I'm so excited for my second convert!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I learned that I wasn't bleeding nearly as much as I thought I was!
Which tells me that the tampons just weren't absorbing the way they are supposed to. When I'd use tampons, I'd fill a super one after like 4 hours!! Or less! I always had to wear a back-up pad because I knew I would leak.
Based on this information, I thought I bled a lot.
This isn't true. The tampons just weren't completely filling. It's like they were only filling the outter layer. And then they'd start to leak.
I wore the Orangecup for 4 hours before I could change it and it was halfway full. I could've gone a little longer. Oh how I love cups!
As so many women before me, I'm thrilled I learned about cups and decided to give them a try. I wish I'd known about them sooner. It was a little intimidating getting that intimate with my own body, but I'm glad I've done it. Cups are great and I intend to start spreading the word!
Based on my estimations of my body tallied against the information on the sizing chart, coupled with my own personal crusade to buy locally whenever possible, I bought a Diva Cup (size 2) from my local health food co-op.
And people, it was an unmitigated success!
By some stroke of luck, the Diva fit me well and I had no stem-poky-problems. There were a couple times when I couldn't get the cup to open, but a removal and re-insertion did the trick. The 7-fold works much better than the other folds I tried (C-fold and punch-down--I didn't feel like trying anything too fancy right off the bat). The only time I had any trouble with removal was the very first attempt on my pre-period dry run. And I think that was largely due to me trying to figure out how to maneuver my long-ish nails around the cup without injury.
In another stroke of luck, this was one of my Bad Periods, which I have a few times a year: near-debilitating cramps (which keep me awake at night), heavy flow, exhaustion, headaches, nausea...the whole nasty deal. But I think the cup was easier on my body--and it certainly kept me somewhat interested and entertained! So much better than feeling a little repulsed by the numbers of tampons I've added to landfills over the years. I did use a pantyliner every day (and I was grateful for that), but I would've done that with tampons, too. I don't imagine that habit will change, although I might move to washable pantyliners eventually.
Thank you so much,
I did ok. Getting it in was a little tricky. And I certainly am not a pro yet, but I got it in pretty good. Was even able to get it out. Due to reading here, I was terrified of pulling on it without breaking the suction, but I don't think I've had that problem yet.
I did practice runs of emptying it at work and did ok there. So that was a plus.
Overall, I'm pretty proud of myself. I look forward to when it is as easy/simple/old hat as tampons were. But for now, I'm doing well.
Today was the first day of actual bleeding. It is happening right now as a matter of fact. At this very moment. I am in immense pain. Which is the only disappointment I'm having in regards to cups: I had finally broken down and bought one because my cramps were so bad last month I had considered a trip to the ER for a shot. And I heard so many of you say it helped your cramps. I decided I'd do whatever it took to make my cramps stop. Sadly, I don't seem to be one of the lucky ones who gets cramp-relief if they wear a cup.
I'm not going to give up on using them. I still like the idea and plus, I spent $41 to get them, so I don't want that money to go to waste. But it is a let down at the moment to be in excruciating pain just like always. *sigh*
The only thing interesting about my first time use: The first night I put the small in, I had had just a tiny, tiny bit of brown spotting. I put the cup in and felt kind bloated. After about an hour, I decided to take it out and try to reinsert. When I took it out, there was some watery blood in the cup and a glob of blood that came out after the cup came out. I thought perhaps I had jump-started my period with the suction from the cup. But I didn't bleed anymore until today. I wonder what that was all about. I'm not a virgin, so I don't think it was my hymen breaking. That was the only event of note in my start to using cups.
Thanks for listening. Thanks all of you for the comm. It definitely made this a better experience. Cuz let me tell ya, the instructions that come with a Ladycup are rather lame-o.
So I took the plunge and bought a DivaCup. I got it Saturday and boiled it as per the instructions. I had thought about doing a dry run with it, but didn't because I was worried that if it hurt or was difficult that I would never try it for real. My cycle started last night, so after refreshing my memory with all the different folds, I tried it. I used a C-fold, held my breath and -- it went right in and popped open. I couldn't feel it inside me at all. I tried a couple of kegels and it felt vaguely squishy, but I had no sense of something actually being there. It was no problem at all. I wore it all night, with no leaks or anything, removed it this morning, again with no problem, emptied it, rinsed it and reinserted it. I had to twist it a bit to open it this morning, it didn't pop open the way it did last night, but even that was easy.
