Mod post: some new tags, and posts about cup offers and deals
Hi all,

Two things!

Firstly, some new tags

I've just gone through the tag list on the right and reorganised it a bit. I think it makes much more sense now, but please let me know what you think.

Here are the new tags from the past few months which I've just added to the sidebar:
a dozen new tags for your browsing pleasure )

I'll go back and populate these as far as I can. Help is appreciated. Don't forget all community members can tag posts - your own and other people's, old and current posts. The more stuff we can get tagged, the better the resource this community becomes. I'm also going to start being more active about linking common questions to the tagged history, feel free to join me in this.

If you have any comments about the tags list or the reorganisation on the navigation bar, don't hesitate to shout.

Secondly: posts about good deals/offers on purchasing cups

A few guidelines about this.

Posts about good deals you've found, coupons and so on are entirely on topic and welcome here. (Please tag them 'Where to buy'!). That includes coupon codes that give the member who gave them out some kind of kickback.

However:
1) We request that you be upfront about any kickback you might be receiving. Most people don't mind, lots of people are actively happy to help you out, but everyone wants to know.
2) Since these are only interesting to the minority of people who are interested in a deal for that particular cup/country, we also request that you put them behind a cut. So an example post would look like:

Subject: Divacup deal from exampleshop.com

(Divacup for only $somenumber, including delivery!) or
(Excellent offer for anyone here in $country) or
(Cupon code to get 5% off at $cupseller), etc.

If you don't know how to use an lj-cut, please see this section of the LJ FAQ.

I'll be putting this request in the userinfo.

Thanks,
[info]scien

New mods announcement
Hi all,

Please welcome your new tag monkeys overlords, [info]amanita03 and [info]lintilla! Both very familiar faces I'm sure (or will be as soon as they comment and you can see their icons), I am very glad to have them on board.

To everyone else who posted: thank you very much. It's lovely to see that there are loads of very capable people here. I'm sorry I don't need a team of twenty :)

Now that we are three, we have some new ways of contacting us that will be quicker than just trying your luck with PMing one of us:
  1. We have an open post which we will be watching. You do not need to join the community to post there, and you can comment anonymously.

  2. We still have the email address: menstrual_cups at livejournal dot com.

  3. And you can of course talk to us as you see us around in the community.

I'm also taking this opportunity to make a minor addition to the rules:

We also request that you not post more than twice a week. We understand that you may have lots of questions at first, but please do take the time to read through previous posts to get the information you need. We also encourage you to ask your follow up questions in comments to people on your original post, rather than applying to the whole community again.

Woohoo! *throws confetti*

Want to help me moderate [info]menstrual_cups?
Hi guys,

So I've finally given in and faced up to the fact that I could use a little help around here. This place is wonderful and would I'm sure survive a nuclear apocalypse let alone a mod not being around as much as she'd like, but you guys deserve more.

Click through if you're interested in more info. Warning, is long )
Thanks everyone, I love you all :)

Trolly mctrollerkins
Hi all,

So as you may have noticed, we have been trolled. What fun, what joy. We clearly must be internet celebs to receive such patronage from the ONTD crowd.

To those who emailed and messaged me about it: thank you, it was very helpful. I'm sorry my response wasn't instant, it was 5-7am my time when these posts appeared.

To those who had fun with them: hee hee. You made cleaning those posts out enjoyable instead of irksome, it was much appreciated.

The posts have all been deleted and the trolls banned. In addition, posting is currently moderated. While I'm afraid I can't be constantly glued to my computer this weekend, I do promise to get to all posts within 12 hours.

If you see any trolling comments, please PM or email me and I'll take care of it ASAP.

Comments/questions just shout!

[info]scien

Edit: If anyone is feeling disappointed that they missed the fun, [info]zhukora1 has posted some caps here.

Userinfo update
Hi all,

I finally got round to rewriting the userinfo. Please take a look and let me know what you think!

I also tweaked the colour scheme a little bit - making the sidebar more prominent and toning down the immense pinkness a bit.

Questions and comments about any of the above, or anything else for that matter, are welcome as always :)

We can has rules
Hi all,

A note from your mod.

On a recent post, I've had to give out more warnings for rudeness than I have in my entire time here before put together. So, it looks like it's time for a reminder.

What are the community rules?

I'm so glad you asked.

They say:

No rudeness, no trolling. Comments that criticize others, are judgmental, posted to purposely start drama or are otherwise inflammatory ARE NOT WELCOME.
Believe me, I understand why the quote in that post raised everyone's blood pressure. And because it's not to his face, it might feel okay to call the guy who wrote it rude names. But, well, it isn't. And that's that.

