SVA!
Tonight was our first event-thingey, an informal classroom Q & A at Manhattan's School of Visual Arts, a great school with a proud history (Spiegelman, Eisner and Kurtzman all taught there for a time among many others). I was in full-out motormouth mode, but it seemed to go well and the 2 hours flew by. Afterward, we hung out with faculty and other great alumni and artists of the scene. Special thanks to Tom Woodruff, Keith Meyerson and the others at SVA who made tonight possible.

Among the great artists and teachers present were Raina Telgemeier and Dave Roman (above, left) and Jason Little (above, center in the red shirt) plus Jessica Abel and Matt Madden, Tom Hart, Nick Bertozzi, June Kim, my old DC compadre Joey Cavalieri, Sal Amendola and Jack C. Harris. I was especially delighted to have my first real conversations with one of my favorite modern comics artists, the great David Mazzucchelli.

The room's chairs were set up in a big semi-circle around a small podium with me in it.

I felt a bit dorky up there, but it worked out okay.

Afterwards, we got Dunkin Donuts! Which is a big deal to us, cause they don't have them out West.

Oregon has at least two or three Dunkin Donuts. Google reports one in SW Portland and one in Happy Valley. Who wouldn't want any excuse to visit someplace called Happy Valley ?

If you ask me, you're better off here, though.

Snobbishly yours...

The caption for that second photo should be "Scott McCloud, holding court." :)

Thanks for coming to SVA last night. I didn't get a chance to talk to you, but I really enjoyed the discussion. While I didn't completely agree with the 'toxic theory', I think the important thing is that it got people thinking and talking about comics. Good luck on the rest of your tour!

Yes, thank you for pointing that out. I had meant to credit her, but forgot.

So, for those interested, Sky took all the pictures, I had taken a couple and showed them to Sky, she took one look at what I had taken, and stole the camera from me and proceeded to take much better ones.

I just visited New England for the first time, and was shocked (and pleased) that New Hampshire, Connecticut, and Vermont had zero Starbucks. But Dunkin Donuts was practically on every corner. So cool that your family's doing this road trip! :)

That third photo looks so much like the picture of a statue. One of those hyper-realistic painted plastic things two or three artists were famous for, some years back.

That's just what the world needs: a Scott McCloud Action Figure! Comes with black jeans and t-shirt, and easel pad! Optional extras: thermos of coffee, shelf full of books, laptop, and family members in minivan!

Actually, those hyper-realistic statues were full size. I was thinking of the fun people would have 2oo years from now of rediscovering him in the corner of a warehouse, dusting him off and making full size 3D virtual copies by the millions.