I'm astonished at how easy it is. I wasn't planning on wearing it to work today, but if I don't get any leaks before I head out, I probably will. It's very comfortable and clean, without the weird sticky, dry feeling I get from tampons.
I do feel some pressure against the front wall of my vagina, and I'm worried about getting a UTI (I get them frequently). I also feel a more frequent urge to pee. I'm being careful to wash my hands and to urinate after inserting it, and I'm taking cranberry supplements (I take them by the fistful every time I have sex, and they are very helpful in preventing my UTIs). I'm hoping that small problem will resolve itself as I get used to it.
I do have a question: Do you think this more frequent urge to pee will go away? It's not uncomfortable, but it's bothersome. It's exactly like when I have a UTI and constantly feel like I need to use the bathroom, only it's not painful the way a UTI is.
The ring stem was great and easy to remove, but if you get one, just be careful with it, as I think they are more fragile than I gave it credit for. I opted for the ball stem on the large I'm waiting to order.
Also, during my period I noticed that after like two or three days there was hardly any blood flow, sometimes my cup would be near empty with just a brownish tan discharge in it...has anyone else noticed that they stop bleeding for long periods of time without being done with their period? The next day I started bleeding again , and could wear the cup for good ten or more hours without coming close to overflow. I guess with pads and tampons I thought we bled continually...maybe also it was just an off thing, and this period will be different. Thoughts?
As I said, my period started yesterday and was so happy about wearing the cup overnight. Which I did. I woke up during the night with a strong need to urinate, but not much would come out. It was rather painful to pass urine (or rather uncomfortable), so I decided to take the cup out, and it allowed more urine to pass, but it was still a little sore.
This is the strange bit. Whilst I was sitting on the loo (after removing my cup), I felt nauseous and suddenly, I passed out on the floor. My blood pressure suddenly lowered and I was sweating profusely, but my skin felt ice cold. I managed to get myself up on my feet and tried to go back to bed, but fainted again on the doorstep. I quickly gained consciousness and pulled myself up to bed. My boyfriend wakes up at this stage, but I didn't want to alarm him. I got in bed and I felt as if my heart rate was slowing down, my arms felt numb, my ears were ringing, and my head was about to explode. I was terrified. After a couple of minutes, these symptoms seemed to disappear and my heart rate , albeit slower than usual, felt more stable. I am so scared now, I have no idea what could've caused all this, I do not want to think it has anything to do with my cup being there overnight.
I woke up with a terrible headache and didn't go to work in the morning.
I don't know what to think, i cannot blame the cup for this, but I don't know what to think. Is there any remote chance that I have TSS?? I know that's associated with tampons and absorption, but the symptoms I observed, I have checked online and are very similar to those of TSS. I would really appreciate someone helping me out. I am thinking of ringing the Mooncup helpline and speak to a nurse now.
Thanks for listening and I would appreciate any input.
Okay so I purchased a Diva Cup today. I'm 17 and a virgin so I got the smaller one... But I cannnnnott get it in. Like, I've gotten it pretty far, but I can't get the stem to be even with the opening of my vagina. I was literally screaming in pain, lol. I still hurt down there. Probably the most painful thing my vagina has ever had to go through. I need tips on how to get it in because I need to get the hang of this quickly! I'm going away for christmas and my friend wants to go to a water park and tampons dont work for me and I'm positive I'll have my period when we go so... I should have got my period like, yesterday but it hasn't come yet so I'm trying it before I have it. I did the 2nd fold the intructions said to use but honestly, it is KILLING me! :| Please help!
Also, I bought the soap stuff you're supposed to clean the cup with... could I use that for lubrication or is that bad since it's soap? Haha.
so i sanitized it within ten minutes of taking it out of the package so i take a dry run, haha. i used the seven fold, it seemed like it wasn't popping open so i took it out and tried the c fold. there we go! it popped open and i was surprised how far up in my vagina it went naturally (i didn't have to kegel it up there at all). it felt like it was sitting right beneath my cervix, and except for the "oh hey i just put something in my vagina" feeling, i couldn't tell it was there. taking it out was not so pleasant. i have short fingers, it was way up there... i was sitting on the toilet half-laughing, half-cursing my vagina as i tried to simultaneously push and pull the cup out. that suction is serious business, y'all! i eventually got it out but now i am pretty sore. i'm not a virgin, but i haven't had sex since august and it is kind of difficult to get two fingers in there (also i have never used a cup before in case you couldn't tell). i tried to get the smallest cup possible; does my body just need to get used to it? should i go have some more sex (not opposed to this plan, lol)?
