the Rising Sun
Hi all,
Am off to the Rising Sun tonight for a friends b/day. I know it's a pub opposite Burnley station, but I was wondering if someone could give me step-by step instructions of how to get there from the actual station?
Since I am blind, I'd want to know, after I walk down the ramp of the station platform, do I turn right or left out of the station? then, where abouts exactly would the lights be to cross? do I turn left or right on the other side, and how far down is it?
Thanks so much in advance.
I could meet people at the station, but I'd rather just go myself if I can, since it is so close to the station; and i thought surely someone on here would know it well! :) Lol
thanks all,
Cheers! :)

hi! rising sun is RIGHT near burnley station. once you're out of the station and onto the street, theres traffic lights ahead, walk left across the road at the traffic lights, then right across the road, and you are there! the pub is on a corner of swan and burnley sts and is seriously a 1 minute walk from the station. i think that there might have to be street that you need to cross between the station and the traffic lights but i can't 100% remember, sorry.

ah OK, i appreciate thos directions; they help a lot.
when you say, cross left, then cross right, do you mean an intersection where I need to cross at the road on the left, then turn right and cross again?

spot on!

when you want down the ramp and out of the station, you need to get to the left side of the road and across the street

On a completely unrelated note.... can I ask out of genuine curiosity how do you read the internet/computer ?

Sorry - the question is not ment to cause offence Im just curious, Ive never met a blind person to ask such questions before!

I learnt in digital editing class that there are programs designed to read out webpages to blind people - which is why alt-text in pictures is good to include, because these programs will read out the alt-text which should describe what's IN the photo.

After that class, I ended up thinking somehow that being blind was only a small impediment to being online! I don't know how that bears out in reality though.

What I DO want to know, is if you're reading the internet via a text-speech translator, how the HELL do you cope with misspellings and 1337speak and lolcat speech? The language changes so rapidly that the translator program wouldn't be able to keep up with it all.

you can usually tell if the word is pronounced wrong. ya can then go and review the text letter by letter with the cursors, and spell the word. I use msn and all sorts of chat programs so am use to it Lol! I hate it WhEn PeOpLe TaLk LikE this though and dont use any punctuation at all so the speech just goes on and on without a break and when they use SMS speech as well like "b back l8r". .. even though I must admit, I use those abreviations myself with sms, (I have a speech program for my phone too!

Oh lord. You make me grateful for my eyesight - as weak and fuzzy as it is, at least I don't have to listen to an ongoing stream of words without the structure of punctuation and go back letter by letter reviewing misspellings!

ah mostly we don't even have to go back and review the mis-pronounciation letter by letter; we just can tell that it's spelt wrong and leave it at that. :)

Interesting stuff! Out of curiosity, what does it do with various html code? I mean, if there's links, or emphasised text like bold or italics? I'm a web author for Monash uni and we have to follow sooo many accessibility rules, mostly for screen readers and I always wonder about stuff like that! :)

yep I can well imagine. well, yes there are ways of being able to tell all that stuff if we want. I generally set it so it doesn't tell me, just because it's something I don't care about as it takes up time etc. but yep, one can go back and review the text etc.
basically anything with the text you have access to, we also. only thing we obviously will never have access to is graphics and pictures.

I go past this hotel every night.

love_in_traffic has explained it, but I thought I should point out that there is a side road you have to cross, before you reach the main intersection.

Here's the really detailed instructions:

1. Exit the train station, and go down the ramp. This leads you to an underpass.

2. Turn right. The underpass will slope up, becoming a footpath. Follow this until you reach a corner. In front of you is Swan Street. To your left is the side road, then a narrow traffic island, then Burnley Street.

3. Turn left and cross the side road. You're now on the traffic island. There are traffic lights here. Burnley Street is in front of you. Swan Street is now on your right. The Rising Sun is diagonally opposite you.

4. Go forward across Bridge Road, then right across Swan Street. You are now outside the Rising Son!

(Heh. Those sound like instructions in a computer game walk-through. Sorry.)
