Kindess of Strangers
I don't usually whinge about public transport in Melbourne, it's not the greatest but in the scheme of things (particularly in Australia) it does more than it's fair job.

I've hurt my ankle and therefore on crutches. I get on the train today, to get into the city and around 5 people offer me their seats - I declined most because they were aged pensioners, and they need it more than I.

I switch trains at Southern Cross to get onto the Werribee line, where i sit down, with my leg semi up as my ankle was hurting and wanted to eliviate some pressure... one of the pompous guards walks over and yells at me for having my leg up on the seat. Then accuses me for not having a ticket. After producing a ticket, he says "you're travelling on a concession" i was replied "look again buddy.. that's full fare". What a twat.

A few hours later, I get back on the Werribee line, again get off at Southern Cross to make my switch and some impatient commuter pushes me out of his way, so i land face first onto the concrete - thus causing extreme pain to my already sore ankle and causing a rather large bump on my forehead. What annoyed me the most was not one person standing on that platform even thought to help me up, just kept ignoring me.

Perhaps i'm just a "nice person" but if i see someone who's fallen or hurt themselves, i usually stop to ask if they need help.

I hope karma comes and bites you all on the ass!

The End.

I've gotten so sick of it. I get targeted at the gates because I'm on concession and they can tell somehow. It's nearly every morning so these days I don't even bother with pleasantries - I keep my wallet open with my card showing and i just stick it under the noses and keep walking.

Actually the gates have a light that goes off when a concession card gets put through.

they arent targetting you, they are checking if you have the valid cards. The light goes off whenever a concession ticket goes through,

Every morning for months by the same inspectors? It feels like being targeted. Woe be the day I forget my concession card and get fined the same amount as not having a ticket at all.

I get checked up to three times a day - mainly due to the route I use but it gets frustrating. It's that extra attention that I don't think is warranted when I've been doing the right thing for 9 years now. I feel like they're trying to catch me out with six of them lined up and watching me pass through.

My bitterness probably stems from not having enough coins on a tram one day, having an inspector ask me for my ticket as i'm jingling my purse and booking me before I've gone one stop while telling me I'll get out of it if I show them all my other tickets since it was my first and only fare "evasion". I didn't. They really shouldn't tell people things like that when it's not true.

tl;dr - lol connex suk!

I have to agree with this, I get stopped every morning too because I have a concession. It definitely seems like it's targeted, like just because we are young people/students we are going to be cheating the system.

understandable. When I was on a concession and working I felt pretty much the same. I always bought a ticket, and always bought the right ticket, but sometimes left my concession card at home. The inspectors do tend to be located en masse at major stations for weeks on end and it can seem intimidating at times.

I know these guys have been at every city station for the past few months almost daily so I see them at 2 stations every morning. Although not on a concession any more I still tend to bristle when I see them, not sure why, as I havent been badly treated by them, quite the opposite. Maybe being a middle aged spikey grey haired fat chick has something to do with it - I probably look like their mum.

We target concession card holders because they are normally poor, and thus ruining their lives with a fine makes our day. You lot are also guaranteed quota fillers.

When patrolling the trains we can tell by the look of you as well. So yes, we are targeting you and we are not going to stop because it's great fun.

Yeah, Karma is great, here's to it biting selfish people on the ass. I swear Melbournites are becoming meaner and less giving. Maybe it has something to do with rabid consumerism from the last few years.

If you don't want to be hassled about putting your ankle on pt seats again, carry a plastic bag around with you and stick it under your foot. When the guards hassle you about your foot on the seat, point out the bag...how can they argue that? Hope your ankle feels better soon.

When they are in authority, they don't have to argue with you, just give you a ticket. Really the ticket guys don't care about broken machines or any excuse, they just say bring it up later. You send a letter and bring up exceptional circumstance. If you write a very well worded letter, with all the supporting evidence, it might work, it might not :-/

You'll still get a fine. Plastic bag or not.. I've been asking lots of questions when i see metcops hassling people, and also doing a bit of research.

Basically, if your foot is anywhere but on the floor or in the air, they 'can' fine you. Even on the wall, or if you have your little toe on the edge of the seat. Luckily not all do this.

But they're still arseholes!

THank you! :)

I actually only had my leg resting on the seat, my actual foot wasn't touching the seat at all. I think what annoyed me was he tried to fine me for that, and then decided i'll claim she doesn't have a concession card. I actually didn't so I bought a full ticket... i guess he's the one who in the end didn't have a leg to stand on.

I had a friend who was in a similar situation. She had a broken ankle and had propped her calf on the seat with her foot in the air. She was fined, despite arguing with the inspectors that her foot wasn't on the seat at all. In the end she got out of it by complainig to the Ombudsman (or something like that).

So don't be afraid to prop your leg on the seat whilst your ankle is still sore! They're not allowed to fine you for it.

I frequently end up having to stand on trains and trams while holding my two-year-old son. It's frustrating because not only is he rather heavy these days, but it's also kinda dangerous - I've got my arms full of child and the trains and trams are rarely a smooth ride. There's been a few occasions now when we've both nearly gone flying because I've lost my balance when the train is moving and I've been unable to grab onto something. But it frustrates me more when I'm waiting for a train to pull over and the moment it does, a heap of people who had previously been standing behind me suddenly surge forward and shove past us. If it wasn't so awkward I'd be launching flying headbutts at people that do that - aside from it being rude to push-in, what's with shoving a woman holding a child?!