overall, though, it was a good experience. i'm actually excited to get my period!
a big thank you to this community and everyone in it, it has been so, so helpful :)
this is day 4ish of my period and i am hooked, no issues putting in or taking out, i must have bought the right size for my body (over 30 mom of two). i am a heavy bleeder so i have to dump every 2 hours right now, in the beginning of my cycle it was every 10ish. happy to report no leakage yet!
i have become a sort of cup advocate to my friends at work and my family (husband getting sick of details let me tell you LOL)
i think that even if you are unsure and uncomfortable you should make the jump like i did and buy yourself a cup (mine's the diva 2) get familiar with your body and the fit during your cycle, dry runs are a MUST, i spent days off and on with mine in getting used to the feel.
i have to tell you that you ladies made my decision and my purchase and this transition sooooo much easier than it would have been trying to wing it on my own, thank you very much!
I am a 30 year old mom of two. I decided to give the diva cup a shot last month mainly out of desperation as it was my 1st postpartum period after the birth of my 2nd child and tampons weren't working at all. I would leak in a matter of minutes and the tampon would be virtually dry. With my age and having birthed two children I went for the size 2 diva. I didn't start using it until day 3 of my period and at that point the flow was at a minimum. The first day didn't go so well with leaking issues and I was wondering what I had gotten myself into, but the next day I finally got it to work with no leaks (even though there wasn't much left at that point) and was ecstatic. I was actually looking forward to trying it again from the start of my flow the next month and was a little bummed that I was 2 weeks late (still breastfeeding at 14 months and hormones are still wacky!)! So I start from day 1 this month and this is day 3 and let's just say I am so ridiculously close to throwing it off the balcony and never looking back! I've spent more time in the bathroom in 3 days than one should have to spend in months. My flow is extremely heavy this month and already on day 3 it's not letting up where as last month I was close to being done. I don't think that's the problem though as the cup isn't really even filling up. I've read as much as possible, watched the youtube video on insertion and pretty much tried everything. I did get it to work leak free for about 4 hours the other night before bed after trying all the "tricks", but after starting again the next morning I was back at square one. I'm inserting it towards my tailbone, I'm feeling all the way around to make sure it is popping open and it is, I'm pushing it in and out a few times as well to make sure it's suctioned, I trimmed the stem one notch so that I could try and wear it lower without poking. This morning I went 30 minutes without the dreaded warm rush instead of a couple of minutes like usual so it seems to be working for a short time before something malfunctions. I'm starting to think (sadly) that maybe even the large diva is too small after childbirth:( Even when I place it as low as possible it rides up a lot when I go to take it out, even in a short amount of time. After wearing it overnight it goes up so high that I almost panic. Thankfully a few pushes and I can find it. Is it worth giving the large lunette a try since it seems to be bigger? I'm tempted just to give sea pearls a try and giving up on a menstrual cup all together as my patience is wearing thin and I'm sure my 2 kids are as tired of mommy being in the bathroom as I am! Any advice?? TIA:)
( And here is the post! )
Like any new cup wearer, I do have a few questions I hope you lovely ladies can answer:
(1) I normally wear a Nuvaring, and usually have to insert it a day or two before my cycle is over. Aside from seeming like it'll be a bit crowded in there, what is the best way to REMOVE the cup without pulling out the Nuvaring? I remove while I'm in the shower so no worries about it dropping in the toilet, but since my entire vag is angled sharply to the left getting correct positioning on the darn thing is a hassle ANYWAY.
(2) I got some feminine wipes to keep with me in case I have to remove my cup in public and don't have the luxury of a sink in the stall with me. They say that they are gentle enough for ladybits, but are they gentle enough for the INNER ladybits? I've only had one yeast infection in the two and someodd decades I've been alive and I'd like to keep it that way for as long as possible; it was not an enjoyable experience that I'd love to relive again and again. I'd like to avoid taking a bloody lump to a public sink to rinse, but I'll do it if it means avoiding a yeast infection caused by residue from feminine wipes.
(3) I don't expect this to be a problem since I've had no problems thus far, but what is a good water-based lubricant that I can use in case I need one? It turns out that all the personal lubricants I have are silicone-based.
Thanks, ladies, and THANK YOU for such an informative community! I probably never would have gotten the courage to buy and use a cup without the wealth of information available here.
I'm a 15 year old, and therefore need a lot of information about insertion and removal. I'm somewhat nervous, but I'm willing to try and try hard.
I have a lot of trouble, and if anyone has any ideas to help, that would be nice as well.
