diva), and I mentioned that I was switching to a Lady Cup (large). I posted some preliminary comparisons when I first received the cup. Well, I've been on my period for three days now, so I'm finally ready to post about the experience. (Yes, I know you have all been waiting with bated breath, haha)

The verdict: Lady Cup has been a huge improvement, with some caveats:

Leaking- pretty much eliminated with LC, so it's not perfect but it's a vast improvement. I have still had some leaking, but usually this occurs when I am sitting down for long periods of time. The LC still zips up my vagina like the Diva did, so when I'm sitting, I think this puts the cup at an angle at which my cervix slips below the rim of the cup. Has anyone else noticed increased leakage when you're sitting down for a while?

Insertion/sealing/popping- oh man, I had never understood prior to the LC how people could just "swish" a finger around a cup to make it open. That NEVER worked with the Diva; if it went in and popped while slightly folded, I'd have to reinsert from the beginning. With the LC, gentle pressure and maneuvering is all it takes, and I can do it in pretty much any position. I attribute this to cup design rather than to experience because I had and used my Diva for six months.

Comfort- although the LC has been worth it because it's made my period almost unnoticeable (and it doesn't make me feel like I have to pee all the time, which the Diva did), the large LC has not been the best fit for me. And I'm not talking about insertion or removal. There is no room for me to get my finger to the rim of the cup, so I've been unable to nudge my cervix into the cup to prevent leakage. Even wiggling it around hurts, and I feel a dull soreness/ache all the time. I chose a large because I'm almost 25 and because it has a bigger capacity, but as a lot of women on here have said, it's a shape rather than a size issue, so I've ordered a small LC that I'm going to try. I'm sure it'll be good for my light days if it doesn't work out for the heavier ones.

Overall, I strongly recommend the LC over the Diva for ladies who've had long-term leakage problems with the Diva and/or who know they have a tilted uterus. The shorter length and greater maneuverability may make it a better choice in these cases. :)

Total Cup Length
I was wondering if anyone has made a list or chart comparing the total length, including the stem, of all the cup currently available. I think this information would be helpful for those of us who are a little longer.

I have a fairly long vagina and during the last few days of my period I find it difficult to reach my Miacup to remove it. Pinching the bottom of the cup doesn't work for me, I have to get my finger over the rim to break the suction and bearing down while holding the stem helps me hold it low enough to do this.

I'm thinking of buying a second cup that is longer to make removal easier on those days. I got an IUD about six weeks ago and want to make removal as trouble free as possible to avoid disturbing it.

Just from look at photos of the different cups it appears to me that the Femmecup has a longer stem than most other cups but the cup itself is shorter than my Mia. Do you ladies think that would be a good option?

Any advice from users who have worked through a similar problem would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

HELP!!
So, after my first not so good experience with the (small) diva back in February, I got the courage up and  tried it again almost a month ago.  I had tried a 'dry run' with it and was able to get it in and out...no problem, so I was pretty excited for my period! Later on that night, it came, which only ever seems to happen when I'm waiting for it.

Well, I put it in...felt the stem poking at me a little bit, (and it did that when I did the dry run too) but decided to ignore it and read up on trimming the stem. After I was done all the reading, it stopped poking. I then went to go see if I could get it out. I tried it about 3 different times that night and twice again that morning...no such luck.  I had the same experience with it the first time, so the experience of explaining the story to the people at health services was not *as* embarrassing. Turns out, once again, it was suctioned to my cervix and I cannot for the life of me remove it when it's suctioned there...no matter how hard I try.

Has anyone had this problem before? Does this mean I have a low cervix? I really want this whole cup thing to work, but I don't think it's in my best interest to try the diva cup again. And as a poor college grad, buying several different cups is out of the question. Any suggestions on this would be greatly appreciated.

ETA: This may sound like a stupid question, but when inserting any of the cups that have stems, should the stem be outside of your body??

Suction issue with Diva
I have a large Diva and every time I try it, the cup gets suctioned so hard that it doesn't want to come out. My cervix is high on my cycle so it is really hard to remove. Any tips? It goes in great feels fine other than the stem, but I can't trim it until I can figure removal out.

Has this ever been tried?
This may be nothing, but who knows... it's something I thought of while in the shower.

