The screen as is now is rather long even after the separation.

Let me know if there's anything else to keep adding... also, contemplating an image/thumbnail update, as well as wondering if anyone would like to write separate Aoshi/Megumi pages ?

Never mind :D Ignore panic attack!

In spite of the Japanese MegAoshi site slipping into somewhere this Japanese-illiterate fanbie can't find, I've done a few things...

I've made a slight change to the "reasons" page at ice and fire to include a link to Hitomi's essay page and the follow-up to her first posting in which we dissected the fanart and some alternative ideas why people like Meg/Aoshi.

Although I've always tried to avoid archiving fanart without permission on the site, I do want people to see some of the things that were lost. There really was something unique about that Japanese website and the art that was up there. So two of my favorite images from that site-- plus two from a wonderful doujin (Kenshin/Megumi).

These are retreads for old fans, but are really lovely. I can't deny you new fans a look at what had us so excited when we first found out about these fans a few years ago :)

Enjoy. I have debated whether anything I've sketched is on model enough to post again but I want to start again if anything just to get you drabblers drabbling. .
Also, let's do a serious attempt to catch up fanarts and fanfics that you guys want to include on the site, including yours on this community :)

Keeping the Faith...

I have a word file I throw all my random Meg/Aoshi stuff into and sometimes I visit it to see if any of it is usable or not (for fic purposes or art purposes). I still find these funny (from this past summer):

(They are sitting somewhere intimately moochy-mooching.)

She said in a soft voice that was both yearning and musical to his ears, “You don’t have to be afraid…I like it when you kiss me hard.”

Megs: Why is every man determined to think I couldn’t possibly be anything but your money-grubbing ho on account that I’m such a harlot?

Aoshi: ...I’m the sugardaddy?

Megs: They think you're too boring to attract me without money.

I tend to see Megs in my AU-verses as comically wild and aggressive, brash and spunky. On-lookers or friends of the couple never seem to make the connection on how or why the two of them work together. In general, Megs' girlfriends find Aoshi horridly boring and cannot imagine what Megs sees in him, while Aoshi's male companions (if he has them) find her a little too "much" and think she's too sexy for a boring, straight-laced guy like him. My Garter series (hopefully) will contain a string of events where both parties get hit on when out on a date with each other because the flirters think they would do a much better job keeping the other happy.

...wuh oh...I found a chapter I thought I wouldn't see for a looooooong time. Megs enters a sex shop. Oh dear. It's TERRIBLE. XD

Japanese site down?

For those of you more clued into Japanese characters (since half the time myb rowser eats them),.. . can you figure out what happened to the Japanese Meg/Aoshi site?

Main page still appears to work: http://www.horae.dti.ne.jp/~maira/
But the link I clicked generates a 403 error. The fanart link I had fixed earlier this year also yields a 403. sigh.

quickie fic post.

(OK. Sorry for the posting and reposting if anyone has been present during this fiasco. :P)

Soooo, remember that overly ambitious and loong kitsune fic in the works from a while back? It's kinda done now... (Frankly, I just got sick of working on it. Almost 10k words!!)

Title: Fox Stories
Rating: T/PG-13
Summary: One-shot. They say that my mother was kitsune. (Part pastiche of traditional Japanese folklore. Of boys and foxes, of fathers and sons, mothers and wives, and of love.)

LINK

First, a note on usage of Japanese terms/styles of address: In contrast to what I used to do *hangs head in embarrassment*, I tried to keep the fangirl-Japanese to a minimum this time. I wanted to see if I could evoke a "Japanese" characterization without resorting to "surface details". Of course, certain things could not be translated -- herb/plant names, for instance. I used italicization in those cases, as is "proper" for foreign terms (though I think this is probably the first time I've ever actually done this outside of formal essays/papers), though in some instances (samurai, kimono), the terms have already beem incorporated into English, so I didn't. (I did have trouble deciding what to italicize and what not to, as the anime fandom and the Kenshin fandom in particular is more familiar with certain terms than your regular non-Japanese-speaking person off the street, but I was probably TOTALLY OVERTHINKING THINGS. :D) I used and italicized the term kitsune only once, and used "fox" everywhere else -- the reason for this being that "kitsune" is meant in more of a mythical, supernatural sense here and "fox spirit" not only sounds dumb, but is not quite accurate.

