Spring Update [13 May 2009|12:40pm]

mdrf_lumpy
It's Spring and we wanted to let you know what's going on with the MDRF Friends of Faire.

First let me apologize for Prax and I not being around much lately. Life has been keeping us away but we are working on correcting this.

Next, I want to thank everyone in the group for doing such a fantastic job keeping the group going while we have been absent. You have all proven that it is our great members that make this thing work. A big thanks to the folks who have organized and handled the dinners and social activities, you know who you are.

On to the news...

We are planning updates to the web site (MDRFFoF.org) as well as the Message Boards (mdfof.proboards.com). These updates include layout, themes and content. We want your input so we can get this right so please let us know what you want or don't want, what we've got right and what's got to go in this thread http://mdfof.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=site&thread=2032&page=1

Prax has been busy getting a new vendor for our Pewter Pins and we have some great news. Not only will have pins for the general membership but we are going to have pins for the DoRTs and OBLs. She will be handling pre-orders as soon as we get final order minimums from the company. We are also still toying around with the possibility of a Founding Members Wooden Limited Edition pin this season, we will not have Wooden Pins this year as in the past.

Let's get this years Membership Drive started early this season. Our goal is 500 members by the closing day so let your friends know where to find us. No one needs to register on the Boards but it is a great way to start meeting people before you set foot in Revel Grove. Don't forget about the dinners, parties and events that we post on the Boards as well.

So please stop on by and see what's being talked about and lend your words.

Your humble admin,
Lumpy

i wanted to let the members of this group know about a fun event coming up right in your backyard!

now in its fifth year, the Maryland Faerie Festival is a weekend-long celebration of wonder, enchantment, and getting down with our awesome (s)elves.

The Maryland Faerie Festival features a full roster of fantastic vendors including
Future Relics, Mythical Masks (former Miscellaneous Oddiments), Pandora's Locks, Patrick Ober Chainmail Armour and Jewelry, Wise Studios and many more!

We also are proud to present two chock-full days of stage and strolling entertainment, featuring some of the best and most exciting artists of the pagan, magickal and faerie community and guranteed to knock your socks off (unless you're not wearing any socks, in which case they will knock your horns, hooves, wings, tails or goggles off).

Check out just a few of our featured performers (click on the names to go to the artists' websites)

Blending ancient and modern instrumentation and spirit, Telesma bridges the gap between primal and futuristic.  Their music, described as "ethnotronic groove" or "electro-acoustic psycadelic world dance.," is driven by the primal voices of the didgeridoo, the kubing, tribal drums and the human voice.  These elements, fused with high technology and modern instruments, create a mystical atmosphere evoking a primal celebration of mind, body and spirit.

Percussive, finger-style acoustic guitar, tribal percussion and lush male-female harmonies are the signature of ilyAIMY (ill YAY'mee).  The music is a modern take on folk, roots and rock music that has been compared to Rusted Root, Ani DiFranco and The Muppets.

Putting a wide range of acrobalance, fire manipulation and juggling talents to use in a series of questionably good idea, Exentrik is a high energy, acrobatic and fire-filled duo, exactly the sort of performing mortals any Faerie Troupe would have kidnapped to while away the hours of eternity.

The Gypsy Nomads play a hybridized version of the gypsy sound laced with a cabaret, celtic and neo-medieval flavor rooted in punk, folk and the vineyards of southern France.  The Gypsy Nomads features French-born British artist/dancer Samantha Stephenson on vocals, percussion and drums and songwriter, artist and veteran of the punk scene Scott Helland on guitar, drums, and loops.  Together Samantha and Scott create a compelling onstage chemistry and their show is a lively and animated tribute to the free spirit lifestyle.

Janet Spahr

Performing original and folk tunes on flute, shruti box and the unique and otherwordly Hang Drum.

Lose yourself in the dreamy reverie of a beautiful song or groove to the propulsive beat of jigs and reels in a marriage of otherworldly Celtic beauty and foot-stomping acoustic folk.  From mystical Celtic vocals to the stirring skirl of the pipes, OCEAN is Celtic Music for Ancient Moderns!

Shauna Burns

Does music find you?  ...It crosses oceans, deserts and mountains to find you sometimes.  But it can also seep into your pores when you are not looking and then you wake you to find that it's always been there.  Part of your soul.  Shauna Burns is an inspired pianist and singer/songwriter.

The Raven

His origins are obscure and his antics strange, but The Raven is an unusual and amazing trickster and magician who will draw you into a realm of eggstraordinary feats of balance and lunacy.

And many more.  The Maryland Faerie Festival is family friendly and, in addition to two stages of all-ages entertainment, we have a seperate children's stage featuring storytellers and puppeteers, including
Beale Street Puppets presenting Fairy Caravan
and
DreamWeaver Productions presenting
The Enchanted Wagon and Dragon Scales & Faerie Tales.

