Public Transport Tips
Hi guys I've been using PT all my life and people come to Melbourne all the time not knowing the "tricks of the train (and tram)" so I wanted to share a few things I've learnt over the years!

CONCESSION BLITZ [IMPORTANT]
This one's big - they usually do a HUGE inspector blitz post February in a year, From the start of March they LOVE to catch expired concession card holders so please, PLEASE be careful - they have no mercy at this time of year.

Firstly 10x2 Hourly vs 5xDaily
Both of these cost the same BUT a lot of people don't know that if you validate a 10x2 hourly TWICE in the same day it lasts until 3am the following day - effectively it BECOMES a daily. So basically these are the same card, but you tend to get more out of a 10x2 because you might only use it once a day - no wasteage!

Weekend Zones
If you have a Weekly or Monthly ticket that is _just_ zone 1 or 2, on a weekend it will be both. This is handy to know if you're living out in the burbs and need to travel into the city on a Sunday for the football or similar!

Hourly Rounding
Tickets round out an hour if they're of a specific time. If you validate a two hourly ticket at 2:30pm it will last until 5pm - 2.5hours. Always try to validate just after an hour has turned, not before!

Zone Travel - (Piasdream, Lostdj)
If you normally travel specifically to one zone but for some reason have reason to travel beyond you don't have to go buy a Zone X+Y ticket if you already have an X. An employee at the desk will sell you a zone Y ticket as long as you can show him the X ticket, just make sure you validate at the other end!

Edit: This part courtesy of Pia:
"Passengers must have a single valid ticket for their entire journey. Exceptions to this are Yearly, Date-to-Date, Monthly and Weekly ticket holders who may, for particular journeys, use that ticket beyond the zone, zones or locations for which the ticket is valid by purchasing a 2 hour, Daily or Single ticket for the additional zone, zones or locations.
The ‘extension ticket’ must be purchased before the journey. If this is not possible by taking all reasonable steps before the journey, the ticket must be purchased as soon as there is a reasonable opportunity during the journey or, if there is no reasonable opportunity during the journey, as soon as is achievable by taking all reasonable steps after the journey. If the extension ticket is a Metcard, then it must be validated as soon as there is a reasonable opportunity during the journey, or as soon as taking all reasonable steps will permit after the journey"

Validation times
After you validate a ticket it will stay valid for the barriers for 2 hours. This means that whilst your ticket may expire at 3pm if you validate it on entry to a station at 2:55pm it will still get you out of the barriers at the other end until 4:55pm (but it rounds to 5pm due to Hourly rounding anyway). Whilst this won't get you by the inspectors if they find you on a train or tram, it will get you through ticket barriers at the other end.

Validate after 6pm
If you validate a 2hour ticket (also applies to 10x2 hourlies) after 6pm it lasts until 3am! Don't buy a daily if you're going to be out all night, use a two hourly and validate post 6pm - another reason that 10x2hourly ticket is your godsend, and a 5xdaily isn't worth it!

Inspector Avoidance
Not really a tip, just a caution - those inspectors love to hunt in packs at easy times. If you feel the need to travel without a ticket, obviously there are ways to avoid the inspectors.
 - Always travel on the 2nd or 5th carriage - I've found that inspectors like to travel down a block of carriages, if you're in the middle of a set of three you tend to be able to see them coming.
 - Try to travel during peak times, they tend not to book during the times when there are a thousand customers coming through the gates - generally they will let you the gates as well through to avoid congestion.

I don't want to say too much about this, but these are the common sense things (to me) anyway.

Tram Tickets
Just something that caught me by surprise - Tram tickets come validated automatically when you buy them. This is convenient and not at the same time - try to tie this in with "Hourly Rounding" You don't want to get caught out.

Sunday Saver - (Kalixis)
As the name indicates, can only use them on Sundays. $2.90 gets you travel for the entire Sunday, zones 1 and 2. Not available from the machines.