I kept the usage of titles (-san, -chan, etc.) because those are definitely not very translatable, especially in a non-modern context. I used "Father" and "Mother" as opposed to "Otousan" and "Okaasan" partly because the terms translate directly, and partly because I was too lazy to consider the variations by which the various characters might actually address their parents. (Haha-ue, Kaasan, etc.) On the other hand, I left in "obasan" because that translates less well, imo. (Aunt/Auntie is the closest, but is not *quite* it, and sounds super weird in context.) Besides, it's used as a title in this case, soooo. Yeah, speaking of which, I didn't italicize the titles, because... damn, I have no excuse for this one. I also didn't italicize foreign terms that popped up in dialogue. I also have no excuse for this, other than maybe the fact that I use italics in dialogue for emphasis, and thought it might get confusing.

Yeah, enough of my excuses on the various inconsistencies.

And now for notes on the fic itself, in roughly chronological order --

(THE MOTHER)

"Mukashi mukashi, aru tokoro ni": Literally "Long, long ago, in a certain place". A standard opening equivalent to our "once upon a time." (Though of course, in this case, it's not so long ago, and in fact both the time and the place are made relatively explicit.)

Black ships: Commodore Perry's arrival in summer 1853, about half a year after Aoshi's birth ("January" 1853)

Unclean: women were considered unclean for a period of time immediately after childbirth, I believe in the Shinto tradition, and were supposed to go into seclusion. I don't know if this belief was still very widespread near the end of the Edo period though, or if it was ever widespread at all, and in what social classes or regions, etc.

Time of renewal/bells and gate-pine: signaling the end of the year/New Year's. I'm assuming "January" to be the first month of the Japanese calendar as opposed to the Gregorian January.

Names: "Aoshi" is composed of the characters for blue/green/paleness (ao) and purple (shi). "Shinomori" literally is "Forest of the Four", or something along those lines, though as I've often noted elsewhere, it also works somewhat as a pun for "Forest of Death". Yeah, so sue me, but I can't help but love playing with this.

Ages: Despite using the Japanese calendar for "January", I'm counting ages normally rather than Japanese style in order to avoid a whole lot of confusion on my part. (Hence later on there is a reference to Misao as being 14 when she ran off to find Aoshi. Because she was, technically. I'VE COUNTED)

Random authorial reflections: Ridiculously easy to write. This was the very first thing that was written of the entire fic and it's remained mostly unchanged since then.

. . .

Abe no Seimei, Kuzunoha, and kitsune powers: The famous onmyouji Abe no Seimei was said to have been the son of a fox and a nobleman named Abe no Yasuna. In some versions of the story, Kuzunoha is the fox herself; in other versions, the fox impersonates a woman named Kuzunoha. Abe no Yasuna saves a white fox from a hunter; in her gratefulness, she transforms into a human to help him in turn. They fall in love and get married, but ultimately, she is forced to leave when her son (who was said to have inherited some of her powers) catches sight of her tail. Or, in the version where she impersonates a woman, the real woman shows up. Either way, the fox leaves behind a farewell poem asking her husband to find her in Shinoda wood. When they find her, she explains why she left, and gifts her son with the ability to comprehend the language of beasts. In other stories, the descendants of foxes inherit or are gifted with other traits and powers, the most common ones being superpowered strength and "good luck"/the protection of the kitsune mother.

Random authorial reflections: Easiest to write of the first-person sections. And also the first of them to be written. The first line there kind of haunted me -- everything else followed.

. . .

(THE FOREST)

Oni: demon/troll creatures. There is a Japanese proverb something along the lines of, "A child who does not resemble its parents is the child of an oni." It's usually not intended to be literal though, obviously. And there are rituals for driving them out, involving the throwing of beans or something.

Rice: kitsune are traditionally associated with Inari, the Shinto rice god

Dusk: A common belief was that any lone woman met at dusk or night (especially in the middle of nowhere) was probably a fox.

Glowing light/jewel: Kitsune-bi (foxfire) is basically the Japanese equivalent of the will o' the wisp. The light comes from the magical glowing jewel kitsune are supposed to possess in some stories, that is sometimes associated with their transformative powers. An older, more experienced kitsune would definitely not part with it so easily...

Clothing: I was tempted to dress her up Heian-style (most if not all fox tales take place in earlier eras), but decided that the discongruity of the kimono/obi and loose hair worked better. (And is more "canon" anyway.)