I would like to particularly point out that male-bashing is no exception to the above rule. It is still rude. It is also desperately insensitive to the male-identified members of this community. And lots of us here have very supportive and enthusiastic male friends and partners, who we don't enjoy seeing insulted.

I've also added a new line to this rule to clarify something that has been bothering me for a while. It says:

...This includes being rude about other menstrual options such as disposable pads and tampons. While we are enthusiastic about our cup use here, there is no need to call other choices gross or irresponsible.
I mean it. You are welcome to say that you always found them gross, or that you find them gross now, or any other comments about your own tastes and preferences. But please remember that these really are your own personal tastes and preferences, and not universal.

Calling a choice that millions of women use (and some of them use as a choice, not because they're unaware of other options) 'gross' or 'disgusting' is not respectful, and it's not menstruation- and female-positive. Basically, it's no more acceptable coming from you than it is from people who disparage cup use.

Why were some comments warned and some similar ones not?

It's a judgment call, and subjective. I warned the comments that struck me as objectionable enough that I couldn't just leave them. If you think I missed one that was equally bad, or warned one that should not have been warned, please let me know.

Finally, this place is not your personal army.

As I see it, we are here to help out people who have questions about cup use. We are also here to discuss related issues, both practical and theoretical. We are not here to get enraged because someone is wrong on the internet. Believe me, there are thousands more like him. If you want to send people strongly worded emails explaining the error of their ways you're more than welcome to, but please, no calls-to-arms against individual bloggers here. (Companies and corporations are something else entirely).

I hope that clarifies things. Please feel free to chip in with any questions or comments. You can also always message me if you prefer to talk privately.

Hi all :)

Lately I've been chatting to the various cup companies, which is a bit of a new development. It might be just me, but I get the impression that cups are on the verge of becoming fairly mainstream. I've certainly seen traffic here climb steadily, there's a profusion of new companies and products with a wider variety of choice, and it seems like everyone is doing good business. Mooncup are advertising on the London Underground and terrestrial TV for heaven's sake!

This is really exciting and it's making me fidgety. I've decided to put some more of my time into this than I'm already doing and I have a few projects planned:
  • Turn the menstrual cups website into a really good, thorough, browsable resource

  • Revamp this community's userinfo

  • Sort out discount/affiliate links with all the cup companies

  • Start promoting the website/community

Well, I'm prepared to put the work in, but I also need your input on some of these to help me choose what direction I go in.

It's absolutely you guys who keep the community the awesome place that it is. Please keep on showing newbies the ropes, starting interesting discussions, and generally making this a fun place to hang out. Without that, this entire post would be pointless. It's appreciated by your mod as well as the posters you help!

Thank you all :)

Stuff from your modly mod of modness
Hi all! I have a few unrelated things to say.

Firstly, to get this out of the way:

Recently I've noticed and had pointed out to me a surprising number of occasions when people are screening or deleting comments, and deleting whole posts. Please don't do this. This is a community. We are very happy to help out, but it's very bad netiquette to just get what you need and then disappear away with no trace. When you delete a post you're deleting other people's words as well as your own (which isn't fair), and it prevents other people who might have benefitted from being able to read and learn from what was posted (which isn't helpful). I can't stop people from doing this, but I would really rather you didn't. If this is problematic for you, for example if you want stronger anonymity, let me know and we'll sort something out.

And definitely don't do this if you're buying or selling. You will panic people and call your good intentions into question.

Secondly, and much more excitingly! Like [info]purple_obsidian, I too got my Miacup in the post today. It's exactly as she describes - the invoice looks like it's a greeting card in disguise, and the box looks like a jewelry box! Lovely. They are definitely going for the upmarket sort of appeal, it looks like a real indulgence and something you wouldn't have any qualms giving as a gift. I wonder if the other cup companies will follow suit with 'deluxe' packaging type stuff.

Unfortunately I'm pretty busy at the moment, but I will do a post with measurements and pics as I get a chance.

Finally: I recently posted a loong post in my journal about what I've learned from this community about cups and why they're getting popular. Please feel free to take a look and stick your oar in, I'm really interested in any input you guys have about this:

Demographics poll!
We're at 3400 members, I think it's about time we did one of these. I'll try to do them every now and again, maybe twice yearly or at every 500 new members or so. We'll see how it goes.

With thanks to the [info]sextips mods from whom I pinched some questions.

Answers will be viewable to community members. ALL questions can be skipped if they do not apply or you would rather not say. Poll question nitpicking is welcomed and will be taken on board, but I would rather keep discussion here focused on the content so I may screen the exchanges if they get too long.