I'm sorry if I am coming off as immature. I hope I'm not; I'm just very shy.
Thank you for reading.
First time poster, first time user... enlightenment and all.
A little while ago I was referred here by a member (hiiiiii). I'd vaguely heard of cups before, but never really considered using them. Well, I did some research and ordered a small Ladycup "Lotos" - the first couple of dry runs were painful and disappointing (despite using lube), so I decided to put it away for a while. I think I'd been rushing it... definitely needed practice. Aunt Flo finally showed up this week, and I figured out the triangle fold works perfectly. Yay for periods being significantly less gross with no risk of TSS! I can't feel a thing, but the real test was using it during training today. I'm a weightlifter/strength athlete and I take my training seriously. Absolutely ZERO leakage or pain, and I could front squat like the hardcore meathead I am.
( Pictures of the Ladycup Lotos! ...and the hilarious sticker that comes along with it. )
In conclusion, this community is extremely kickass, and menstrual cups have officially opened my eyes. THANK YOU. <3
Anyways, after my dry run I decided to see where my cervix was just because my diva cup was up pretty high (at least that's what I thought). I could barely touch the stem. Is that normal? I didn't have a problem taking it out or anything (it kinda felt like i was giving birth lol), but is that normal to sit up kind of high?
I was looking into cups after getting so sick of cloth pad laundry and this is by far the best and most informative source with so many of you wonderful women. After browsing around for hours and hours, I finally decided on a larger size Lunette (Selene, because it's pretty blue!) and I was able to find a link to a site that sent them to the US.
I'm not even done with my first cycle using the cup, but I am so hooked. With all the insight available on here, I was able to get things worked out within hours. Got it in perfect the first time, not so perfect the second time, and after about 5 minutes of trial and error the third time, figured out how to fold and the angle to insert to get it in there just right!
It's so great! I was a little nervous because I was out and about and active all day the first day, but other than that one tweak (which I was at home for, much easier to deal with) things went awesome.
Thank you every one!
So far so good.
Insertion was absolutely no problem: I used the c-fold. It was even easier once I figured you only need to push the top rim past the pubic bone, and not the entire thing! Once the rim is past the pubic bone and I let go, the cup opens out and rises into pretty much the correct poisition and seals instantly. I usually push it at the base a little more once in though, just so I can't feel what little of the stem is left outside my vagina. I haven't cut the whole stem off just yet - although I think I will eventually - as I wanted to get a little more practise at removal first.
Wearing it has been a dream - can't feel a thing. In some ways I'm even less conscious of the MC than a tampon, because you don't have anything hanging out of your vagina and are not aware of being dried out inside. I'd say the only flaw I can think of at this point is that it seems to make me cramp a bit more than usual; this is probably just because it is bigger than a tampon. I'm also not fond of the air-sucky feeling when the cup opens out inside. Ugh.
Removal is definitely the most tricky part. So far, I've been having to full-squat in order to get a grip of the base properly, but then I stand up while I ease the cup out. This isn't always easy, and can sometimes be a bit painful, especially if I don't angle the cup enough and it stretches me out - ouch.
I have had no problems with leaks yet, and i was really easy to clean it under the tap. Might be a bit trickier tomorrow though, once I'm back at work and in public, rather than at home.
I like it!
This morning, I hadn't started bleeding yet, but I figured that I would later today and decided to try my cup. At first, I tried to put it in standing up and failed miserably. So, I put it in sitting down, and had a little trouble, but finally got it in. It was a little uncomfortable because of the stem, but, I decided to leave it and just see if it was something I could get used to.
So, this evening (I wore it all day :)), I was in the shower, and I decided to just try to remove/reinsert it in there. I took it out, and when I checked, there was blood in the bottom of the cup! I was SO excited because normally, even using tampons, I would leak ALL the time. So, I washed it, trimmed the stem a little, and decided to try to reinsert it standing up again.
It practically placed itself! While I was standing!!! And I barely even knew it was there. I can actually bend over and sit down without worrying!
In any case, I just wanted to say thanks to everybody who helped me figure this out. :)
And, if anyone is thinking about getting a cup and hasn't yet, it's awesome!
Thanks, Sara
Also, does anyone else have discomfort with removing their menstrual cup? Once I've gotten up to the rim of the cup, I'm not quite sure how to make it small enough to be comfortable removing. It kinda just ... pops out, and it's rather painful. I don't want to squeeze the edges together because I'm afraid that, once I'm using it for my actual period, everything will spill.