Random authorial reflections: Man, I don't know how many times I rewrote the bullying scene. Eventually I just simplified it to the max. Similarly, I had one hell of a time trying to end this section.... and eventually just tried simplifying it.

. . .

Herbs: all blatantly stolen from http://www.planetbotanic.ca/fact_sheets/japanese_herbs

War: 1894-1895 was the first Sino-Japanese war, in which Kenshin was involved in during the events of Seisouhen. Ten years later was the Russo-Japanese War from 1904-1905, which Aoshi apparently viewed with great distaste. Not terribly surprising.

Opium: http://www.taima.org/en/opium.htm

Soft white hands: I *really* like that Longfellow poem.

Random authorial reflections: Fairly difficult section for me. I'm still not sure if I rushed the latter half; on the other hand, I'm kind of pleased with the way it turned out.

. . .

(THE PROMISE)

Rebirth: One thing to keep in mind is that kitsune, powerful as they could be, were still of a "lower" life form than humans. Thus one of their supposed primary motivations is to "become" human, or at least be reborn into the human world.

Random authorial reflections: Holy mother Jesus this was ridiculously hard to write, for no particular reason. One of the two sections I left until the very end and still took forever trying to write. Probably because it was one of the longest/most complex sections.

. . .

Bouquet: White chrysanthemums for death. Not sure how modern of a concept that is -- luckily I have the excuse that this is the end of the Meiji/beginning of the Taisho era... Likewise, bouquets are European, I think, but enough European influence leaked over during the Meiji period that I don't see why not. :P

Names, part 2: In my personal canon (the "Shirakawa Yofune" continuity, which at this rate will probably NEVER see completion), Misao calls Soujirou "Seta-kun" up until they get married, when she changes to the more affectionate "Sou-san." I'm also of the opinion that Soujirou would take on Misao's family name rather than the other way around, hence the narrator's addressing her as Makimachi-san even though she's married, and referring to the family as the Makimachis. (My belief is that Misao would not approve of taking on a name that holds such horrible associations for him. Besides, I bet she and/or Okina would insist on furthering the Makimachi name. :D) Their daughters Fuyumi and Natsumi are named after winter (fuyu) and summer (natsu) respectively. The narrator is noticeably nameless...

On an irrelevant, trivial note: Fuyumi is the spiritual heir of the original Makimachi okashira (Misao's grandfather), but with Soujirou's looks and quirky sense of humor/detached point of view. She's 23 at this point in time and newly wed (her husband, like Soujirou, was adopted into the family and took on the Makimachi name -- a fairly common practice, iirc). And Natsumi, on the other hand, obviously takes after Misao. :D

Clothing, part 2: tomosode is the formal kimono for married women. furisode is for unmarried young women, and is usually brighter and more colorful than tomosode. Natsumi's kimono in this case is in subdued colors for mourning, though I don't know how accurate that would actually be. Artistic license! And Meiji men often dressed in suits, especially if they were of the more "progressive" sort (or had regular dealings with foreigners).

Dialect/accent: Kyoto dialect is considered "softer" and more "feminine". Misao was raised by Tokyo (Edo) ninjas, so I think her accent would be less noticeable, and/or she'd be able to slip in and out of different dialects more easily. Soujirou wandered for quite a few years (almost 10 -- both the Misao/Sou and Meg/Aoshi unions occurred fairly late -- but that's another irrelevant detail), so he doesn't have much of an accent either. Their daughters are purely Kyoto-bred though, so Natsumi addresses him with "-han" as opposed to "-san". Narrator boy himself also speaks standard Japanese thanks to Aoshi and his stint at school (where everything was standardized by the Meiji government at this point), though I suspect he's picked up a bit of the Aizu drawl as well. (Yeah, he grew up in Aizu.) Mostly though? I don't know how the dialects worked back then (or even now) and am pulling this all out of my ass.

Horse-drawn carriages: http://www.mlit.go.jp/road/road_e/hist/hist2.html

Emperor: The Meiji period ended with the death of the emperor in July 1912. His son, later known as Emperor Taisho, was indeed very sickly, and from various online sources (which of course may be quite inaccurate), he was also mentally impaired (especially later on, after he suffered a few strokes -- though I must add that he was also supposed to be quite good with languages), and even more of a ineffectual figurehead than Emperor Meiji. How widely his condition was actually known, I have no idea. He did go on tour throughout Japan after his marriage though (it really did supposedly improve his health, *nudge nudge wink wink*), so I'm guessing people would have noticed, but just not said anything about it.

