Two days, two stores
On Sunday we actually managed to get out early enough to get to the Tezuka exhibit at the Asian Art Museum. He really was quite amazing, and the show is very worth checking out. Because it was us, we didn't get there as early as we would have liked, so we didn't get to spend as much time there as we would have wanted, and we didn't get to see anything else in the museum, so someday we will have to go back.

The Artist-in-Residence for the day, at the museum, was Jason Shiga, so that was a pleasant surprise. And he told us how and where to get public transport to Berkeley, so that we could get to Comic Relief in time for the signing. We took the Bart over, and in the end we were just a few minutes late.

Comic Relief recently move into a new location, and WOW is it an incredible store. It used to to be one of our favorite stores, and now it is many times as large, and just beyond amazing, I would rank it rather high on our list of the Top Five stores we visited during the trip. Scott did some Q&A before the signing and then signed for a while.

I sort of ignored the Scott part, because many people that we knew showed up, so I was hanging with them. Our friend Ricky and his wife Allison came out to see us, which was very cool as we haven't seen them since their wedding. It was great seeing them, and they were even able to join us for dinner.

Also joining us for dinner was Rory our host and Eric Drooker, whom we hadn't met before, but who we are big fans of. I was at the wrong end of the table to talk to Eric, but Scott had a great time talking to him. It was a fun dinner. Sky got food from a vegan place across the street and brought it over to eat with us, so everyone was happy.

After saying goodbye to Rory and the store, we had to cab it back to San Francisco to pick up our car, and then drive to San Jose, where we needed to be for Monday morning. We got in rather late and quite exhausted.

Monday, Scott managed to get up early and get to eBay while the girls and I enjoyed not having to be him. When he got back it was only one or so in the afternoon, so we went off to feed the females (Scott had been fed at eBay). We went to Papa Johns, did you know that their crust was vegan? Sky did.

After lunch we went to the Winchester Mystery House. It was now 4pm so we didn't have as much time as we would have liked there, but we did have time to go on the regular tour. Sky and I were going to do the Backstage Tour, but there wasn't enough time. I love the place, and it was fun showing it to Scott.

We left with enough time to take Scott to a Boston Market so that he would be fed before the evening event This was a good thing, as it was the only "dinner" we had time for. The girls ate some food as well, I didn't but there was delicious cheese to be had at Hijinx Comics and that was more than good enough for me.

Hijinx Comics is a small store with a great collection and a friendly, very smart owner; Dan Shahin. He managed to draw quite a crowd and it really was a party. Lots of people that we knew and hadn't seen in forever, showed up. There were many people who I recognized, but couldn't place until they gave me their name. I was surprised that there were so many people in the area that we knew. We even got to play sort of matchmaker when people were surprised to see others that they knew there.

It was a wonderful night; now we just have to get everyone up so that we can make it to Adobe on time.

Hi,
I was at your lecture yesterday at Adobe. I'm an instructional designer and have written several books about Illustrator and Photoshop techniques. I'd like to discuss your method for creating the frames layer in Illustrator with you. I could write up the instructions if you share the file with me. Then I could put it in our tutorials set on Adobe Design Center and you could use it in your classes. Sound like a deal?

email me back if you're game.
thanks,
Luanne Seymour

Whoa... you're certainly maintaining the breathless, exhausting pace! You won't know what to do with yourselves once life on the road winds down!

Comic Relief, Berkeley, CA

HiJinx Comics, San Jose, CA

... 'cuz I know you're tired!

Geez, I promised ages ago I'd send along my crepe recommendations for when you guys were in the Bay Area. Hope you have at least one more meal there you can plan for...

The Crepevine
My all-time favorite eatery in the whole U.S., since high school. Locations in San Francisco, the East Bay, the Peninsula, and San Rafael.

Crepes on Cole
My other favorite hang-out from back in the day.

Ti Couz
Mission district. Patrick Farley took us here a couple years ago. Much more authentically French than Crepevine or C on C; very excellent.

The Crepe House
They've got several locations and they look good, though I'm not sure if I've ever been to one.