Off-Peak Daily - (Kalixis)
If you're heading off after 9am, and you're after a zone 1 and 2 daily, buy this card instead. Slightly cheaper than a zone 1 and 2 daily (9.50 v 10.10 for a full, 4.75 v 5.30 for concession)

Post Travel Purchase - (lord_of_fools, lostdj)
It is not allowed to try to buy a ticket after you reach your destination, even if the ticket machine at your origin was broken, or if you somehow forgot, or even if you missed your stop and ended up in the wrong zone. Don't even consider trying to explain things and rectify the situation to the station staff when you arrive, because they will book you.You can however get a stamp or note from the station staff you got on the station at sometimes that will get you out the other end (if they can't give you a ticket themselves). Unfortunately this one's very true - station staff don't give much room for excuses of this nature.

10xWeekend Ticket - (vaxwell)
In April, there's a new ticket 10xweekend, which works the same as the Sunday saver, but on Saturday's as well. Each ticket works out to be $2.90ish, I think. I thought that was DAMN awesome because I'm sorta getting sick of only going into the city on Sunday's to save money. lol.

I can't think of anything else right now but if you have anything to add please go ahead - just hope this helps out!

Yeah obviously there are exceptions - nothing worse than a staff member who doesn't particularly want to help you out - but I've been given separate zone tickets alongside a daily I've had before - sometimes it comes down to getting a good staff member. Unfortunately Connex aren't really known for their superb customer service.

Just wanted to share what I've found out if you want to save a dollar this way or that - you've always gotta be careful though, especially with on train inspectors - those guys are huge!

I don't support fare evaders, but... I usually have a 10x2hr and sometimes I'm in a hurry and I forget to validate. When asked for my ticket, I've been able to get off fines by shuffling through my collection of validated tickets until I've found the 'correct' one, then looking at it and saying 'oh god! I forgot to validate. the train was right there and I just ran to get on it' or 'I slipped it into the validation machine at *such and such a station*. Honest - I don't know why it didn't print.' The station I get on at work seems to be the ticket inspectors den because I always see them coming out of their secret little office. I can even recognise the plain clothes inspectors on the alamain/lilydale/belgrave lines (that tall guy, the funky/hip looking girl, and the really buff dude who looks like a gym instructor! lol) and it's hilarious when they're on a train, and suddenly they all stand up at once and flash their cards around the carriage, like they're cops. lol

Pretending to be asleep or reading a book with your ipod on and not noticing them doesn't work, because they WILL prod and poke you until you wake up and/or notice them. lol

I'm sure most of the connex people are lovely, but seriously, I got asked for my ticket 6 times on a train trip from Hawthorn to Ringwood East one day. That's just spectaculary annoying.

I'm just about to move to Melbourne and don't have a license, let alone a car, so will definitely be dependent on public transport over there. I'd say this post came just in time! Thanks! :D I've already been asking friends in Melbourne what my best options would be for public transport, as I know I won't be travelling five days a week ... more like maybe 3 times a week. That 10x2 ticket is the one everyone has been telling me to get.

And yeah the 10x2 is the ultimate casual travel card here - especially with all the tricks you can use to get the out of most of it.

Glad to have been of service, I hope you enjoy Melbourne and have someone to show you around, it's a great town but it's the nooks and crannies that define the place!

You are supposed to have 1 ticket that is valid for the whole journey ie a zone 1 daily and a zone 2 2 hourly is not ok (even if they are both validated). However, if you have a weekly or monthly or more you can buy an additional ticket, in fact if you cant buy an additional ticket (not a manned station or some other reason) you can travel into a zone you dont have a valid ticket for and buy it once you get there. For example, if you have a zone 1 monthly and for some reason need to go into zone 2, you can buy a zone 2 ticket when you get there... (there is some potential here for fare evasion with no possiblity of getting fined)

I asked a ticket inspector about that once - you have to complete your journey within the time printed on the ticket, and they said no. They said that you just have to have got on the tram (in this case) that you're travelling on by the time the ticket expires. If the journey then takes longer it's ok. Although i've never been on the tram and had my ticket checked in that situation so i dont know... I can see how it'd be hard to enforce, as i could say i'd gotten on somewhere much earlier than i really had to get around it.

It's the barriers kind of where you can get stuck but yeah, hard to enforce for sure. A lot of it is common sense - if your eticket expired 6 hours ago they aren't dumb, but if your ticket went under as they got on the train they'd be harsh to fine you. They're not all that bad considering they deal with some of the worst people in town. I'd prefer to be a barman at a seedy tavern than them most of the time.