My sister was in Mexico City a while back and said that a lot of their trains have a whole carriage reserved for 'special needs', rather than just a sprinkling of seats. We need that.

I'd have helped you up if you had a plaster cast on, thus temporary disability. I would however think twice about helping a blind man(permanent disability) up, because it is so un-politically-correct to help a disabled person, they're independent damnit!

I was about to say "there is no winning, you help and get told they're independent, you do nothing and they rant about uncaring public" but fuck that, your post has inspired me, I'm going to help the next disabled person I see who falls over, and if they tell me "fuck off I am independent" I'll just wish them a pleasant day :)

I offer you my thanks for helping me think, sir.

idgaf but their all a bunch of shit cunts. i asked a question on my way hoem today in regards to why the epping line wasnt showing up as running from southern cross but the frankston was. i was simply told it would be there and wait, lucky i didnt wait and jumped on the eltham to flinders as the train never fucking came to spencer.

when my brother was on crutches after having surgery on his leg he would stand in front of the special needs seat and read the sign out loud. Even then people wouldn't always get up, so i can somewhat empathise with you about having to try and stand on a train on crutches, it's hard to stay standing with crutches as it's harder to hold onto things.

And with not helping you up, that's terrible. I always help people up if they've fallen over or something, unless someone else is already helping. But then i also tell people if they've dropped something too. It's just common courtesy really, it's not like it takes a huge chunk of time out of your day.

So yeah, sorry you had a crappy day and i agree and hope that karma bites those people in the arse that weren't considerate to you.

Bah, unfortunately I see that sort of stuff all the time. Stupid. The most common trick is the 'I'm wearing my ipod and looking at something very interesting on the floor - so can't see you standing there in need of a seat' move. Morons.

I once saw a group of people shove a very elderly man out of one of the old trams (with the steps). He went A over T and hurt himself quite badly.

I hope you're foot gets better, and that you have better public transport luck!

Aw that's awful, sorry to hear that happen. People are so selfish, it irks me so much when people stand in the freaking door of the train in the morning and don't move down the aisle and then when you have to squeeze in they give you this huge glare like 'OMG can't you just wait for the next train?' Um no, I need to get to work just as much as you wanker. And ticket inspectors...well anyone who wants a job like that has to love those power trips, clearly that guy was no exception or was just looking for something to argue about. Hmm makeshift bouncers.. even they are a pack of tools. I went out for my friends birthday on Friday night, constantly debating if it was actually a good idea... we went into a pub and we were sitting in the beer garden, and i was leaning up against the table, as the seats were too low... one of the said makeshift bouncers told me to "get the F*#@ off the table" what a wanker. I apologise all for my whinging and ranting, i don't usually do it! My advise... if you have to be on crutches.. don't enter the city of Melbourne.

In regards to the injured leg up on the seat... i'd be interested to see what happens if it got taken further. As in - if you fail to comply with metcops, they call the real cops.

It'd probably look better if you had a splint or a cast so you couldn't bend you leg... but I'd like to see what a cop would do about that.

MC - 'Take your foot off the seat!'

you - umm.. i can't.. its broken

MC - well i'm just going to have to give you a fine then, give me some i.d

you - no, i don't think i should have to, its not my fault i can't bend my leg, i'm in a lot of pain

MC - if you don't provide sufficient I.D we'll have to call the police

you - go for it!

I'd assume that a real cop would just consider this matter a waste of time, but might give you a lecture for not showing I.D.
Metcops are the powertrip pricks. A real cop 'you'd THINK' would be a bit more reasonable. But you never know, i could be wrong!

metcop, gestapo, gumbies, plastic pollies......all the same name for "i fucking failed at every last thing in life and Melbourne is going to pay". i agree that a real copper would think the whole thing was a waste. i believe that the metcop would be reprimanded for being a dickhead and wasting the time of a publicly funded police officer on such a trivial private matter that could have easily been solved by the removal of one metcop head from one metcop anus.

That's just so nasty, I can't imagine how people can a. shove someone (especially someone on crutches) and b. ignore a person knocked flat on their face. I guess chivalry is dead then.

I went flying down some staris at Flinders St on my knees a few years ago because my shoe broke and I had an armful of stuff. About 3 people scrambled to help me, though in my case, dying of embarassment, I kind of wished them away...

The times I've offered my seats to people they've said "NO I'm FINE THANKS I'M NOT THAT DISABLED" and glared at me like I insulted them for insinuating they needed a seat. So, ask someone specifically (if they apparently look younger and/or more able-bodied than you) or try to look more in desperate need of a seat- try stumbling and looking feeble.

Until that happens, I'm quite happy sitting in my forward-facing window seat listening to my podcasts and I don't feel like being yelled at for offering a seat to a cripple. Especially on my way home on a 2hr commute from a 8hr shift (and a 2hr commute before that), because my knees always hurt like mad.

being late for work every day while ticket prices continue to go up, arsehole metcops checking your ticket every 5 mins etc. etc.

Still no excuse to push over an injured person, and not help them up.. thats just disgusting behavior.