New tag by request - 'cervix position'
Hi all,

I've created a new tag, 'cervix position'.

Just so you all know, all community members can tag posts. I go through them every now and again and tag them in a slightly obsessive manner, but if you find yourself with a spare few minutes to go through the current front page, or you notice the post you're replying to isn't tagged, it would be great if you could help out! Particularly since the volume of posts here seems to be picking up impressively, and I can't always spend as much time on LJ as I would like.

Thanks everyone, you're fantastic :)

Hi all,

Your opinions please!

This community is officially for asking about or otherwise discussing the use of menstrual cups. But we get a lot of posts that don't fit that format.

Another mod post
Hi all!

I've been tidying up the userinfo and tags. Let me know if you have any comments or suggestions. In particular please let me know if any of the links are broken.

Also: I want to use the 'FAQ' tag to tag around 2-6 posts that would be useful for a complete newbie to read, and link to it from the userinfo. To that end, I've removed the posts that talk about FAQs instead of being FAQs in themselves. If you see any posts you think would work for this purpose, please just go ahead and tag them.

Alternatively, I thought it might be fun to make a post for this purpose where you can all contribute and answer the questions you had back before you became an expert on the topic. Whatever you think would be helpful for someone who's only just heard of the idea and isn't sure what to think. Yay or nay?

By the way - whoever is tagging all the posts before I reach them - you are an angel (or more than one angel?). Thank you very much.

Hi everyone! (all hail your new overlord)
Hi all,

I'm very happy to announce that I am now helping [info]kellybellynet maintain this community.

You'll probably all have seen me around - I've been a regular contributor here since about mid 2004. At the moment I'm a fresh faced recent graduate living in Oxford, UK.

Have no fear, I don't plan on making any significant changes. I think this is already easily one of the friendliest, most helpful and least drama filled community I'm in on LiveJournal. So all this change really means is that if there's spam, rudeness or anything else that needs modly attention you should contact me instead of Kelly, and I will take care of it ASAP.

I do work full time which means I'm unlikely to be online during working hours (9-5 GMT) but I will keep an eye out for anything huge. Contact me via my LJ email or in the open post on my journal.

I will probably tidy up the memories/tags/layout a little bit, but I don't have anything big planned. However, if you have any ideas or suggestions, please do let me know in the comments!

I think that's it really. Thank you everyone for keeping this place so awesome.

Spamming
PLEASE, I know many of you feel strongly about menstrual cups and wish to pass on your love, but it has become necessary for me to remind you guys that spamming other communities by creating either posts or comments that are unwelcome and/or off-topic to promote this community, its sister site (menstrualcups.org) or any other unrelated cup-related site is against the Livejournal terms of service.

I know that I can't control all 2081 of you. All I can ask is for you to please stop.

{EDIT} Just because this has caused some confusion already -- Hi. My name is Kelly. If you're new around here, let me introduce myself as your community maintainer.

I'm sorry cause this post is not about menstrual cups, but I thought it could be interesting cause I think we all love to talk about, explore, take care of our vaginas :)) Well, several months ago, I had found a very interesting link, where they talk about self-exam with a speculum : http://www.fwhc.org/health/selfcare.htm

I find it really interesting. Does anyone have already done it ?
(This page here is also very interesting : http://www.fwhc.org/health/moon.htm)

Slight change in tags
Because there are currently two menstrual cups on the market called a "moon cup," it was brought to our attention that there should be two separate tags specifying which cup is being discussed. Therefore, I've changed the current "mooncup" tag to "mooncup_uk" for the original, UK-version of the Mooncup and created the "moon_cup_keeper" tag for the newer version of the Moon Cup put out by those Keeper people.

In the future, please tag any Mooncup or Moon Cup posts with the correct tag.

If you recently tagged a post with the old "mooncup" tag, and the cup being discussed is the newer Moon Cup, please try to go back and change it. If you are having trouble, please post a link to one of these posts in the comments and I'll go back and change it.

Thank you.

DRAMA = OVER
Okay, I didn't want to drag this out in the open, but ya'll are forcing me to.

I'd like to point out a section of our userinfo page to everyone:
All comments that criticize the life choices of others, are judgemental, posted to purposely start drama or negativity or are otherwise inflammatory ARE NOT WELCOME. If you notice a comment on a post that fits this description, please notify either [info]kellybellynet or [info]elettaria immediately so we may take proper action, and do not "fan the flames" and post a reply. If you break these rules and are admonished, abusing the moderators will not help.
What am I trying to say here?
  1. If you notice any comment or post that seems to be written for the purpose of causing trouble of any sort, contact a mod right away.