Has anyone ever tried making a menstrual cup with a valve? I'm thinking of something that opens when you pinch it sideways. A good example would be the valve on a VacuVin wine bottle stopper.

Picture of wine bottle stopper. )

It would have to be small, so that the vagina wall muscles can't pinch it open; and it would have to be sturdy enough to require an actual pinch to open. It could very well be in the location of the stem, but it shouldn't be sticking out quite so much or it might get uncomfortable.
Of course, it would have to be leakproof.

I'd think an easy way to break the seal would make menstrual cups easier to remove.
What do you all think?

Edited to add: Seems I wasn't clear.
I don't mean a valve to empty the cup through. I mean a valve as a means to break the seal before removing the cup.

Anyway, it seems that this has never been done, or at least not that anyone here knows of.
Interesting...

Lunette Size 1 Leaking
I recently got a Lunette Selene size 1 from Leastore. I was so excited when I received it that I was actually sad my period just ended. After a couple of dry runs, I thought I had the insertion and removal process down. I started out using the punch-down fold, but found that the C-fold popped open easier. It didn't hurt to insert or remove and was pretty comfortable to wear as well. Then the real test came...

Cramping after removal?
I'm noticing that I get some fairly intense cramping right after I remove my LadyCup. Is this normal, or might it be the result of not adequately breaking the seal and putting too much suction on my poor li'l cervix?

I'm doing my best to break the seal before I start pulling on it. I slide my finger up alongside and push inward while bearing down until I hear/feel a squishy burp, and then pinch the bottom hard and pull while still bearing down. It seems quite hard to pull out it, and it hurts a bit, so I'm not quite sure I've broken the suction well enough, but I can't seem to get my finger all the way up to the rim to actually pull on it.

I can't shake the idea that it's sucking on my cervix too hard and that's what's causing that crampy feeling right after I remove it, and I walk around doing kegels for a while, worrying I'm going to give myself a prolapse!

that if you just insert a punched-down Diva and let it be, there is way less hastle. I find that at least in my case, if I jostle it around till it thwacks open, it leaks whereas when it's left alone and opens when it's good and ready, everything is just fine... good seal, suction and no leaks.
Also, I think my Diva knows I can't see all that well 'cause it started to have a pretty bad odor right from the start of my cycle this time around and today, I noticed that the smell was gone and so was Aunt Flo. I'm pretty pleased.

SQUISH and other sound effects
Hello,

I am new to the cup thing, and I've already gotten some great advice from you all about trimming my Lunette (sm) and overflow issues. I was just wondering whether it's normal to have lots of sound effects going on down there during removal. My finger can't reach the rim of the cup, so I can't hook my finger over it, which means I kind of have to push on the side of the cup to break the seal. This makes a tremendous (and embarassing!) noise, and I think I can also feel the blood squishing back up into my uterus or something when I do this.

Are these sound effects normal? Is there a better (quieter) way to take the cup out?? (I have a very short stem, and I may yet trim it off entirely...)

Thanks!!

the clogging conundrum
I *did* take a look, but I was hoping someone could give me an answer here and now...thanks.

So I picked up a Diva Size 1 on running across it last week since I was a fan of sponges and this seemed like an even better idea. Popped it in a few days ago when I noticed some spotting and waited while my period had a surprisingly slow start...

Goes in swell, fit/size is fine as far as I can tell, kinda SUCKS taking it out (w/attendant pain, but it's not that bad -- but I keep trying to think of a better way to break the seal). Washing it w/clear "sensitive" dish detergent (hand laundry stuff w/no phosphates) and rinsing, rinsing, rinsing but am now worrying whatever other unlisted crap is in there is setting me on a course for a yeast infection or worse....? Works GREAT w/little bit of gunk and tiny amount of blood; I'm enamored but yesterday/today the red wave arrived and then today before the lovely 12-hour timeframe was up the leaks did too. and I was sad.

The holes had clogged with blood. Rinse, clear, reinsert but a mere few hours and not that much blood later, same deal. I ran for the nearest toothpick and poked and poked but the holes don't look any more clog-proof to me.

It's an extremely sucky (or leaky) Catch-22 if your blood is going to make the thing useless. I thought I was all sealed up due to the sucking (and there was even some suckage when it was leaking, I think), but if I'm going to have to worry about this thing every bleeping three hours I may as well just be back in crappy pad hell.