So... if I got on a tram at 8am and validated my 10x2hour, and then at midday validated it again, it would last me to 3am the next morning? I have been buying 10x2hr and 5xdaily and keeping both in my wallet, but its annoying sometimes when I validate the daily thinking I'm going to be catching PT later but I end up getting a lift or something.

On another note, introducing this 10xWeekend ticket is odd, as wasn't Myki meant to be introduced 12 months ago?

A friend taught me a fun new game to play when you do have a valid ticket. Wear clothes with lots of pockets and carry a bag with the same affliction. Put your ticket in the least obvious out of all those pockets and (this bit's important) remember where it is.

When the ticketos come along, very very slowly notice them, put down your book, take out your headphones, and slowly search through all your pockets. All the while saying LOUDLY AND CLEARLY over and over that you have got a validated ticket here somewhere, where did you put it, etc.

Extra points for standing up to reach awkward spots, doing a second or third round through all the pockets, pulling out assorted old validated tickets, library cards, letters from your grandma, etc etc etc. String it out for as long as you can until they're just about to book you, then pull out your perfectly valid ticket with a flourish and cries of relief and apology.

By the time you've finished this song and dance, all those without a ticket should be long gone.

On Trams:
Inspectors tend to congregate at particular areas. Notable places for them to get on are at junctions with other tram lines (or train stations, sometimes), outside tram depots, at the end of each line, and at particularly high traffic stops (the ones outside universities, for example).

Not recommending fare evasion, etc, but if someone can't afford pt, one thing that can work is keeping a 2 hour ticket slightly creased and crumpled and unvalidated (once a ticket is bent it won't validate).

If you then come across inspectors tell them that it's your spare/emergency ticket, and you've been keeping it in your pocket, and today you had to use it, and you tried to validate it but couldn't.

This only works if a person is travelling from a non-city station to another non-city station (ei one where you don't have to validate a ticket to go through the gates). Also not all inspectors will accept that reason, but it works most of the time.

The spare ticket thing can also be useful in circumstances where a person has a valid/ semi valid reason for not having a ticket, like
- they didn't have change and the ticket machine wouldn't take their bank card (some do, a lot don't)
- the people at the station were taking so long to get around to selling them a ticket that their train came in the meantime
- they only just made it with enough time to jump on a train, but not enough to buy or validate a ticket

None of which are reasons that that ticket inspectors would accept for someone not having a ticket.

Also: if trying to come up with an excuse for not having a ticket, don't tell the ticket inspectors that the ticket machine is broken at your station. They keep track of which machines are broken where.

Hourly Rounding
Tickets round out an hour if they're of a specific time. If you validate a two hourly ticket at 2:30pm it will last until 5pm - 2.5hours. Always try to validate just after an hour has turned, not before!

If you validate at 2pm it goes until 5pm - I tested it once to see. :D

They tell you to validate your ticket before you travel, so as long as you've been validated on that trip you should be fine.

Aim for a service that's got a first class carriage. You can tell which ones have a first class by the * on top of the service timetable.

Board the train and sit in first class. Note how it's pretty much empty save for the odd Connex driver snoozing in a corner? That's because people associate First Class with "expensive" well, it's not. It's only $3 for the upgrade. ($25 for a card with 10 upgrades on it)

So you've got the whole carriage to yourself, where you can sleep knowing there's no fucking crying children.

And another tip for Geelong commuters.

On a service that requires reservation? Don't want to get in the cattle car with the rest of the unwashed mob who didn't reserve a ticket?

Well, when buying your ticket, just whip out your first class upgrade card and they'll reserve a first class seat for you. So now not only do you have a seat, but it's in first class. Brilliant move!

Final tip. If you commute every day, make a point of remembering all the conductors and people at stations. Soon enough, they'll remember you too and soon they will just leave you alone, so you can sleep the entire journey unmolested! That and you get the odd free first class upgrade :D

"Firstly 10x2 Hourly vs 5xDaily" - Just a question, is this true? Or just part of the 'if you validate after 6pm it will last you all night' one? IE the second lot of 2 hourly you validate was BEFORE the 6pm rule?

It is true - if you validate once at 8am it expires at 10a but if you validate in the same day twice - ie you validate again later at 2pm it will last till 3am and become a daily
