Poll -- “Build A Cup” (Just For Fun)
Hey ladies, I have a poll for you here. I always thought it would be cool to be able to specify what we like in a cup, so I’m just trying to find out what qualities (specifically) most women prefer. I might submit these poll results to a few companies, haven‘t decided yet. I wanted to do 2 separate polls (one for women who’ve given birth vaginally, and one for women who have not, to see if there are common preferences), but I can’t get 2 polls into one post, and I don’t want to post twice, lol. So I’ll just sort of generalize here… Basically, the poll is about the cup you most frequently use, and what you want to be different/the same, or what you prefer in comparison to that particular cup. Have fun! Comments welcome, of course. If there's anything I forgot, go ahead and mention it, and what you prefer in that category. I'll try to add that up too.

Cups, Sponges, Tampons, and IUDs
Back in March I posted two polls over at </a></b></a>[info]iud_divas and many of you here were kind enough to participate.  : )   It makes me happy to see evidence (more than just me!) of peacefully co-existing cups and IUDs as there are still the occassional comments floating around over there saying cups will "suck out" your IUD...
Yesterday I finally got around to posting my followup over there and now I'm posting the part that is relevant to menstrual cups below.  To see the post in it's entirety, click HERE.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Does using internal period protection increase the risk of expulsion?
Based on the answers to Poll #1363283, this would also seem to be an exaggerated fear.

With 121 divas who currently use an IUD or have used one within the last 5 years responding, 64% (77 women) reported that they use some form of internal period protection.
Of these 77 women, 56 use tampons (73%), 24 use menstrual cups (31%), 1 person reported using sponges, and 1 reported "other" (baby sock tampons?)
Out of the 77 divas who reported using tampons, cups, or sponges, the vast majority, 78% (60 women), began using internal protection within the first month of having an IUD inserted. Of those 60, more than half (33 women) have successfully had their IUD in place for at least 6 months.
Out of 121 who currently use an IUD or have used one within the last 5 years, only 5 reported an "on period expulsion". Three reported using pads (1 cloth, 2 disposable) , 1 used a menstrual cup, and 1 used a combination of tampons and sponges. Simply looking at the numbers for this poll, this puts the expulsion rate for pad users at 7%, menstrual cup users at 4% and tampons/sponges users at 2%... As such, I believe it is unlikely that choice of period protection influences IUD expulsion.
The menstrual cup user had her IUD in place for less than 2 weeks before expelling, and while she credits her cup for helping to pull out her IUD, here she cites long strings as a contributing factor.
As mentioned earlier, the tampon/sponge user accidentally yanked out her 5 year old Paragard thinking she had a tampon in... read her story here.

While the results here suggest that using internal protection does not increase expulsion risk, it is still probably wise to use caution when removing a tampon, cup, or sponge.

IUD and period protection poll over at iud_divas
I've posted two polls including a "period protection" poll over at iud divas.
There's been a few posts or replies over there suggesting that menstrual cups contribute to expulsion - I think mainly from people who don't use cups - so I'm trying to get a broader view of the picture than I was able get here.
Thanks to those on this board for the feedback on my previous posts - it helped me formulate the new polls.

First Cup for My Sister

I have a DivaCup, and I love it. I just recently got to use it on my period (today's the first day!). I cut off the stem completely and inserted it when I had a little spotting last night, and when I woke up, I had a full cup. No leaks, though my feminine moisture (whatever you call it) bypasses the cup like it's not even there. I thought it was a leak, but it was just, you know, the clear stuff. Anywho, I've been thinking about getting my 13 year old sister her first cup. She hasn't started her period yet, but I wanted her to have a cup ready as an option. She knows all about cups, but isn't sure which one she wants. I've heard that just about every cup is good for beginners. I'm leaning towards LadyCup/ColoredCup, or even the Femmcup. What do you ladies think? I think I'll do a poll for this one, but comments are welcomed lots!

Cups and IUDs - a poll!
There have been a few questions lately about which cup is best/safest to use with an IUD.
I think one of the biggest fears for IUD users who want to start using a cup...and for cup users who are thinking about an IUD... is whether or not cup use encourages IUD expulsion.
So here's a poll for cup users who have or have had an IUD.
Hopefully it will ease some fears and provide a clearer picture of cup use, IUDs, and expulsion.

So how do you lube your cup? I've tried doing the whole cup (except the inside)but it's just a mess and it slips away. I've tried lube'in myself but it's not enough. So I've given up on lube and have just been inserting with the water left on the cup after I wash it. It works but it still hurts a little. I cant seem to find a way to use lube without my cup flying out of my hand. So how do you ladies insert your cups? With or without lube? And which way works best for you?

Hiya all!

There have been many interesting polls here and I thought I'd add one more. Since here it seems that menstrual cups are better known by university students, I thought it would be interesting if that is the general way. Are we the creme de la creme? :)

I also thought it would be cool to see where people are from. I added the cup manufacturing countries separately to see is we have a massive population here from those countries.

And sorry guys if there is something wrong with the poll, I'm still learning how to become a poster after long-time lurking...