Additional activities include Unicorn Rides, a treasure hunt, daily parades, lectures, a Green Man March by the brothers of the Blessed Order of the Green Man, workshops, a faerie wishing tree and two Maypole dances led by the Kings and Queens of the Seelie and Unseelie Courts.  The Royal Courts will also be entertaining mortal visitors throughout the day.

And as if this weren't enough, on the night of Saturday, May 16 we are proud to present

an evening of music, dancing under the stars and fire performances featuring The Gypsy Nomads, ilyAIMY, Dance Afire, Exentrik and Telesma.  This is a seperately ticketed event and tickets will sell out, so be sure to grab yours today!

The Maryland Faerie Festival is coming with a variety of fantastic and wonderful vendors, artists, bands and activities, and all we need to fill the grove are magical, mischevious and enchanted creatures like you!  We hope you'll join us as our Faerie Revels begin!

i wanted to let all the rennies out there know about an upcoming internet-based TV show call All's Faire.

the show is a comedy about the dedicated actors in a struggling (and somewhat dysfunctional) renaissance faire.  the show was created by Thom Woodley, a veteran of internet-TV shows whose two previous projects - The Burg (a comedy about people in Brooklyn who take themselves too seriously) and The All-For-Nots (a comedy fakeumentary about an indie-rock band that takes itself too seriously) - are really funny.

so far the initial response on All's Faire from early viewers has usually something along the lines of "hey!  i know/am that person!!!"

here's some words from the creator:

Right now we have nine shorts online, in preparation for the launch
of the full series at the end of the year. So here's what you can do
about that:

1. Watch them (in any order) at
www.youtube.com/user/allsfairetv
2. While you're at it, watch them in high quality. And full-screen mode.
3. Enjoy them. If you didn't, go ahead and watch them again - you'll
enjoy them much better a second, or even fourth, time.
4. Tell your friends, acquaintances, co-workers and enemies.
5. Blog about it. Vlog about it. Qlog about it (yeah, I made that
up... or DID I?)
6. Put links to it on your Facebook / MySpace / Dogster. Add the video
to your page too.
7. Give me your feedback. That's interactivity!
8. Yeah, you should probably watch them again, just to be safe.

Thanks, all! Enjoy!!

Thom

Mediaeval Baebes [24 Sep 2008|08:50am]

elspet
Just like last year, in addition to appearing on closing weekend, the Baebes will also perform at the Institute of Musical Traditions. Unlike last year, it will be on the following Monday, and at a larger venue.

The IMT show will be Monday, October 20 at 7:30pm at the Spanish Ballroom in Glen Echo Park. Details can be found here: http://imtfolk.org/html/imt08_medieval.html.

Unfortunately, the release date for their new CD has been pushed back, so they probably won't have it for sale this time around.

2008 MDRF FoF [06 Aug 2008|01:45am]

mdrf_lumpy
Hey folks! It's that time of year again. With only 16 days left before the 2008 MDRF season starts, we wanted to post some information for new folks and reminders for the veterans.
-MDRF FoF is the largest online community for a single Ren Faire! This wouldn't be possible without all the contributions from you, the members. These boards are home to cast members, employees, vendors, and patrons. Thank you all.
-This time of year is always so busy on the boards. You will notice the traffic pick up as we get closer to opening day and then the onslaught of posts throughout the season. You can visit the boards at mdfof.proboards55.com
-The MDRF FoF 3rd annual photo contest begins on opening weekend. This photo contest, sponsored by Renaissance magazine, is open to anyone and everyone. Please visit the Photo Contest page on our main site to read the rules mdrffof.org/photo.html
-If you want to meet some of your fellow MDRF FoF members, head on over to the Dragon Inn where we have daily meet-n-greets from 11am-12pm. This isn't any kind of official meet-up but we all tend to gather here during these hours to get our day started. You may meet one or two people, or twenty!
-Don't forget that the Friends of Faire is more than just these message boards. We also have a main site where you can get information about the group, about the faire, and local information like our Annapolis restaurants list. It's chock full of stuff to read at MDRFFoF.org .

We are all looking forward to another great season this year. Thanks everyone.

Huzzah!

Keltish at Maryland Renaissance Festival [24 Jul 2008|03:17pm]

[ mood | happy ]

It is my pride and pleasure to announce that this year, [info]selkiesyrin will once again be singing at MDRF.

Keltish will be performing at the Maryland Renaissance Festival this year. One weekend only. More specifically, and most appropriately, on Irish Celebration Weekend, Sept 6th & 7th. There are no firm details yet on the time or venue, but because of earlier gigs that weekend, the Keltish Faire performances will be later in the day, sometime after 4 o'clock.

Selkie will also be staying in Annapolis on Sunday night to have dinner with folks who might want to see her after Faire.

Spread the word.

Woot!

ever since i first saw the Trevor Nunn movie version of Shakespeare's Twelfth Night, i immediately fell in love with the extraordinary soundtrack.  unfortunately, it seems like it's been out of print for pretty much ever.  i've been looking on amazon and ebay for over a year now without luck, so i thought i'd turn to the rest of the internet for help.

if anyone out there has a copy of the Twelfth Night soundtrack and is willing to burn me a copy, i'd be more than happy to send postage to cover the shipping costs.  you can contact me here.

thanks!  keeping my fingers crossed!

