Does anyone know what the turn around time is for getting new lenses into old glasses frames? I need to up my perscription, but I adore my frames, and only have one pair of glasses...Or how are those el cheapo ones from the chemist in the short term?

I once had new lenses put in with about a two hour turn around, but that was in London. Mind you, it means that it is possible.

I suspect the chemist ones are for long sightedness - but it's easy enough to find out.

I once had a random chemist in freaking Malaysia do it for me in fifteen minutes.

Then I moved to Melbourne, changed my prescription, and had to wait DAYS for OPSM to do it. I had to wear contact lenses the whole time. I'm amazed I still have eyeballs left after that.

don't get the chemist ones, they'll fuck with your eyes.
if possible, go somewhere that has a 2 for 1 deal and they'll normally let you get one set done seperately, then you're not without glasses for a week.
thats what i did when i got my new glasses.

I have the same problem - going to see if they can take the measurements, get the lenses made up - and when the lenses arrive they can switch them with the old ones so I won't be without glasses

if there's a few day turn around, how about getting them to give you a free trial of some contacts to fill in the gap?

Agreed. It takes me about a week normally at my optometrists, but I always have contacts to wear in the meantime. They can give you a free weekly trial. :)

it depends what type of lens you need basically. If it's a stock lens they can be done overnight. If it's special, for example if the lens has a prism in it, they can take longer to order in.

I would guess the el cheapo ones would screw with your eyes for sure. You're talking about those $2-$5 ones on the counter at the chemist?

Does your work insurance cover glasses?

I have to get new lenses as well, and I'm planning on getting disposable contacts for the interim. The way I see it, I can order a month's supply, wear them while my lenses are getting made up, and keep the rest for such events as masquerade balls.

Took 3 weeks because it had to be shipped from Japan or some shit like that. If it's nothing special then it'll be quick but anything with coating or special thickness (that you want trimmed down) etc etc... will take waaaay longer.