Basically, I just need some help. I'm so confused and PMS is making me frustrated to the point of tears with this thing.
My period is due in 6 days. I'm excited and a bit nervous about my forthcoming new menstrual experience.
Is there anything I should really know beforehand? Any golden rules?
I'm not planning on doing a dry run. Just going to wait till the day.
I'm a bit confused as to how high it should sit. One of my pet hates is being able to feel a tampon inside me, if I haven't inserted it high enough. From what I've read, it seems that this is a problem for many people. I'm not very familiar with my cervix.
The instructions say low, but everyone else seems to say high. How the hell do I know if it's in the right place?!
Thanks in advance x
A few facts about me… I’m eighteen, and a virgin. I’ve used tampons for a few years now, but a friend told me about menstrual cups a couple of weeks ago and it sounded like a wonderful alternative. Needless to say, I purchased a Divacup last week and it finally arrived yesterday.
Maybe this was a bad idea, but I tried to insert it last night. My period isn’t going to start for about a week and a half, but I was eager to try my new investment out.
To my surprise, it actually went in after only about three or four minutes of trying. The push down and seven fold didn’t work for me, but the c-fold worked fine, and as far as I know I got a good seal.
When I was convinced it was in right, I stood up and walked around for a minute or so, and I couldn’t feel a thing! Then I went back into the bathroom to remove it.
Here’s what happened… I squeezed the tip of my Divacup and slowly tried to ease it down and out. It didn’t feel like I had broken the suction yet, but I kept trying, and after maybe a minute it finally slid out.
Just as it was coming out though, I felt a little pain and maybe a couple tablespoons of blood came gushing out. I stood up to clean it off of the toilet seat, pretty unsure about what had happened, but knowing that I didn’t just want to sit there in a pool of blood. And I don’t know… maybe I stood up too fast? But next thing I knew I had passed out right there on the bathroom floor.
I’m thinking I broke my hymen, and I was wondering if you guys agree. My parents were never open about sex (or genitalia in general), so I’m really quite ignorant about it all. Any insight on the matter?
Note: I’m Christian, and although I’m saving myself for marriage, I’m really not too worried about my hymen breaking (if that’s even what happened). My religion places more importance on the emotional aspect of sex than it does on the physical, and I’m sure a broken hymen isn’t going to matter much when my time comes. So to clarify… that’s not what worries me. I really just want to figure out what happened.
Thank you so much for your help...
I got my Diva Cup in July, before camp... I'm a camp counselor at a conservation school.. environmental education summer camp for teens. And we do a lot of water safety and canoeing stuff, which I usually skip out on, because I outright refuse to use tampons, being that they're all bleachey and dryouty, and I ALWAYS manage to get my period midway through camp (one week session). So! I got a Diva Cup because I was so interested in the idea of never having to buy packages of pads, and it's sustainable! I remember hearing a statistic of an average tonnage thrown out of feminine hygiene products per year.. and it really threw me back. It's such a minor thing that we all complain about and yet contributing so much towards! Ridiculous.
So, hence buying the Diva Cup. I didn't test it out or anything before bringing it with me to camp... which I really should have. It's actually kind of a funny story, and I live to tell the tale! So I get my period.. shit. Of course. Run to bathroom. Fidget with this thing for at least 45 minutes and almost in tears because we had a program to attend and it was rushy and I was freaking out and so an and so forth.. I finally get it in. I read numerous times that it was IMPOSSIBLE for this thing to get lost. But I was still coming down from my hysteria, so it wasn't hard to get back when I found that I had gotten it in, but now I couldn't find the damn thing. So I go to the kitchen and tell the assistant director: I lost something. We have this rule at camp.. you lose something, you have to sing for it after dinner. She gets all excited, chipper, "oh, someone's going to have to siiiinnnggg...!" Then I say, I don't think so. It's not something you're going to find. So I tell her what happened, and she's never even HEARD of a menstrual cup, so she doesn't know what the hell to tell me. Luckily, someone was around that has a good friend that is a doctor. She gives me some instructions over the phone on how to get it out but says it's probably fine. Nope, I wanted it OUT. So I got it out after a little while and bit of pain.
Needless to say, this prevented me from ever wanting to try it again. It's been sitting in a drawer for awhile. But then I came across you guys!! You all definitely cleared some stuff up, and I've finally got it, I think! It feels slightly off, but I'm pretty sure it's in my head because the first time was so distressing. Will see! But thank you all sooo much! And kudos if you actually got through this whole post. :)