Help?
Thoughts?
Advice?
HOW do you MAKE SURE those DAMN HOLES STAY CLEAR????
Again, thanks for listening and even *more* so for replies... LJ's wonderful for so many things...

First day (Successfully) Using the Cup! =]
I am a 14 year old girl, and I recently got a Diva Cup because nothing else was working well for me.

I eagerly waited for my period, but the first two days when I tried to insert my diva cup, I just... coudln't. It hurt a LOT and the first day I couldn't even get it partly in. The second day I got it about 2/3 in, but then couldn't stand the pain. I was pretty disappointed, because I really wanted it to work and I thought the DivaCup was going to be my "perfect solution."

Today, I tried again and got it all the way in with only a little bit of pain! =D I've been using the punch-down fold, with the side punched wayyy down so that it has a nice point.

I've used it all day, and so far I have been good and had no leaks (partly because my flow is really light by now).

My only issues, however, are:

~I find it really hard to twist the cup. I can't really get a grip on it unless I grab the cup beyond the ridges. Except when I do this it only twists the bottom and the cup becomes all swirled up! I guess I twisted it enough, though, because I didn't have leaks. Except I felt dents at the bottom. Perhaps it wasn't sealed and it only didn't leak because my flow is so light right now... So how can I tell if it's open?
~When I removed the cup it hurt! I figured that it is because of the suction. Is there supposed to be a suction? I broke it by reaching to the top of the cup and pushing one side it. Is this okay?
~My mom says that it isn't good to wear it longer than 4 hours. She also doesn't want me to wear it overnight because "I should give my muscles a rest, because otherwise the DivaCup will just fall out of me someday." Is this realistic? I thought I would be able to wear my DivaCup for my whole period. I don't want to have to keep buying pads...
~I can feel it. When I'm sitting or walking around I can feel the Diva Cup. It's not really painful, just a little uncomfortable. Also, I checked and the stem is not poking out at all. Is this okay or is there some way to fix it?
~Also, I didn't bother buying the Diva cup and the only soap I have at home has a mild scent. I don't usually break out from smelly soaps, so will washing the Diva Cup with this be a problem? Or are there any other in-home washes I can use? (Actually I already washed it with this soap. I feel fine, so far)

But over all, it's working great and I  think it might actually be the solution I was looking for!

~Thanks!

Theory Behind Cup Sealing and Size
Hello Everybody! While I wait for my cups to boil, I thought I'd ask a quick question.

Why does my largest cup always leak?

I have a small diva, a small lunette, and a large lunette, and after six months I still can't wear the large lunette without it leaking. I'm very happy with my other cups, we're good friends. But I bought the large lunette because my IUD gives me really heavy periods for the middle two days, and quite frankly the enterance to my vagina gets tired of me poping cups in and out of it every hour and half, so I was hoping the large lunette would give me more time between when I need to empty it. I've been using cups for over six months now, so I know the usual tricks: spin it, try it in-side out, tug on it to seal it ect.

I'm just wondering what the reason is that a bigger cup won't seal well, when a smaller one will. So if anyone has any ideas, I'd love to hear them. I'm as happy as it gets with my other cups, I just want to know as much as I can about how they work.

Thanks!

Dry Run - Suction released

Hi Everyone,

I did a dry run today with my Femmecup in for a few hours, I put my cup in when I was showering, and the first time I put it in I knew it didn't seal, because it was dented in the bottom, so I removed the cup and reinserted it and it was fine then. After out of the shower I kind of felt that my cup had unsealed, but I left it in. After about 2 hours I was feeling some mild cramping so I waited for a bit and then when I went to remove my cup, there were dents at the bottom, so I know the seal was broken, also I didn't have to reach in to break the seal, I was able to pull the cup out by the stem quite easily.

Do you think the mild cramping was due to the cup not being sealed? My cervix is low right now.

Also the stem on my cup is poking out of my inner labia slightly, and I probably will remove some of the stem if not all, but I am waiting to actually use my cup on my period. I am thinking if I remove the whole stem then the cup will completely be inside past my pubic bone, and I think that would make it very comfortable, but maybe if I leave some of the stem sticking out past my pubic bone then that might not be a problem either.
Where do most people trim their stem to in terms of how far does it stick out of you (past your pubic bone)?

I will probably try another dry run tomorrow.

Thanks