Seeing the world: Somebody's been listening to too many stories from Uncle Sano...

Swords: katana > kodachi >= wakizashi. And daishou = katana + wakizashi.

Letters/Telegrams: telegraphy was introduced to Japan by Perry in 1853, but there wasn't a system in place until 1868, after the Restoration, and it only started being used regularly in 1873. Post offices were at first controlled by local administrators, but in 1883 or so, the govt. started restructuring the postal system. Something like that. more detailed info in this book -- http://books.google.com/books?id=TWfI04cSh2gC

Manhood: I'm still going by 15 = manhood even though the ages did vary, especially among different social classes and in different eras.

Random authorial reflections: This section was also ridiculously difficult to write, partly due to its sheer LENGTH. Older-and-mourning Misao is a bit hard to grasp -- I'm not sure I did her justice. Soujirou's always been fairly easy for me, on the other hand, though I realize my interpretation of him is quite different from most other people's. Natsumi/narrator boy interaction was FUN. Was in danger of getting carried away there; am not sure about my timing in certain spots. And the letters were the second of the two sections that I didn't write until the very end (they were THE very last things I wrote) and it was very, very hard because I hate doing epistolary fiction and it's very difficult to capture voice and characterization in letters. Esp. brief snapshots of a one-sided exchange through the eyes of a third person. (Also, isn't it just totally cliched? For the kid who doesn't get his parents to find a stash of letters after their death and connect/understand only through those letters? Oh bah.)

. . .

(THE DREAM)

Accents, part 2: Another common belief was that kitsune couldn't pronounce things properly and/or couldn't imitate human speech very well. (frex the "moshi moshi" phrase is supposed to confirm that the person at the other end of the phone is not a fox, as foxes can't pronounce that) I figure that as children it wouldn't have been so noticeable, but now as adults....

Separation: A kitsune/human relationship cannot last. As soon as her true nature is revealed, they must inevitably part. Often she leaves behind a child -- mother/son separation is in fact a key recurring <strike>obsession</strike> theme in classic Japanese literature in general. (That said, if you really must know, in the original incarnation of this fic, the shipwreck storyline did not exist. I'm not THAT evil. Sometimes. Though in fact, the entire Meg/Aoshi's son storyline didn't exist at all, originally. But then his voice popped into my head, and after that I knew that there was this whole big chunk of story there and that was what had seemed to be missing from the piece before... The son really ties everything together.)

Random authorial reflections: Another difficult section, mostly because I wasn't quite sure what I was trying to get across, and characterization eluded me. And this was originally *the* conclusion to the fic, but as much as I tried to make it work, it just wouldn't... So glad I found the real ending -- which came hand in hand with the son's story.

. . .

Birthdays: Usually people didn't celebrate birthdays -- they just automatically added a year to their age every new year. I claim Western influence. And artistic license. :P

Dream: I like floating skulls. :D

Random authorial reflections: I take back what I said earlier, this was the easiest section to write (and the second of the first-person sections that I worked on), but that's because I love writing kooky dreams. The only thing that gave me pause was whether or not to make his decision explicit, i.e. whether or not to include that last sentence. I do so love my ambiguity, which is horrible, I know, but in this case it seemed a bit of a cop-out not to at least say something. I finally compromised by making it vague. (But it should still be fairly obvious!)

. . .

Random authorial reflections: This doesn't really count as a separate section; it just kind of broke off from the previous one since it didn't really flow. But it is, in a way, its own section, as the conclusion tying everything together. I do hope the jumping around in time was not confusing, though.

. . .

Last words: If anyone is actually interested in further reading on kitsune, I highly recommend the site http://academia.issendai.com/fox-index.shtml as a starting point.
A Dialogue with the Dead

Wrote a really retarded meme with celiloquy that involves the author having a dialogue with characters he/she has killed.

My characters were based on the fic Desire Love Desire.

