Hello. I know these sound really dumb questions, but all this speedy and fast, what's that? I've tried checking out Big Bang but I just don't know how these things work. Take Round 4 for example, is that a challenge to write a novel in 2 months? Or Round 1 - you'd have 4 months to write a novel? Where do the prompts come from? I is so dumb.
Part of me would like to do it, but I'm not sure I'm up to it, anyway. So not sure why I'm even asking... *sigh*

Well, we're only vaguely following the bigbang format but the rounds are specific to this event to allow people to take part across the July=October range - some people wanted it in summer and others in the fall, so the rounds system is meant to help with that.

As a guide:
long haul novel = 4 months
long haul novella = 2 months
fast novel = 2 months
speedy novella = 1 month

And for the accompanying vids or artwork will have assignments given out early September for the finished fics from rounds 2-5. Same sort of deal for the second lot of accompanying vid/artwork, assignments given out in November for the rest of the (mostly) finished.

As for prompts, I figured it's up to people what they write but we could certainly offer up unused ficathon prompts since I thought that way anyone stuck for an idea could find a decent few to choose from and it'd also help possibly on motivation to be writing for someone, a purpose to provide them a fic as well as to purely finish the contest. I imagine we could also have a thread on the LJ for submitted prompts for this to help out any stuck authors, but the finding of the prompt could be done a bit after signups (planned for June time) and before the writing takes places.

I should also point out you could continue with any unpublished WIP's sitting around on your harddrive - the work does not have to be completely new, just as long as it's not been seen before. Providing motivation for writers out there to finish any lagging projects of theirs for this pairing.

Even if you're unsure if you're up for it I'd say you could always go for one of the long haul rounds - if you try for a novella in 2 months and don't finish then it can be extended for submission up to 30 days later, we're not likely to be really strict on these as long as the majority is done and overall fics are complete by the end November when all is posted up for in the masterlist and for voting for prizes.

Also, if you really don't think you could write or made any vids/artwork for this, you're always welcome to help organise. ;)

Thanks for this. It's all much clearer. I think :) Oh yes, I'll definitely help organise.

Regards to organisation, see the reply below in the other comments. Organisationwise once it's running will be regular posts to remind people of targets for rounds/word count check.

Also, at end of rounds organisers will get to (:have to) read through entries before the vid/artwork assignments are given out.

Plus there's helping out find people prompts, betareaders and cheerleaders if they want people to give encouragement.

Thanks. You know I'm a bit hopeless at graphics/layouts etc. but count me in for supervising a round, possibly, say a later one once I see how it's done, general help and also as much reading/beta as you need.

Oh and I forgot to mention but collaborative works (of no more than 4 people) can also be entered. Obviously youd have to figure out what to do re prize sharing but if a collaborative work wins anything big prize winning categories can be split into more medium or smaller prizes etc. I mention it as I figure for some it might make them more likely to enter, though making sure people work together well can be tough too.

Collaboration can be quite inspiring, I have found.

I know I've not yet POSTED a McWeir fic, so it's kind of weird for me to be offering, but I do like the 'ship and have been busy writing ficathon fics so I haven't had a chance to do a McWeir yet. In any case, if you need help organizing, I would be delighted to help.

lol, well I guess in a way that's what this event is designed to encourage. Not only to get novella and novel length M/W fic, which is rare, but to help push people toward finishing something for the pairing. The ficathons for the pairing we had always went pretty well and this is just a change from those really.

Some help would be great - any particular preference for how?

Areas I particularly need help in would be setting up the LJ for this, custom graphics and layout applied to it or just help writing the rules etc out.

I've already got a few documents trying to clarify a lot of this but if you want to help distilling that into useful chunks of information for the profile/schedule/rules/... posts I'd also be appreciative. We've got until June, when signups are planned, to sort the basics out.

Anyhow, let me know if any of that interests you and I can give you access to the document (through googledocs perhaps?) or maintainer rights or what have you for the lj.

I would be up for something in the late summer or preferably into the fall. My life is just a little too hectic right now to commit to anything. But this would be the perfect opportunity to get back into writing McWeir! And if it's in the fall that gives me awhile to think about it and outline some ideas so I'm prepared when the time comes.

And yea for more McWeir fics! :D

I voted for the vid/art stuff. I know I've got no time for the writing, but with proper motovation I can accomplish some less time consuming creativity. :)

Ok so what are the lengths of a novel or a novella?

Novel = 60,000 words and novella = 30,000. so if you do long haul rounds that's average 500 words a day.