Aid for [info]capi [09 Aug 2007|10:33pm]

klytus
>>Cross-posted to several Communities and LJs<<

I am assuming almost everyone in the MD Rennie community knows (or at least know of) [info]capi and/or The Singer Formerly Known as "Peg!"[info]selkiesyrin. I am also further assuming that those who know Capi know that has Chronic Fatigue.

I bring this up because Capi is also presently enduring some financial hardships, so much so that she can no longer afford something that has been of enormous benefit to help her fight Chronic Fatigue for many years: Enada (NADH). It is a highly unfortunate situation to be in - her health issues have contributed to her financial hardships, which, in turn, will only make the health issues that much worse. Selkie advises me, and I am in agreement, that Capi should not be forced to go without NADH. And since Selkie is not currently active within these communities, I am the one putting out the call to the Rennie community. This is not about me or Selkie, but Capi.

If you can contribute anything to make sure Capi has NADH, this would be a Very Good Thing™. I am not taking up a collection or anything like that. Just go to a web site like this one http://www.enadh.com/shop.html which sells NADH, order some, and have it sent directly to Capi. You don't even need to identify yourself to me, Capi or the community.

And we thank you for your support.

MDRF FoF Update [31 Jul 2007|03:19pm]

mdrf_lumpy
Here we are only a little more then three weeks away from the start of the Maryland Renaissance Festival and we at the MDRF Friends of Faire are ready.

*  We are hosting our Second Annual MDRF Photo Contest sponsored by Renaissance Magazine. You can find out all you need to know at www.MDRFFoF.com/photo.html

*  Our Pre-Faire Party is being hosted in Northern Virginia by Mum and Da, if you are attending we need you to RSVP on the Message Boards.

*  Speaking of the Message Boards we have a ton of Sneak Peeks about the 2007 season posted for all to view and a few extra tid bits still in the Charter Mebers Area. We have hit several milestones on the Boards; 375,000 hits, 7000 posts, 1000 topics and 260 members. Don't let these numbers scare you though, we are a friendly place to find out about faire and make new friends. You can find our Message Boards at mdfof.proboards55.com

*  Our Membership Drive for both the Message Boards and our group on RenSpace, which was featured last month, is going on now. Our goals are very reasonable; we want 300 members on the Boards and 100 members on RenSpace. You can find us on RenSpace at mdrffof.renspace.com

*  I am placing the order for pins that will be at MDRF on opening day now. If you want a pin you must get your order in this week to get yours opening weekend. Demand will determine when the next set of pins gets ordered but there are already over 300 of the MDRF FoF pins in circulation now. Pins can be ordered at www.MDRFFoF.com/goods.html#pins

*  Faire Window Clings have been a huge success and we are still trying to get it worked out that they are available at one of the vendors at faire. We have already sold over 500 MDRF clings and I for one can't wait to see them in the parking lot. We have plenty of different faire clings available at www.MDRFFoF.com/fwc.html

*  We are holding our weekly online chats this season just as in the past. On Wednesdays at 7PM join us in IRC or throught the website at www.MDRFFoF.com/chat.html and see what's going on. It is important to note that the chat room is always open and if nothing else the MDRFbot is there to answer your questions.

I think that is about it for this update from the MDRF Friends of Faire and we can't wait to see everyone at faire and until then visit us at mdfof.proboards55.com

Big News for 2007 Season Posted [21 Jun 2007|11:05am]

mdrf_lumpy
With the 2007 Maryland Renaissance Festival just over two months away every one involved with the faire is getting busy, that includes us. Our group snagged a co-victory in the 2006 Renaissance Festival Awards for Best Faire Web Community, something we couldn't have done without everyone who voted.

We are working on some new things for the website and as always if you have any suggestions or ideas please let us know. We did have a server crash and we lost two of our databases, one was the listing of folks who signed up for the Rennie Report Fanzine and the other was the winners details for 1st  Photo Contest. Please if you happen to be one of the contest winners, or know one of them, we need your contact info so we can get you your prizes.

The Rennie Report still hasn't seen its first issue but we have some ideas and some outside interest. We are still exploring the possibilities of what this fanzine can be.

The Drunks of the Round Table have a charter and a Lord High Drunkard to rule them. Congratulations to Rifraf on his new post, lets hope he can live up to it.

I have to mention all the incredible information that has been posted to the Charter Member's Area on the Message Boards. We really have become the first place information shows up. The big big big big big news about Pub Sing will be posted this weekend!!! If you aren't a Charter Member yet, all you have to do is donate to the site. The money all goes to keeping the site alive and gives us the ability to keep adding new features. Big things are happening and if you want the info first you need to be a Charter Member of the MDRF Friends of Faire.

This was a short update but we have much more in store for you next month, so...

Safe journies friends, until we meet in Revel Grove,
