So I managed to get tickets for BDO but I've never actually been before, I was wondering what to expect. I'm assuming food/drinks will be expensive? Is it true they only let a certain number of people in per stage? Any help is appreciated, thanks. |

| Because booze is expensive. |
[Jan. 7th, 2010|01:45 am] |
How is someone supposed to get a job in this town?
I've done resume drops all over the city, emailed dozens of employers from seek/careerone/etc., called restaurants with waiting positions posted. I've yet to get a call back from anyone besides those dodgy marketing companies that seem to hire everyone. I'm reasonably intelligent, am capable of pouring a beer and making sandwiches, graduated college, don't smell, etc. I'm getting permanent residency, so I'm not the average gap year that's looking to piss off in a month either.
Is it just the season, the job market, or do people not want to hire silly Yanks? Should I step up my game? Get an edgy haircut?
Hey, are you hiring right now? |

Can anyone who's been to the Futute Music Festival tell me a bit about the experience?
The lineup looks amazing, and it's going to be my first time going. I'm just a little concerned about regular tix vs. VIP tix. Poster included behind the cut

Here are my picks for stuff around Melbourne that I like to do/go to:
Eating and Drinking Grumpy's Green - it has Mountain Goat and lots of local beers on tap and best of all the food is vegetarian so yay I can get my eggplant parmagiana. its also really good food and they are also into trying to keep their carbon footprint as neutral as possible. Mrs Parmas - Again as a veggo I miss out gettting a parma and pot at most pubs, but here I can get an eggplant parma. Its a bit pricier that i'd like to pay for eggplant ($18 vs $22 for the meat ones) its still yum and they have awesome microbrewery beers on tap. Union Club Hotel, Collingwood - really good pub food with a seperate vegetarian menu so we don't miss out on good pub grub and have to choose from salad and salad John Curtin Hotel, Carlton - good pub food (again eggplant parma..i love my parmas) and good live music East Brunswick Club - good pub food and good live music and they have an extensive choice of vegan/veg food Mountain Goat Brewery - open nights on Wed and Friday nights, place of my fave beer Terminus Hotel (the one on Victoria St in Abbotsford) - nice good and good fun drag bingo and trivia nights. Shanghai Dumpling Village (Lt Bourke st towards exhibition) i love the dumplings there and you can buy them frozen (i think its like $12 for $5.50) New Kum Den - (chinatown towards the top end) there are lots of dedicated veggie dishes here and hell who doesn't want to eat at a place called the "kum den" Menulog - for food delivery - no more dealing with trying to talk to someone in a loud restuarant or dealing with language issues as is wont to happen with certain types of cuisine LIttle Cupcake - expensive but who can be fucked to make their own? I can't so its a nice treat Houptoun Tea Rooms in the arcade off collins st - like a trip back in time, I love having scones and cream there Boreks (Vic Market deli section where all the cheeses are sold) - $5 salads which are yummy and distinctive and $2.50 boreks YUM
Pets Ingrid's Haven
Attractions William Rickett's Sanctuary and surrounding Olinda shops to just wander around like Gepetto's and Oracle bookshop Hanging Rock (and around Woodend, Kyneton, Mt Macdeon region) Healesville and the associated wineries Dight's Falls in Abbotsford Abbotsford Convent St Andrew's Market Queen Vic Night Market - I don't really like the day one much, it has too many stalls of the $2 shop variety (eg cheap shit made in China) but i like the night market as there are way more artisan stalls where its actually made here from locally sourced stuff
What are your recommendations? |

For all you Melbourne lovers of the occasional tipple.
Just found this site and tells you what stores stock the particular booze you're hunting and who does it cheaper & who has it on special.
It searches your surrounding suburbs or can search all suburbs. Figured could be helpful!
What will the interweb think of next?

| vegan/vegetarian female housemate wanted in Hawthorn |
[Jan. 6th, 2010|02:59 pm] |
Anyone know any female vegans or vegetarians (note: not the kind who eat fish and gelatine) who might want to move into a room in a really cute house on the Richmond side of Hawthorn? Rent is cheap for the location and room size.
( Details under cut )
Basically we want someone who isn't a bogan, isn't a Young Liberal, and isn't a child who expects their housemates to provide for them.
Unicycles welcome.
Edit: lol, yes, I have specific requirements, including being vegetarian or vegan. But do you KNOW how many people are out there looking for a room at this time of year? The "market" is really busy/active, so I can afford to have specific requirements to find someone who will suit our household, and I think it's pretty reasonable. Also: Oh, you guys. |

Just wondering if anyone can recommend a decent podiatrist? I have shortened achillies and my last referral recommended 12 months of stretching despite having tried that for three years... |

| | frustrated | ] | People, when walking down the goddamn street:
WALK IN A STRAIGHT LINE KEEP LEFT (and that includes the escalators, dip shit) LOOK THE FUCK UP, stop looking to the ground - look up, turn down the music in your goddamn ipod and pay attention. STAY THE FUCK OUT OF THE BIKE LANE - its for bikes not pedestrians and i'm sick of you making me miss lights or nearly bashing into me when you jay walk off your tram stop in the CBD (and that goes for you taxi drivers on Elizabeth St).
ARGH I'm so utterly sick of walking in crowded places, especially the city. Why can't Melbourne people walk in a goddamn straight line???? (An American friend also noticed this)
and ps those of you with those travelling suitcases trailing behind you are dicks. get a backpack.

copypasta from here: http://www.theage.com.au/national/police-to-target-footscray-20100101-llus.html
Police to target Footscray
POLICE have targeted part of the Footscray central business district to test new search powers in a crackdown on drunkenness and violence.
Under new search laws enacted last month, police can declare areas designated search zones if they have a history of weapon use or if police believe an incident will happen.
On January 7, a block north of the Maribyrnong town hall will be the first area to be searched under the legislation. For three hours, police will be authorised to carry out weapons searches without warrants on members of the public, in their vehicles, and in ''anything'' under their control.
Police can seize weapons, request identification and detain people or vehicles to carry out the search.
The declaration was contained in the Victorian Government Gazette on New Year's Eve. Under the new laws, the designated areas must be advertised seven days in advance.
The Footscray search area is bounded by Hopkins Street to the north, Cowper Street to the east, Napier and Buckley streets to the south, Nicholson Street to the south-west and west, and Irving Street to the north-west.
A police spokesman said the area was not chosen at random, but had been ''red-flagged'' with others in which weapons had been found over the past year.
Opponents have described the laws as a draconian and undemocratic intrusion on civil liberties and human rights, and would enable officers to strip-search children and the disabled.
But Victoria Police Deputy Commissioner Kieran Walshe said last month that police would respect the rights of those searched.
He said they were also concerned about community members' rights to be safe.
Under the new laws, police can also move people from an area if it is feared there will be a breach of the peace.
cue spirited human rights issues/footscray is a hole discussion. |

i'm trying to find an old rotary dial telephone somewhere in melbourne over the next couple of days. i haven't had much luck in op shops so far. have you seen them in stores anywhere in or near the city? i'd love a red or a black one, but colour doesn't matter because i'll probably end up spray painting it. it doesn't have to work either... ebay isn't an option because i'm hoping to find one quickly. thanks in advance :) |