LEILAWINTERS: How do you feel about the fact that you died?
AOSHI: Part of me is saddened. Very sad. That I was never given a chance to love the woman in my arms as long as she deserved. And that I was unable to save her from our shared fate.
LEILAWINTERS: (follow-up) You would have given yourself up to ensure that she survived (stupid question)?
MEGUMI: Of course he would have. He’s an idiot. He thinks he’s saving me when really he’s dooming me to a life of imprisonment and subjugation under the most disgusting man I have ever met.
AOSHI: If I could be sure that she could exist free…yes. I would have.
MEGUMI: You see what I mean? Idiot. And how would my days ever be fulfilling without you there to stick your pig-headed nose into them? (to LEILA) I am a bit angry that you killed us. We tried so hard to LIVE. To really LIVE, you know? And you took that away from us. I can’t help but wonder, “wasn’t there another way?”
AOSHI: Yet, I can see that our end was fitting.
MEGUMI: Stupid, honorable men are always quick to agree to death.
AOSHI: There was a poetic justice in our ends.
MEGUMI: We deserve more than poetic justice. We are PEOPLE. How could you just kill us like we were nothing?
LEILAWINTERS: You were inanimate objects that came to life when the sun went down. In addition to that, you were characters in my story. Any way you look at it, you aren’t people.

the rest is (obnoxiously) available here: http://leilawinters.livejournal.com/183166.html

Foxes and sex (Evil vixens)

So for one of my classes this semester I'm planning to do my final project on kitsune and other shapeshifter myths (i.e. selkies, Bai She Zhuan) -- partly because I'm very fascinated with the whole identification of Megumi = Kitsune (even if it is just as a joke) and the various connotations that implies (something that I really want to explore in fanfic), and I might as well use school as an excuse to do fun stuff.

Because kitsune is a very complex and ambivalent figure, and there are different perceptions of these fox spirits across cultures as well. At any rate, thought the comm might be interested in an article/paper I found while researching called "Foxes and Sex in Late Imperial Chinese Narrative". Granted, this is obviously about Chinese foxes, and not about kitsune (and like I said, they *are* different), and it's mostly about vampiric vixens. Be warned though, as it's a big file -- pdf and 51 pages. (download here)

The best -- read: thorough and "academic" (in its compilation of resources) -- fox spirit resource on the web, by the way, is http://academia.issendai.com/fox-index.shtml -- which has sections for each culture's fox, including some nice kitsune stuff. Though some of the links are weird, and you have to go searching for them. In particular, I want to link to this story: Come and Sleep as a nice contrast to that paper I uploaded above. It's unusual as it's the earliest known Japanese fox tale, and thus provides a prototype for the "fox wife" figure that shows up in later tales. Also it's one of the few kitsune love stories that actually has a somewhat happy ending.

Anyway, it's fun to consider Megumi & her relationships (and her bad luck with them?) in light of all this stuff.... :D

(ETA: While I'm at it, going to point out this page on Tanuki. And giant testicles. .... No wonder Kaoru gets so pissed at being called tanuki. Hehe.)

Fics

Recently uploaded a new fic.

Desire Love Desire
It's my attempt at a weird, artsy story, adapted from a French animated film, which was an adaptation of a Danish fairy tale.

FF.net summary: In a world where beauty takes precedence over human experience, fixation is a slow poison on a path to madness. Two paintings find themselves trapped in materialism's ugly gaze and struggle to break free. An AU adaptation. Alt pairing. Oneshot.

url: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/3343191/1/

Although it's about Aoshi and Megs, it almost seems like they aren't the main characters. It's actually kind of strange. >.<

***

In other news, Larissa Hyuga updated Until the Dark (lol, I am so slow), and there's some interesting mooshiness that goes on in her recent updates... :D (I'm sorry hon, I've been terrible about reviewing T___T)

url: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/1829756/1/ (already on chapter 42!)

***

I know I'm missing a lot, but heh, it's always good to see that Aoshi and Megs live on...lol.

Updates at last...

Well, I'm finally back in starting to poke about and pay attention to the website:
Updated the list of fics: http://red-bird.org/icefire/fanfics/index.htm

There are more, but haven't read them yet to verify that they are what they purport to be...

If you have other updates to add (like your shrines) ,please post here so I can put in some linkage.

I do also have one M/A picture in the works and am hoping to crank it out this weekend :). I figure I ought to post something particularly after stray comments keep coming in ;)

My thanks to Darkchild for sending me the updates. If other folks have stories to add, please let me know!