  2. In addition, do not continue the cycle by responding to said comment or post, especially if your reply can also be considered as inciting trouble. You are just making things worse by responding to the (intentional or not) bait.

  3. Think before you post -- let your comment sit unposted for an hour and then go back to it. Don't post in the "heat of passion" so to speak, because many comments posted as such aren't exactly nice.

We mods do not sit in front of our computers 24/7, constantly refreshing the community page and reading every single comment on every single post in order to catch this stuff. We rely on you guys to let us know if something happens, and also rely on you guys to keep this place safe and welcoming to everyone.

There are over 1600 members in the community, so it shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone that someone might disagree or take offense to what you say. It also shouldn't surprise anyone that people post things you don't agree with. We all just need to learn to bite our tongues when someone says something we find offensive or that we disagree with, and if the post/comment is really bad (meaning, offensive to a large subset of society) to contact a mod so we may determine if further action is required.

Thanks for reading.

Times article about Mooncups, and some admin stuff
I rang Mooncup to ask if they're investigating the UK Mooncup/US Moon Cup business, and they said they're too busy with all the extra business generated by this article in The Times!

I've also just reported three eBay sellers for keyword spamming (brand name misuse), so with any luck the eBay situation will get less confusing soon.

Does anyone with artistic ability feel like drawing a generic cup to be used in a possible new icon, so that it can be brand-free? Or possibly doing strange graphics modifications to an existing cup photo, making it look so weird that you can't tell which one it is.

I'm working on the user info at the moment. I've just started putting in a more comprehensive list of international suppliers where I can find them (it's still patchy, let me know if you know of any that I've missed), and I'll probably add a picture of the Lunette next. We could really do with a picture of an inserted cup which is anatomically proportionate, as most of the ones out there have the vagina as being much longer than the cup than it really is - in the case of the Lunette's pictures, six times longer, which I calculate would leave my uterus about level with my bra!

I might even get started on the FAQ if I decide to go for real work avoidance. I think one of the first things we need is a comparison of the different cups, perhaps in table form, with size, capacity, and notable differences (e.g. stem length).

We also went through a name change... the community was originally called the_keeper, but soon outgrew the name since it catered to discussions on all the different brands of menstrual cups.

Here's to many more years!

On creating polls
I now have a paid account, so I'll be able to create polls for this comm. I watch it pretty regularly, though I don't always read through every post, so if you want me to create a poll and I don't appear to have noticed, just put up a separate post detailing what you think should go in the poll. From past experience of helping create polls here, it's usually a good idea to put a draft up before turning it into a real poll anyway.

FAQ
FAQ stands for Frequently Asked Questions.

There are some questions that most people that are new to menstrual cups tend to ask... What is a menstrual cup? What different brands are there? How do they work? Even those people that have been using cups for a long time have questions ... How do I clean it? Is it okay that my cup is discolored?

We need to get an FAQ together to answer these often-asked questions... and yes, I need help getting it together.

If you have an idea for a question to add, leave it (along with the answer, if you thought of one) in the comments of this post. Please feel free to also comment on others' ideas, if you have a suggestion to add. I will use your questions, thoughts and ideas to create an "official" FAQ.

Thanks.

[EDIT] You can help build the FAQ by using our wiki -- please read this post to find out how!

Website. Flickr group.
Yes! We now have a website!

http://menstrualcups.org

Right now it's pretty bare -- it just mirrors some of the recent posts here in the community. Eventually I'll pretty it up and have all sorts of information. I plan to have an FAQ, a links page, and all sorts of other stuff. I'm open to ideas!

Yes! We now have a Flickr group!

http://flickr.com/groups/menstrualcups/

So if you have a Flickr account, go join now! If you don't ... get one and join!

Then, if you upload any related photos to your photostream, tag them with "menstrualcups" and add them to the group pool.

Eventually I might impliment some code on the website to automatically grab the photos from the group pool and display them on the site.

Note from a mod
I'm about to go away to Stratford for a couple of months to study, and I'll have very little internet access while I'm there, so I won't be floating around here until the end of March. However, when I get back I'm going to get a paid account, so I'll be able to do community polls.

Community Layout
I'm going to be messing around with the community layout. If things look funky or out-of-place ... that's why.

I'll update this post when I'm done.

[EDIT]: I'm done for now. My head hurts. If anything is outrageously wonky let me know.

[EDIT #2]: Okay, now I'm done. Tweaking comes later.