EDIT: Ok, so post according to the school you're IN, not the one you've completed. Sorry, English isn't my first language...

two things
Hey guys!  Or, gals, I guess.  I was trying to avoid my usual "y'all" there.  haha anyway...

This occurred to me last night.  The only time I'm not using my cup during my flow is when I'm in the shower (my preferred time to change it and really clean it) and another part of the day while I'm cleaning it.  Last night I had cramps (and gas) so bad that I couldn't bear the thought of replacing my cup once I'd gotten it out.  So I resorted to wearing a pad for the first time in about a year.

Which makes me realize, it's something close to my first Divaversary!  Also I'm realizing that regular users can do polls now!  So here goes:

My other question is this:  I've seen a lot of stuff recently about the cervix sitting inside the cup.  How do you make that happen?  It seems like my cervix sits low and gets in the way of the cup.  I've not trimmed the stem, but that sucker (often, sometimes, not always) just pokes all around at the entrance of my vagina and sometimes is uncomfortable or irritating to sit down.  I want it to sit higher, but I don't know if it can.  I do know that if I do have a shortish vagina, as I assume, the Diva may not be the best cup, given its size.

And, on a tangent, I really want to know what my vagina is like in comparison to others.  I have no idea how large or small it is or if my cervix sits high or low or even if I'm "tight" or not.  You can't exactly go prodding about inside someone else's junk without a fancy degree, and even a partner can't tell you because (geez, I hope) the ones s/he's been messing around in are aroused and not in resting or normal mode.  Even more on a tangent:  I know it's perfectly normal for penises to hang to the side and have a curve in either direction or no curve at all, and most are at least a little to one side.  Is a cervix like that too?  I know it's been there just hanging out for 20 years or so, but this is suddenly such a new part of my body to me!  I had no idea what it was before I started using the cup, and honestly I thought there was a "right path" and "wrong path" down there before I realized it was some almost-conical hanging-down organ thing with a purpose when I had to really start fiddling around with the cup.  But that is my lamentation about the knowledge of the female body and my frustration about education on it, whether for its owners, caretakers, or lovers.

I think this is my first post here, but I really appreciate all the questions I've seen since I've been a member!  Thanks, everyone, for this community :)

We're at 3400 members, I think it's about time we did one of these. I'll try to do them every now and again, maybe twice yearly or at every 500 new members or so. We'll see how it goes.

With thanks to the [info]sextips mods from whom I pinched some questions.

Answers will be viewable to community members. ALL questions can be skipped if they do not apply or you would rather not say. Poll question nitpicking is welcomed and will be taken on board, but I would rather keep discussion here focused on the content so I may screen the exchanges if they get too long.

Now, to make this entry mine, just wanted to share this tidbit... I was talking to my new boss and somehow menstrual cups came up (I've been working this job for all of three weeks and already I'm proselytizing, lol). She told me that when she was in Thailand, her bus stopped and they all got off to use the toilet. Beside all the women's toilets were these MOUNTAINS of used menstrual products. Not only did it look unpleasant, but it was also summer... in Thailand... apparently the smell was ATROCIOUS. Now there's an image I'd like to see on every pro-cup poster, amiright?

A lot of women here believe that using a menstrual cup has made their periods lighter/shorter/easier. Mine has definitely become lighter and less painful since I got my Mooncup. I don't like to say it was the cup, but I've been taking the same contraceptive pill I'd been on for two years already when I got the cup and my diet, weight and level of exercise haven't changed a lot so it's a good contender.

In the interests of being more scientific I want to find out what proportion are having easier periods vs. those having more difficult ones (although as mostly satisfied cup users we're a biased sample). If you've just had one or two periods where you've noticed a difference, wait a bit before voting. If you've experienced a change that's likely to have been due to something else, like starting hormonal contraception, please sit this one out.

Volume of blood could be a difficult one since disposable protection makes it look like there's more, but I have much less blood now than in my first few cycles with the cup, so I've included the question.

I want one! Help please?
Hey everyone! So I've been considering this for a while and have finally decided to get a menstrual cup! However, I only recently found out that there's more out there than just the DivaCup. After doing some reading, I've narrowed it down to the Lunette and the Mooncup UK... care to help me out? Cookies for partakers!! :D

Hi all,

Your opinions please!

This community is officially for asking about or otherwise discussing the use of menstrual cups. But we get a lot of posts that don't fit that format.

Research paper time!
Hi there! I wonder if some of you could take a few minutes out of your busy schedules to help with some research.

I'm a grad student writing a research proposal about squicky health issues/stuff that is uncomfortable to talk about and how online communication can aid "paradigm shifts" (how people change long-held attitudes). As my main focus I'm examining menstrual cups (because, hello, you will pry my DivaCup out of my cold, dead hands).

I'm trying to find out how people talk about menstruation and what hinders discussion. This community is a great example of how chicks can speak more freely, so hopefully I can do some actual research later about what helped us get that way.

I'd like to get a handle on what types of issues/hindrances I should bring up. Could you please answer some or all of these questions, in as little or as much detail as you'd like? Don't worry about duplicating answers; just talk about whatever you like.

Thanks so much!

Onwards! )
